- In today's video, we'll be preparing to say goodbye to all my Black-breasted leaf turtles (Geoemyda spengleri) as they go away... into winter dormancy until spring! This is my first time properly overwintering my leaf turtles so I wanted to share my process with you all! Hope you enjoy!

Thanks so much for watching everyone! It's going to be weird not seeing my black-breasted leaf turtles for a few months but this is best for them! Especially I hope to reproduce them in the new year! Fingers crossed Special thanks to all my Reptiliatus Channel Patrons for helping make videos like this possible! Oh thank goodness you meant brumation! I was a little scared for a second that you were rehoming the turtles. This channel introduced me to so many unique reptiles I never would've realized existed!
Rest assured the googly-eyed friends aren't going anywhere!
Do spangleri brumate? As far as i know Spangleri cqme from tropical climate habitat
Turtles are funny little creatures. Always make me smile.
Me too!
I personally put all my reptiles into brumation. Reptiles and research published a video about a year ago on brumation where they talked about a study on black rat snakes. Half of these snakes lived in an area where they had to brumate, and the other ones didn't. They found that the snakes going through brumation on average lived for 10 years longer than the ones who didn't. So not only does it replicate the natural year cycle, giving them a form of enrichment, it also extends their lives substantially. Of course, these were only black rat snakes but it still gives an indication of what brumation could do for other reptiles. Or at least north-American colubrids.
Bingo! Dillon's channel is fantastic! Very good points in favour of it!
I love these guys so much! The first time I saw them was at the zoo in Houston, Texas and I fell in love. Now I make sure to go visit them every time I take a trip to the zoo. They are such cool little critters. I hope to have a pair of my own in the future.
Me too! They are such personalities! I hope you get to own a pair someday! Glad you can see them at the zoo!
The title had me so worried;; glad it was just a tease! Those turtles r SO CUTE!!!!! liked to see the cam sped up them swimmin around & eating
It was cheeky of me but it wasn't dishonest! They are adorable! Imagine a baby haha
I’m in the UK and had to order that book from the US, cost a lot and took ages. Hardly anyone in the UK keeps these, but I found out the one on the cover of the book lives about 8 miles from me!!! It’s a small world!!!
That’s too neat! Thanks for sharing!
Love it! Well you got my attention 😂! Thank you for sharing ❣️
Haha thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Thank goodness you're keeping them. And breeding them for conservation. They need to be preserved
Absolutely! Trying to do my part to make more of them! Unfortunately they won't really contribute to conservation but they would increase captive bred representation!
Those CUTE faces though!!!!!🐢❤️🐢
The best! Going to miss seeing them!
Nice video. Found your channel through watching reptiles at home. Keep the turtle content coming! 😍
Thank you very much!
I need to go into brumation. I need a nap for awhile
Me too lol!
Oh! Grrrrrr! You got me....I was already scripting in my mind how to express to you my displeasure and heartbreak. You have a bit of scallywag in you...but I still love you and all your critters.
I'm sorry I upset you! To be fair, it's literally farewell for 3 months! Hope you understand the tasteful play on the title. I don't like to clickbait but this was honest, good fun!

😊😄 I should have put a bunch of smiley faces and laughing faces so you would know that I was just being humorous. I'm that fan that doesn't correspond very often but when I do I like to keep it light and funny and on point. Just a fluffy kinda sassy, adorable ( cuz my darling husband tells me so) old broad was a wicked sense of humor😉😊 and strong in sarcasm. One of the reasons my husband says that he married me almost 25 years ago is because I can so easily crack my own self up😂🤣😍 no reason to apologize or be concerned, but I was so glad that you let us in on it early on in the video so that the relief was pretty instant in regards to the adorable Turtle crew. Been a fan for a long time and you just keep up the good work.
Such cute little guys enjoy your snooze 🐢😴
I really like the enclosure you have set up for these lil derps!
P.S. what camera/lens do you use to record? Your videos are always super crisp and edited very nice.
Thanks so much! Eventually I may do front opening tanks but this has been working very well so far!
Aww man you got me. I'm glad the turtles aren't going anywhere. I am confident you got this brother. Your level of care is out of this world.
Thanks so much man! Appreciate the support!
Cute wittle tuwtle
🐢✨
Love your Black Breasted
Leaf Turtles 🐢 !!
They have some freaky eyes 👀 !!
Thank you so much!
The Ca/P ratio really plays a pivotal role in the healthy growth of their shell. There is a hearsay that the addition of the calcium powder could somewhat be conducive in the healthy growth of their carapace.
Thanks for sharing! I give all my leaf turtles cuttlefish bone and they all seem to enjoy eating it!
I really want to have one.. They are adorable.. I've done all my research hand have friends who had them for years. I just don't have the time!.
Hopefully some day!
Dang man, my heart skipped a beat when I read the title 😅
Haha sorry! It wasn't a lie though! :P
@@Reptiliatus hahaha I'm glad y'all doing alright
@@flowersinformaldehyde ☺️🙏🏼 hope you are well too!
How dare you play with my heartstrings like that! I was so scared something horrible happened to the turtles 😭
Sorry! Haha
Colubrids, like western hognose, benefit from brumation.
Exactly! Thanks for commenting!
The faces! The names! SQUEE-WORTHY! 🥰
Hehehe
Hello great video information and update Dayyan
Thank you very much!
I'm super relived haha
Brumation is such a fascinating thing! I myself don't brumate my two snakes, because both species are from equatorial Africa and experience wet and dry seasons which their species are still apparently very active during, by anecdotal reports.
It’s very interesting indeed! As an example, red tailed boas will go off food and hide during the dry season but most people don’t réalise this and continue to feed them all year round, sometimes leading to obesity.
Sounds like you did your research! Well done!
such cool looking turtles
Right? I absolutely love them!
Those turtles are gorgeous! 🥰
Thank you kindly!
I don't plan on breeding them but I still give my leopard geckos a brumation every year and it works perfectly, they seem to benefit from it :D
Exactly! It's not just about breeding! It most certainly would affect overall health and longevity in my opinion.
He said it wasn't clickbait yet people are complaining about clickbait. 🤦🏼♀️ Clearly people don't take the time to watch the full video.
It was definitely clickbait but In a good way if say lol
@@swan1098 lol true.
Got me with the title for a sec haga
Haha its true though but sorry :P!
These turtles are so cool. My 2yr old loves turtles so I'm looking into getting 1 for her.
They are amazing animals!
Turtle: ima take this and go…
He always does that! Takes fast food to a whole other level haha!
QOTD: Our corn snake brumates and the our Uromastyx, Russian Tortoise, Green Anoles and Ackie Monitor all really slow down. They do it on their own with the change of seasons. I don't even change their heating/lighting, they just head over to the cooler sides. Our four year old pair of Australian Water Dragons, however aren't showing any signs of getting ready to go down. I may have to intervene to get those Canadian captive offspring in the future!
Hehe cool 👍
Thanks!
FOR A SECOND I THOUGHT THEY PASSED AWAY 😭
No! They are doing great! 😅🙏🏼
@@Reptiliatus XD
I want one, these aren't cheap 😂
Unfortunately you are correct
Omgosh, brumation! Click bait! I’m missing my babies too
Lookit Sabzi in the background all jelly the vids not about her, or is that Basil? Hard to tell that far away
Hahaha 😉!
That’s Basil! ☺️🦎✨
Aw yes he is one of my females 😂😂
I would say tortoises benefit from going through the winter dormancy right now my baby tortoise Jimmy is going through that process and when he wakes up he's gonna have a big outside enclosure with a female so I think he'll be happy when he wakes up
Absolutely! A lot of tortoises do (Russians for example)!
The leaf turtles are a fb for sure
My red iguana, corn snakes and leopard geckos have all started brumation already up where I live it's already been getting very cold so they started last month with their hibernation stages
Very good! Thanks for sharing!
does a iguana brumate ? isnt it a tropical reptile ?
@@sdqsdq6274 where I live it's really cold regardless of how I have her cage setup so depending on where they live they do in their own way go into a brumation I've been handling iguanas for 20 years and yes they can go into a type of brumation
@@sdqsdq6274 I'm going to be teaching about it on my channel coming up and showing her behaviors and everything and she is in doors for the winter but trust me they know the change in the season
In my opinion if you want a dog and don't have the time and money keep these guys!
They are incredibly different from dogs but are very rewarding to own as pets in their own special way! Thanks for watching!
@@Reptiliatus I love them and many people don't like the idea of keep inverts and reptiles because they are the odd. Many people say that only "fluffy" pets are actual pets and everything else is weird!!! disgusting
@@Reptiliatus tortoise and turtle are the dogs of reptiles , free roam, where you dont worry of escapes like lizard or snakes
How did you "treat" the leaf litter?
I was ready to scoop your turtles i case you're gonna sell them haha. Luckily they are just going in brumation haha
Haha not a chance! :P
Update
Heyy Dayyan, do you know if red eyed croc skinks hibernate aswell? keep up the nice Vid's!! ❤
As far as I know they don't but they would likely experience a more dry season and a wetter season. I do drop temperatures in the winter but I haven't noticed that it affects their activity and food drive much.
@@Reptiliatus thanks for letting me/us know!❤️💯
This is probably the first Clickbait video here. I always hibernated my animals, including bearded dragon, leopard geckos, corn snake, rosy boa and horned frogs. The Dragon had clear behavioral science of winter approaching evry year. some animals like the rosy boa and most temperate turtles that sleep through the winter actually benefit from this, and most keepers of them do it. But generally I think that most species that hibernate should be given the opportunity to do so. I think that it is actually cruel to not let them get dormant even if they are showing signs of shutting down.
I feel like this is appropriate clickbait though 😏. We truly are saying goodbye to the leaf turtles for 3+ months. I apologize for those who are interpreting it as me selling them, etc. I thought if anything the friends would have a little laugh 😅.
Thank you for your thorough response! I agree with you completely!
I used to keep Spenglers in my apartment. No brumation. I witnessed mating and one day I found a viable egg. Unfortunately, the baby was unable to get out of the egg. The little guy died in the egg fully developed.
Very cool! Sorry your baby didn't make it!
Garter snakes! Especially animals that are breeders.
Absolutely! Thanks for sharing!
Do they have to go into brumation since they aren’t wild?
Not really but it's healthy for them regardless :).
Did you ever produce any babies?
Not yet! I got several infertile eggs from a few females! I am hopefully that this will be the year!
What’s the price average for these?
Depends where but in the USA, usually around 1.5k at least for a hatchling.
I recently got a spengleri, she's not fullgrown yet...do you recommend I set her up for brumation even if she's not going to be breeding anytime soon? She's not a baby but not a fullgrown adult yet.
Hmmm personally I wouldn’t bother with it until they are at least around E.T’s size. He’s def not full grown either but he’s large enough I’m not worried. I think if they are past half grown it’s fairly safe to do depending how low you drop temps. Obviously I’m the wild young animals would overwinter or go dormant but there are always risks and I think that you minimize them by avoiding brumating younger turtles.
@@Reptiliatus Thanks!! I'll probably skip this year and wait till next. I live in South Florida so brumation is a little difficult where it's forever summer!
@@Danizard sounds like a plan!
This species does NOT bromate lol
You are mistaken lol. Anthony Pierlioni himself clearly shows that they do in his literature.
@@Reptiliatus I’m in Florida and have an adult pair they don’t brumate due to it being 75ish year round and still get a ton of breeding action come spring it’s not necessary for this species
Definitely nothing wrong with it and I was incorrect stating that they don’t brumate but mine don’t
PLEASE GET THE UNDERWOODIESAURUS MILLI
I gave you a thumbs down for the clickbait but after a couple of minutes of appreciating how much care and attention to detail you give your turtles I had to change it to a thumbs up.
But I wasssss saying goodbye to them! Three months is a long time! ;) Thanks for your support and viewership!
Brumate*
russian rat snakes
Great example! Thanks for sharing!
Rule #1 on UA-cam................Don't clickbait...................... (I didn't watch after the first minute.)
Then I guess you missed that it wasn't click bait... too bad! Wouldn't you say goobye to someone you care about leaving for 3 months?
Rule 1 of youtube is to not comment stupid things for attention.
@@Reptiliatus You admitted in the first minute that it WAS click bait............ Phoebe Zhang (the first person in my comments section) said she thought you were rehoming your turtles.
