  • New Railroad Crossing Installed BUT NOT for Train
    We all know about the FEC Overseas Railway that went into the Florida Keys and Key West whose first passenger train arrived in 1912 and operations went on until 1935 when the Labor Day Hurricane destroyed the tracks and washed away most of all the infrastructure. At that point, the former ROW was turned into US 1 and FL City became the Southern Terminus for the FEC line just South of Homestead and at the tip of mainland FL and the continental United States of America. It went from passenger service to freight service hauling produce mostly. Toward the end of the line there was a spur that branched off the main around Naranja that serviced Homestead Air Force Base located at SW 288th Street in Homestead, FL. Military trains were a common site here during the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962 when Fidel Castro was hiding missiles from the USSR in Cuba and the world was on the brink of nuclear war! Despite all this history FEC decided to sell part of the Miami Extension to the city for an elevated rail system aka Metrorail in 1984 and the rest of the line in 1988 to make a busway which in my opinion displayed lack of vision because today it would've been prime real estate for Brightline trains. The railroad crossing at SW 137th Ave had two small WRRS cantilevers with signals but I don't remember crossing gates but it could've had them. The final traces of the Air Force base spur were removed around 2017 and now it is but a distant memory. FEC even had a connection with the CSX Homestead Subdivision formerly Seaboard Air line tracks built in 1926. RailROL82 Good afternoon Roly,Who would've ever thought That they would install RXR crossing at a bus way,I'm really surprised there doing this,My guess is to keep the cars from running the red lights and too stop people from getting seriously injured or even loosing there lives,I think this should have been done long time ago,I've seen these buses on this bus way move pretty fast,I have also seen people run the red lights when buses we're approaching just in a hurry to go nowhere.Roly my friend I hope to see more updates on the progress of these RXR crossing gates,As always I enjoy Watching all your video's The history that's behind all the abandoned railroads you have done over many years,All the abandoned unused or Rarely used spurs,Especially the Hialeah water plant spur thank you for sharing another memorable video Roly the abandoned railroad archeologist.Have a blessed evening 👍👍👍👍👍

    My hometown has a mix of Siemens signals and safetran signals. When union Pacific replaced one of 2 gate crossings with quad gates, they forgot to take the old gates. I spoke with them while watching them do construction recently and they told me that when I'm ready, I can get the old gates. Now, they have been sitting for years and is likely nonfunctional but is a piece of history to me. You are my inspiration for collecting railroad stuff. Thank you

    They are going to be installed at every intersection, but they are a couple of years away until the new transitway is built and dedicated. The whole Busway will be transformed into a transitway, with enclosed stations and all. Sixty-foot electric articulated buses with doors on both sides to allow platform boardings will travel at high speeds. The gates are necessary to allow buses to cross intersections at higher speeds, because we all know people here do not obey red lights.
    You can see some of the stations being built now. Marlin Road and Krome Avenue are more advanced in its construction phase. They are designed so that if funds become available for rail conversion, they will only need minimal modifications.
    BTW, you were in the heart of Princeton and the gateway to the Redlands (known locally as God's Country}, and just minutes from my humble home.😀

    I woke up with a skull-cracking migraine thanks to today’s weather front coming in, so I had to watch this twice to make sure I wasn’t losing my mind! A railroad crossing for a BUS lane…welp, I’ve seen it all now! But it’s still great to see them being repurposed for something equally vital instead of consigned to a scrapyard somewhere. Great catch, Roly!
    P.S. I grew up several miles from Route 1 in Maryland, and it was one of the main roads my friends and I cruised on going to the nearest “mall town,” and now my older daughter lives on Route 1 (just-off-campus student housing) because she’s going to the University of Maryland for the next four years to complete her undergraduate and post-graduate studies. Anyway, Route 1 begins/ends in Key West and goes all the way up to CANADA-I actually followed it on Google Earth once just out of curiosity, the same way I do with old railroad lines. Traveling the length of it by car is one of the things on my bucket list-only time will tell if I get to accomplish that!

      I have - and in Florida. (They have them in Connecticut as well - for pedestrians (usually at train stations) but a busway (miles from the nearest train) is a new one on me. could it be for the pedestrians crossing the busway?

    • @gravelydon7072
      @gravelydon7072 Рік тому

      @@PGHammer21A No. It is for the buses so that they don't have id10ts coming around the corners when the lights are red. You see them make right turns on red even though there are signs up that say " No Turns on Red". We have a 5 way intersection at US-1 and SW 304th Street. Someone is always turning right on red even though there are no turns on red signs up in all directions. And yes, they have accidents there and now have traffic cameras so they have the violators on video.

    US Route 1 is one of the longest roads in the country. The northern end of Route 1 is located in Fort Kent, ME while the southern end is in Key West, FL. From north to south, the route stretches 2369 miles. I've thought it would be a fun idea for a while now to fly down to Miami so I could drive down to Key West and explore the southern end of Route 1. I also thought the same to drive north from my home in Maine to visit the northern end of Route 1 which is marked by a stone tablet at end of the international bridge leading into Canada. For me, that would be a nearly 200 mile drive just to get there.

    This is a different way to use railraod crossing gates to control vehiclular traffic. I presume that the main reason for using railroad crossing gates is to keep the buses on schedule. The gates will keep vehicles from blocking the busway. Buses will be able to proceed parallel to the U.S. 1 traffic when the U.S. 1 lights are green. Without the gates vehicles on the cross street would be close to the edge of U. S. 1 and they would be blocking the busway. Are they putting gates up at other streets that cross U.S. 1?

    There is a similar situation in Chelsea Massachusetts (near where Route 1 passes through Boston) but the busway just has regular traffic signals. I can't help thinking that this isn't legal and does not conform to government regulations. A gate of some sort would be okay but this is too much like a railroad crossing and may not be kosher.

  • @armandoperez7967
    @armandoperez7967 2 роки тому +1

    Insane! Rip up the highway and put in the tracks! In 1988, the track was removed! To me, crossing gates should only be used for railroads and drawbridges! This is an insult to railroads! New gates, new signal circuits, all as if a train is coming! New stations, all designed for ground level trains in the future and not elevated trains! But in order to put the tracks back, you have to connect the busway route to the CSX Wye tail track like it used to be or restore the Ludlam corridor. The monstrosity that was built along the Ludlam corridor between Bird Rd and I believe SW 48 St was horrendous and all but destroyed a useful corridor that together with the South Dixie Highway corridor is far superior to the CSX line, the southern part of which is being abandoned anyway and leaves no rail service in south Miami Dade County! A true travesty! Thanks Railrol for reporting this, no one else will!

    • @gravelydon7072
      @gravelydon7072 Рік тому

      Unless you have a picture of that connection, it never existed. I've lived here for 60 years and there has never been a connection in that time even when the FEC and SAL were operating the two lines. The FEC Wye was located an the area where Homestead Plaza is located. The tail track for the SAL stopped short of the FEC tracks. A 1950s postcard picture also shows no connection. Now how do I know the picture was from the 50s or earlier? Because it had a 2cent postage stamp that no longer was used after 1958.

      @@gravelydon7072 Nice to hear from you again! Merry Christmas and happy new year to you and your family! I stand corrected. Don, you know more about South Florida’s past than most, and I bet you know more about the Ludlam Trail agreement. I believe the county and the business and real estate developers BROKE the rails to trails agreement in the Bird Road and SW 70 Ave area. If I recall correctly, any development was supposed to leave a twenty five foot right of way for possible rail line use in the future should it be needed. As per google, the large apartment complex built there absolutely made this requirement impossible and left no way for a rail right of ray to be reestablished. And now the CSX ex SAL will likely be a trail, busway, or the extension of SR 874.

    Yes to train wreck restaurants! US #1 starts in Maine, I believe, and ends in Key West. Turning abandoned railway right-of-way into a bus way make perfect use of abandoned railways. With crossing gates will make these crossings much safer for both bicycles and buses from right on red turning vehicles. Glad to hear deserted railways are being repurposed for other uses. Thank you for letting us know that railways are being used for other society's needs!
