When I was 11 and had first bought this game, I barely understood any of the mechanics. I had joined an RP server and didn’t know what it meant. I made a night elf but someone in passing had told me Stormwind was where all the action happened. After asking everyone I saw how to get to Stormwind, and being shown a boat or two by a helpful fellow, I arrived at Menethil Harbor... at level 7. I took about three steps out of the gate before getting butchered. Another way underleveled human came over who was RP’ing a grizzled warrior with a thick Scottish accent, and who offered to be my guide. But he was only around level 14. Cue a couple of hours of us ranging through the wetlands to get to the southern pass, frightfully sprinting past Orc raiders in the mountains, and finally, at last, making it to Dun Morogh. As an idiotic 11 year old who barely knew how to move, I don’t think I ever would have made it if not for that fellow. I don’t remember his name or really anything about him other than that he guided me and that he gave me a Soldier’s Cloak, the first cloak I ever got in WoW. I thought that was SO cool back then, I was ecstatic. Wherever that guy is, I hope he’s doing well.
I remember those undead sailors on those ships just northwest of town. During fighting they would cast a curse onto ya turning you into an undead. Classic times💖😎
I remember telling my friend to take his Nightelf to Stormwind/Ironforge because thats where everyone was. After the infamous Crocolisk run and many deaths, he made it to Stormwind. Leveled up a bit, and then found out that he had to go all the way back to Nightelf Land to learn how to tame pets. Heh.
nothing wrong with the Darkshore and Ashenvale quests imo. then the valey wich leads to Desolace. only quest I need to go to Stormwind is druid swim form quest. and there i have druid travel form no croco run.
Wetlands isn't pretty, but the ambience has such an interesting feel to it that the zone stands out as unique. My favorite WoW memory was when I was 13, and it was just a day I woke up in the middle of summer and resumed my grinding in the Wetlands, no responsibilities and totally at peace with the world. That was 11 years ago
I was 13 and questing in Wetlands as well, but it was 20 years ago for me haha. Pure magic back then. Glad more than just my generation got to experience the magic. I still come back to this zone and just remember all the good times and friends I never got to meet IRL from back then. What a privilege.
Wetlands will always be one of my favorites zones because of how dangerous it was to cross it to get to Ironforge and Stormwind and the journey of taking it for the first time was so cool to me as a kid
Professions never meant enough in WoW... And they were always a pain in the ass (hence the countless hours) before they meant that something. Except for engineering, maybe.
Used to disappear for hours in the Wetlands just trying to figure out where things were for quests. After a while of questing or wandering around I remember I used to feel like my character was fatigued and lost. Pop my Hearthstone back to the inn and try asking any other players id find where things were @ the inn or by the mail box cuz I was scared of being out there alone and surrounded by NPC's lol. The countless skeletons of lowbies making the run to Ironforge along the path def added a wary atmosphere since I didnt know those were player corpses. What a time when ur 11
12 years ago, level 15 or 16 human paladin, clueless about the game.I get that long chain quest about first blue two hand hammer (it required Deadmines run, few mobs and also a run in pre Cata Shadowfang keep). Spent like an hour studying the map and how I can get to Hillsbrad Foothills and then proceed to the keep in Silverpine Forest. Decided it was best to run manually, so I went tunnel ride to Ironforge, walk through Dun Morogh, and I discovered Wetlands. It was frightening and I kept running to the Menethil harbor thinking it is protected by Arthas Menethil. Seeing it wasn't, went by the shore and got zapped by some pirates. Finally somehow made it to the bridge crossing to Arathi Highlands and immediately eaten by raptors and died at least 10 times until I made it to the gates of Hillsbrad. In Hillsbrad went offroad and killed by ?? lvl undead guards. Took me literally half of day to find and walk to the Shadowfang keep. Best days ever, I wouldn't say of my life because I want to stay positive, but most careless and tension free days of my life. Get up early, go to high school, come back and play WoW until past midnight. No work, no bills, no rent , no fucking coorporate bullshit, meetings, managers, deadlines and every other prick in this life. Just peace and discovering the unknown....
You wanted that Hammer so badly, you went with level 16 through level 25+ zone? You are one of the brave Heroes we lost against 10 level above you mob. Castle Shadowfang also is 28+ iirc. you should have waited. be patient young Padawan.
I remember as a level 1 night elf running all the way to Elwynn and wondering why I couldn’t do the northshire abbey quests so I just farmed a level on defies cut purses outside of gold shore and happily continued on to goldshire. When you’re 12, something that only takes about 40 mins feels like a whole adventure. I felt like I was such a pioneer and that people would be like: wow there’s a night elf leveling here, that’s impressive!
OMG I felt the same way. I always loved the pandaren and that was one of my first characters. After I travelled with Aysa to Stormwind, I went to Goldshire and tried to impress people by dressing as an NPC monk and fighting. Yk the ones with only a belt. I died shortly after because I didn’t transmogrify, but boy oh boy I felt so brave taking on a high level player with my bare fists 😂
I was a horde main in vanilla and throughout the rest of retail. Decided to try Alliance for a change for classice, Nelf Hunter, and oh my. Something about zones from vanilla - WOTLK are amazing. I think the massive difference between Vanilla and Retail development is that, Vanilla devs worked on making a beautiful world that felt surreal and yet also very humble. They cared about making a real RPG world. Retail development is just focused on selling just about anything they can. Mounts, Pets, cosmetics, toys, utilities etc. The world itself is just a bit of a side project. So many memories levelling in this zone in *CLASSIC*, the people I talked to, and the friend I made levelling. I don't remember jack about current retail.
This statement is just wrong... We can argue a lot about gameplay decisions, expansions pacing, class balance and how the game changed from a game you could play once or twice a week to keep up into somehting, forcing you to log in daily for at least an hour, which more or less happend with the Release of Legion. But if there are 2 things were Blizzard has stepped up their game EVERY single expansion, its zone design and soundtrack. Like at least 50% of the Pre-Cata zones were boring and kinda empty, garbage design with lots of copy paste. They had close to no pacing, but hour long runs after dying, cause even the biggest zones, like STV, Western PL or Winterspring had sometimes only 2 graveyards. Quest lines were often non existent, and especially after level 40, it was more a grind, than serious leveling by doing quests, cause many of the later zones just had no consistent way of following quests. This all changed with WOTLK and more so with Cataclysm, when they finally made 90% of the vanilla zones feasible for leveling and gave them a basic story you cared about. Dont mistake those sweet memories of Classic/Vanilla for somehting born out of quality, but out of nostalgia and need. Back then the game was fresh, nobody knew shit and everybody just played, gave a damn about optimization. That did not change mainly because the game changed, but because the community grew and changed the longer they played.
@@MrVaeron I think you're talking about QUEST design. Yoland mentioned about the zones and how surreal they are. I remember cutting through the wetlands from Teldrassil to get to IF then subsequently SW via tram. That was such an adventure.. took like an hour. Then it was fun seeing humans surprised to see a night elf in elwynn forest. Such good times.
I loved Wetlands! This is where I got my first PvP kill. I was so excited chasing a blood elf down while spamming MoonFire watch her health go down until she died. For a second I felt like a true Alliance lol.
Installed it again. Its not the game it was 15 years ago but the first levels 1-20 with the old zones, the music and just the overall feeling are still there.
I remember wanting to get to Darnassus at level 14 as a kid, somehow my ass was smart enough to swim all the way from Westfall to Menethil... but I also thought that Paladin was more fun than mage because I didn't have to stop to drink. Strange times.
Currently listening to this on loop as I work on my graduate coursework studying wetlands. Who would have thought that my first introduction to wetlands in vanilla WoW so many years ago would resonate so much with me! #GatorNation...or should that be #CrocoliskNation :)
Thank you for this video. This was the first zone that really got me hooked into WoW back in late 2007. I still have fond memories of leveling my Night Elf Hunter there. I'm not surprised to see that the zone has kept her charm regardless of the years passed.
You've gained a subscriber. High quality vids and sound, good approach doing it from the nostalgia perspective by focusing the zones as they were in Vanilla, good choice making some of them long. Keep'em coming. One thing, I am surprised to hear the forest music from Darkshore in this video. I contend that I have roamed through the Wetlands quite a lot in Vanilla and I can't recall where that was played.
Hi there :) Thank you for subscribing and for the feedback. I hope to receive more feedback from you - since my purpose with this channel is to improve and get the best videos, to capture WoW as it is (on these music & ambience videos at least. There are some 'concept' videos, usually just ambience, where I play more with the images and sound). To answer your statement, the "Night Forest" track from Darkshore is played on Menethil Harbor only in Wetlands. This is why, on the 3 hours video you will hear it only once. I know it is 'out of place' but I am trying to stick with what was in Vanilla. During my 4 months now since I have started making these videos I have discovered more examples like that and I was for a long time undecided what to do in this case: to present it as it was or just play the dedicated theme for the entire period (basically make an extended music played on an ambience movie). Here is the proof: ua-cam.com/video/ZSqK55CVldE/v-deo.html (excuse the quality, this is an unlisted video, just for demo). I was in the game, capturing another zone and I have decided to double check :) Your kind words and feedback are much appreciated, I hope I will talk to you soon, Kind regards, Meisio
Meisio No way. You legit got me puzzled here. I've literally spent ages in Menethil and never noticed. Some of my HL chars even had their HS there back in the days as it was a good midway point between Blackrock Mountain/IF/Plaguelands - but also because I liked the place, its destruction ranks high in my list of Cataclysm grudges :) I am tempted to triple check with some character on a Vanilla realm. Could it be because I was so used to the place that I didn't pay attention? Or perhaps it is being busy with other things in town? Anyway, fun stuff. Also the theme inside the Menethil stronghold was the jungle one iirc.
I had your reaction in other areas in WoW. It took me over 10 years to realize that in some zone the music is not what I was expecting :) Regarding the stronghold music, you are right, it is "Jungle" - talking about unexpected tracks. I have decided not to include it in the first minutes because I was about to play it on "The Lost Fleet" area and I thought it's too much. But the video execution is not perfect anyway and I will probably revisit it after some time. Not now, but at some point :)
Straight up best zone in the game ever. Will never forget the memories from wetlands throughout all my time playing. thank you for uploading this video
These are great, thank you for putting all the effort into making and sharing these! Wetlands used to be my favorite zone in vanilla, so it's good to be able to revisit that in some way :)
You are welcome. I am glad someone notices the effort :) For me Wetlands was the first zone where I have encounter the other faction members. I was back then a night elf and here it was the first time I saw an Undead. I was curious but also a bit scared as it was a PVP server :)
For me it was a scary but intriguing zone as well!. As a lvl 10 night elf I asked a human in Darnassus how to get to his capital Stormwind, and he walked me all the way through the Wetlands to Ironforge and Stormwind. It was super scary to see level '??' crocolisks and raptors chasing me, hahaha. When I got to lvl 20 I just had to explore it all.
Wetlands. The ultimate test for all my level 10 Alliance characters. Running to Menethil, then back up through Dun Modr to gather the flight paths to South Shore with a trail of spiders, gnolls, raptors and crocolisks chasing.
😂 back in the days when I pulled half the bloody swamp. the sound of the murloc’s battle cry! Trying desperately to get away across the rivers, pulling crocs as well, the sound of spears hitting me, then being trapped and mauled alive by the crocs, so many corps runs 😂
Oh wow! Thank you for the vote of confidence :) I am doing all my best to deliver the best Vanilla experience as possible. I admit it is a learning experience for me and I believe that the newer videos are better in terms of execution / editing. Some of the oldest videos are already scheduled to be remade, but I will do them after I complete all Vanilla Azeroth (e.g.: I want to capture the Night Elf zones in 4K too). By the way, welcome to the channel and thank you for subscribing. I am very grateful that more people are joining and enjoying my videos. I hope to build a community where you guys have a voice and decide on what's coming. Kind regards, Meisio
Thank-you Meisio for all of these wonderful WoW Music & Ambience videos. Been playing since Vanilla, and it's nostalgia overload, so many feels. Also, seeing the Wetlands zone, it reminds me of how much I hate the post-Cata Azeroth. So many of my favourite zones ruined.. Wetlands, Loch Modan, Ashenvale, Barrens, Darkshore, Thousand Needles, Tanaris.. : (
At least Wetlands are still wet lands, which cannot be said about Thousand Needles. I mean, in a sense it still is, and it is a great idea, but the original is gone. Until Classic I guess.
Yeah, TBC didn't capture that, and I started playing during TBC, so it wasn't like I had been playing vanilla 2 years and the game had lost it's magic. Outland was really cool for a brief moment when you step through the portal and demons were laying siege, but as soon as you landed in HH/Thrallmar it was "meh" at best. Northrend was a big improvement, but then Cata ruined everything lol.
soggy place 2, omg i used to go farm in dustwallow marsh and wetlands when i was a low level hunter just so i could hear this music lol was such a noob would literally sit and farm level 35+ mobs for hours at a time hoping for an epic drop not understanding how rare world drops were, and then the emerald drake in swamp of sorrows freaking AGESSSSSSSSSSSS lol ahhhh i loved this game so much, farming the mobs in felwood for cloth drops and praying for like a hammer of northern wind or staff or jordan to make a life-changing amount of gold
The themes in Vanilla were commonly used across various zones. Example: Night Forest - played in Menethil Harbor, Darkshore, Moonglade and Silverpine Forest (Human areas) Soggy Place - all swamps / humid areas: Wetlands, Dustwallow Marsh, Un'Goro, Swamps of Sorrows. Salutations! :)
The Wetlands are F___ING RUINED now.... 😑 I remember the Teldrassil to Stormwind run. From Menethil Harbor to Dun Morough being the hardest deathrun ever. LoL!!
Some guy on our server held a race once, people were to make level 1 gnomes and race to Light's Hope. There was like 100 of us lol and of course the enemy faction also knew of the event, so that was by far my hardest death run. I got 2nd place though, 3k gold for it, which was a good amount in TBC.
Man on a private server wetlands was one of the best places for Oily Blackmouths (contrary to real vanilla where I'd say its Barrens>Darkshore>Westfall). My tour was always wetlands get the gravemoss etc, I made so much G between lvl 20-40 here. And I was horde. (why do ally get the low level gravemoss nodes?!?!) But hey it doesnt matter cuz blizzard ruined their own classic wow. How sad. Vanilla wow is dead and they created systems that discourage players from putting the time in vanilla over TBC. So everyone just goes to TBC.

Even with all the lofi tracks out there, I always come back to these familiar grounds.
These are great, thank you for putting all the effort into making and sharing these! Wetlands used to be my favorite zone in vanilla, so it's good to be able to revisit that in some way :)
You are welcome. I am glad someone notices the effort :)
For me Wetlands was the first zone where I have encounter the other faction members.
One of my favorite areas in the game! Thank you so much Meisio, I love your videos so much.
Wetlands.
The ultimate test for all my level 10 Alliance characters. Running to Menethil, then back up through Dun Modr to gather the flight paths to South Shore with a trail of spiders, gnolls, raptors and crocolisks chasing.
that was the WOW Olympics!
Travelled to Ironforge through this area as an elf hunter - my very first character in game. Mmm, memories...
I started playing Classic in 2021 and this is already nostalgic
I really love this zone. So much atmosphere and lore.
Awesome work Meisio, It makes me being nostalgic. Keep it up
Gracias Francisco :-)
I don't remember ever questing here for some reason
Because there are no roads and you pull different mobs all the time, easy skip
😂 back in the days when I pulled half the bloody swamp.
the sound of the murloc’s battle cry! Trying desperately to get away across the rivers, pulling crocs as well, the sound of spears hitting me, then being trapped and mauled alive by the crocs, so many corps runs 😂
It sounds like you were having a lot of fun :D
I am still doing that on my 'special' days :)
Meisio 😂👍
Your videos are great, love the vanilla perspective. I will continue to like all of your videos I come across, thanks for posting!
Oh wow! Thank you for the vote of confidence :)
I am doing all my best to deliver the best Vanilla experience as possible.
Kind regards,
Meisio
I love wetland, such a cool place
Paladins worst nightmare leveling zone. Awe the memories with God playing with me. Great times
Just subscribed! I plug in headphones at work and the stress drains away. Thank you for making all these wonderful videos!!
Every zone has special memories to me in vanilla
Yeah, TBC didn't capture that, and I started playing during TBC, so it wasn't like I had been playing vanilla 2 years and the game had lost it's magic. Outland was really cool for a brief moment when you step through the portal and demons were laying siege, but as soon as you landed in HH/Thrallmar it was "meh" at best. Northrend was a big improvement, but then Cata ruined everything lol.
The memories come pour in!!!
Make me miss alot of friends who I made many funny and emotional memories with....at one point I thought it would never end......
3:30 is awesome
Love beat of the war drums I remember so many players gank on my undead rogue
soggy place 2, omg i used to go farm in dustwallow marsh and wetlands when i was a low level hunter just so i could hear this music lol was such a noob would literally sit and farm level 35+ mobs for hours at a time hoping for an epic drop not understanding how rare world drops were, and then the emerald drake in swamp of sorrows freaking AGESSSSSSSSSSSS lol ahhhh i loved this game so much, farming the mobs in felwood for cloth drops and praying for like a hammer of northern wind or staff or jordan to make a life-changing amount of gold
I love to turn in vanilla music and ambience while levelling on live servers, it's sweet =)
Thank you Andrew :)
I play your videos in the background while playing BfA with its music turned off.
I do the same thing.
Is bfa's music bad then? I quit end of legion.
8.0 music is brilliant to be honest. I am not super excited about 8.1 and 8.1.5 music though.
how dare you
Great thing for concentrating on lessons or working, Thank you!
Thank you. Please check out other videos from my channel. I have a lot of them in this style :-)
Kind regards,
Meisio
I remember farming the rapters for their eggs. Being level 20 something and getting 9 silver for a stack of 10 or something...
Another great zone that I very much enjoyed with about every character I had :)
god bless, this is so fucken awesome when ur stoooooooned, best day at the job ty meisio
Stoned at work? :-)
You are welcome!
Meisio
This is very comfy and also really good for studying.
34:58 there it is !
running through as a low level nelf to get to elwyn forest
Yes same
Today i used this video on my D&D session on this location, your channel is treasure for vanilla music atmosphere. Thanks! *Subscribe*
Always great stuff. Thank you for uploading.
Thank you Dahun, likewise :)
came back to give it another listen :)
Welcome back. I've missed you :-)
Thx, loved the atmosphere there.
My pleasure Igor, hope to _see_ you soon :)
maan i wish these tracks were included in the OST of the game.
Grim batol😍
2:41:31, hell yeah
Wonderful game
Say what you want but WoW is most climatic game I've ever seen
Thank you
My pleasure. I am happy I have people watching from Asia ❤
1:58:30 rain :)
Fishing in Menethil Harbour
Sitting in the boat under the dock, fishin' for Firefin Snappers and Oilies...
My alt is the right level to quest in Welands right now in WOW Classic. Omw! :)
WoW felt like magic, because most of us were kids when it came out😅
Well this is fun on a Friday night with nothing on TV do to the virus out brake.
so many crocs and raptors i've killed.....
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Dustwallow Marsh and Swamp of Sorrows use this music as well.
i'm sure i heard this somewhere in kalimdor
The themes in Vanilla were commonly used across various zones.
Example:
Night Forest - played in Menethil Harbor, Darkshore, Moonglade and Silverpine Forest (Human areas)
Soggy Place - all swamps / humid areas: Wetlands, Dustwallow Marsh, Un'Goro, Swamps of Sorrows.
Salutations! :)
lads n gals, it was good fun tho :)
s o g g y p l a c e
The Wetlands are F___ING RUINED now.... 😑 I remember the Teldrassil to Stormwind run. From Menethil Harbor to Dun Morough being the hardest deathrun ever. LoL!!
Some guy on our server held a race once, people were to make level 1 gnomes and race to Light's Hope. There was like 100 of us lol and of course the enemy faction also knew of the event, so that was by far my hardest death run. I got 2nd place though, 3k gold for it, which was a good amount in TBC.
oh i hate this place... the feel of it... jumping off the dam and dying IN CAT FORM... a group of random murlocs appearing out of nowhere...
Where man becomes a woman
Why?)
(why do ally get the low level gravemoss nodes?!?!)
But hey it doesnt matter cuz blizzard ruined their own classic wow. How sad. Vanilla wow is dead and they created systems that discourage players from putting the time in vanilla over TBC. So everyone just goes to TBC.
