All radials have too much gain reduction from 10-11 db in case of ProRMP, to JCR and X-Amp. But transformer-based ones can be easily modified, just remove two resistors that formed voltage divider before transformer. Both ProRMP and JCR will be more controllable if you need more output.

For JCR location of divider is different, I should find photos of JCR and exact resistor number, but such modification works nice. Also similar approach applicable to Reamp.V2, there is also divider before transformer. Maybe it`s is also possible for X-Amp, but it`s complicated, at least I need good photos of PCB inside from both sides to analyze schematics.
First modification was to bypass 2 of 3 resistors: www.dropbox.com/s/36ntf8tji93keh6/ProRMP_mod_p2.JPG?dl=0, but better to remove all 3 and solder some wire instead of first 2 as in first picture.

I kicked my x-amp to the curb a long time ago. After years of trying to figure out why my tones were worse than they were before I started reamping. I thought my playing was just sloppier. I did everything I could to better my playing and nail my DIs. Lo and behold. Change out the x amp and it was magic. Another big help was getting rid of the J48 DI box and getting a countryman. The J48 is super dark and lacks natural pick attack in comparison.

Sorry. Adding boost is not what a reamp is supposed to do. You can do it (or other things) with any signal. You want as clean as possible for a reamp, then boost, cut , eq as much as you like with the amp. It is not a signal modifier, its a level step-down (supposed to be)

That is maybe the real secrete sauce. You can have the best guitar with the best pick-ups, the best pedals, interface, plugins. All that combined will sound really good but the details, that little extra pinch of spice, that will take something good and make it great. Potentially, it can equally make something that is good into something less good as shown with the X-amp. Spotting that difference takes a lot of experience and most of all A/B testing.
If you have only one of something and it's always part of your signal chain, go barrow another one from a friend, buy and re-turn one from a store. A/B test every piece in your signal chain and never settle. Most (online) stores have great re-turn policies, use them.

I'm curious to see how the radial would do compared to the others if it was clean-boosted to the same level going into the amp.
Obviously still not as good, since you'd be boosting the noise floor as well, but it would be cool to hear how much of the tone is just from the amp being driven harder by a louder signal and how much is the radial box actually changing the tonal quality of the signal.

X-Amp is active reamp-box, transformer (same as in ProRMP) only on secondary output. Main problem is overall gain reduction in all 3 Radial`s units. I think that engineer`s intent was provide reamping capabities for vintage sound, not metal where you need recreate large output signal.

    • @regortex3364
      @regortex3364 4 роки тому +2

Lucif de Luther -there’s no overall gain reduction, you’re supposed to level match coming out of your DAW, or source. The Angry Signal Art adds 6dB boost which could be cool. You could also run the Signal coming out the reamp into a boost or overdrive pedal to add level or gain if you like, that’s what most people will do anyway.

Curious to see if you could make a follow up video comparing it to the Radial JCR as I feel like most people that picked up a reamp box likely got that. Is the Angry an active reamp box? JCR is passive, so if the Angry one is active. There could be a benefit to having both 🤔 If the Angry is passive, then the JCR would be a more proper comparison to the Radial equivalent.

Hey. First of all, apologies for the long comment, but this is something that I've been having issues to find proper information about.
I would love to hear about FRFR powered speakers/cabs, and in general, the best ways to play at home using amps with load boxes and IRs or any type of cab simulation, without being stuck next to the PC or with my headphones. This can include anything from a Torpedo Capture, or a completely digital solution like AxeFx or the Helix units.
I'm specially curious, because I remember one of your complaints on cheap practice amps with built-in modeling was the use of tweeter speakers and it's full range response, but I guess if you are playing a simulation of a a cab mic'ed, you kinda need to do that, since you're trying to emulate the full sound the mics capture, as opposed to the direct behavior of a speaker. Crappy modeling will be crappy, but that specific point of the response of the speakers made me wonder what would an acceptable solution would be instead. I know I can always bypass the cab emulation and connect straight to one, but the possibilities of IRs are amazing, and with so many gear coming that allows you to play with those without being stuck to a PC made me want to look for viable options.
Love the show, keep it up!

The entire purpose of reamping has a for control after the fact. One big thing people miss is these reamp boxes are not for recording tracks at the pre mixing stage, they are for tweaking after the main mix is finalized but the guitars need to be adjusted and the original performer is not there. This is why no reamp will ever and I mean ever will sound as if the original player is playing the instrument because humans tend to very attacks on strings based on what they are hearing on the cans. It’s a tool but not a replacement for a real human interaction with a real amp.

The only use for a DI is if you want to track the amp at the same time or the guitarist can't play his part without hearing it in an amp. But if that's the case the problem is probably not your gear, just your guitarist.

Well it sounds like a major drop in signal with the X-Amp, have you compared the signal output by making a closed loop (you send you reamped signal back to your interface). I have had the ProRMP which is another reamp box by Radial and the output was shit. Even cranked, it was impossible to get the right output, it was always too low. I have seen switched to a Palmer Daccapo and I have no problem anymore.

The X-Amp has a very low input impedance - 600 Ohm. This does not play well at all with the impedance output on many enthusiast-level audio interfaces and even some of the higher end ones. For instance, the output impedance on the RME Babyface Pro is 300 Ohm. To drive the X-Amp properly it should have been 60 Ohm. This is likely the reason why the X-Amp loses in these tests.

You are high. They still make the JCM 2000 to this day. It's a fantastic amp and to this day I still want one. The only issue is the new version of it has digital reverb instead of the spring it used to have. So I'd want an older version. That being said people didn't like the spring reverb as they tend to break with age and it costs a lot to repair/replace them.
The illusion that they don't sell well comes from the fact that people hated the 900 and so it flooded the second had market and everyone picked up cheap 900's instead of buying a new 2000. Not really an issue but that's why it would look that way. It also had to compete with the new rectifiers and 5150's when in the 80's marshall dominated the market.

    • @whiskerbiscuit6674

If you are reamping just use your Daw to loop. The looper pedal is good if you want to compare tones live on camera so people can see you visible affecting the tone. If you are doing it on your own there is no need for the pedal as you can loop the track in your daw.

    • @petougao

Loopers are made for performance. They tend to compress and (Boss) degrade the recorded material as it is mostly intended to be played over, which masks the lo-fi DAC and low audio bitrate used.

Would the fact that I'd be re-amp using the same head have any detrimental effect ?

Depends on if your Trace head DI has cab sim or not and if you are running flat eq or not etc. If you are going to use the trace to DI I'd run all the eq flat and if it has a parametric eq bypass I'd bypass it. Get your track recorded that way. Then set your amp back to the setting you had them then reamp it that way. Otherwise you are double eqing it and then will be un eqing in your Daw. So I'd run the samson DI into your Daw then reamp into your trace. Most amp DI's are eq'd and have sansamp type circuits as they are designed to DI to front of house mixer, not so much recording.

So without the thousands of pieces of specialized audio junk, you can purchase today. We never had such stuff. We created everything in analog. Today you reap the benefits. With digital and hardware recreations. As simple as getting a combo meal from McDonald's. You don't have to order the burger and fries and the soft drink, separately. It comes as a package called a combo DI re-amp, kids meal. And includes a free toy. You can't choke on. No matter how hard you try. As you really won't choke with a watercolor tattoo stamp you stick on your tongue. I've been trying to find one with an RCA 77 DX microphone. None to date. Just little doodles. So I'm bummed. No artificial watercolor tattoos of RCA 77 DX microphones. So I'll just have to get a real tattoo one day. When I'm old enough to after 65. And I need to revisit my childhood I never had as a recording engineer. As I've been doing this since I was 15 years old professionally. That was 50 years ago. And you pick up a few things along the way. Before UA-cam and the Internet ever existed.
So, George Massenburg, Bruce Swedien, Bob Clearmountain, myself and others. We were taught that's where you plug in the microphone. The rest was up to us. And we did it all in analog. How's that possible? You make it possible. Variable speed devices for your analog tape recorders. $30 battery-operated cassette recorders. Sony and Pioneer consumer cassette decks. With built-in limiters you can switch on or off. 5 band octave wide consumer graphic equalizers for $50.. And they can work amazingly well. No matter how awful they sound.
Then you tear out the 1 inch diameter computer speaker from an old broken computer. You tape that to a paper towel cardboard tube. And you put a microphone in the other end and tape that closed. And give that a listen. And it will be like what the FUCK? Why didn't I think of this before? You can also do that with a garden hose. And create an analog, delay line. UREI produced the same thing years ago. Before we had digital delays. Use a garden hose. It'll sound funky.
Or like Sylvia does. Just lay the garden hose around the drum set. And put a 57 into each end. And tape it closed. Add in the bass drum and snare drum microphones. And it's a holy shit moment. Yes it is.
So it doesn't matter what you do or what you have. You use what you have. You make it work for you. You create sounds with it. Accuracy is not a factor here. Fun is. You have fun creating a musical audible work of musical art. And there is no right. There is no wrong. It's art. Some people will love it. Others will despise it. And the trick here is getting more to love it. Of what you have done and the way you have gone about doing. And that's what people are hearing. That is what they are listening for. They are listening to make you make them feel good. It's not about the accuracy or, technical gobbledygook gizmos you have to plug in. You merely have to learn how to pull a rabbit. Out of your ass. Without getting that cute little white bunny all brown and stinky sounding full of shit sound. You need to pull a cute little white fuzzy bunny out of your ass. That still cute white and adorable. And that doesn't smell bad. So you have to watch the pizza and Chinese food you eat. Otherwise you could kill that bunny and have a stillbirth bunny, out of your ass. And everyone will know you are a shit recording engineer and mixer. And your bunnies all look like and sound like shit. We don't like shit bunnies. We like cute and fun sounding bunnies. You know that cute little sound when they wiggle their nose. And not when they are hitting the ejection seat to quickly exit your ass.

Reamp is for when you want to take any recorded signal and and run it through any other connection. You can use it for amps, but if you can reamp just pedals if you want. You can record your DI signal into your unit and then send it out through each pedal independently if you want. It's just a line level converter. It does the opposite of a DI box. or both at the same time. DI converts your unbalanced guitar signal to be balanced signal, reamp takes balanced mixer signal to be an unbalanced guitar level. Although if the pic I'm looking at is correct for your Tascam then your output is unbalanced already and don't need a reamp box. Just mute all the tracks except for the dry and run the Dry guitar signal out of the fx send into your amp and record the cab that way. You also don't need a Di if I'm looking at the correct model as your unit has a dedicated guitar input. Just make sure the switch is set to guitar on the H input. If your unit only had balanced outputs (the monitor out) then you can use a reamp box to take that balanced signal and make it unbalanced for your amp. But it looks as though your unit is both DI and Reamp. The manual should cover reamping.
Alternatively you can also use your monitor out to re amp through any hardware you have for mixing mastering. So you can run the output through a line level compressor or any outboard rack unit and then back into your inputs line level. Just make sure you aren't panning the out channel to the other output otherwise you'll get no signal. Ie don't pan left in your daw and then use the Right send plug
