  • Waiting on Your Best Behaviour #58:
    For today's episode I had the idea to do an analysis video of my Round 3 game. I was initially going to do this solo, but then I found myself watching Fil's stream and the Risk servers were down. So not to miss an opportunity to talk to Fil and Curlza at the same time we sat down to nitpick this game and I'm so happy with the result. We did this show in a sort of DVD commentary style.
    Fil is a top grandmaster. Reached #1 on the world leaderboard. A grandmaster in Fixed and Progressive he helps you get better at Risk showing all modes and styles with his work on Twitch and UA-cam.

    / @riskyfil8955
    Curlza is a top grandmaster. Top 20 on the world leaderboard with 1v1s, reached top 100 playing 6 player progressive unfiltered. He's also a hilarious and kind person and a friend of mine.

    Please go and give these guys a follow, a watch and a listen. They are some of the best players in the game of Risk today.
    I LOVE these settings. They are so hard. Everyone fucks them up. INCLUDING MYSELF!
    Congrats and good games to Nuke, Exalt, Draumdansarn and Medi. Looking forward to facing off against all of you again in the near future. Please know that the tone of this video is analytical. Everyone makes mistakes so none of this was said with the aim of cutting anyone up or making them feel less than. We are all about learning here.
    I really hope you enjoy!

    Okay, yeah, this analysis style video was very very VERY awesome. I think this works because it's a tourney game, with something on the line and good player level. Curlza and Fil were great choices for this. Great vid man.

      This conversation worked as a podcast I'd say.
      How can I miss the chance to get you and Curlza back on the show!

    I've watched this the full way thru twice now, and it's quite interesting every time. Not often that GMs tell GMs that they missed a win, and it's even rarer than a non-GM makes a move that confuses 3 GMs collectively, but one sentence from the non-GM and the three GMs go "oooohhhhhhh that makes sense". It's always a wonderful feeling to learn something new like this.
    Fantastic format overall. You should do more replay reviews in general, but especially reviews of top games with top commentators (in addition to your fine self of course).

    what an absolute delight. Stellar analysis, and breakdown of just about everything that occurred/took place in this game =) The way this game shaped up, i was not going to be generating as many troops as Pete, and i did not have a good stranglehold on the borders, resulting in me being broken. Better to have a bird in hand, than 10 on the roof, or something along those lines ;D an interesting observation too is (looking in retrospect: Exalt did not advance. despite the fact that Exalt took first place this game with the bounty on me he did not make it to R4). So looking back at how this game shaped up, i would have to say this was pointwise my "best case scenario" for a chance at advancing on to the R5 =) 48 points with the cut-offs at 50.5 or something, i would only have needed a bounty, and the same kill order in the R4 game, in order to advance. As always thanks for making these videos Pete, and also a big thanks to all those who participate in the WoyBB

      And that's some of the most interesting stuff to me. The slight disagreements or variation in style between other top players.

    Hey Pete! I‘m one of the guys that got swept in via the YT algorithm a couple weeks ago! I stayed because the content is awesome ;) after having watched like 50 videos pf yours I can confidently say this was your most interesting/entertaining video yet! Thanks for that! As a poker nerd that loves in-depth shit in general I am of course not representative of the average viewer, so don’t take my word for gospel! :P Thanks for so much great content! (Also, a Mini-suggestion: put a limiter on your mic audio, your LOUD moments kill ears :o )

      I loved doing this one. The in depth stuff is a bit niche but those who like it really like it.
      I have a new mic now so hopefully it is more gentler on the ears.

    Awesome recap! I do not believe you could get the 31 territories, looked like maybe 28, just to many stacks that were a couple to big at the end of your run. That is if your troops had been in the right the position for the try. Very interesting game, someone goes for a 2nd bounty or the first human, and the game ends. This seemed to happen in a few games. Thanks for having Curlza and Fil on. The I.Q. is off the charts. I felt like Medi could have done something different near the end stage to make things interesting, he did not fortify back to block Exalt. Imo he should have.

    Really enjoyed the "value of cards" in Fixed discussion at 1:09:41. I also use an "expected card value" of 3 for simplicity but the 1 thing you guys didn’t touch on is the negative value of cards being an unrealized asset that makes you attractive to kill. Obv more of a Prog issue than Fixed but given the choice of having 9/12/15 extra troops or 3/4/5 cards I'd want the troops as Risk is a game of survival & more troops+fewer cards makes me less attractive to fight.

    • @acallan1
      @acallan1 2 роки тому

      Somewhat relatedly I was surprised @Risky Fil regularly chains kills in Fixed given how rare cost effective kills are. I get his mental calculations give him an advantage & limits the risk of other players teaming up against you/suiciding but it adds the risk of bad rolls throwing the game to 2nd place & given how rare smart teamwork is in FFA I'd rather make huge stacks on choke points & force them to weaken each other for me

    • @TheKillPeteStrategy
      @TheKillPeteStrategy  2 роки тому +1

      That's true. I didn't mention the opportunity cost/risk of getting yourself killed. Good point.
      It's funny you should say about chaining kills... no spoilers but check out this week's Fixed Friday.

      It’s an excellent way to peer into the mind of you folks and learn to what it is that you’re weighing when you make moves. I was shouting the same thing Curlza kept saying about stacking on the Exalt border.
      A well played game though and certainly a lot easier for me to armchair when I have no pressure and all that. I hope to take part in the next FFA tournament

    I haven’t watched much tourney play, what is the reasoning for having a bot in each match rather than all human opponent Play With Friends games, just something to move the bounty action fwd & avoid stalemates?

    • @TheKillPeteStrategy
      @TheKillPeteStrategy  2 роки тому

      For the official tournament we have event helpers who's job it is to record the game ID so SMG can check if there are any bugs, suspected collaboration, etc.
      The EH bots out immediately after hosting the game and recording the ID.

    At 1:10:04 Green removes the guard against the 17. You keep the guard there the rest of the game. Does it make sense to move that stack to somewhere else since you already have a trust guard with green? It would mean you only need 3 guards instead of 4 and wouldn't be spread quite so thin. Or is keeping that stack there part of the future equation of getting the 70% and keeping kill lines open?

  • @7bismar
    @7bismar 2 роки тому +1

    I think the core mistake in this game was actually at 29:28 when the decision to leave 4 down below in the center is made, primarily because you do know Nuke and you could have gifted him the below capture, which would have created a more pressured confrontation between Exalt and Nuke, along with creating more pressure on the other two to take Nuke's captures. The rest of the game is interesting as hell, but even at the points where if trusting Exalt not to ruin both of your games by sitting 32 on the western front, the reaction from the two east would have been different, and Exalt would have seized that opportunity.
    Shaping the pressure from Nuke in the middle would have opened up a greater line of attack everywhere for you, even if you are giving a capture away in the short term.

    In the beginning, it was quite annoying and cumbersome to have the audio from the original video overmeshing with the live audio, made it difficult to understand what folks were saying at some points, just FYI.
    That said, this was a fucking fantastic video, perhaps the best on the channel, and you should absolutely do more of these.
