Ever since I was young I was always fascinated with how things work. Wherever I am going, I constantly look at how and why something is working the way it is. With this UA-cam channel, I am able to give accurate and credible videos. Cluengineer or "Clue in engineer" is a guide to a solution. Many of my videos are how to, fix it, and explanation.
Great video, in California I followed all steps and got my 2019 Toyota Tacoma done in around 3 hours. Dealer wanted $600. Got this done for around $90 and all your suggested parts fit perfect, can’t thank you enough.
E. Anthony Valencia, glad to hear it
I got the same year can't wait to get it started
Great video, just finished installing this set up, finished installation in about 2ish hours, most time consuming step was running the power cable to battery. Super easy overall for somebody that has 0 knowledge about all this. Thank You!!! You saved me over 450$
Glad it helped
Great video! My stepson just purchased a 2018 Tacoma SR and will be adding a tow hitch including the wiring harness. Your instructions will be a tremendous help during the installation process 👍
All I can say is you are a goat. Video was amazing. Thanks for being so clear in how you explained everything.
Incredibly helpful video! Good to know about the reverse light (purple) wire as well. The only thing I did differently was instead of soldering the connections, I used heatshrink butt connectors. Either way, it works flawlessly & my Tacoma trailer connections look factory. Well done!
Thank you so much for making this video and linking the parts! I have been waiting to install a wiring harness for this exact reason! 10/10 I would eat at this restaurant again ;)
Just completed my install. Thank you again!
My 2g tacoma didn’t require power to the battery. Thanks for the video, now I have a heads up for my install tomorrow
took a little extra time with the green wire that connects to the passenger tailight. i cut the plugs so i could fish it through the existing wiring harness, loomed the exposed remaining parts of visible wire. also loomed the wire leading to the battery. cleanly tucked, took a few hours but its attention to detail
Great video, did my 2021 Tacoma wired up to my 4wheel camper. Just be sure to connect the red wire to the battery wire or your camper battery won't charge... Took several months for my battery to run out before I noticed it wasn't charging 🙄
Thank you for this very helpful video. I was very annoyed to learn that the 4 cyl. SR Tacoma did not come wired or with a hitch and the dealer would have sent it out to have it done for $500, but it would not be OEM. About $220 I got all the parts from amazon, including the hitch. A five hours later which included set up and clean up and washing the truck, I had an OEM installation and I am very happy. Both the dealer and the installer they consulted, said that they could not get OEM parts and it would not be an OEM result. Nothing is hard about this project. It took the longest, of course, to route the wires and i am very obsessive and particular. One note is that the green wire from the 4 pin wiring kit that goes to the passenger side tail light DOES NOT GIVE YOU ANY EXCESS WIRE. I had to undo my first try and go back to the drivers side light and bring along every inch of the green wire and take the very shortest path, which could not always follow existing wire that goes over to passenger tail light. At two points I took the green wire through box frame areas to make a more direct path to just get enough wire to attach to the tail light. Thanks again.
You are welcome!
Would you happen to have a part number for the kit that you used?
Nice job! Followed your instructions on my minimalist model taco and looks great! Only suggestion is to recommend throwing away the cable you cut away with flat connector that came with the controller. Reason being idiots like me get excited and solder the oem harness to it instead of to the controller. Had it soldered, shrink wrapped and didn’t realize it until I started plugging in the tail light. Doh!!!
Great suggestion! haha
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. It was very helpful.
You are welcome, I am glad I could help
Looks easy I just wanted to know which exact wire do I put the purple wire to on the reverse light?
Yes, purple wire is the reverse lights or backup lights
I did it into the red wire but now my reverse lights don’t work
Thanks for the video I was able to install mine. but now I would like to know how I can install Reese Towpower Brake Control Wiring Harness for 2019 Tacoma SR 2.7
Thank you for posting!!!
thank you for taking the time making this video, I just was wondering if I need to connect the fuse? if I do where it should goes?
You don't need to if you do not plan on towing trailers with electrical brakes but I would still do it just because it only takes an extra 20 minutes to get the whole job done right. It goes right next to the battery on your red power wire that comes with the kit.
Solid video. I’ll be in Denver in a month for a week filming some clips. And at the AF Academy hanging out.
Nice! Family in the AF?
CluEngineer yea. my sister is stationed there in the springs.
Thanks man I used your exact method and it looks great. I bought the stuff from your affiliate links too.
Thank you so much!!
I got everything from your link. Can you attach the other two wires? Do a follow up video. I want to pull my rv. Where do i attach the power and brakes? Thanks.
Will the wire connected to the battery always draw power even while the truck is off?
Very helpful! Question - where do you install the fuse holder? (My harness is missing the fuse holder - I didn’t realize until I got to that part in the video during install). I’m assuming I can pick one up at an auto parts store nearby
Good question, install it by your batter so it is easy to access
Thanks very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Can you put the ground wire (after adding longer wiring) to the battery or a fuse panel under the hood instead? Reason asking is because someone told me the body or certain parts of a truck body are not a true ground?. I have a 6 panel fuse already.
Is this the system i need..? For my 2019 tacoma ??i can get my turn signals an parking light to work together. Its either parking lights or turn signals..?? If this is all i need then thank you.thank you..i worked all day trying to get my lights to work on my trailer
I do not know what you have, but if you wire this up the same way you will have turn signals and parking lights on your trailer
So if I don’t need electronic brakes or auxiliary power (red and blue wires) do I still need to wire it up to the battery? I heard if you do that the lights will always be on. I basically only need the four flat features. Also would save a bunch of hassle running the wires.
Any feedback?
I want to do that same setup no need for breaks or aux
NICE 👍
THE ONLY THING THAT WON'T LOOK CLEAN IS THE BATTERY WITH EXTRA WIRING FROM THE POSITIVE TERMINAL... ADDING FOG LIGHTS AS WELL STARTS TO MAKE IT LOOK LIKE SPAGHETTI
...I THOUGHT ALL TACOMA'S CAME WITH 4 AND 7 PIN WIRING PLUS A TOW HITCH RECEIVER ?
Did this and added a Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty brake controller. Everything works except my brake lights and I have no idea why. Seems like if my blinkers work that the brake lights should work too since they're the same wires, but who knows. I tried unplugging the brake controllers to see if that did anything by going back to just the 4 flat connections, but no luck. Tested grounds, but still striking out.
If anyone has any ideas I'm all ears! Thanks!
Great video. Thank you.
You bet!
Did you reconnect the purple wire to the red wire that goes back into the original harness for the reverse lights? Or just connect the purple wire to the red one that goes in the bulb plug in part? I did everything like you said but my reverse lights aren’t working. It kinda hard to see in your video how you did that part
The purple wire from the connector that is coming from the bumper needs to be soldered to the reverse light bulb. The reverse light bulb has to wires, red and white. Solder the purple wire from the harness to the red wire on the reverse light bulb. Hope this helps
If I want the red wire on the 7 pin should I tap into the 12v going to the battery?
I was looking for the wiring harness that connects to the OEM plug, i ordered it and once i receive it i will be running the wiring just in time to tow my new boat. QUESTION… can’t I JUst use butt connectors to attach the wiring instead of soldering them together?
Do u have a video on how u can remove the 7 pin and 4 pin caps so u can use both at the same time....in case u were pulling a 7 pin trailer and running a 4pin tailgate brake light at the same time u cant with the caps or covers on it
No
awesome Video!!!! I got a question, My kit does not have the wire that goes to the battery.
7-pin and 4-pin connector: amzn.to/3jEH2gm
I’ve done everything that you have done besides connecting the blue, purple and red wire. My harness is working because my tail lights are working but my towing connection is not working
Great video man! Seriously very helpful!
I plan on trading this truck in within the next year, so I think I may hook up the extra wires as well for the next guy. So the purple to the reverse lights, the blue would be for the brake controller(not so much worried about that) and where would the red would connect to? is there a wire I can tap into at the tail lights?
Red goes to the battery to power all of the lights on your trailer. This is important because if your trailer has a lot of lights, the power going to your brake lights is not enough for your truck and all of your trailer lighting. I hope this helps. Thank you
I just realized, he doesn't use the red from the harness that connects to the OEM plug... he only uses the red that comes with the custom harness with the fuse box on it
Could you just wire this up into the OEM connector for "just" the 4pin?
Does anyone know if it’s possible to run the power to a controller for light bars and stuff like the SPOD. Instead of going to the battery? Thanks!
So is this the way the trucks with the OEM hitch and harness are wired?
It is very close. This process is the best way to mirror the OEM setup
Can you make a video how you connect it it to the battery 🔋 please I'm stuck their
Follow the frame all the way up to the batter and crimp and connector on there with an inline fuse. You got it!
Instead of soldering can I cut and splice them together using a crimped connector?
Yes you can. Just make it water tight
Does this work on 2023 model? It’s still 3rd gen.
Hey man if you're not going to use the 7 pin connector do you still have to run the power wire to the battery?
Great question. No you do not
@@92813justin thanks so much turned out great
hello is this a 2018 toyota tacoma ? if so whats the link for the wireing i cannot find it no where please i would appreciate it!
2020 Tacoma, But 18' is the same. Aftermarket connector (Amazon says it doesn't fit, but it does): amzn.to/30TAWjO
Exact same wiring harness: amzn.to/301PONM
7-pin and 4-pin connector: amzn.to/3jEH2gm
@@92813justin thank you so much man i been looking for this everywhere i needed it asap will order now thank man once again
Hello, could you provide the purchase link? Please
It is in the description
Have you heard of any computer fault codes occurring from a procedure like this? It seems like ANY (electronic, primarily) modifications done to late model trucks end up throwing the computer module into a tizzy-fit...
I have a 2021 Tacoma, and within minutes after installing something as simple as a locking gas cap, I started having prob's (3 different check engine fault codes were generated...I had to have the dealership hook it up and clear the computer module)...
I hope that if I do this procedure you are showing, that I won't have problems afterward... 🤔😎
Addendum : one more question...you said that the 7 & 4 - pin connector (that clips into the tailgate/bumper area) is an OEM/Toyota part, correct? Are there any 3rd-party connectors that would work with my truck, to your knowledge? And also...your video portion covering the battery connection to the back was very short/lacking detail...did you have to drill thru the fire wall to run the wire down to the wiring bundle where it is zip-tied to? 🤔🤨
I have not. I'll make a video if it happens to me.
I have a 4 cylinder but i also installed the bed liner lights. Now im confused.
Where can I get this harness ?
what are the part numbers you used. I have a 21 toyota tacoma that isn't fitted for towing lights. I already installed my hitch
See description for all of the parts details
Mine didn’t come with the red fuse adapter wire. And I only wired up a 4 flat. Trailer wires not working. Any tips?
Trailer lights** sorry
Could u please send a link that I can order all the wires ?
Question,
I bought all the same stuff. I just want to run a regular 4 pin. Do I just wire the harness to the oem adapter, the 4 wires. My utility trailer doesn't have reverse lights.
I would wire as much as you can since you are doing it. But you can wire only what you need.
@@92813justin thank you
This video helps a lot thank you! One question I have is if my trailer doesn’t have electric brakes, Do I still have to tap into the reverse light wire or can I ignore that?
I would still connect them just incase your trailer has reverse lights.
@@92813justin thank you for responding! Will do! Earned a sub from me thanks again
Still wondering if this works with 2nd gen tacoma? (2010)
I'd assume the process would be similar, there might be a few small differences though. For example, I believe the 2nd gen does not have the spot for the 7 pin and 4 pin on the rear bumper like the 3rd gen.
If you wanted to connect the power wire (that you didn't on the 7 pin harness) would you splice that into the power wire you initially ran for the 4 pin harness from the battery?
Yes, that is correct.
So I did this in my 2019 and the left light is constant 12 volts I cannot figure out why
Is that the same 7 to 4 pin connector? Amazon said it doesnt fit 2020 tacoma
It said it did not fit mine either
Finished this job today and they all fit. Purchased off amazon.
Why did you not heat shri k all the wire connection....
Sorry Where can i buy all the kit ?
See description
Appreciate the video but why would you not show the hardest part? Fishing the wires!!!
So easy, go along the frame
Where can I find or buy that kit to put to the lights
In the description
Does this work on a 2010 tacoma?
Hey where do i run the blue wire if i wanted the electronic brakes?
You will have to purchase a trailer brake module and attach that blue wire to the module
Any modules you could recommend?
I know it’s the way the kit comes but I can’t wrap my head around why the dang thing needs to connect to the battery?!?
This video is really helpful though, thanks for taking time out of your day to record this. You did a great job
That is only for the round 7 pin connector. For example, a RV trailer has electric brakes and a battery. When you connect the Rv to the truck that red wire powers the electric brakes for the trailer and charges the battery.
@@92813justin that’s awesome I didn’t know that
I’m so confused. Your boat is a 5 pin, but you’re installing a 7 and 4 flat? Soooo.... how are you pulling your boat without having the 5 flat on your truck???
To my knowledge, I have never seen a 5 pin on a vehicle from factory. The most common is a 7 and/or 5 pin connector. I purchased a 7 pin to 5 pin converter. Great question!
Any part number for this whole kit ?
See description for all of the parts
but you have no brakes
That’s not OEM wiring
