- What on earth is going on in the House of Commons?
The House erupted last night after the Speaker's decision to take action completely unprecedented in recent history. In the SNP's opposition day debate calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, he granted Labour an amendment to the vote which was to be taken ahead of the SNP's motion.
Labour's amendment changed the wording of the SNP's motion to remove references to the collective punishment of Palestinians by the IDF, for a ceasefire to be contingent on the release of Israeli hostages by Hamas and for Hamas to give over power in Gaza.
Labour have 17 opposition day debates in the course of a parliamentary session, while other opposition parties have three between them. The SNP saw Labour's granting of an amendment and first vote as a hijacking of their debate.

We have bailed out banks to the sum of billions while they carry on like nothing has happed , no body takes the blame and we suffer yet again , the education system is falling apart along with our health services.
All it’s been is either Conservative or Labour who gave run this country post war and yet we are returning to the pre war days of no health services, and no pensions because both are corrupt to the core and unless we the public say enough is enough the loop will continue.
As for Israel and Palestine that conflict will go not till the end d of time because nether can see the wood before the trees and the killing will never end , the madness in the Houses of Parliament means nothing to the people suffering both at home or abroad because all of these politicians live in a fantasy world and not in the real world …….

@@mrD66Mbut that wasn’t ‘the parliament’, that was actions of an individual. I think everyone is questioning the integrity of the speaker this time and the labour opposition. Which in most estimates is way worse.
I remember a time, way back in childhood. And the innocence of youth. That I assumed that the most intelligent and efficient people only, rose up to the heights of leading a whole country. I believed that they acted within the best interests of the country and it's citizens. As an adult, I have learnt that was as much an illusion as santa Clause!
And still, we are fed lies and kept from seeing the true bigger picture, thanks to our media!
The truth is that we are in deep trouble and as this is an election year, I won't try to persuade anyone who to vote for, just ask PLEASE, take a close look at our options - none of which is to not vote, or spoil your paper, because apathy is a vote for more of the same! This is the election that our grandchildren will be asking how did we vote.

Labour was reported by very senior and credible journalist that they were lobbying the speaker before the vote in the corridors with multiple whiteness testimonies by other MPs.
Labour are the party who aren’t transparent in their view of the matter because they’re scared of more division.

Fundamentally it's down to the idea that people couldn't vote for the SNP motion or the Conservative's amendment and so they would have to abstain on a vote on the Gaza ceasefire. It's a mess but that's really it

He instead put the Labour vote 1st, when it isn't their opposition day and I'm sorry but we know why that happened. He had a chat with Starmer who was worried that half his party would side with the SNP and make his party look divided

Opposition Day doesn’t mean get what you want, it means decide the business of the house and then the house decides if it likes the business you’ve brought

They argue to vote remain as they don’t produce anything and have zero economy so wouldn’t exist on their own. Plus they are heavily subsidised by England.
The SNP walked out of the chamber, but the debate had already come to a close. They walked out during the Deputy Speakers speech outlining why their particular vote would not be heard. But according to one SNP MP they did still vote on the Labour amendment in the voting booths after walking out because they felt they had no choice. And that's exactly the point, because they weren't given a choice. Yesterday was one of 3 days out of the Parliament season where SNP get a chance to put forward their own motions for a vote, Labour get something like 18 of these days, SNP get 3. Normally other opposition parties cannot add amendments on these days, because they have their own days to put forward motions. Labour were in an uncomfortable position having ot either side with Government or support the SNP. And the speaker's decision to allow Labour motion effectively gave Labour a way out, otherwise Starmer may have faced massive rebellion because its not clear if he would have allowed his MPs to vote for SNP ceasefire and condemnation of Israel. The Speaker is normally re-elected after a General election so the theory is that Labour privately put pressure on him to allow their motion to go through on an SNP day, or he would lose his place after a massive Labour landslide election. So, yes its all very trivial and petty in the face of Gaza crisis, and it is really sad its come to this. But, it also raises questions of speaker impartiality and fair process in the House of Commons. Debate in our form doesn't work unless the speaker is neutral.
But also shouldn't they be given an option to vote on a ceasefire which doesn't use the language that the SNP's motion did and isn't the government's not ceasefire. Otherwise they would to have to abstain and that would be electorally toxic for Labour, you can see the leaflets now. It's a mess but I am with Hoyle on this one tbh.
Equally it's shouldn't have to come down to an opposition day to have this debate.
Complete agree with this and I find it mind-boggling to all those who are trivialising this, saying "it's outdated, it doesn't matter". It does matter. It's about the impartiality of the speaker and how our democracy functions
If this process was "so outdated" why not amend it earlier? Why choose the day when Labour face a full-scale rebellion to change the process which inevitably benefited Labour

I really like him tbh. He's clear, concise, driven and at least on the Israel/Gaza matter completely right. The fact that the Speaker AND Deputy Speaker have allowed Labour to insert their language into what should've been the vote on the SNP's motion, DURING SNP's OPPOSITION DAY, is absolutely DISGUSTING! The two of them have single-handedly robbed SNP of their vote, while preventing a huge row in the Labour party. That row could've cost Labour votes which would've been picked up by other parties. With the exception of Labour/Kid Starver, everybody lost yesterday.
Yeah, but it's all bluster. The intention of the SDP motion and the Tory amendment was to embarrass the Labour Party. As it turned out the Labour amendment was stronger than the SDPs and the SDP motion was lost as always when an amendment is passed. He might be seen to be making a strong point but it's not because he's outraged about the amended motion but because it failed to embarrass the Labour Party.

As a foreigner... it's not really showing me anything. I honestly don't get what exactly they're arguing over and why. I get that it's something to do with procedures, but that's about it. They're not arguing over substance, but procedure and they're all really angry and... ok... I don't see what the big deal is. This is how it comes across to me at least. I already knew the UK Parliament has a lot of angry, shouty stuff, so this just seems normal. That's how they operate. Nothing unusual.

If you want the back story:- A decision was taken to push up oil prices in 2000's, Saudi's wanted to remain the friendly effortless mobility providers and blindly retaliated immediately where they believe the threat was concept. Iran decided to shroud their motives to the unraveling saga, thus the war on 'shrouding?' in Iraq/Iran, I guess they would undercut the market and those manipulating the market would have never seen the benefit in their lifetimes. Now the wars are de-escalated these Western cartoons are looking for scapegoats and distractions.

They're arguing over the fact that the SNP has been denied the ability to propose changes to legislation. This done in a way that is basically arbitrary - the speaker's reasons aren't terribly convincing.
The SNP nominally represents the interests of Scotland. Denying the SNP their right to speak because English parties are uncomfortable with what they're saying looks very bad. We're constantly at risk of Scotland leaving the UK, and Westminster appearing to favour England is one of the big arguments for that.
This "insubstantial argument" will result in a lot of very unhappy Scottish people who feel, whether they agree with the SNP's motion or not, that they've been trampled on again in favour of English politics. The SNP - and Scottish secession - was basically dead in the water, but this may bring them back to life if they play it right.
It doesn't look like anything of substance because you don't have context of the backdrop against which this is happening. And none of this is to mention the fodder this will be for the "immigration = islamist terrorism" crowd.

First of all since 1801, Great Britain is no longer the Nation in question, we are now the United Kingdom, and, *the only country in that United Kingdom that does not have it's own parliament is England.* Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland now have devolved parliaments, both the Commons and The Lords has undergone radical changes over the last 40 years. I saw a pic of parliament during the debate about illegal immigration and it had only a handful of people present vs. a full house for a Gaza ceasefire which Israel has no duty nor inclination to observe.

The SNP had a day to present a motion, they did a motion and then Labour decide to remove it and put in their amended motion, with collusion of the Speaker. WHAT A DISGRACE.

Like the majority of the electorate, I am shattered beyond belief what has took place yesterday with the Leader of the Opposition, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House. Their behaviour has reduced me to tears. I never believed this could happen in the UK. It’s time to really fight for our country.

@@trevfindley5704 it was a day allocated to the SNP for them to put forward their bill…they are allocated three of these each year. Labour are allocated 15 per year. Labour (Keir Starmer) ambushed the Bill because the Labour backer benchers were going to divide Labour’s vote with a 50/50 vote. Starmer did not listen to the advise of his Chief Whip which was not to interfere. Starmer and the Speaker had a very loud and public argument as Starmer was trying to pervert the course of justice with the Speaker who sits with a bias towards any party. The Speaker was convinced by Starmer to accept an addition to the SNP Bill. Starmer claimed that his MPs would be in danger with their constituents if they voted against the amendment. It seems the Speaker was swayed by this argument which he should not have. When he announced it, the House went into absolute chaos, the behaviour of which has been seen very rarely. What it all boils down to is Starmer, as a maybe future PM could not be seen to have the split of his MPs at this stage so swayed the Speaker which has now taken away all authority of the Speaker. Starmer turned the SNP day into a Labour day. Starmer is showing his bias towards a minority in this country.

As a foreigner watching this... since you mention the world, It's not embarssing as much as it's confusing. I've noticed everyone being up in arms over this in the UK, but I'm not really sure what's even happening, who's right, who's wrong and why. They seem to be talking about procedural-technical stuff.

Unfortunately, Flynn is my MP, and having left the SNP myself, and having attended meetings held by Flynn, I guarantee you, this has more to do with attempting to get another independence vote, by the SNP, than anything else. I do agree, though, that once again, it is the Scots who have shown that Westminster is so corrupt, that it needs to close down, because Westminster should be moved to Jerusalem, because everyone in Westminster is WORKING FOR ISRAEL.

One massive problem that everyone seems to be overlooking in this discussion - the original SNP motion included a call for ‘an end to the collective punishment of the Palestinian people’.
Now, the problem is that ‘collective punishment’ is not just a casual descriptive - it is a specific legal term used in Article 33 of the Geneva Convention, and for the UK parliament to put forward a statement accusing Israel of collective punishment would be completely unprecedented by current UK legal opinions.
Yes, it may be obvious to all of us that what is currently happening in Gaza is a collective punishment, but that doesn’t mean that parliament can make that kind of statement without legal backing - in fact, it’s such a huge departure from the current positions of the main UK political parties on the Gaza conflict that I personally find it hard to believe that the SNP didn’t expect either Labour or the Tories to table an amendment to remove this wording!
Lastly - the wording of the Labour amendment called for everything that the SNP motion did, and also called for the immediate cessation of the annexation and settlement of Palestinian land both in Gaza and the West Bank, all without including accusations of unproven war crimes!
So, why the SNP chose to leave the chamber in protest against their bill not being voted on (which, I’ll add, would never have been voted on once a preceding amendment was approved, which as I’ve outlined above was a near certainty due to their own wording) instead of voting for an amendment that gave them everything they were asking for plus more…. I’ll leave that for you to consider.
My opinion? The SNP just did Westminster up like a kipper, and will be laughing all the way to Holyrood as their support on both the general election and any future independence referendum goes through the roof.
I do agree with your highlighting this. Decent point about the legal or political implications, but, isn't that the reason for having a vote in the first place. You want to change something, like the UK state's complicit support of collective punishment of a population.
You could anticipate those amendments being raised, but by who? People who continue to deny what the ICJ has plausible grounds to investigate or try a case for genocide.

I don't honestly think the SNP is laughing about it. Yes they may well have scored some political or public gains. But I don't think anyone wanted this mess or could even have predicted it really.
