In 2021, the Chicago Bears of the NFL shocked the world by announcing they were purchasing the Arlington Heights Race Track in the Chicago Suburbs to build a new stadium and mixed use development. However the property taxes ended up being too high than the Bears liked and they brought in new president Kevin Warren, who shifted the teams focus.

Good luck putting a new stadium on the lakefront next to the old one. As long as those conservation groups are around, they will tie it up in courts for a long time.

As an Illinois resident and taxpayer, it infuriates me that both of these franchises are coming back to the state with their hands out after getting a new stadium (White Sox) and a renovation (Bears).
All of their problems are due to poor planning and execution. New Comiskey became dated the second Camden Yards opened, and I'm not sure what the Bears were thinking with that ridiculous renovation? Now they want more money?
If the Bears can actually put together $2 billion in private money, then use that money to build a stadium on the land that they own in Arlington Heights. If not, too bad! Maybe the economic oasis that is Northwest Indiana is a better option. Or, they can leave the third biggest market in the country, which would immediately lower the value of the franchise. Either way, they deserve absolutely no public money, especially since the taxpayers are still on the hook for the Soldier Field renovation.

I generally share the same sentiment with using taxpayer money for stadium construction. Although being a SUD Grad student I'd feel more comfortable with teams using taxpayer money if the state passed a law requiring any stadiums built with public money to be Certified Carbon Zero, just like Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. Additionally I'd like any new stadiums to be covered in and powered by Solar Panels, and for any excess energy on nongame days be sent back to the grid

Yes!!! Just tear down soldier field, build a new retractable roof or domed soldier field stadium in it's place (with the newer old style soldier field roman type of columns, the older roman style colums may not be supported by a retractable roof dome very well), build public transit & parking too/around the stadium, temporarily play in the newer ryan field stadium in evanston, il & memorial stadium in champaign, il temporarily (don't laugh, they've done it before) & get the newer retractable roof stadium with the newer style romam columns built into it by the 2027-2030 seasons & let's get the city of chicago to host a super bowl!! The city of chicago can handle the crowds, has the highways, the hotel rooms & plenty of stuff to do to make a great super bowl weekend with that new stadium & the downtown skyline & lakefront views. As yes folks, the newer stadium would have to be domed or retractable roofed (i prefer retractable roofed so "da bears" & the fans could play/be in the elements & cold whenever they deem it necesssary) with the style of the old soldier field & the roman type of columns incorporated into it. If mayor brandon johnson wants to finally do something right, make the bears new downtown stadium happen. You'll be cold as heck walking in that chicago hawk/wind to the stadium, but you'll be warm & cozy inside of it under the dome of the new stadium.

Never understood why all the domes are in the south....... Where you don't really need it.

Another twist in all of this is the Chicago Fire. Currently, they're waiting to see how the Sox and Bears situations play out. Joe Mansuato who owns the Fire is a billionaire and hasn't been afraid to spend recently. I wonder if he'll step in and contribute money for an NFL stadium on the condition the Fire also moves there. Think Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta

Soldier Field is in the nation's 3rd largest city Lambo is in is the smallest city of all major sports and they make it work. But on the other hand, if anyone gets a new park it would be da Bears. The Sox played in Oid Comiskey for 80 years. Now, just over 30 years later, they want a new park. I have never heard of the Cubs wanting to replace Wrigley. That would be sacrilegious.

Unfortunately nothing was going to get done with the previous mayor. Still, Arlington Heights was a terrible idea from the beginning. Moving to the suburbs is such an 80s and 90s thing. Sports teams around North America have realized that they aren’t invincible and in many cases the reality is they need the city more than the city needs them. Governments have recognized it, started calling the bluff, and they’re getting away with it.
