This animation shows the paths of fetal circulation and then the paths of neonatal circulation. It begins with a view of the mother with the womb and fetus visible. The view shifts to an anterior view of the fetus, umbilical cord and placenta. The fetus is replaced by simple art of the lungs, heart and major vessels to describe fetal circulation. Oxygen rich blood is shown flowing through the umbilical cord to the heart, where it is directed toward the brain. Oxygen rich and poor blood mix. Oxygen poor blood returns to the placenta. The umbilical cord is cut. Simple art of the heart and vessels shows the anatomical changes - the closure of the foramen ovale and the ductus arteriosis. The paths of neonatal circulation is shown, with the oxygen rich and poor blood kept separate.
