Of the 4 obstacles I failed last weekend at my first ever Sprint race, this one was the biggest let down. I was so psyched about it but while doing one of the hurdles, I popped a rib and the pain was immense when trying to climb the rope. I tried 3 times but only made it half way up.
@@benjaminanderson1476 Maybe I just haven't experienced quite as muddy a rope as you have, but the S-hook never let me down in the mud runs of the early 2010s. I changed to the J-hook because my arms (and lats) got stronger over time, and it's so much faster than the S-hook. But if you're going to stick with the S-hook, I strongly encourage protection for your wrapping leg. I found an old wetsuit at a thrift store for $20, bought it, and cut the sleeves and legs off & trimmed them to the sizes I wanted. The neoprene is damn near indestructible and will protect you in the rope climb like nothing else, but still give you great freedom of movement, and can be easily folded down below your knee if the weather is hot. If you can't make it all the way up, the neoprene leg sleeve will let you slide down the last half of a rope climb without transmitting any warmth to your leg, much less any abrasion. (um, assuming gloves for your hands too, of course). Protects your knees in the crawls too. I use the wetsuit arm sections as elbow protection for the crawls: I'm "that old guy who scrambles so fast"under the barbed wire," but it's only because I'm not chewing up my flesh on the stones & gravel in the process!
Dude, going slow and demonstrating this movement, is Not easy, hats off to you👍🏽
This is the best video for describing the rope climb I've ever seen 👍
Indeed

“Being good at pull-ups will make this easier for you”
Me: 👀😬
I prefer using the S hook. I just feel safer and easier for beginners and those afraid of heights. Love your video.
Feels more secure but near impossible on muddy rope

I'm faster when I just use my arms
You are amazing. I feel like a T-Rex on the rope climb: I can J-hook all day but my arms, oy vey...
