  • US-built (ABS Class) conversion vessel is built on an Offshore Supply Vessel (OSV) which transforms into a long-range, ocean-proven Global Expedition Yacht. The conversion will cost roughly one-third as much as a 'white yacht', and can be converted in as little as 16 months. They do make nice boats. Glad a few are being put back in some kind of service. (Even if that means being sold and retrofitted) I was a captain with ECO on OSVs for a couple months shy of 20 years.

    What fantastic quality base vessels these are, and everything fitted to them will also be top quality, and they will have been meticulously maintained.
    What the Interviewee said about the layer of a tar like substance beneath the deck timbers protecting the steel, which, when removed revealed the steel to be in as new condition speaks well of this class of vessel!
    Once retired from commercial work they are the smart buyers choice on which to build their dream yacht!
    These OSV's make excellent vessels for the Expedition class yacht conversions.
    Thank you for the walk around of this lovely vessel, which truly has the Rolls Royce of bow thrusters!

    If I ever hit the Lotto this is the vessel I'd look for. Screw those floating Chlorox bottle yachts. These are boats with attitude.

    Been on a lot of ships and I've never seen a Caterpillar engine run the bow thruster. Now I want one of these.

    Nothing like the bridge over the bow. For one wild ride in tough seas.

    I worked on most of the Chouest seismic research vessel from 84 to 88 engine room and traveling to Norway to get some OSV to transform to ORV and was on the Betty Chouest when they add the first dynamic position and then worked on the brand new New Venture rolling vessel for Shell ...also for Texaco on the Edison they where Cadillac back then and always transform and modified but also many issue...

    Thank you for so many informative videos. Once the conversion is complete, what size crew would she need to operate and maintain?

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts  Рік тому

      Technically its the same size crew for vessel operations, but you have to add the housekeeping crew for the owners and guests.

    Thanks for sharing this information! How much money and time will this save from the normal process of design/build of a yacht?

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts  2 роки тому +9

      You are saving at least a year and a half if you include design, engineering, getting shipyard bids etc. And you are saving 50-70% in cost compared to a new build.

    Would you think there's donor for 35-40m vessel? Commercial ship usually came bigger don't they? With the growth of this pocket explorer yacht I think this is a space we all should monitor

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts  2 роки тому +1

      Absolutely. There are plenty of worthwhile 35-40 meter commercial vessels, such as patrol boats and research ships that are suitable for conversion.

    How many liters/ gallons per hour at cruising speed, $2 million makes it affordable, But are they thirsty.
    Love the channel, and the technical info.

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts  2 роки тому +1

      Fuel Consumption: 600 litres/hour @ cruising speed
      >(Note: consumption depends on cruise time, & longer non-stop cruising, the lower the consumption for example- 5 days non-stop sailing @ 380 litres/hour)

    Does your company do tugboat conversions as well? They would seem to be great candidates for a refitting.

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts  Рік тому

      Offshore tugs can make great conversions - such as Sea Wolf and Itasca. Harbor tugs tend to be all-engine and deep draft. Not great cruisers, but plenty of character.

    I have a question: what is the maximum size for these donor vessels? If a buyer wants to build an ice-class, 140+ meter yacht, would they find a donor? Bear in mind the beam should now be around the 18-20 meters.

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts  2 роки тому +1

      From time to time you can find a vessel available like 100-meter Aiviq with a beam of 24.4 meters. Let me know if you need one.

    About 14kn/12mph at about 100gph/2,400gpd.
    With standard 170,000-gallon tanks, the duration off-shore without re-supply is approximately two months?

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts  2 роки тому +1

      On station for work, their consumption would be less, running DP and hotel services. Often this fuel is used for re-supplying the offshore platforms.

    Does this company work with smaller vessels in the 100 to 149 ft range ? And how much would a conversion for the smaller boats cost ..specifically for electric engined boats...meaning dual 400 kw lithium banks to power the 1 to 2 kw electric engines and of course keeping those 20k gal tanks for the generators

    • @ExpeditionYachts
      @ExpeditionYachts  2 роки тому

      There are some smaller research vessels and crew boats that can be converted. Pm@xploreryachts.com

    Some white yacht builders are just discovering DP like it's the second coming. Not realising PSVs and OSVs have had this for decades. Same with diesel-electric.

    If u hve enough geo hotels u hve internet mobil power station 1 to another, + ground based radar too. Attacking storms at sea will be a real thing. Collecting fresh water at sea & driven back in water bladders following storms at sea real thing to wet the desert on earth fighting storm where they r born.

    I’m sure conversions like this will be bought by Russian Oligarchs. It would be hugely expensive to operate a ship like this and only multi billionaires have that kind of money,or at least “had” that kind of money.
