    • @xaenon
      @xaenon 7 років тому +13

+Roger Densley Why? Because it's the best KIND of movie. You get to switch off your brain and just enjoy it. The first words you see, and the last words you see before the credits roll, tell you all you need to know.
'ONCE UPON A TIME' and '... AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER.'
You get to be a kid again, hearing a fairy tale. With fantastic music, relatable characters, and a larger-than-life adventure, with messages of courage and hope and love, even in the face of futility.
We need MORE movies like this.

Roger, the song doesn't make a lot of sense until you lose someone that can never be replaced, someone who means more than your life. Then the lyrics with the music make sense...at least to me.

The first mistake is questioning it. DON'T. It is a simple tune, beautiful, well written and brilliantly performed. It obviously speaks to your soul, of loneliness and separation and hope that you will soon be reunited with one you truly love.
I know, that sounds really sappy. I don't care. And neither should you. Don't ask why you enjoy it, just accept and appreciate that you DO.

@@xaenon I love your response to Charles. Music and emotion are sometimes inexplicably intertwined. When I was a music major (back in the early 1980s!!), I quickly tired of courses involving music analysis, music theory, and the like. I just wanted to play and feel the music's passion (I studied piano for 11 years and still play, although I'm a little rusty). I cried at several points during this movie, and the accompanying music of these scenes definitely played a part. When Joe starts to waken as they're floating on the luggage in the middle of the ocean (Meg Ryan is still sleeping), and he views the moonrise (it was visually stunning), we hear more beautiful music as Joe struggles to his feet, and says, "Thank you. Thank you God, for my life. I'd forgotten . . how BIG. . ." I can also appreciate what mitter11 wrote on here, about there being two kinds of people in the world, those who get this movie and those who don't. It will always be one of my top favorites of Tom Hanks' movies, yet it barely had an impact when if first came out in theaters in 1990. Also, I've been trying to find the sheet music for "Marooned Without You" but it would have to be for the piano. I've had a little luck just playing some of it by ear.

@@lisa_vincent1243 You get it, you really do! The movie bombed in the theaters, and I think it was because the audience missed the most important AND SIGNFICANT clue about how to interpret the movie.
      What clue, you ask....?
In the beginning of the flick...
ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS A GUY NAMED JOE...."
And just before the end credits roll...
.... AND THEY LIVED HAPPILY EVER AFTER.
Where have we heard this before? We heard these lines as children, when our parents were telling us a bedtime story.
We were being invited to sit, wide-eyed as we did as children, and listen to a bedtime story. The film made no pretense at being 'realistic'.
I can't believe so many people missed that, or were just too tightly wrapped to appreciate it.
The film was GENIUS. I could go on, but I feel I'd just be reciting what you already know.
And the soundtrack was brilliant as well. "Good Lovin' by the Lovin' Spoonful, 'Mas que Nada' by Brasil 66, and 'Ol' Man River' by Ray Charles. And even the original music, just beautiful.
The perfect popcorn flick for the whole family. Everyone can enjoy it, even if just for the visuals and music.

@@denniskorn9003 I got married two years ago, at 58. I was never married before, and had pretty much accepted that I never would. Then I became acquainted with someone who I'd crossed paths with over 20 years ago. We started dating. But I was still trying to get over someone who rejected me (repeatedly), and I was trying to figure out WHY I still was attracted to him! So I had a hard time being open to anyone, even though I knew from the beginning that Joe (who I married) would not hurt me the way other men had. Sometimes I question why I got married at this later stage in life. I love Joe but it wasn't this immediate attraction like I had felt so many times before. However, most of those relationships, semi-relationships, etc. didn't last long. I'm not sure why I am writing all of this. But all KINDS of relationships are possible no matter how old one is, or what our life is like. I just feel like there are always possibilities. . Best wishes to you, Dennis! (I'm pretty tired right now so I hope some of this makes sense. .)

The fact that John Patrick Shanley wrote this song (and the cute ukulele Cowboy Song) for his own movie he also wrote and directed is just too awesome. Shanley was a troubled kid who grew up in a rough Bronx neighborhood and was kicked out of several primary schools, before graduating from NYU valedictorian, then winning a Pulitzer for Doubt, which he wrote, then later adapted for the screen and directed. Immensely talented man who touched a lot of hearts with this movie and song.

I have always been susceptible to movies with good musical scores that support similarly well written storylines. I watched Joe versus the Volcano after I had had seen Sleepless in Seattle and was comfortable with the pairing of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, who was a revelation in this film. Supported by the excellent portrayals of Joe's boss, the Chauffeur, the suitcase salesman and the peerless Lloyd Bridges what at first seemed to be a Dreamworks flight of fancy turned out to be a gem that should have a place in everyone's home movie collections. Why Is My Heart Marooned Without You has to be one of the most romantic themes ever written for the screen.

I felt this way the first time I heard it in 1991 and the end of the movie on HBO on TV. Maybe the vocal harmonies remind me of music from a old classic Disney film I heard on a record as a small child in the early 1960's, or even a baby lullaby record. Or maybe it just reminds me of the world when I was a kid when you had no worries all was safe, and Dad and Mom and your Grandparents were there to protect you. It so beautiful, I'll say it again.
