The Jaws sequels hit a wall right off the bat because that first film is a singular story. Doing sequels,no matter how good, would just be silly. For me,Jaws 3 is one of those "it's so bad it's good," movies. And it's such a piece of 80's nostalgia. And I actually saw both Superman 4 and Jaws the revenge in the theater back in 87'. Well,I was young and naive. lol

No one realizes the reason the shark looks so stupid in the revenge is because it is the same shark from the back lot. They just pulled the mold out ran it put some sand in the paint so it would look like it had rough skin and made a new set of teeth. It’s a terrible sculpture. The shark looks like it has down syndrome.

Jaws 4 was actually supposed to be their back to basics movie. Hey look, we're back in Amity briefly. Oh and look. There's nearly all the Brody family. They knew they made a misstep with Jaws 3. Jaws The Revenge is supposed to be them 'righting the ship'.

If nothing else it introduced me to the super cuteness of Lea Thompson two years before Back to the Future. Also saw Jaws The Revenge in the theatre summer of '87. Well done video.I completely agree with you on 4, but I'm a fan of 3, & also a fan of 3D. Unlike you, I saw 3 in a theater. The 1st attempt, me, my mother & brother, was turned away because it was sold out. So we went to see War Games instead. WG was cool, but I still wanted to see Jaws 3. Then I finally did, & I liked it. When you don't see a 3D film in 3D, it definitely takes away from the experience. A lot of people that rank the Friday the 13th series for example, often times criticize 3, but they've never seen it in 3D. I own a 3D TV too, & can actually watch these films at home in 3D. I wouldn't say Jaws 3 is as good as the 1st 2, but I dig it nonetheless. I thought putting in Sea World was interesting & a fresh idea. & I will say, I'm actually impressed with Joe Alves, for 1, not having directed a film before, & 2, doing it in 3D. Even seasoned directors have a difficult time directing in 3D. So I find that commendable.

I think it's worth noting that Mario Van Peebles' character Jake originally died in the first edit of the film, after the shark is impaled by the front of the boat. Test audiences didn't like this ending so they reshot it. Peebles emerged unharmed and the shark's death was changed- for the better in my opinion. Instead of being impaled, roaring and bleeding from its mouth- it suddenly and inexplicably blows up. And in the most hilarious edit ever, they didn't have the full shark to film with so they had a small wooden shark in a bathtub with a firecracker on it mixed with footage of the first Jaws- and that's the ending that was actually shown in theaters. I love it, lol.

And audiences HATED it, citing it as a reason why they didn't like the movie as he was the most popular character. So, a week after the theatrical release, they reshot the ending where Peebles survives and that version was released internationally and home video in the US...

I don't hate the concept of Jaws movie incorporating Voodoo/Santeria/Black Magic. It could have been films on location in a Caribbean, South American or off the coast of Africa setting. Make the majority of the cast Black/Latino locals, maybe even the lead is a local head of a resort/safari. American/European protagonists get caught with locals (seeking natural medicine? seeking voodoo help to solve problem? Find a missing daughter caught up in a local cult) meanwhile a big shark (representing evil) can be the B Plot killing locals. Something like that could've worked, but you know Hollywood.

Speaking of Halloween, two of the more respected Halloween movies (H20 & Halloween) both ignored all Continuity after Halloween 2 and Halloween respectively... meanwhile the ones which respected the movies that came before were complete dreck.
Ignoring Jaws 3D isn't one of the many, many problems of Jaws IV. Continuity shouldn't be a suicide pact. If you screw up, better to ignore the screw up than waste a bunch of time "fixing" the screw-up.

I also went to see Supergirl at the cinema, which I also enjoyed. I also watched Jaws The Revenge at the cinema. That was piss poor. However I have watched it that many times since, I have actually developed a slight fondness for it. It is all just part of the cheesy 80's ,which you have got to love. Well at least these movies are still talked about.

"Jaws The Revenge" is especially painful because Joseph Sargent had such an impressive Emmy-winning career in television directing episodes of "The Invaders," "Man From U.N.C.L.E.," "The Fugitive," and "Star Trek." He also directed Burt Reynolds' first "good ol' boy" hit "White Lightning," and also the classics "Taking Of Pelham One Two Three" and "Colossus: The Forbin Project." Given all that quality work, it's rather amazing how bad "Jaws 4" is. However, to his credit Sargent agreed and said that being given the power to both direct and also produce the thing definitely affected his judgment. So, even great filmmakers can make a turkey. Look at Spielberg's "1941."

A really interesting and fun video too. All your inserts made it a lot of fun and really emphasised how ludicrous these movies were at conception, let alone filming. I'm going to use my favourite C-word again...the movies that were released before and after give important context to what viewers were craving and what they were moving onto.
When you break things down these movies could have been so much better with straightforward changes that mostly altered the tone of the movies.

The writers just didn't care by the third one. Jaws 2 was ALRIGHT, but clearly didn't live up to the first AS GOOD AS IT COULD HAVE even with the OG cast and characters back. Part 3 suffered not only taking us out of Amity (not a bad thing though) but recasting the returning characters and making them 10+ years older than real time asked. So now the first two happened in the 1960s? Okay...moving on. And then Part 4 was just ridiculous. You have some of the OG characters with only Lorraine Gary reprising her role and the shark having some vendetta was quite laughable. IT'S A SHARK and what exactly is it taking revenge for? Movie never explains it, nor the shark can so why bother? And why would the Brodys still be living NEAR WATER anyway? Franchise was a mess that only got worse by each installment. 4 sealed the deal so bad we only got knock-off shark movies over the next four decades, nothing associated with the franchise that not even an attempt to remake the original was made. As of 2025, it STILL remains that way. No sequel, no spinoff, no reboot, no remake, NADA. -_-
