I hear ya Sir, I use to have 2 1968 matching pea green Ponatic Catlinas best running Cars I had in years. One year we tried to blow the motor up duringthe winter time. Lol !! Didn't happen, infact it ran better than before.
My first car was a 1987 Pontiac Grand Am, which I got soon after I finished college. It was a base-model four-door that did rental car duty for two years before it was passed on to the local Pontiac dealer I bought it from. It was a lot of fun to drive and handled impeccably well. I really loved it, enough to keep it until 2006, when it finally wore out its usefulness. I felt like a dog owner who had to put the animal to sleep. I'm still a Pontiac owner, though. I bought a 1967 Bonneville station wagon in 2000 and still have it to this day.
Thank you for watching and sharing what you had. That Grand Am must have been a great car because you had it awhile. My dad had an 88 but he only had it two years. He loved it but it was a company car. They rented them out for 3 years or a certain mileage and he hit the mileage. He always had the option to buy it cheap but never did that since they would just give him a new company car.
Enjoyed going down memory lane with this one . One company that was missing from the group was Hudson. They were renowned racers back in the day. They merged with Nash (another one missing ) and were not received well and were referred to as a "Hash" .
My dad was a Pontiac man. I grew up in a variety of Pontiacs. I learned how to drive in a l966 Tempest, and it's still the best car I ever drove. The black l966 GTO in the picture is made from the Tempest.
@@DTD110865 I'm aware of Oakland academically but that's like my grandfather's generation & he was as dedicated a Chevrolet man as my Daddy was a Pontiac guy. I guess they were climbing the GM price-tier generationally... I guess it was the equestrian in me but I jumped shipped. I couldn't resist all them cute little Pintos, Mavericks, Torinos, & Ponies & Mustangs over in the Ford stables (they had mad ad game in the l97os, I can still see the ad copy where they were photographed so beautifully in these grassy green rolling plains with the representative baby horses alongside the car...) I loved all my little Fords & still drive compact Fords. Only now I buy them 2nd hand from [*an online new/used car vendor* but no free ads on me 😆 ain't nobody cut me a check for that!] because the Ford dealer network has just become such a bunch of mealy mouth smart-ass lyin' con artist I don't deal with them & never take my cars to them for any service. Today you really can drive a brand of car you like & NEVER have to deal with dealership culture if you don't need to finance through them and I don't.
My father owned a 1965 Pontiac Bonneville. He loved that car. He still talks about that car to this day! I can still remember the giant steering wheel in it.
I agree on that... when they put a V8 in the grand prix as the last hurrah..master piece.....FWD was questionable but I didn't think about retooling the factories and the tech to make it RWD.....

My all-time favorite car was my very first car purchase with my own money when I turn sixteen years old. It was a 1970 Oldsmobile toronado 455 cubic-inch with four-barrel carburetor and front wheel drive. It looked like a pregnant trans am with the front being extremely sharp and pointed and their rear end was fastback with a very short trunk. It had all the amenities including a factory installed in-dash 8-track tape player in this thing flew like a rocket!!!
@Jeffery Hatch teens could only drive from 17 in UK, and anything as hot as yr. FABULOUS Toronado would have cost more than the price of the car to insure for a young driver. the premiums only climbed down in one's late thirties. I fear they may climb again for my old Maserati when I hit 80 (years, not MPH. She's good for 170+ but our max. speed limit here is 70mph and in all of London now, 20mph. it's illegal there to overtake a bicycle! ) kind regards, JXC
I miss my Saturns. I purchased my first one in 91. SC coupe. Great little car, for what it was it was fast and handled well since then my wife and I went through eight of them. I still own and drive my 2004 ION quad coupe. 140k miles, always starts and still on the original clutch.

A couple of short-lived Asian brands were Daihatsu who had two vehicles sold in the U.S., the small hatchback Charade and a small SUV the Rocky. The other was South Korean brand Daewoo who's models were morphed into Suzuki which were called the Lanos, the Nubira and the Leganza. Daewoo also produced vehicles for GM such as the late-80's Pontiac LeMans and the Chevrolet Aveo.
As someone who loves cars and history this was right up my alley! I'm sad a lot of these cars are defunct now and especially sad that they don't make beauties like they used to. I must say though, I'm surprised you didn't mention Hudson, as that was another popular (and sadly defunct) automaker most famous for the Hornet, which was often used for dirt track racing.
Checker was my favorite as boy to teens. I got my 1st driver's license driving my parents 1967 Checker wagon. What I liked was all 5 of us could fit in the back seat and noone had to fight for a door seat because of the hump in the middle. The floor was flat. Also both of my parents had a accident with it, my Dad had a head on collision and the car had $50.00 damage and the 67 Ford was totaled. My Mom had a collision and I had to pull the license plate out of the grill and the other guy had $50.00 damage.

I used to have a used Pontiac Grand Prix just like the one you showed in the video, and it was my favorite car that I ever owned. It was from the time when Grand Prix's were still those big huge boats. It just lasted me forever and it just kept going and going until finally the doors and stuff got all rusted out and then I got rid of it. I wanted to get another one but I settled for a 1980s Monte Carlo instead, which was almost as great.
I've always thought those older grand prix cars were nice looking and nice riding. I've also always been a fan of the 1980s Monte Carlo and older ones too. Thank you for watching and sharing some of what you used to have.
So sad for Pontiac being gone. I recall my moms' beige Pontiac Bonneville... fun name and the car was powerful. Could go from Miami to Orlando on ONE full tank of gas. I am a believer that the company stopped due to how reliable the car was and people didn't need to buy new one. That Pontiac lasted 10 plus years. Very reliable vehicle.
When I was a kid my parents had an AMC Rambler Marlin. Never knew anyone else who had one or seen another one in my life. My mom was known as the one who drove a "hot rod" by the other kids.

Wow, I didn't realize how many car brands that were around when I was kid are gone now. I still remember the little Mercury jingle: "Imagine yourself in a Mercury now" and how I thought how stupid Scions looked when they first came out.
At the turn of the 19th century there were lots of brands I've never heard of like Duryea and Paige. I'm browsing through some 1920s magazines I've recently acquired and it's pretty fascinating!
@@RhettyforHistory Allis Chalmers farm tractors. I know they are not passenger vehicles but they are a defunct product that used to be very popular with farmers. There are other brands that are also defunct such as Oliver, Minneapolis Moline, Cockshutt, Ford, etc.

Enjoyed the video! A couple of things to add. AMC was formed with the merger of Nash and Hudson. The history of Jeep is really complicated. Kaiser merged with Willys-Overland (one of the smokestacks from the original plant still exists emblazoned with "WIllys" on it) to become Kaiser-Jeep. It was later acquired by AMC. I believe is was briefly by itself before being taken over by Chrysler. Another badge part of Chrysler was the Imperial. It was initially (I think) a model for Chrysler before becoming its own division, only to become a model within Chrysler again. The White Motor Company build trucks and was most famous for its manufacturing of vehicles in WW 2, where it made, among other things, the famous halftracks. John DeLorean worked for Pontiac in the 60s and started the muscle car era when he and Jim Wangers (and others) made the GTO "after hours". And a fun fact - my grandfather was a pattern maker and made the pattern for the famous (or infamous) grill for the first Edsel! It wasn't his design; he only made the pattern. I can't verify it with 100% certainty, but both my dad and uncle tell me this.

John DeLorean was responsible for the 1964 Mustang as well as the 1967 Pontiac GTO. He was also the same person who saved Chrysler in the '80s with the K car and the minivan.

I miss Mercury because both a neighbor across the street had one and my parents had one when I was growing up . Plus , Jack Lord drove Mercurys on the old Hawaii Five - 0 .I also miss Oldsmobile and Plymouth because I owned one of each brand , and growing up , people in my family had Oldsmobiles and Plymouths . My brother misses Pontiac because he owned one , and he was a Knight Rider fan when he was a kid , and he loves that era of Trans Ams .
Mercury wasn’t entry level. They competed with Oldsmobile and Chrysler right in the middle of the lineup. Ford was entry level. Lincoln was top dog, competing with Imperial and Caddy.
I remember September of every year, my Dad would take us to all the different car dealerships to see the new cars---when a 1957 Chevy didn't look like a 1956 Chevy. And no one could confuse a Pontiac with a Plymouth. Cars came in a variety of colors. Sweet memories
Oldsmobile and Packard, I have a 1948 Packard and a 1964 Oldsmobile, We had quite a few Oldsmobiles when I was a kid my dad was an Oldsmobile guy but he liked most cars, I kept the best 2 and I am restoring them, Even do some of the work on them myself.
Wow, that '48 Packard is a ringer. I'm 70 and I've never even seen a late 40's Packard. You should post a pix of that rare bird! What a great resto project car, good luck with it. :))
I still remember my 1st car, a 1974 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. I miss that 327 engine humming. A shout out to my sisters 1981 Chevette and 1977 Olds 98. I learned to drive in those cars(with the help of drivers Ed).
I remember not liking the Nissan name when they dropped Datsun. To me the 280 that they had belonged together. Those Fieros were all over the place at one time. I think they rode fine but I know they had some issues. They had no problem selling them though. Thank you for watching David!
The one car that I really miss is Oldsmobile. There was even a song written about it, something about Lucille riding in my merry Oldsmobile. Another one missed was the Chrysler Imperial with its weird tail lights. Very entertaining video. Wished it was longer.
I own a 1993 GEO STORM, bought right off the showroom floor with 13 miles on it. At last check, it had 226,416 miles. I have only had two break-downs in that time. The first was the "Timing Belt" and the second was the "Thermostat". Other than that, she still runs just fine.
Very nice video Rhetty. Cars from the very beginning to the mid to late 80's all had personality all of their own, once the 90's appeared all of that beauty was tossed out the window by automobile companies, and adopted the one design to fit all. Now every automobile looks the same, all of what made one car different from another is gone, and I really miss those days. One of my fondest memories was that on every Saturday where I lived throughout the 60's, 70's the neighborhood would begin to wake up with the sight of fathers washing their cars in their driveways while we munched on our Captain Crunch as we watched cartoons on our black, and white T.V's, and we couldn't wait to get outside to ride our bikes (haaa, we use to drive everyone crazy with the clacking of the hockey cards in our spokes), play street hockey or just see what we could get ourselves into. To this day even now when I'm in my 60's I can still remember a time without worry or fear of anything. It's amazing how I can remember the smells of early morning in the summer. Even the the air smelled different, and things tasted better. I feel so sad for the young people today. EDIT: I just remembered something I did about two years ago which was hunt down all of the Sears catalogue's from the those early days I use to browse through (my personal favorite was of course the Christmas catalogue's), and came across a site which has them all. I literally spent weeks browsing the old catalogue's, and I tell ya it brought back some incredible memories. The only reason why I think I posted about the Sears catalogue's is because I remember playing with things which are looked upon todays as hazards, and in truth it makes me wonder how in the name more young children didn't pass away from exploding clackers, or using chemicals no child should be mixing. Any way, excellent channel Rhetty.

I would really wear the pages out dreaming of things that I wanted. With the internet you really have to know what to search for but with a catalog you could see things you wouldn't have thought about until you saw them flipping the pages.

I loved my red '91 Cougar but longed for a '69 Cougar. My favorite car was what my mom's boyfriend had in 1969. A white Jaguar X-KE convertible Roadster. Great content as always!!

Cars were a lot more interesting back in the day. There are some cool cars today, but they are usually the very high priced models. Most of the affordable cars today are kind of boring and one brand pretty much looks like any one of the others.. Though of all the ones you mentioned, the only brand I really miss is Pontiac. I was a huge fan of the GTO's and Trans Ams and I remember back in maybe 1968 or 69 as a kid and seeing a red Pontiac Bonneville convertible with a white interior and saying to my 6 or 7 year old self "Self, that's the car I want when I grow up!" LOL
As a car company, Suzuki no longer is in the North America. But as a make of motorcycles, ATVs, & boat, they're still around. (An absolute icon in motorcycle racing in NA, by the way.)
This was very informative, a few of these brands I had never even heard of. One brand that is forgotten is Geo, they had the car I wanted when I was 16 which was the Tracker😔
I had a Geo Metro and hated it. The 3 cyl 1000 cc engine was terribly underpowered even with a 4 speed manual, seats were uncomfortable nd everything in the car screamed CHEAP! I now have a Chevy Sonic that is amazingly nimble and fun to drive, well appointed, comfortable and easy on the gas pump.
My very first car was a light blue 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, bought in 1990. It lasted about 5 1/2 years more. The engine was still working by the time I got rid of it, but the body was so badly rusted. Also, it broke down constantly, the inside roof lining had to be stapled in place, and the seats and trunk got soaked whenever it rained! I don't miss it one bit! 🤣
I had a 1976 Plymouth Arrow back in 1990..the engine was in pieces boxed up in the rear hatch area..I gave the lady $100.00 for it & had my mechanic put it back together for $500.00 ..I drove it around for 8 years until 1998..I gave it to my young cousin to use for school commute & transportation..he drove it until it died in 2005..
I really enjoyed the presentation and the memories. I was remembering a couple other brands such as the Hudson and the Nash (which merge with Rambler).Nash was famous for it's car heater.
They were very aerodynamically advanced cars for their day and had some land speed records set at Bonneville. My grandfather drove Studebakers until the 60's, and one of the first vehicles I drove was the Studebaker pickup we had for the farm. We also had a grain truck with 12 foot dump bed that was the "big truck" for the farm until the 60's. It had a V-8 of about 290 c.i. displacement and a 4 speed tranny without 2 speed axle. If you tried to run it with a load over 50 mph it would overheat. Wish we still had it, it would be a classic now-very few of those made.
Our family had a Plymouth station wagon in the 70's and an Oldsmobile Delta 88 and Mercury Cougar for most of the 80's. That Delta 88 ran like a well-oiled machine! It was bought new in 1983, had a seafoam green exterior, and it had plenty of get up and go! I miss the heck out of that car!

Really enjoyed this trip down car memory lane. I fondly remember Ramblers, and esp miss Pontiacs & Oldsmobiles. Historical note: Packard Auto Co in Detroit produced over 50,000 Rolls- Royce Merlin V-12 aircraft engines during WW2. The Packard building, ( if it is still standing) is one of the landmark ruins of Old Detroit.
When I was a young child in the early 50's my family had a Nash Rambler. It was a good little car and we had it until we outgrew it in the early 60's. My brothers had a Gremlin. I thought it was an ugly car. It was cheap and lasted for a while. I remember a lot of these brands but there were some I never heard of. Thanks Rhett, really enjoyed this video.
The Nash Rambler also had a song about it. It was a group called "the Playmates", if memory serves. According to the song, it blew off a Cadillac whilst stuck in second gear!
My dad’s first car in the late 40s was built by Nash, another defunct company. He doesn’t remember the model. He’s 90 and has gone through lots of cars. His favorite was the Dodge 8 cylinder station wagon that was our family car back in the early 70s. He always enjoyed telling us about driving it cross country going 100+ in open areas before the years of 55mph.
@@RhettyforHistory I once had a 1976 Oldsmobile Delta 88. It was a used car and it was long gone now. I had to get rid of it because the gas tank began leaking. And the floors were rusted out so you could see the road going by through the holes in the floor. I covered them with plywood for a while but I finally had to get rid of it.

Imperial is a brand you didn't mention. For a good number of years, the Chrysler Corporation brands were Imperial, Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge and Desoto. During some years, Imperial was a model of Chrysler, the brand, while in other years it was its own brand. But it was always an expensive car, in competition with Cadillac and Lincoln. My parents' first three cars were two Studebakers and an Imperial.
My grandpa drove nothing but Ramblers, and when he bought a new one my dad would buy his old one. I grew up with Ramblers. I remember as a kid going to a drive-in movie (Doctor Zhivago) in our green Rambler station wagon. lol
Dad had the only 1964 Pontiac Laurentian in Otago. [Maybe the South Island]. A two tone green, it drew attention everywhere we went! I had it up to 115 mph on the speedo; it was great to drive. Sadly his business took a hit and we had to move on - I now only have pictures and memories of this great car. My children and grandchildren have no idea what they missed.
They should have discontinued the GMC or Chevy trucks. In my opinion. As for Pontiac I still see lots of people driving them. Most of them are beaten up.
My first car was a used 1966 pontiac tempest convertible I bought for $200 bucks in 1977. It wasn't a great car, but it was serviceable. Got me all the way from nirwalk, ct to lake George new york and return with NO problems. I miss that car
A friend in high school’s first car was an older model Oldsmobile. He called it a “Grandma Car”, but I loved riding in it! He maintained it well and he had it for three years until a reckless driver crashed into it while it was parked out on the street one night.
“Ah, a bear in his natural habitat-A Studebaker.” AMC had some unique looking cars. My brother’s first car was a used Pacer. My mom called it The Bubble. He had a girlfriend with a Gremlin. Cars used to have personality with the way they looked. Now they pretty much all look the same.
When I lived in Toledo Ohio, it was an easy drive to Detroit for the annual Detroit Auto Show. I recall that the AMC cars were often relegated to some odd corner of Cobo Arena. When I had worked my way past the flashier, more popular displays, I was always struck by the way that the AMC area smelled of cigar smoke. Cheap cigars.
Then there was the infamous Yugo, the Yugoslavian car that was as cheaply made as it was cheap in price. It was so bad, people (myself included) were saying, "Yugo --- Yugo, it stays!"
That car had lots of fun jokes! Yugo when you push. It even came standard with a rear window defroster to keep your hands warm while you were pushing it. Thank you for watching Raymond!
The only brands that came to mind immediately were Datsun & Renault. Maybe I missed something in the video b/c I admit that I was doing some things while it was playing. But, I remember Datsun from my WAAAAAY back childhood in the late 70s - early 80s. Not sure when they went defunct. I believe they got swallowed up by Nissan or Toyota, or some other company. My first car was a used Renault Encore. Nice vid.
Datsun was a Nissan. Only in America were they called Datsuns. About 1984 they were branded Datsun/Nissan and then just Nissan. I have a car magazine from 1984, on the front cover it says "Goodby Datsun Hello Nissan

I think there were a few models of Nissans that had both names listed on the vehicles as they tried to get people used to the name. What comes to mind is the 280z and the little pickups but I'm sure there were more. Thank you for watching!
So many brands went the way of the Dodo. Like Nash and their cute little Metropolitan. There was also Manic Motors in Canada, maker of the Manic GT, that produced only 160 cars in two years before going bankrupt. There was also the futuristic Bricklin SV1 that had a similar fate, though they managed to produce 2 854 cars in the short time period in which they were open.

At 9:03- The family of one of my grade school buddies bought a new Avanti (I wanna say 1965?). I thought it was pretty cool, very DEFINITELY different. Fun fact- the body styling was the work of Buckminster Fuller, of "geodesic dome" fame.
We had many of these cars at some point. My father was one of the people who invented the turbo charger. My favorite car was the DeLorean. Back in the 80's everyone wanted one. They were impressive but really were pretty crappy engine wise. Thank you for this ❣️ Before I had to give up driving because of being disabled, I ALWAYS owned a Mustang Convertible. Thank you ❣️😊

My first car was a DeSoto. My best car was a Mercury Park Lane convertible. I had an Isuzu truck made into a lowrider. Mom drove a 1966 Land Rover 109" wheelbase wagon.
Dad had a DeSoto when I was a wee kid, my uncle came up to Washington, where we lived, from Portland, it was hot, and he bellyached about it, our area was drier than his. Dad hit the a/c, and a couple of minutes later, my uncle was accusing him of trying to freeze him to death. Kept blowing reverse.. wish I’d been able to buy one before dad passed…
A really cool one was the Pierce-Arrow. I think they went out of business in the 40s, but I used to work in a big old building that used to be the Pierce Arrow factory in Buffalo New York. Pierce Arrow i think was the only American car company that wasn't based in Detroit. I've seen some at antique car shows and they were really nice.
@@RhettyforHistory yeah, they were in business from 1901 to 1938. They made expensive high-end luxury cars which were owned by a lot of stars and a lot of royalty around the world. No wonder they were so nice!! And the Pierce Arrow building I used to work in was designed by some famous architect and it's on the National Register of Historic Places. So it's no wonder I was so impressed with it. It was absolutely humongous and it was kind of in an Art Deco type style. Their only factory was in Buffalo, the only American car company that wasn't in Detroit.

The Bricklin SV-1 was a sports car company in New Brunswick Canada produced in 1974 and 1975. These were very cool cars with a gull wing design for the doors similar to Delorean. We still see them in car shows from time to time. They wers impressive
My mom had an AMC Pacer it was such a cute little car I loved it, it was like a mini station wagon, I told her I wanted that car when she was tired of it...of course I was only 13 so I would have to wait a lot, needless to say, she sold it (sigh) still kinda want it though 😁

I had a 2001 Pontiac Trans Am and would like to have another one day, bought it used around '06 and it was the first car that I owned the title to. My Mercury Cougar just turned 30 this year.. Still runs and looks like it just came off the showroom floor. Hands down the most reliable car I've ever owned. Also missing: LaSalle (designed by Harley Earl..gorgeous cars). Bricklin.
I’m a fortunate fella, I picked up a 2009 Pontiac G6 GT, 4 years ago,with only 65,000 miles on the clock. It’s fully optioned, leather interior, sun roof, gauge package. The only option I don’t have is the adjustable pedal system, but that’s nothing. It now has 110,000 miles and runs like a champ, I did change the radiator, got rid of the resonator and added a performance chip and cold air induction. Stock that 3.5 liter V-6 had 220 hp, now it’s closer to 250-260 and runs like stink. 4 speed automatic with the option to shift semiautomatic if I want, and I use that a lot. I love this car and will keep it as long as possible, with regular maintenance and 3,000 mile oil changes. I’ll never understand why GM shut down Pontiac and kept Buick going, a real shame. 👍🇨🇦
Thank you for watching and sharing what you have. I've always scratched my head on the Pontiac thing as well. It always seemed like I saw more Pontiacs than I saw Buicks. But I think it was all tied into the Bailout. I'm not sure if they were told what they had to close or they picked. If they chose then it makes sense for Saturn. They made something too good there. But with sales it doesn't make sense with Pontiac.
The AMC was sold in 1987 to Chrysler. It was purchased for the Jeep line up of SUV's. Also, International Harvester made a SUV in the 70's into the early eighties that was quite popular with outdoor sportsmen.
Some others not mentioned are Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg, Geo, Nash, Hudson, Pierce-Arrow, and the more recent Fisker electric. But there are many many even lesser known and short-lived brands too if you really dig deep. Some whose names dot the landscape or pop culture like the Dort highway in Flint, Michigan, or the band REO Speedwagon. Michigan in particular and appropriately, is riddled with the remnants of past brands. Former repurposed or abandoned buildings, road and city names, etc. There is also a great museum in Auburn, Indiana that houses Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg vehicles. Some of the cars from those three brands alone were absolutely beautiful pieces of engineering and art. In some ways even by today’s standards. It’s definitely worth a stop in you are a car enthusiast. The much larger Petersen museum in Los Angeles is also great.

🛑🛑 You forgot a few… Although International Harvester is known for Tractors, they also manufactured SUV’s from 1961 to 1980. Some say, the Scout paved the way to the modern SUV; and my first car was a 1972 Scout II that could go anywhere. 😂👍💯 The Bricklin Company manufactured cars back in 1974 and 1975. They were a composite bodied car with Gull Wing Doors, and some say they were the template for the DeLorean DMC. I miss the days when cars and manufacturers did not produce cars that looked alike. Now a days, model to model, year to year; manufacturer to manufacturer, brands can’t be distinguished apart. 💯
I do think those old Internationals paved the way for a lot of the old Broncos and Blazers which later on gave way to the SUV's. You're right about cars now days looking all alike. Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories!
Hi Rhetty I forgot about all the car brands that disappeared especially during the recession. I was and I still am in love with the 70 era old 442. I almost bought a DeLorean in the mid 80’s when the dealers in New Jersey were trying to get rid of their stock at half price. Ha!!

I heard that one squadron plane was going to go to Australia first for a few days. I put my name on the list to go on that flight and it was approved. I was so excited I wanted to go to Australia so bad. A day before we were scheduled to leave they canceled the flight I was so disappointed. Australia always struck me as such an amazing place. The first car I owned was a 1968 burgundy Pontiac LeMans. I loved that Pontiac wide track ride. The best looking car I owned was a white 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra. I can’t believe so many car brands not being made anymore.🚘🚘
I'm still driving my 2007 Saturn Ion. Aside from some pretty standard maintenance, it's going strong. I know other people who were driving them and only gave them up because they were totalled in accidents.
I posted later but my wife still drives her 2005 Vue. Over 200,000 on it. It was her family’s first new car any of them ever bought. She was raised somewhat poor as a Pastors kid and always bought used vehicles. I convinced her to buy new just before we married and she was in love. Still would rather drive her Vue than another new car. It has been a real trooper of a car.
They really were and still are still great cars! I know some of them are needing parts that they are pulling from ones that are in junkyards simply because they have been wrecked. Eventually parts will become an issue because GM isn't supporting that. It's a shame that brand isn't around anymore but I guess they made something too good. I'm still driving my 07 Vue. It's still going strong. It looks great considering its age. I've had it since 2009 and have had exactly zero issues with it. I've only had to replace the usual things that need replacement (tires, brakes, etc). It has never needed any major repairs.
My Brother & I shared a 1972 Olds Toronado.. that baby could MOVE! I also had a 1968 AMC Javelin. Loved that car, a 1973 Dodge Dart Swinger slang 6- banger ! Love the old Mopar
Suzuki is one of the best motorcycle brands. Not too many car enthusiasts care about their economy cars, still it could be nice to have these cars in US considering how high the gas prices are lately.
For some reason people weren't choosing Suzuki and I didn't really see a lot of them like you do in the bike world. There are a lot of options in the economy car market now. Thank you for watching!
@@RhettyforHistory Suzuki cars in mid 2000s were much smaller and cost about the same as bigger Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and other brands. In US/Canada most people want cars as big as they can get for the price.
Speaking of Suzuki motocycles, my husband had a very well kept Volusia. He sold it to a guy who had lost his in a divorce, the guy kept walking around my husband's bike saying "I have looked at a lot of bikes. People advertise that their bike is clean... THIS bike is clean." 😉
If they were the same price as Toyota and Honda then that was a mistake on their part. The other issue is the reliability as they never had the longevity that those other two have had.

Edsel and DeLorean were very short lived. Ford's Edsel was a no-go back in '59 and the DeLorean was gone in '83 and by '85, it was popularized in the movie Back To The Future.
One company that was left out was GEO, which was affiliated with General Motors Corporation and Toyota. They made the Geo Prizim, which actually was a redressed Toyota Corolla model. They also made an SUV version, and the company lasted only 5 years or so. The Prizim was well made, had great gas mileage.
Good one! My College GF drove a Geo Metro. By the way, is Suzuki still a thing? I remember in the "jeep" phase of the 90's, there was the Suzuki Sidekick.
Geo was a pretty good car and especially when that Prism came in. My mom had one of those and she drove it until she got t-boned and she was really upset about that. It was a 96 and the only parts I ever replaced on it were the ones that said general motors on it. So for the alternator as an example, it went out in 99 just after the warranty expired. I replaced it with a Toyota one after that and it was good until she got in the wreck which was about 6 years later. Thank you for watching!
Camren, Suzuki is still around and making cars in Japan but not in America. I had it as one of the brands in the video. The motorcycles are still made and sold in America though.
Oh I remember many, if not most, of the cars ❤ When I was a kid, me and my friends imagined how life would be in the year 2000: flying cars, choice to live on the moon, robots to make and serve our meals and we would have contact with life from outer space 👽 Now it's 2023, and well, you know how it went.... and still no flying cars 😕
But, but we have something better? Social media! Yeah back in the 50's my grandfather used to tell me I'd never drive a car because by the time I would be old enough to drive, they'd all be flying cars. Wow.
My grandfather had an Edsel. It sat in the parking at his house for 25 years. He mostly walked everywhere. They would only take the car to go to the beach on Sunday after church. One day when my dad was in his 20's, they were all sitting on the porch and the shock tables rusted out. The body went right through the shocks, all four at the same time. My grandfather looked at the car and sighed "Well, I guess it's time to get rid of it". Everyone laughed. 😂
I know that GM used the same tooling across it's brands, but nothing beat the Pontiac Trans Am as a fun, almost Corvette kind of ride. Even the "Knight Rider" models were just a touch better than the Camaro of the same years, until the IROC Camaro came out. Loved my T/A, glad it didn't kill me!😂
The Jeep was actually developed by the American Bantam Corporation out of Butler, PA. The government was concerned about the small company's ability to mass produce the Jeep. Ford and Willys-Overland were allowed to build it under license ( and Ford actually made alot more during WWII than Willys ). After the war, American Bantam had went out of business & Willys-Overland proceeded to build Jeeps for both military & civilian use.

I hear ya Sir, I use to have 2 1968 matching pea green Ponatic Catlinas best running Cars I had in years. One year we tried to blow the motor up duringthe winter time. Lol !! Didn't happen, infact it ran better than before.
My first car was a 1987 Pontiac Grand Am, which I got soon after I finished college. It was a base-model four-door that did rental car duty for two years before it was passed on to the local Pontiac dealer I bought it from. It was a lot of fun to drive and handled impeccably well. I really loved it, enough to keep it until 2006, when it finally wore out its usefulness. I felt like a dog owner who had to put the animal to sleep. I'm still a Pontiac owner, though. I bought a 1967 Bonneville station wagon in 2000 and still have it to this day.

He loved it but it was a company car. They rented them out for 3 years or a certain mileage and he hit the mileage. He always had the option to buy it cheap but never did that since they would just give him a new company car.

Enjoyed going down memory lane with this one . One company that was missing from the group was Hudson. They were renowned racers back in the day. They merged with Nash (another one missing ) and were not received well and were referred to as a "Hash" .

My dad was a Pontiac man. I grew up in a variety of Pontiacs. I learned how to drive in a l966 Tempest, and it's still the best car I ever drove. The black l966 GTO in the picture is made from the Tempest.

Pontiac was originally part of the Oakland Motors Division of GM. I just thought I'd throw that fact in there.
In my younger days I had a 66 Tempest Custom with the Sprint engine. Heaviest clutch I ever pushed and crazy top end. LOVED that car.

I guess it was the equestrian in me but I jumped shipped. I couldn't resist all them cute little Pintos, Mavericks, Torinos, & Ponies & Mustangs over in the Ford stables (they had mad ad game in the l97os, I can still see the ad copy where they were photographed so beautifully in these grassy green rolling plains with the representative baby horses alongside the car...) I loved all my little Fords & still drive compact Fords.
Only now I buy them 2nd hand from [*an online new/used car vendor* but no free ads on me 😆 ain't nobody cut me a check for that!] because the Ford dealer network has just become such a bunch of mealy mouth smart-ass lyin' con artist I don't deal with them & never take my cars to them for any service. Today you really can drive a brand of car you like & NEVER have to deal with dealership culture if you don't need to finance through them and I don't.
My father owned a 1965 Pontiac Bonneville. He loved that car. He still talks about that car to this day! I can still remember the giant steering wheel in it.

My all-time favorite car was my very first car purchase with my own money when I turn sixteen years old. It was a 1970 Oldsmobile toronado 455 cubic-inch with four-barrel carburetor and front wheel drive. It looked like a pregnant trans am with the front being extremely sharp and pointed and their rear end was fastback with a very short trunk. It had all the amenities including a factory installed in-dash 8-track tape player in this thing flew like a rocket!!!
Awesome! Kids today will never understand. The beauty the sound a motor like that makes!

@Jeffery Hatch teens could only drive from 17 in UK, and anything as hot as yr. FABULOUS Toronado would have cost more than the price of the car to insure for a young driver. the premiums only climbed down in one's late thirties. I fear they may climb again for my old Maserati when I hit 80 (years, not MPH. She's good for 170+ but our max. speed limit here is 70mph and in all of London now, 20mph. it's illegal there to overtake a bicycle! ) kind regards, JXC

I miss my Saturns. I purchased my first one in 91. SC coupe. Great little car, for what it was it was fast and handled well since then my wife and I went through eight of them. I still own and drive my 2004 ION quad coupe. 140k miles, always starts and still on the original clutch.

A couple of short-lived Asian brands were Daihatsu who had two vehicles sold in the U.S., the small hatchback Charade and a small SUV the Rocky. The other was South Korean brand Daewoo who's models were morphed into Suzuki which were called the Lanos, the Nubira and the Leganza. Daewoo also produced vehicles for GM such as the late-80's Pontiac LeMans and the Chevrolet Aveo.

As someone who loves cars and history this was right up my alley! I'm sad a lot of these cars are defunct now and especially sad that they don't make beauties like they used to. I must say though, I'm surprised you didn't mention Hudson, as that was another popular (and sadly defunct) automaker most famous for the Hornet, which was often used for dirt track racing.

Checker was my favorite as boy to teens. I got my 1st driver's license driving my parents 1967 Checker wagon. What I liked was all 5 of us could fit in the back seat and noone had to fight for a door seat because of the hump in the middle. The floor was flat. Also both of my parents had a accident with it, my Dad had a head on collision and the car had $50.00 damage and the 67 Ford was totaled. My Mom had a collision and I had to pull the license plate out of the grill and the other guy had $50.00 damage.
The very first car I remember my dad having was an Opel. Great small car, very easy to maintain.

I used to have a used Pontiac Grand Prix just like the one you showed in the video, and it was my favorite car that I ever owned. It was from the time when Grand Prix's were still those big huge boats. It just lasted me forever and it just kept going and going until finally the doors and stuff got all rusted out and then I got rid of it. I wanted to get another one but I settled for a 1980s Monte Carlo instead, which was almost as great.
I've always thought those older grand prix cars were nice looking and nice riding. I've also always been a fan of the 1980s Monte Carlo and older ones too. Thank you for watching and sharing some of what you used to have.
So sad for Pontiac being gone. I recall my moms' beige Pontiac Bonneville... fun name and the car was powerful. Could go from Miami to Orlando on ONE full tank of gas. I am a believer that the company stopped due to how reliable the car was and people didn't need to buy new one. That Pontiac lasted 10 plus years. Very reliable vehicle.

When I was a kid my parents had an AMC Rambler Marlin. Never knew anyone else who had one or seen another one in my life. My mom was known as the one who drove a "hot rod" by the other kids.

Wow, I didn't realize how many car brands that were around when I was kid are gone now. I still remember the little Mercury jingle: "Imagine yourself in a Mercury now" and how I thought how stupid Scions looked when they first came out.

Maxwell and Stanley Steamer are a couple of brands that were around in the early 20 century.

Enjoyed the video! A couple of things to add. AMC was formed with the merger of Nash and Hudson. The history of Jeep is really complicated. Kaiser merged with Willys-Overland (one of the smokestacks from the original plant still exists emblazoned with "WIllys" on it) to become Kaiser-Jeep. It was later acquired by AMC. I believe is was briefly by itself before being taken over by Chrysler. Another badge part of Chrysler was the Imperial. It was initially (I think) a model for Chrysler before becoming its own division, only to become a model within Chrysler again. The White Motor Company build trucks and was most famous for its manufacturing of vehicles in WW 2, where it made, among other things, the famous halftracks. John DeLorean worked for Pontiac in the 60s and started the muscle car era when he and Jim Wangers (and others) made the GTO "after hours". And a fun fact - my grandfather was a pattern maker and made the pattern for the famous (or infamous) grill for the first Edsel! It wasn't his design; he only made the pattern. I can't verify it with 100% certainty, but both my dad and uncle tell me this.

John DeLorean was responsible for the 1964 Mustang as well as the 1967 Pontiac GTO. He was also the same person who saved Chrysler in the '80s with the K car and the minivan.

I miss Mercury because both a neighbor across the street had one and my parents had one when I was growing up . Plus , Jack Lord drove Mercurys on the old Hawaii Five - 0 .I also miss Oldsmobile and Plymouth because I owned one of each brand , and growing up , people in my family had Oldsmobiles and Plymouths . My brother misses Pontiac because he owned one , and he was a Knight Rider fan when he was a kid , and he loves that era of Trans Ams .

One infamies model of Mercury was the Turnpike Cruiser, built in 1957 and 1958.
Mercury wasn’t entry level. They competed with Oldsmobile and Chrysler right in the middle of the lineup. Ford was entry level. Lincoln was top dog, competing with Imperial and Caddy.

I remember September of every year, my Dad would take us to all the different car dealerships to see the new cars---when a 1957 Chevy didn't look like a 1956 Chevy. And no one could confuse a Pontiac with a Plymouth. Cars came in a variety of colors. Sweet memories
Oldsmobile and Packard, I have a 1948 Packard and a 1964 Oldsmobile, We had quite a few Oldsmobiles when I was a kid my dad was an Oldsmobile guy but he liked most cars, I kept the best 2 and I am restoring them, Even do some of the work on them myself.

I still remember my 1st car, a 1974 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. I miss that 327 engine humming. A shout out to my sisters 1981 Chevette and 1977 Olds 98. I learned to drive in those cars(with the help of drivers Ed).

I remember not liking the Nissan name when they dropped Datsun. To me the 280 that they had belonged together. Those Fieros were all over the place at one time. I think they rode fine but I know they had some issues. They had no problem selling them though. Thank you for watching David!
The one car that I really miss is Oldsmobile. There was even a song written about it, something about Lucille riding in my merry Oldsmobile. Another one missed was the Chrysler Imperial with its weird tail lights. Very entertaining video. Wished it was longer.

I own a 1993 GEO STORM, bought right off the showroom floor with 13 miles on it. At last check, it had 226,416 miles. I have only had two break-downs in that time. The first was the "Timing Belt" and the second was the "Thermostat". Other than that, she still runs just fine.
I hear those are selling for more than they were new now. In good condition, of course...

Cars from the very beginning to the mid to late 80's all had personality all of their own, once the 90's appeared all of that beauty was tossed out the window by automobile companies, and adopted the one design to fit all. Now every automobile looks the same, all of what made one car different from another is gone, and I really miss those days.
One of my fondest memories was that on every Saturday where I lived throughout the 60's, 70's the neighborhood would begin to wake up with the sight of fathers washing their cars in their driveways while we munched on our Captain Crunch as we watched cartoons on our black, and white T.V's, and we couldn't wait to get outside to ride our bikes (haaa, we use to drive everyone crazy with the clacking of the hockey cards in our spokes), play street hockey or just see what we could get ourselves into.
To this day even now when I'm in my 60's I can still remember a time without worry or fear of anything. It's amazing how I can remember the smells of early morning in the summer. Even the the air smelled different, and things tasted better.
I feel so sad for the young people today.
EDIT: I just remembered something I did about two years ago which was hunt down all of the Sears catalogue's from the those early days I use to browse through (my personal favorite was of course the Christmas catalogue's), and came across a site which has them all. I literally spent weeks browsing the old catalogue's, and I tell ya it brought back some incredible memories.
The only reason why I think I posted about the Sears catalogue's is because I remember playing with things which are looked upon todays as hazards, and in truth it makes me wonder how in the name more young children didn't pass away from exploding clackers, or using chemicals no child should be mixing.

Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories. I agree with you on the cars. I used to love browsing through the Sears, Montgomery Wards and JC Pennys catalogs. I would really wear the pages out dreaming of things that I wanted. With the internet you really have to know what to search for but with a catalog you could see things you wouldn't have thought about until you saw them flipping the pages.

Thank you, Rhett!! I love & miss old cars. I found out a few years back that "Jeep" came from the military "GP", (General Purpose Vehicle), which is now pronounced as "Jeep" (GP). I loved my red '91 Cougar but longed for a '69 Cougar. My favorite car was what my mom's boyfriend had in 1969. A white Jaguar X-KE convertible Roadster. Great content as always!!

Cars were a lot more interesting back in the day. There are some cool cars today, but they are usually the very high priced models. Most of the affordable cars today are kind of boring and one brand pretty much looks like any one of the others.. Though of all the ones you mentioned, the only brand I really miss is Pontiac. I was a huge fan of the GTO's and Trans Ams and I remember back in maybe 1968 or 69 as a kid and seeing a red Pontiac Bonneville convertible with a white interior and saying to my 6 or 7 year old self "Self, that's the car I want when I grow up!" LOL
They really did have some great cars over the years. Grand Prix is another I liked. Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories with us.
As a car company, Suzuki no longer is in the North America.
But as a make of motorcycles, ATVs, & boat, they're still around. (An absolute icon in motorcycle racing in NA, by the way.)
This was very informative, a few of these brands I had never even heard of. One brand that is forgotten is Geo, they had the car I wanted when I was 16 which was the Tracker😔

@Chris Pappas Yeah the Geo does really get lost in the shuffle, Sorta like the Eagle from 1988to 1998!.
I had a Geo Metro and hated it. The 3 cyl 1000 cc engine was terribly underpowered even with a 4 speed manual, seats were uncomfortable nd everything in the car screamed CHEAP! I now have a Chevy Sonic that is amazingly nimble and fun to drive, well appointed, comfortable and easy on the gas pump.

I was born in 1975 and had (and loved) half of these! Brings back such great memories, especially the Fisher Price Little People castle.
My very first car was a light blue 1977 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, bought in 1990. It lasted about 5 1/2 years more. The engine was still working by the time I got rid of it, but the body was so badly rusted. Also, it broke down constantly, the inside roof lining had to be stapled in place, and the seats and trunk got soaked whenever it rained! I don't miss it one bit! 🤣

I had a 1976 Plymouth Arrow back in 1990..the engine was in pieces boxed up in the rear hatch area..I gave the lady $100.00 for it & had my mechanic put it back together for $500.00 ..I drove it around for 8 years until 1998..I gave it to my young cousin to use for school commute & transportation..he drove it until it died in 2005..

I really enjoyed the presentation and the memories. I was remembering a couple other brands such as the Hudson and the Nash (which merge with Rambler).Nash was famous for it's car heater.
My favorite was the Studebaker Silver/Golden Hawk series circa 1957-58.

They were very aerodynamically advanced cars for their day and had some land speed records set at Bonneville. My grandfather drove Studebakers until the 60's, and one of the first vehicles I drove was the Studebaker pickup we had for the farm. We also had a grain truck with 12 foot dump bed that was the "big truck" for the farm until the 60's. It had a V-8 of about 290 c.i. displacement and a 4 speed tranny without 2 speed axle. If you tried to run it with a load over 50 mph it would overheat. Wish we still had it, it would be a classic now-very few of those made.
I think about the Pierce Arrow and one car that didn't get mentioned was the Duesenberg I would like to see a video on these types of cars

Our family had a Plymouth station wagon in the 70's and an Oldsmobile Delta 88 and Mercury Cougar for most of the 80's. That Delta 88 ran like a well-oiled machine! It was bought new in 1983, had a seafoam green exterior, and it had plenty of get up and go! I miss the heck out of that car!

Really enjoyed this trip down car memory lane. I fondly remember Ramblers, and esp miss Pontiacs & Oldsmobiles. Historical note: Packard Auto Co in Detroit produced over 50,000 Rolls- Royce Merlin V-12 aircraft engines during WW2. The Packard building, ( if it is still standing) is one of the landmark ruins of Old Detroit.
When I was a young child in the early 50's my family had a Nash Rambler. It was a good little car and we had it until we outgrew it in the early 60's. My brothers had a Gremlin. I thought it was an ugly car. It was cheap and lasted for a while. I remember a lot of these brands but there were some I never heard of. Thanks Rhett, really enjoyed this video.

My dad’s first car in the late 40s was built by Nash, another defunct company. He doesn’t remember the model. He’s 90 and has gone through lots of cars. His favorite was the Dodge 8 cylinder station wagon that was our family car back in the early 70s. He always enjoyed telling us about driving it cross country going 100+ in open areas before the years of 55mph.
Yes. The Oldsmobile. My parents owned an Oldsmobile. I remember my dad working on it a lot when I was much younger.

@@RhettyforHistory I once had a 1976 Oldsmobile Delta 88. It was a used car and it was long gone now. I had to get rid of it because the gas tank began leaking. And the floors were rusted out so you could see the road going by through the holes in the floor. I covered them with plywood for a while but I finally had to get rid of it.
Sounds like it had some rust problems deluxe. Was that up north or near the ocean?

Imperial is a brand you didn't mention. For a good number of years, the Chrysler Corporation brands were Imperial, Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge and Desoto. During some years, Imperial was a model of Chrysler, the brand, while in other years it was its own brand. But it was always an expensive car, in competition with Cadillac and Lincoln. My parents' first three cars were two Studebakers and an Imperial.
And dont' forget Fargo too.."

Dad had the only 1964 Pontiac Laurentian in Otago. [Maybe the South Island]. A two tone green, it drew attention everywhere we went! I had it up to 115 mph on the speedo; it was great to drive. Sadly his business took a hit and we had to move on - I now only have pictures and memories of this great car. My children and grandchildren have no idea what they missed.

They should have discontinued the GMC or Chevy trucks. In my opinion. As for Pontiac I still see lots of people driving them. Most of them are beaten up.

My first car was a used 1966 pontiac tempest convertible I bought for $200 bucks in 1977. It wasn't a great car, but it was serviceable. Got me all the way from nirwalk, ct to lake George new york and return with NO problems. I miss that car

A friend in high school’s first car was an older model Oldsmobile. He called it a “Grandma Car”, but I loved riding in it! He maintained it well and he had it for three years until a reckless driver crashed into it while it was parked out on the street one night.

AMC had some unique looking cars. My brother’s first car was a used Pacer. My mom called it The Bubble. He had a girlfriend with a Gremlin. Cars used to have personality with the way they looked. Now they pretty much all look the same.

The Mercury was not a low priced car when introduced. It was slotted above the Ford cars, as an almost medium priced car brand.

When I lived in Toledo Ohio, it was an easy drive to Detroit for the annual Detroit Auto Show. I recall that the AMC cars were often relegated to some odd corner of Cobo Arena. When I had worked my way past the flashier, more popular displays, I was always struck by the way that the AMC area smelled of cigar smoke. Cheap cigars.
Then there was the infamous Yugo, the Yugoslavian car that was as cheaply made as it was cheap in price. It was so bad, people (myself included) were saying, "Yugo --- Yugo, it stays!"
That car had lots of fun jokes! Yugo when you push. It even came standard with a rear window defroster to keep your hands warm while you were pushing it. Thank you for watching Raymond!

The only brands that came to mind immediately were Datsun & Renault. Maybe I missed something in the video b/c I admit that I was doing some things while it was playing. But, I remember Datsun from my WAAAAAY back childhood in the late 70s - early 80s. Not sure when they went defunct. I believe they got swallowed up by Nissan or Toyota, or some other company.

I think there were a few models of Nissans that had both names listed on the vehicles as they tried to get people used to the name. What comes to mind is the 280z and the little pickups but I'm sure there were more. Thank you for watching!

Renault still produces cars and sells them in Europe. I am not sure when US sales ended.
So many brands went the way of the Dodo. Like Nash and their cute little Metropolitan. There was also Manic Motors in Canada, maker of the Manic GT, that produced only 160 cars in two years before going bankrupt. There was also the futuristic Bricklin SV1 that had a similar fate, though they managed to produce 2 854 cars in the short time period in which they were open.

At 9:03- The family of one of my grade school buddies bought a new Avanti (I wanna say 1965?). I thought it was pretty cool, very DEFINITELY different. Fun fact- the body styling was the work of Buckminster Fuller, of "geodesic dome" fame.

We had many of these cars at some point. My father was one of the people who invented the turbo charger. My favorite car was the DeLorean. Back in the 80's everyone wanted one. My first car was a DeSoto. My best car was a Mercury Park Lane convertible. I had an Isuzu truck made into a lowrider. Mom drove a 1966 Land Rover 109" wheelbase wagon.

Dad had a DeSoto when I was a wee kid, my uncle came up to Washington, where we lived, from Portland, it was hot, and he bellyached about it, our area was drier than his. Dad hit the a/c, and a couple of minutes later, my uncle was accusing him of trying to freeze him to death. Kept blowing reverse.. wish I’d been able to buy one before dad passed…
A really cool one was the Pierce-Arrow. I think they went out of business in the 40s, but I used to work in a big old building that used to be the Pierce Arrow factory in Buffalo New York. Pierce Arrow i think was the only American car company that wasn't based in Detroit. I've seen some at antique car shows and they were really nice.

@@RhettyforHistory yeah, they were in business from 1901 to 1938. They made expensive high-end luxury cars which were owned by a lot of stars and a lot of royalty around the world. No wonder they were so nice!! And the Pierce Arrow building I used to work in was designed by some famous architect and it's on the National Register of Historic Places. So it's no wonder I was so impressed with it. It was absolutely humongous and it was kind of in an Art Deco type style. Their only factory was in Buffalo, the only American car company that wasn't in Detroit.
That's all really interesting and it's definitely one I didn't know about.

The Bricklin SV-1 was a sports car company in New Brunswick Canada produced in 1974 and 1975. These were very cool cars with a gull wing design for the doors similar to Delorean. We still see them in car shows from time to time. They wers impressive
My mom had an AMC Pacer it was such a cute little car I loved it, it was like a mini station wagon, I told her I wanted that car when she was tired of it...of course I was only 13 so I would have to wait a lot, needless to say, she sold it (sigh) still kinda want it though 😁

Some of the defunct cars are not "brands" at all, but models. For example, the Edsel was a model of the Ford Company, not really a brand at all.

I had a 2001 Pontiac Trans Am and would like to have another one day, bought it used around '06 and it was the first car that I owned the title to. I wish there were more car companies like back in the 60's. All the cars looked unique and not the same bland thing. Love from Memphis~

My Mercury Cougar just turned 30 this year..
Still runs and looks like it just came off the showroom floor. Hands down the most reliable car I've ever owned.
Also missing: LaSalle (designed by Harley Earl..gorgeous cars). Bricklin.
I’m a fortunate fella, I picked up a 2009 Pontiac G6 GT, 4 years ago,with only 65,000 miles on the clock. It’s fully optioned, leather interior, sun roof, gauge package. The only option I don’t have is the adjustable pedal system, but that’s nothing. It now has 110,000 miles and runs like a champ, I did change the radiator, got rid of the resonator and added a performance chip and cold air induction. Stock that 3.5 liter V-6 had 220 hp, now it’s closer to 250-260 and runs like stink. 4 speed automatic with the option to shift semiautomatic if I want, and I use that a lot. I love this car and will keep it as long as possible, with regular maintenance and 3,000 mile oil changes. I’ll never understand why GM shut down Pontiac and kept Buick going, a real shame. 👍🇨🇦
Thank you for watching and sharing what you have. I've always scratched my head on the Pontiac thing as well. It always seemed like I saw more Pontiacs than I saw Buicks. But I think it was all tied into the Bailout. I'm not sure if they were told what they had to close or they picked. If they chose then it makes sense for Saturn. They made something too good there. But with sales it doesn't make sense with Pontiac.
The AMC was sold in 1987 to Chrysler. It was purchased for the Jeep line up of SUV's. Also, International Harvester made a SUV in the 70's into the early eighties that was quite popular with outdoor sportsmen.
Some others not mentioned are Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg, Geo, Nash, Hudson, Pierce-Arrow, and the more recent Fisker electric. But there are many many even lesser known and short-lived brands too if you really dig deep. Some whose names dot the landscape or pop culture like the Dort highway in Flint, Michigan, or the band REO Speedwagon. Michigan in particular and appropriately, is riddled with the remnants of past brands. Former repurposed or abandoned buildings, road and city names, etc. There is also a great museum in Auburn, Indiana that houses Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg vehicles. Some of the cars from those three brands alone were absolutely beautiful pieces of engineering and art. In some ways even by today’s standards. It’s definitely worth a stop in you are a car enthusiast. The much larger Petersen museum in Los Angeles is also great.
I kept waiting for Nash to come up when he talked about the Rambler.

Although International Harvester is known for Tractors, they also manufactured SUV’s from 1961 to 1980. Some say, the Scout paved the way to the modern SUV; and my first car was a 1972 Scout II that could go anywhere.

The Bricklin Company manufactured cars back in 1974 and 1975. They were a composite bodied car with Gull Wing Doors, and some say they were the template for the DeLorean DMC.
I miss the days when cars and manufacturers did not produce cars that looked alike.
Now a days, model to model, year to year; manufacturer to manufacturer, brands can’t be distinguished apart. 💯
I do think those old Internationals paved the way for a lot of the old Broncos and Blazers which later on gave way to the SUV's. You're right about cars now days looking all alike. Thank you for watching and sharing some of your memories!

I heard that one squadron plane was going to go to Australia first for a few days. I put my name on the list to go on that flight and it was approved. I was so excited I wanted to go to Australia so bad. A day before we were scheduled to leave they canceled the flight I was so disappointed. Australia always struck me as such an amazing place.

The first car I owned was a 1968 burgundy Pontiac LeMans. I loved that Pontiac wide track ride. The best looking car I owned was a white 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra. I can’t believe so many car brands not being made anymore.🚘🚘
I'm still driving my 2007 Saturn Ion. Aside from some pretty standard maintenance, it's going strong. I know other people who were driving them and only gave them up because they were totalled in accidents.
I posted later but my wife still drives her 2005 Vue. Over 200,000 on it. It was her family’s first new car any of them ever bought. She was raised somewhat poor as a Pastors kid and always bought used vehicles. I convinced her to buy new just before we married and she was in love. Still would rather drive her Vue than another new car. It has been a real trooper of a car.
They really were and still are still great cars! I know some of them are needing parts that they are pulling from ones that are in junkyards simply because they have been wrecked. Eventually parts will become an issue because GM isn't supporting that. It's a shame that brand isn't around anymore but I guess they made something too good. I'm still driving my 07 Vue. It's still going strong. It looks great considering its age. I've had it since 2009 and have had exactly zero issues with it. I've only had to replace the usual things that need replacement (tires, brakes, etc). It has never needed any major repairs.
My Brother & I shared a 1972 Olds Toronado.. that baby could MOVE! I also had a 1968 AMC Javelin. Loved that car, a 1973 Dodge Dart Swinger slang 6- banger ! Love the old Mopar
Suzuki is one of the best motorcycle brands. Not too many car enthusiasts care about their economy cars, still it could be nice to have these cars in US considering how high the gas prices are lately.
For some reason people weren't choosing Suzuki and I didn't really see a lot of them like you do in the bike world. There are a lot of options in the economy car market now. Thank you for watching!
@@RhettyforHistory Suzuki cars in mid 2000s were much smaller and cost about the same as bigger Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla and other brands. In US/Canada most people want cars as big as they can get for the price.
Speaking of Suzuki motocycles, my husband had a very well kept Volusia. He sold it to a guy who had lost his in a divorce, the guy kept walking around my husband's bike saying "I have looked at a lot of bikes. People advertise that their bike is clean... THIS bike is clean." 😉
If they were the same price as Toyota and Honda then that was a mistake on their part. The other issue is the reliability as they never had the longevity that those other two have had.
Chevy’s Geo Metro was a Suzuki, and it didn’t serve as good advertising for them.

My first car was a Chevrolet Malibu, canary yellow, black interior, black top convertable.
Edsel and DeLorean were very short lived. Ford's Edsel was a no-go back in '59 and the DeLorean was gone in '83 and by '85, it was popularized in the movie Back To The Future.
One company that was left out was GEO, which was affiliated with General Motors Corporation and Toyota. They made the Geo Prizim, which actually was a redressed Toyota Corolla model. They also made an SUV version, and the company lasted only 5 years or so. The Prizim was well made, had great gas mileage.
Good one! My College GF drove a Geo Metro. By the way, is Suzuki still a thing? I remember in the "jeep" phase of the 90's, there was the Suzuki Sidekick.
Geo was a pretty good car and especially when that Prism came in. My mom had one of those and she drove it until she got t-boned and she was really upset about that. It was a 96 and the only parts I ever replaced on it were the ones that said general motors on it. So for the alternator as an example, it went out in 99 just after the warranty expired. I replaced it with a Toyota one after that and it was good until she got in the wreck which was about 6 years later. Thank you for watching!
Camren, Suzuki is still around and making cars in Japan but not in America. I had it as one of the brands in the video. The motorcycles are still made and sold in America though.
The Geo Metro was made by Suzuki.
One model not shown was the Pontiac Fiero, a mid-engine 2-seater sports car from the early 1980s that was great fun to drive.

My grandfather had an Edsel. It sat in the parking at his house for 25 years. He mostly walked everywhere. They would only take the car to go to the beach on Sunday after church. One day when my dad was in his 20's, they were all sitting on the porch and the shock tables rusted out. The body went right through the shocks, all four at the same time. My grandfather looked at the car and sighed "Well, I guess it's time to get rid of it". Everyone laughed. 😂
My parents had the red and white Gremlin that was shown. I learned to drive and got my license with that car!

I know that GM used the same tooling across it's brands, but nothing beat the Pontiac Trans Am as a fun, almost Corvette kind of ride. Even the "Knight Rider" models were just a touch better than the Camaro of the same years, until the IROC Camaro came out. Loved my T/A, glad it didn't kill me!😂
Had a friend killed in his pride and joy GTO with big block and 6 pack carbs. Fast as hell but poor brakes and handling and it got him. Sad situation.

My dad had a 1957 Olds 98 and 1968 Olds Toronado.He did get good fuel mileage out of the Toronado

The Jeep was actually developed by the American Bantam Corporation out of Butler, PA. The government was concerned about the small company's ability to mass produce the Jeep. Ford and Willys-Overland were allowed to build it under license ( and Ford actually made alot more during WWII than Willys ). After the war, American Bantam had went out of business & Willys-Overland proceeded to build Jeeps for both military & civilian use.
