completely early point but like the part in Locals during Gabby's lines (it'll wrap back around) is really fucking satisfying sonically, like it tickles the eardrums so wonderfully
ugh there's so many little bits of ear candy like that ALL OVER the album! Cops and robbers has a vocal chop riser leading up to the first verse's vocals, as well as the breakdown in the beat leading into the second chorus. the drums, specifically the crash cymbals, in Duhhhhhhhhhhhh are panned and bitcrushed SO perfectly. the looping vocal sample in You don't even know who I am makes the whole song. the occasional hits of twangy country guitars in Johnny johnny johnny also make that song. the percussion and SFX in Shoot to kill give it SUCH a unique sound, and the banjo in the 4th verse is a really nice switch up. the rising distorted guitar lead in Horror movie soundtrack gives it a sense of movement it wouldn't have otherwise. the mix of heavy, electronic percussion and twangy acoustic guitars in Seventyseven dog years sounds unlike anything else i've heard before. and the little melodic vocal sample in between all the chords in Uncanny long arms is a really nice subtle addition that keeps the wall of noise from becoming redundant. and then there's the tags "Good Luck!" and "Pony Up Motherfucker!" that hit the sweet spot in my brain every time underscores is a sound design genius
I completely agree! I didn't hear it until January of 2024, but it would have certainly taken the top spot on my favorite albums of 2023 list, maybe tied with Lana Del Rey's Did You Know That There's A Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard? Both albums have superb writing and production but completely different styles.
i think its the same for you dont know who i am, i noticed it seemed like it was an alt right extremist that was trans but he hated himself for that with the end of the song he finally frees himself from the hatred. even more with the video, with underscores who is trans, in the background while the guy in focus tries to ignore her while looking/inspecting guns, and with the end of the video the guy is nowhere to be seen you can only see grey in the frame while the song talks about having a great day putting on make up.
@@MsGenesisgamerYou don't even know who I am is not about the trans experience, although i do see where you're coming from. it's actually from the perspective of a deranged obsessed stalker fan - another character mentioned within the lore - whose popstar idol moves to their small town. the full lyrics in the final verse are "today is the best day of my life/ I invited myself in and/ wore your clothes, took your pills, cried your makeup off/ and for once, I felt just like you". yeah, not so much about having a great day wearing makeup lol. more like breaking into the house of someone you're unhealthily obsessed with and quite literally making yourself at home
I think you would have had an easier time (ish) interpreting some of the songs if you had known that this was a concept album centering around the stories of three characters (S*nny, Old Money Bitch, and Mara). I think each character represents a different part of Underscores, as she navigated growing up trans in the Midwest. To me, "Uncanny long arms" is about reconciling the different parts of herself and becoming this one new "final girl." The final girl in a horror movie is the one who survives until the end and it feels like she is the final girl. The story is extremely well told and I'm so impressed it came from someone as young as Underscores.
Ik I’m coming to this one late, but I was just curious if you’ve ever heard of brakence? :0 I feel like you’d love his latest album since you’re so in love with this one
@@rileyreacts7610 If you ever start running low on the music backlog, I’d highly suggest his album hypochondriac!! It’s what venus fly trap is on :p All the tracks transition seamlessly so a casual front-to-back listen through is ideal.
btw you may wanna pin this for future.
trigger warning for grooming on track “johnny johnny johnny”

i believe geez louise is about the trans experience and links back to a trans character that is involved in the whole lore of wallsocket
