House of Commons chaos and confusion over Gaza ceasefire vote

  • The Speaker is at the centre of a huge row in the Commons after he was accused of helping Labour "hijack" a Scottish National Party debate calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, to avoid a backbench rebellion.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
Sir Lindsay Hoyle overturned the rules to allow Labour to have a vote on their own motion. But there was chaos and fury when a last minute decision by the Government to withdraw their own amendment took away the SNP's ability to vote on their own motion at all. Our Political Editor Gary Gibbon is live at Westminster.

That's not what it was about at all, although I can see how from CH4s coverage you might have come to that conclusion. The outrage was over splitting the vote which is actually incredibly harmful to democracy.
There was originally 1 bill to be voted on. Yes or No.
Then the speaker said, well actually what we'll do is we'll change that into 2 versions of the same bill with slightly different wording in parts that impacts the material outcome.
Then the government said that isn't fair we should have our version too then and the speaker said ok we'll have 3 versions of the same bill with slightly different wording that impacts the material outcome.
So now instead of voting yes/no on a bill, they have a selection of wordings to vote for instead meaning it's less likely anything passes which is why the government and SNP withdrew.
Imagine if the budget was up for debate and instead of saying ok vote yes/no to the budget he said actually let's have 3 different versions of the budget where each party gets it to be the way they want it and we'll vote on that. That would undermine the role of government and the cornerstone principles of democracy. He's done exactly that here on this ceasefire bill and done so as a political favour to one party over all others.
That is serious corruption in the house that every Brit should be outraged about.
