Tom and Jerry: A Nutcracker Tale is a 2007 American direct-to-video animated Christmas fantasy comedy film. The film was produced by Warner Bros. Animation and Turner Entertainment Co., and is the first Tom and Jerry film directed by Spike Brandt and Tony Cervone. It serves as the fifth direct-to-video Tom and Jerry film and is a semi-adaptation of 1816 short story "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" by E. T. A. Hoffmann, with Jerry in the role of the Nutcracker and Tom in the role of one of the Mouse King's (who is reimagined as a cat) henchmen.

Yessir! Let's go🎉🎉🎉🎉❤❤❤❤❤
Doug Walker !!! You think you are not MAN enough to review ,,G-force" ? You the one who reviewed ,,SHARK BOY AND LAVAGIRL" (you don't have nuts, no complains) !
I can't wait to see the 1st Reaction video of the Walker guys of this 1.
Also it is ... DAY 72 WAITING FOR THE ,,G-FORCE" MOVIE REVIEW BY THE ,,NOSTALGIA CRITIC" !!!
You never reviewed this? 🤔
God, that poor horse went through a lot in that movie. Unable to speak unless her string is pulled, separated from her friends, forced to betray them because the cats exploited her pull string, DYING at the end.
I love Nelly.
I'm surprised that you remember her name (me included)
I cried at her death and my mom's boyfriend at the time laughed at me
The Nutcracker Tale was one of my all time favorites. Seeing Tom and the other cats line up like soldiers was just such a cool vibe. I remember replaying just that scene over and over as a kid
How did you feel about the Nazi Nightmare Fuel adaption of Nutcracker?
same I loved this movie! totally forgot about it til now
Agree...
This T and J Nutcracker Tale story and animation better than T and J The Movie itself.
But....
T and J The Magic Ring still number 1 for me
It was one of my favorites growing up!
"Ren and Stimpy reference" is more like it 5:34
Fun fact: The ballerina is voiced by Tara Strong, who also played Anna in Care Bears Nutcracker Suite.
Voice acting goddess
Didn't she also play Raven - Teen Titans?
@@TotallyHuman Yup. Some of her other notable voice over roles include Bubbles from the original Powerpuff Girls, Timmy Turner from The Fairly OddParents, Ben Tennyson from Ben 10 (original and reboot), and Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
fact.@@jareththegoblinking3191
Don't forget she is ALSO Miss Minutes in Loki! Tara Strong is an amazing voice actress!
This was one of if not THE LAST Tom and Jerry project that co-creator Joseph Barbera helped out on as he wrote the story and co executive produced
There’s even a sweet little tribute to him during the credits
Glad to find someone who’s aware this is the Last Creation of the Original Creators. Been following Tom & Jerry for 20 Years now.
@@UMvsC3DPFWPW he executed produced every T&J Movie/special before he died (same with Scooby Doo) he also was a Creative Consultant for the theatrical Movie, so it’s pretty cool he was able to keep track of his creation(s) during his last years of living
RIP to William Hanna and Joseph Barbera
He also came up with the story for a what's new Scooby Doo episode and some Tom and Jerry Tales episodes
I think the ending was meant to confirm that the whole movie was intended like a stage performance breaking into reality. The magic world itself is more like stage becoming an entire universe on its own (you can tell it by the various fake backgrounds the characters pass through).
I always liked this movie. There was genuine effort in it and some of the moments were somehow... artsy. The dragon scene for example was completely dialogue free and everything was built on the music, the imagery and the mood. Some of the elements didn't even receive an actual explaination: it was just... suggestive imagery, visual storytelling with moments intended to make the mood and the great Nutcracker music sink in.
Yeah it was still a direct-to-video kids movie with all its tropes and gags and so on, plus it's too short to qualify as a full-lenght feature, but you know what? I wish more animated direct-to-video movies back then had this quality (I was born in 2002 and I was five when this movie came out).
That is a good point that the Toy Story franchise never used the concept of a toy that needs a string to be pulled to talk.
They probably didn't do that because they would have to make Woody follow that rule as well.
That makes sense.
They did have that fisher price phone in Toy Story 3 where someone had to take the phone off of the receiver so that he could talk. And in Toy Story 4, there was a doll with a worn out voice box? I can't remember if she could talk before they got her a new one or fixed her
I loved the fact that the horse couldn't lie when the cord was pulled, it was such a clever rule to me as a child.
I loved watching this every December as a kid and, as far as direct to DVD Tom and Jerry movies go, it's still pretty good. Definitely one of the better ones. The animation matches up with the music pretty well, the songs are good, (I still get the one where the cats are preparing to go after Jerry stuck in my head sometimes,) the slapstick is great, and Joseph Barbera's presence is definitely felt. RIP to a legend.
"King of the Cats" is a pretty good song too.
Joseph really cared about his creation.
@@waterbullstudios9195 He and William definitely did. :)
This is literally one of my favourite Christmas specials the first time I saw it it was a roller coaster of emotions to me. I loved it as a kid and always did.
Same here. One of my favorite Tom and Jerry films
The co-director of this one, Spike Brandt, was integral to a lot of the best Tiny Toons and Animaniacs episodes. He's been posting a lot of artwork from this one on Twitter as of late, it's a decently charming special.
I honestly really love whenever the NC reviews a new Tom and Jerry thing so it's great to see that tradition remain
There's a hell lot of Tom and Jerry movies. Would love to see Doug review more.
Nutcracker with a Tom and Jerry twist.
Sounds painful
And unlike the other Tom and Jerry tastes, this is the only one that worked
@@ejelecflametails6657 💯
I remember watching this christmas special every year on Cartoon Network, I loved it then and I still love it now
I must have two because when the horse showed up so many memories came rushing back
Another Fun Fact: Tara Strong, Ian James Corlett, Kathleen Barr, Mark Oliver, Garry Chalk, Chantal Strand, Richard Newman, and Trevor Devall each later went on to voice characters for My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.
No wonder I love this so much. Nelly was my first favorite pony. ❤
Kathleen Barr also voiced in Barbie in the Nutcracker and The Nutcracker! Of course, Kelly Sheridan was Barbie before Startlight so that’s a fun thing to point out. MLP had some incredibly talented artists!
I do appreciate how this movie utilized Andrea Romano, who always brought her a-game, and talented Canadian voice-over artists. I'd like to see an animated Nutcracker special that effectively integrated the lesser known aspects of E.T.A. Hoffman's story (like The Rat King being a vengeful monster with 7 heads) as well as Tchaikovsky's music.
The reason for the huge Canadian cast is because of Tom and Jerry Tales. Not only to keep the cast consistent from that series, but also the fact that Tony Cervone and Spike Brandt became directors for season 2 right after finishing Duck Dodgers and prior to working at Nick studios on Back at the barnyard. Eventually, those two returned to WB TV animation for future projects T&J/ Scooby doo projects where they're stilling working to this day. 🥰🥰🥰
@@danielgudinojuarez6729most of the cast are from MLP: FIM which makes this even better!
There is a wordless Russian-animated version you can find on UA-cam. It's about half an hour long and incorporates other Tchaikovksy pieces as well.
@@SWDude2710 yeah what’s the voice actors in this went on to be regulars on mlp
@@Nick-ty9us mega cool there.
I'm incredibly excited to see you talk about it -- this was legitimately one of my favorite Christmas movies as a kid.
Grew up with this on Boomerang as a kid. I still love it. And I do recommend The Nutcracker Prince. Outside of the Barbie Nutcracker and this Tom and Jerry Nutcracker, it's my favorite. Decent voice acting and animation. Some odd world-building. But still overall a nice time. ^^
yes!! so glad to see other fans of the nutcracker prince. it's the only adaptation that made me realize how dramatic and out-of-place 'pas de deux' is when compared with the other songs. plus, i love how the rat king started off goofy but then became monstrous and terrifying when clara was all alone. with the world-building, i think the film takes a lot of inspiration from the original short story rather than the ballet, but i get what you mean.
I'd appreciate it if Doug looked at a few of the most popular Barbie movies. Princess and the Pauper is legitimately a good film, Rapunzel would be interesting to compare to the Disney version and Nutcracker does have a legitimately interesting and at the time quite original concept of using motion capture to translate the dance moves of the ballet into the movie. Also, Tim Curry as the rat king.
Big yes to this comment thread. I would love to hear Doug talk about The Nutcracker Prince and/or Barbie’s version: still to this day I feel like these are the only two that deviant from the typical tropes in Nutcracker movies, but unlike Untold Story or Four Realms, it’s done in a respectful way to the original story *and* the ballet. Sure, both have their issues mainly around the limited budget considering what they were made for, but exactly that point shows how much potential those versions have to be the ultimate modern retelling of the story. These two will always have a soft spot in my heart.
The pull sting hoarse and the elf are my favorite companions of Jerry. When the hoarse got he voice I remember smiling like a proud parent as a kid.
I remember watching this in 2007 on Cartoon Network and I'll never forget the first time I heard the famous March of the Toy Soilders by Tchaikovsky. Every time I heard it, this special would pop into my head because it was the only Nutcracker story I knew. Talk about nostalgia.
The Dragon scene from this movie was my favorite by far as it really reminded me of the fantastic Fantasia with it's imagery combined with the music. Even the Fire Sprite taking form from the Dragon's breathe was pretty cool.
Looking forward for Christmas reviews is like a advent calendar. Always full of surprises
This is probably my favorite Tom and Jerry special. I've never seen the actual Nutcracker performance, but if it really is without dialogue, then that automatically plays into their favor. They didn't have to rely completely on the characters talking to carry every scene through, they could offload some of it onto the original's score, which I think brings it back closer to the show than the other specials. The dialogue they added was probably to help follow the story and keep attention for its length, as well as add in a few more jokes. The Tom and Jerry slapstick also flows better with the narrative in this one, whereas in The Wizard of Oz and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, it feels more shoehorned in and fighting for screentime with the established story.
This is my favourite adaptation the Nutcracker next to Disney's because unlike so many others that just use the score for background music, this one actually sets it to creative visuals. I'm sad that Doug didn't mention my favorite scene where they are in a clockmaker's shop with birds popping out of cuckoo clocks set to the Chinese Dance!
This childhood movie will always have a special place in my heart, it was such a good mix of magic, comedy and joy that I always smile whenever I get a chance at watching it
Another Fun Fact: This short is the second adaption of "The Nutcracker" that Kathleen Barr, Ian James Corlett, and Chantel Strand starred in.
Really great to see the NC keep giving us such great content over the year and still finding a way to be as important as ever
I’m amazed he’s able to keep finding enough Christmas movies every December.
I never even heard of this special, but it literally made me laugh by itself several times without jokes from Doug. I need to look this up
Have you considered reviewing 1986’s Nutcracker: The Motion Picture? It’s not only a visual stunner of a movie with a true-but-tweaked approach to the storyline, but the set design and changes to the story were done by Maurice Sendak! Thanks to his influence, this take on the classic has one of the most unique versions of the Land of Sweets’ set pieces that I’ve seen, but it retains the heart and beauty and imagination of the original ballet. It’s definitely worth a watch, if you haven’t seen it yet.
I love that movie! Loved the sets as a kid. Gotts see if its available to stream this year.
8:34 Nice touch with the Wilhelm Scream
Although this might not be the most say insane Special Tom and Jerry ever gave us i'm glad to see it still gave us something really nice to enjoy
Despite all the hardships and bumps in the road, I appreciate that Doug is out there putting up new videos still.
I was around 3 when this came out. It would often play on Cartoon Network around christmas. It was my first, and for the longest time, only introduction to the nutcracker story. I didn't even know what it was called... the only memories I have of it are when Jerry is saved from the ice, and Tom and the cats chasing them through the woods. Even though I haven't seen it in ages, it still has a special place in my heart.
Then... there's that *OTHER* one...
9:43 Correction: Tom is voiced by an uncredited Spike Brandt, who along with Tony Cervone are a television writing, animation and production team at Warner Bros. Animation and formerly at Nickelodeon Animation Studios. The duo is best known for doing various projects about Scooby-Doo, The Flinstones, Tom and Jerry and Looney Tunes. They had also worked on Animaniacs, Duck Dodgers, The Looney Tunes Show and various other projects. Brandt had also voiced Spike Bulldog in various Tom and Jerry direct-to-DVD movies. Jerry on the other hand was given reused vocal effects of the late William Hanna.
I love Spike Brandt's screaming for Tom.
At this point i wouldn't be surprised if we got a Tom and Jerry M.A.S.H. special
Well that would be hard since just about the entire cast is dead.
That and they would need permission from Disney since they have that from Fox.
Back in the 80's on HBO there was a version of The Nutcracker on ice. It was called The Nutcracker: A Fantasy on Ice, I remember it being really good.
I remember this movie. That king of the cats song is such a classic.
This is how you incorporate Tom and Jerry into a iconic, make them the stars instead of the side kicks helping out the protagonist. Why is this such a difficult formula to remember?
Exactly! We’re here to see Tom and Jerry.
I think the reason was because Tom and Jerry are the lead(-ish) characters. Both are not afterthoughts to the plot since they are actually involved. The one that is an afterthought is Tom because he's just another lacky being someone's btch to do things. The problem with other crossover adaptations is both are just unnecessary and would've benefited to just do an animated adaptation.
It's kind of nice to see a Tom and Jerry Special try to be as genuine and as kind of great as it can be
This was always been one of my favorite Christmas specials and will always will be.
Am I the only one who for years thought they had made up the 1990 Animated Nutcracker Movie and yet couldn't figure out why they were having nightmares about a Giant Bloody Rat King?
It's so great to see Tom and Jerry still finding ways to be as interesting and as creatively great as ever
It still amazes me that the Willy Wonka film was what halted these movies from being once a year like Scooby Doo. That being said, I would love to see them team up in a future movie. I’m honestly surprised they didn’t do that in Scooby Doo and Guess Who.
Hopefully the license for Tom and Jerry plus Scooby wouldn't cost Warner that much. Since they only do distribution for the characters but don't own them from a technically.
Then who owns them?
@EWOODJ Turner and Hanna Barbera respectively but their all in the same parent company. It's just that sometimes the rights does get transferred and sometimes like in this case it doesn't only the distribution. Same with the DC characters for example Warner has distribution but not the rights itself.
Honesty it's one of my favourites for Christmas movies of all time. It has everything we love about Tom and Jerry, with the magic of joy it brings. A memorable movie and it shows we love Hanna Barbara and that their work lives on and its loved by many.
Fun Fact. I watched a little bit of the origonal cartoons first, so by the time of watching this film I was already familiar with the cat and mouse duo. This movie was my introduction to both The Nutcracker and Tuffy. So when I saw him in other Tom and Jerry stuff, I actually wondered why he wasn't French XD.
Doug should just make a playlist of every time he’s reviewed an iteration of the Nutcracker.
Much better than ANY of the other Tom and Jerry crossovers (wizard of oz, willy wonka, etc)
This movie was part of my childhood, and it's crazy how many years it has been since I first saw it.
Glad to see others fondly remember it like me.
This was actually my first exposure to The Nutcracker and possibly Tom and Jerry when I was a kid. My love of both the ballet and Tom and Jerry were both born from this special. For that reason, I will always have a soft spot for it.
I honestly kind of respect Tom and Jerry have still try to see what made so great to begin and continue that legacy
I wonder if he'll get around to review either Yogi Bear's All Star Christmas Caper or Yogi's First Christmas soon?
Man, I love this movie. I watch this every year for the nostalgia alone
This is my second favorite Tom and Jerry movie, only behind The Magic Ring. The use of the creative enviroments, the music, and the side characters is great. Plus, Tuffy has a french accent, and that's how I always appreciated it. He's not annoying here.
Ah this, Magic Ring, and Fast and Furry-est were the Holy Trinity of mid to late 2000's Tom and Jerry CN Specials.
One Last Fact: All the characters are all voiced by Canadians, though Tara Strong (La Petite Ballerina) is a Canadian -American duel citizen.
This was the last Tom and Jerry project with Joseph Barbera involvement before his death
You know at this point i wouldn't be surprised if Tom and Jerry went inside someone's body
Merry Christmas, Doug
God, I remember watching this movie as a kid. So much nostalgia.
Tom and Jerry had a rocky road over the years, but this movie was one of my favorite things to watch every Christmas growing up.
This is still my favorite version of The Nutcracker to this day! Mainly because along with the ballet Barbie movies I watched growing up, T&J: ANT was my first introduction to The Nutcracker and Tchaikovsky!
5:20 Tuffy is probably French because he spoke French in the classic short “The Two Mouseketeers.”
This was always a great and comfortable Christmas special for me when I was a child. I watched it pretty much every time it came on. Definitely one of the better Tom & Jerry films.
Talk about a perfect return to review Tom and Jerry crossovers we didn't need, but we still enjoy them for how crazy they can get!
Fun fact, this movie's voice director Andrea Romano did such classics as animaniacs and the d.c.a.u.,with the cast going off to/was on mlp and beast wars, ect. Wouldnt know this from him!
Christmas movies to review:
The Christmas Toy (1987 Jim Henson)
Klaus
National Lampoon Christmas Vacation
White Christmas
Prancer (1989)
The NC keeps giving us so many great classic memories to enjoy
I honestly kind of love what this special gave us and it was great to see Tom and Jerry celebrate the Holiday season in their own special unique way
9:38 i love Spike Brandt's screaming for Tom in these movies since his first time voicing him in The Karate Guard (2005 short) to his last film The Willy Wonka crossover (2017).😊😊
Another Fun Fact: You can hear a WILHELM SCREAM: when Tom and the cats fall off a cliff (at around 20 mins).
Y'know, I'm not always in a Nostalgia critic mood. But when I am, I tend to binge a little... This upload was right in the middle of those binges.
Lucky my mood happened to correlate with their normal upload schedule!
Tom and Jerry can't even take a break from each other on Christmas XD
I just watched “Violent Night”, and I never would have guessed it was the second Christmas movie in which someone gets fed through a wood chipper.
Tom and Jerry meet nutcracker in 3D Tom’s only screaming is because of the nutcracker
You guys always make My day! Specially loved the santa trivia yesterday! Top 10 🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅🎅
This is one of my favourite Tom and Jerry and I’ve grown up with it a lot, I used the ballerina the “The FunnyFace Ballerina” because she always made such funny faces 😂
You should try the “The Nuttiest Nutcracker” critic 😂
I for one enjoy 1990's The Nutcracker Prince. It's no Disney movie, but it does a sweet, earnest attempt to resemble one, and overall I feel gives a nice feel of an old-fashioned Christmas. Not to mention that it's one of the most accurate renditions to my knowledge of the original tale. Though they did age the girl up (she's supposed to be 7), and had her reject the prince's offer to make her his queen in the Land of the Dolls.
Cn we just give Doug credit for the hilarious writing he does for these sponsorships? Santa Claus's lines during the FACTOR commercial had me ROLLING.
'Need an extra boost to support your wellness goals and wellbeing over the holidays? I don't, I'm...I'm depressed.'
😆🤣
Glad you like them!!
I always remember seeing this on Cartoon Network back in the Mid to Late 2000s
"The story is weak." Tell me you've never read the original story without telling me you've never read the original story.
I don't know how I remember/forgot about this, I didn't think I'd seen it before until Jerry goes off with the toy elf and horse. I remember those parts
That tree scene looks like Peter Pan when the natives trapped the lost boys.
Honestly at this point i'm kind of surprised Tom and Jerry hasn't done a special on how Grapes are made
I find it interesting that the NC keeps bringing us something amazing to view during each new Holiday season
This is one of my most favorite Christmas specials- I loved Tom and Jerry as a kid. Me and my papaw would always sit in the living room together and watch them.
I remember watching this special on boomerang when I was super young. And afterwards my mom found it on DVD and we watch it every year lol
6:14 Horse: I was thinking, we need someone to Aid us...
*Silent*
Elf: And...?
6:20 Bela: Wait...

Same!
This movie was a huge part of my childhood. I actually thought of this being reviewed someday and this video delivers!
I love the Nutcracker! And honestly this is a good adaptation.

That was a good Christmas movie.
Agreed. It’s a wonderful film

A fond film that was the last that Joseph Barbera did before is passing and thus a passing of the torch for Tom and Jerry, plus i love The Nutcracker suite
Great to see the Channel Awesome crew keep giving us some wonderful videos to watch during the Holiday season
9:38 I liked this Tom's screams and pains in this amazing Direct-To-Video Tom and Jerry film
Ooooh the nostalgia for this one I have!! I would just watch it before bed so often when I was a kid! ✨🎄
Doug needs to Review Raggedy Ann & Andy: The Great Santa Claus Caper, it’s one of my favorite ones and I’m upset that he didn’t review Raggedy Ann & Andy: The Pumpkin Who Couldn’t Smile back in October

I remember watching this every Christmas on cartoon network with my sister
I hope he does Christmas with the Joker! 🎄
So glad to see you talk about it -- this was legitimately one of my favorite Christmas movies as a kid! Tom and jerry never dissapoint right?!
Most brutal nutcracker yet. Half of these moments would end with Jigsaw laughing..
Merry early Christmas! Also this is one my most Favorite Christmas specials, let alone a Tom and Jerry special!
