  • How it works and what do you need to do the aforementioned with Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 audio interface with Logic Pro X. The same principles applies basically to other audio interfaces & DAWs as well. Hope you find this informative and useful.
The original footage of the EV intro clip was shot by Dennis Henson and KJ Melgoza. Thanks guys!

Thanks! Glad to hear! You can't since the whole idea of a re-amp box is that it changes the LINE LEVEL signal, what comes out from your DAW, to INSTRUMENT LEVEL signal that guitar amps are designed to get. If you feed a line level signal into a guitar amp it will sound horrible and in the worst case you could end up blowing the pre-amp tubes etc. so I wouldn't even try that :-).

Hey there! Nice video, but my problem is a little different. I'm running my recorded DI signal through the Radial reamp box into my amp and trying to mic the cab instead of running it back direct into the Focusrite. Every time I do, I get a feedback loop through my mics (Reaper is my DAW). I've tried turning off monitoring on my armed track to avoid a feedback loop and the problem continues. I've also tried to change the output settings in the Focusrite Control software with no luck. What would you recommend?
EDIT: I should also mention that I'm running my two mics through a ART Digital MPA II Preamp before going into the Focusrite. Not sure if that makes a difference and I've messed with the settings on that as well and there is still feedback.

Hi from Detroit ! I have a question. I am buying this Focusrite you show here but did not show my exact recording situation. I play bass and my setup goes like this ..... Active Bass ---> Pedal Board --> Trace Elliot AMP with DI out on it.
My amp is "Trace Elliot GP7 SM BASS PREAMP 300" and the DI out is part of the amp. My question is... How do I connect this to the Focurite? Do I just get a Female XLR for the amps DI and convert to 1/4" plug to go to the Focusrite? Or do I do XLR to XLR ? Im thinking the XLR on the Focusrite is for Microphones only? Im confused about the Focusrite XLR connection. Thanks for reading.
EDIT : After Further research I found my answer but I will leave my question up there for others. In my situation I do this.....

If you want to record the amp and DI simultaneously you’ll need a DI box to split the signal to the amp and to the audio interface 👍😊.
For re-amping you need a re-amp box which transforms the output signal from the audio interface to instrument (guitar) level signal for the amp.

No: DI Box (passive or active) changes instrument level signal to mic level signal and Reamp box changes line level signal to instrument level signal. • @tommj4365

You can use a passive DI box to reamp. Do this by using it in reverse. The output of your interface goes into the output of your DI, then the input of the DI goes into the input of your guitar rig. You will need to adjust the levels so you don't overload the DI box or get a lot of noise. It will probably take a few attempts or tweaks to dial things in so the signal matches up. This was the common way of reamping in studios waaaayyyyy before "reamp" boxes started to become popular. These newer dedicated reamp box offers a few beginner friendly features which handdle the volume/impedance issues, but otherwise they are essentially a DI box in reverse

Great video! I was wondering though, it is still a little confusing for me. I am using a Behringer UMC22 for my recordings, I usually hook up my SM57 microphone to my Behringer and put it against my amp and play directly. So you showed two Radial products this video and I only want to buy a single one because I don't have a lot of money. |
My goal is to be able to record a DI signal directly while also recording the amp via the mic live, then with the DI signal to be able to re-amp for better tone. Will the Radial J48 suffice for this, or do I need the Radial JCR REAMP instead?
My behringer UMC22 only has 1 XLR input, 1 Jack input and two Jack Outputs.

You need a DI box for recording: splits the signal to audio interface (from instrument level to microphone level signal )and the other to the amp (keeps the signal as instrument level signal)
You need a Re-amp box for re-amping (changes the line level signal from DAW to instrument level signal for the amp). Amplifier can’t take a line level signal from DAW ’cos amps are designed to receive only instrument level signal so that’s why we need a re-amp box.

It’s been a while since I did this video and can’t remember the details but in general Inst input is for instrument level signals (guitar, bass) and line level is for line level signals (reactive load, keyboards etc.) 👌. And mic is for microphone level signals from…well that’s pretty obvious 😁. I’m pretty sure no signal was coming directly from the amp to the interface ’cos that would have fried / blown the amp and definitely the interface. 100 watt tube amp puts out quite a lot of electricity and always needs a load (cabinet or reactive load) or it will blow up.

1.- If you want only the DI, just plug the guitar in Focusrite using instrument mode and if you want to hear not the DI while you play, use some plugin in your daw with low latency like Ignite
2.- If you want to reamp with focusrite, plug the guitar direct to input 1 and set output 1exclusive to input 1, then plug the cable from output 1 to amp and the cable from the amp mic back to input 2. In your DAW you can record both. Don´t needed reamp box.

For instance, if you ride your volume pot throughout the song, playing cleans with the volume on 2-3 and rhythm on 7-9 (like you would playing live), the dynamics of the DI range from -50 to -5. When reamping this signal through all the gear, the noise floor rises way too high.
Is it not possible to reamp a guitar take with dynamics and gain controlled from the guitar the old school way?

DI box changes instrument level signal to microphone level signal and when you’re re-amping a signal from your DAW (which is line level signal - audio interface - AD/DA conversion an so on) it needs to be converted into instrument level signal for the amp so you need a device which does that and that device is a re-amp box 👌.
