To help you ace an audition for clarinet or any instrument you can play expressively. For example when the notes are going higher make sure to crescendo. If they're going lower decrescendo. Do this if its a solo audition. Even if it doesn't show those dynamics still do it. It helps you be expressive and show that you are FEELING the music. This also helps in college auditions because it shows your passion for music.
These videos are perfect for beginners, because if you have been playing for awhile this stuff is completely all basics of the clarinet. As you progress there is less things that can be explained in a 13 minute video because you will start to develop your own preferences like which mouthpiece, ligature, and reed combo you use. Ex: Some people prefer Vandoren Traditional over the V12 or the other way around. (look up those reeds if you don't know what I am typing about.) So it is highly recommended that you find a private teacher. Private teachers cost about $60 an hour but its completely worth it. They teach you everything you need to know and know almost everything because they are usually professional. (ex: how to correct/adjust your reeds, alternate fingerings for notes.) Ask other good clarinet players you know to see who teaches them and contact their teachers, or ask your conductor for some names. And I don't mean to be rude, but it would help clarinet players more if you could upload videos of etudes or concertos that students could emulate your sound and tone quality. These songs are popular, but they don't teach you the essentials to become a better musician. Personally I think that these videos are overrated: she needs to work more on her tone quality and articulation. To be honest there is given too much credit given to you: I know high school students that play 10 times better and you are already in college no offense. But that is my own opinion. I commend you for your creativity and amazing ability to play songs by ear and figure out the notes. (this is from a freshman in high school who has been playing since 4th grade and is currently studying with a private teacher and coincidentally uses the same ligature, mouthpiece brand, and reed brand as the person in this video, but then again Vandoren RULES XD.)
Thank you very much for all the tips!!!! Very helpful!!! I am a 7th grade clarinet player (2n year) and I love to do your covers for fun!!! I am also trying out for honor band this year and the tips you gave are very very helpful!!!
Honor Bands take the best musicians in your district, state, region, or even country and combine you together in one big ensemble. It is a super fantastic experience and you should look to see if your state offers any type of honor band. If you live in the Northwest I would try for WIBC (Western International Band Clinic). It takes place in november and the audition material has stayed the same for years. I believe auditions are due by October 12th. It takes place at the Double Tree Hotel in Seattle Washington. While you might have to get a flight there if you live farther out in the midwest or east coast the Honor band has four different bands you can get into. And they accept a lot of kids. So look into it and ask your parents. Hope I helped
I'm in 6th grade and I just started playing the clarinet how long would u keep your reed and do you use plastic reeds because my band director does and I don't like having to suck on the wooden reeds
Thank you so much that was helpful! I know the chromatic scale but I don't know what the other twelve scales are that you were talking about ! Maybe that's not a very good thing because I have been playing the clarinet for two years. I would appreciate if you explain what those scales are that you explained in this video! Thank you so much for the video I love watching your videos!
Can you talk about Eb clarinet too? And what are your thoughts about voicing in extreme altissimo registers? What are your tips for achieving solid interval relations at 440, and furthermore how to adjust those interval relations in ensemble work adjustment? What about your method book? Do you study out of Bearmann or Klosé? What kind of Rees working format do you prefer? You're like amazing, I need to absorb your knowledge.
You should definitely do circle of fifths tutorial! Thanks for sharing all the tips I'm on my fourth year playing and some of these tips will still help! You are the kinda person I want to become thanks for inspiring me!
I really love your channel and thank you for the tips! I am starting the clarinet.. And I played the recorder before so maybe it can help me.. And again thank you so much! :)
I’ve been playing the tenor sax for about six months and I’ve been having SO MUCH fun with it and my teacher told me that I was over practicing and I starting to tire out my embouchure and it was starting to be counterproductive. Have you ever over practice at times without even realizing it?
Im so happy i sucked at the flute cause if i didnt then i would never have never swiched to clarinet make honor band and never never ever ever seen your inspiring videos!!!! :D
hi just learn clarniet i know about 7 note now on top !!!! hope get better is there any tip u can tell how get better and how to understand note get better at it i still learn how learn music it still hard for me !!!
I disagree, I believe judges look more for the content that you have been taking the time to work on (especially scales) rather than sight reading something that is handed to you and have 30 seconds to a minute to try and do a great job on. Sight reading is just there to see how well your ability to read music is. Here is a tip: When sight reading THE NOTES DO NOT MATTER. as long as you keep the tempo and rhythm going and don't stop, you will do just fine! I never had to do sight reading in high school but I guess every school is different! :) -Ana
i heard clarinet was hard i tried it and i"m a breeze! it so easy i guess i"m a natural at playing the clarinet! And you should continue your videos there GREAT!!!
Flute and clarinet are kinda the same flute just sounds a little higher! My sister plus the flute! So if you play the clarinet the flute won't be that different
I played flute for a while and then started playing clarinet. It was a little confusing because the fingerings aren't (totally) the same, but other than that, the flute is pretty easy.
Scales are important but never more so than your actual audition piece. It's fine and dandy if you can play all of your scales up and down at 160bpm but if you can't perform a simple étude then judges will want nothing to do with you. *spoiler* You don't perform scales at concerts
I've known people who go all through middle school writing in note names then when high school happens they drop out because I make them not write in note names. (I'm clarinet section leader) I've also done kiddie camp (6th grade band camp) for the past 2 years and have taught all the clarinets to NEVER do it. I think I got my message across too.

When auditioning for honor band, sight reading is more important than scales.
It really just depends on what honor band. Some don't even have a sight reading part
I disagree, I believe judges look more for the content that you have been taking the time to work on (especially scales) rather than sight reading something that is handed to you and have 30 seconds to a minute to try and do a great job on. We aren't allowed to have water in our band unless you have enough for the entire band
Scales are important but never more so than your actual audition piece. It's fine and dandy if you can play all of your scales up and down at 160bpm but if you can't perform a simple étude then judges will want nothing to do with you. *spoiler* You don't perform scales at concerts
