And whats weird about it is they’re not mutually exclusive. At least for me, I can be with plenty of people and still feel alone, or be alone and feel the least lonely I ever have.
I remember when this first came out I had just graduated high school and saw this and I didn't really understand it. Then I went to college, met new people, stopped talking to people, fell in and out of love, felt the realities of life, questioned existence as a whole and now I can come back to this and understand the main character on a different level I couldn't before, it just took life hitting me.
@@APairOfOldSkoolVans I just graduated high school too what's not to get? You wake up go to work/college, talk to the same people, do the same routines everyday. You get stuck in a rut and become pessimistic about everything around you.
In an interview, Donald said that one of the rules they had set for the house during the making of this project was that no one could be on their phones. He said he found it weird how when say you're in a conversation with someone and they go get a drink or something, and you're not pulling out your phone to check Twitter. I find it interesting that whenever someone leaves the room (Donald leaving Ludwig, chance leaving the connect four game, Donald leaving the theatre, Donald leaving the fireplace etc) no one ever pulls out their phone to check Twitter or anything, they just sit there.
@@zc6469 This is an interesting note, there are actually many episodes in Atlanta that start with someone waking up being startled just like donald in the beginning of this film.
I think the scene with Danielle Fishel sums up the idea of this film. As we’re watching, we see all of these random events and at the end, like a dream, we are left to wonder what it means. Donald even framed the film like a dream, with the random cuts, dialogue that leads to nothing, even the acting seems to have a bit of a sleepy, trance like, and calm quality to it. This movie is basically meta surrealism. Like a dream, it really means nothing. But I think what’s more profound than that is the fact that we’re LOOKING for meaning in the movie. That is the human condition, that is something that we naturally do. The title “Clapping for the Wrong Reasons” is perfect because we know that this is brilliant, but we aren’t fully secure as in why it is brilliant. I’m probably still wrong about the whole thing myself, and that’s what makes this a work of art. It has no meaning, while at the same time, begging for someone to analyze, understand, and explain it.
Wow, I love moments like these! When I just have this sudden, drastic perspective shift or suddenly gain some new awareness, it's like mentally opening a door and walking through it... Learning usually isn't like that, at least not for me, it's a steady and gradual process that's very linear and contentious. It's like learning is a transition into knowledge and you can track the process of how you got there. But every now and again, something just incidentally clicks in place instead and it's an instantaneous thing. Where all the information you ALREADY HAD comes together to suddenly form a new understanding. It's not linear OR gradual, and you can't track it. It's like a shift of the mind, like you suddenly opened a door. If that at all makes sense? My point is, you're right, we consume everything in the context of searching for a point to it, some meaning for it. We never consume it just to appreciate it for what it is, we expect it to deliver purpose. I suppose I've always been aware of that because I do it, but I've just never considered it before now. When I read your comment, the pieces just clicked together... So anyway, thank you for sharing your insight, it provided me a door to open today :)
You have to respect the brilliance in this project. You have to read the comments to actually see the beauty of it though. Everyone is thinking, trying to put together a coherent story or theme. It truly is genius.
***** There is no point to this, but that is the point, in a way. It makes you think of a plot yourself. So, it's whatever it made *YOU* think it is. By trying to put a definite plot to it, you'd be clapping for the wrong reasons.
I agree. but like...I could take a shit on the sidewalk dressed as a toothpaste tube and scream about Mario Party 4 and people would be like "bruh help me put together what is going on". People are more inclined to think beyond the surface when it involves someone they idolize. Hence the children nowadays "staywoke" campaigns. Don't "staywoke". just think deeply on all matters.
This is the aftermath of Troy Barnes after traveling with Levar Burton in the Childish Tycoon... Troy is depressed and is alone with Pierce Hawthornes money and wealth which was given to him personally when Pierce died... He realizes that even traveling around the world he doesn’t feel connected or doesn’t know what to be... The only thing he loves doing was rapping since he did it in the college hallways and doing songs with his old friend Abed. he’s alone and rich with no motivation.... he has “friends” but can’t relate or even feel close with any of them because they are not his study group or even Abed... He thinks about the study group and wants to comeback to Greendale but feels like everyone he knew back then has now moved on and especially the death of Pierce Hawthorne. Troy is alone with Pierce’s wealth surrounded by fake people all around him because he’s filthy rich... He was a high school superstar quarterback with high hopes and dreams to a rick kid asshole with no motivation and alone without someone to talk to.... Troy realizes and understands why Pierce Hawthorne was furious with the study group leaving him out in every situation... it’s because he was already in a rich family with no father guidance or motivation and was truly alone and didn’t know how to connect with people... all he had was a ton of cash to cope with no one to talk to...
Gaming Voice Over Actor Troy can’t relate with either of them because they aren’t his Spanish study group. I’m just fooling around with the idea of a Community aftermath episode... I highly recommend watching Community if you don’t understand the references I’m pointing out from the series.... It’s a great show that’s on Netflix.
trips me out that it zooms in to the fact the lemons aren't ready to be picked (because they're green and not ripe), while she's talking about not being ready for her wedding
I swear, I have been sinking into a spiral of trying to picture the whole universe of "Because The Internet". Everything from this short film, to the screenplay, to the album visuals, to the private concerts, the cryptic messages to the "Chicken and Futility" short. Even trying to find any possible ties between this album and "Atlanta". I'm so obsessed after nearly a decade. I'm wishing for this world to become a whole movie or series of some sort. It just goes to show you that his genius was needed at the time and it has proven its longevity. Donald Glover is an all time renaissance man and "Because The Internet" was literally a moment in time. 10 years from now, I'm still gonna be obsessed.
"I swear to God, if I were a piano player or an actor or something and all those dopes thought I was terrific, I'd hate it. I wouldn't even want them to clap for me. People always clap for the wrong things." - Catcher in The Rye
This whole short film is explained in that last conversation. Life is just things you can't explain. Think about it all. Half the film is full of things you can't explain. I mean, you can try to, but then you'd be "Clapping for the Wrong Reasons". In other words, you'd be appreciating something that isn't even there. For instance, most people only question the whole pulling the golden tooth out of his nose. But in reality, that's only one of many unexplained things in this film. Why'd Bino just hang up the phone like that ? Why'd the guy throw up in the beginning ? Why'd Bino care if he was scary ? Why'd the power go out ? Why'd the one girl have the crazy dream ? Why'd he pull out a golden tooth from his nose ? Why'd he take a rape shower afterwards ? Why'd dude get the death threats ? Why'd the kid wanna rub butts with Bino then kiss him ? & The one throughout the story.. Who is the girl and why was she even there ? "Sometimes you just can't explain things" - The last line of their ending conversation. & The thing about it all, is that they all just accept the things that happen in the film. The whole film sets sort of a boring mood because they're all just contempt with these strange things happening. Some of them question certain things, but at the end, they never get an answer so they just move on. Most people are left wondering, what was the point of this movie ? But you won't get an answer. But that's not going to stop you. You'll just.. Move on.. EDIT: Same thing with life. Most people try to give a meaning to everything that happens in their life. "Everything happens for a reason". But that's not the case. Things just happen and you can't explain them. If you try, once again, you'd be "Clapping for the Wrong Reasons". Things'll happen in life that you just can't explain, but in the end, you won't get the answers, but you'll just learn to accept it and move on. Or at least you should.
What ur saying makes a lot of sense but for me I could answer almost all the questions except the gold tooth one because most of this stuff is like my regular day especially the girl sometimes my brother just invites random girls that I'm just like who are u till its just whatever and I just say sup
I think there's something in it about every day being the same as well, the ending is the same as the beginning. Something about how his life has no real meaning kinda like the other comment said and that people are clapping at him for the wrong reasons because he doesn't know who he is... idk. this video is weird.
Your comment adds so much meaning to this scene, but at the same time sometimes you get so caught up in the vibe you just keep vibing to his music even after he turns it off
that absoluttly complements the right next sceen where a girl is telling him her dream but he its just in their own mind and toughts. so he dont actually knows what to say about that
Hiro actually mentioned in a recent interview that a lot of the DNA from Atlanta started with Clapping for the Wrong Reasons. www.esquire.com/entertainment/a15895714/donald-glover-atlanta-march-2018/
Honestly I have no idea what this means, but I assume it is about loneliness in some form. He's got all these friends but like it's never a really personal thing they talk about, always talking about something other than him. The guy on the computer starts talking about himself, after Donald says "I love airplanes" a pretty personal statement, the guy just talks about himself, Donald's statement isn't carried on. His brother in his room just carries on as normal, as if Donald's presence means nothing. Donald just stands there, and listens. When he is talked to it's not about him. The girl in the pool... she talks about him, but never in a positive way. Perhaps this means that even though he has people to talk to, it's not fulfilling? At the end it appears that the cycle redoes itself, evidence by the fact that he doesn't know what month it is when he answers the phone in the beginning, which by the way asks about someone other than him, meaning each day blends with the next. The tooth is lost on me, but I do think that the girl that no one knows perhaps represents a manifestation of his need to interact with others, because she gives him a reason to, and ignores him at the end like most guys ignore feelings like he's experiencing. So when Donald asks his friend why he waved to the girl, the response is "I'm a gentlemen" or in other words, he is just being polite. Donald's friends only talk to him out of politeness, not out of a desire too. Not being wanted is the loneliest feeling. So my take is that Donald feels trapped in a loop, that repeats itself without meaning. I think he wants and is missing a feeling of being wanted, or being important. Life just goes on around him without him influencing it much. I think it's a nice touch that when by the fire, his friend stays out when he goes inside, Donald's decision to go didn't affect his friend at all. His friends are playing connect four, they can connect but he can't(stretching?). He is in a void, where he feels disconnected from those that surround him. The only thing that gets him up in the morning, is a need to have someone wake him up for a reason. EDIT: Holy cow thanks for all the likes and nice comments! It’s interesting to hear all your other interpretations and additions to my own, good stuff! I failed to analyze the title of the video, but some comments on this comment do a good job adding perspective so check that out if this was interesting.
They literally werent i found this tumblr post by the girl misla who was talking abt locker rooms etc, she said this is how they were living none of the conversations they have are scripted the dude dancing literally did that around the house
I believe it's about the emptiness Glover feels now that he's finally wealthy and successful. He wanders through his day jaded and disaffected by his lavish surroundings (casually bouncing a basketball around his mansion, picking lemons from his own grove with a beautiful girl only to remark that they've picked too many, cutting off the new track he's showing his friends when all he hears is a chorus of "Yeah man that's turnt"), with people taking advantage of him (his brother lives in a dump of a room smoking weed, eating pizza and playing video games, no one even cares that there's a stranger wandering the house, the 'yes' men from the other scene). The rap he spits a capella is all about material excess, and he symbolically pulls a gold tooth (a grill) out of his nose at the end (ironically, the first a capella rap expresses a youthful, f*ck-the-man, I'm gonna live my life and smoke my weed mentality, and Glover's more conscious response gives him a bloody nose). At the end of the day, he goes to sleep only to wake up the exact same way the next morning. We're "clapping for the wrong reasons" because we're endorsing this lifestyle as the pinnacle of achievement, when it's actually empty and unfulfilled.
This short film (even though people may find no meaning to it) is such a beautiful one. Its because of the life in it. The feelings, vibes, looks, and sounds. I love it so much
I GET IT!!!!!! in case anyone missed it..Abella Anderson is the girl from the script who he says hes been in a relationship with for a few years over webcam (hence, the 3005 lyric video). No one else knows who he is talking about because she was only apart of his own internet life. Hes saying we cant escape our internet life because it is now part of us. This also explains the gold molar
i love the overall tone of this film. even though there were plenty of other people, it still felt cold and lonely. also, i'm sure the house was going into foreclosure. he didn't seem too interested about taking care of it
you know thats actually a basketball players house that he and some of the people in this video rented out for the summer to make because the internet before he put it out December of 2013
The main goal of this is to illustrate how Donald and his friends aren't really friends at all. They just live with him and that the full extent of their relationship. This is also the full extent of the video too. Its a mundane uninteresting video with no real meaning. And the whole point is that there is no meaning to the video, just like there is no meaning to his friendships.

I think the video perfectly loops to represent that The Boy is stuck in a loop of meaningless and mundane relationships, trying to give meaning to things in his life but failing
Am I the only one who loves this for no apparent reason? Like I don't fully understand it but I also feel like I DO understand what I'm watching but all I know is that I enjoy it. I honestly think Donald Glover is the greatest artist of our time.
This always brings me peace when my head is all over the place. I remember first watching this a couple years ago and it always gave me this uneasy feeling, but since then it’s helped me revisit memories from that time long ago. I was in high school then, not knowing who I am. Shit I still don’t... But this video helps me put the pieces together in a way that I can’t explain how. thank you Donald. I will meet you one day and thank you in person for helping me stay alive and getting me through high school. Without you, I wouldn’t be here.
it's gambinos dream it might not make sense at first but it has a infinite amount of possibilities it is to show people you are clapping for the wrong reasons for the attempt and not for the meaning. People this is the mind of an artist a creator. it's random it's repetitive and it is to create thoughts to provoke ideas to inspire others.
MysticPendragon A the whole thing is supposed to not make sense. Ideas are supposed to be all over the place. His friends are good friends and they do listen to the things he says. That's not the point of the video.
I think it has something to do with the reality of fame. I think it shows that even though your famous, you can still be lonely. He has all of these people around his house yet there isnt much communication if you think about it. They have a few conversations. He has somebody around his house who he doesnt even know which could show that being a celeb could result in you not really knowing the people around you. Also, the fact that they are all using real names means that its not characters and it could actually be how they all live. The fact that it is called 'clapping for the wrong reasons' could mean that all of the fans or people who support him could clap for him doing well in a project but they are only clapping because of that. Not clapping for how he is living his life feeling lonely and segregated from the real world which is why they should clap for him. Thats what i think the meaning is but its crazy how everyone sees it in a different way
Yeah I think you're right about everything you said, at least to me.In fact, I didn't really see it in a different way than you, and I think the general idea you said is accurate or close to it.Also I'm pretty sure that there are several specific meanings for certain instances in this video too that most people people miss out on.
+whosAire i want to make films myself and ive learnt a lot about meanings behind films and i know that donald glover hides a lot of deeper messages in his art. That helped me to get my view of it
only 3 years old and now probably one of the most pinnacle pieces of art portraying the lie and dissatisfaction with time and being present in our day and age. donald knows hes ahead of his time he doesnt even need to say it but i can see right through what hes doing. from his first album to the movies hes been in. i see you donald. dont stop
I saw him do stand up 10 years ago. I turned to my bf (now my husband) and said watch this guy is going to be something big. Ive been a huge fan ever since than.
Here are some of my theories on what things symbolize in the video. Tell me what you think. I really would like to toss around ideas with somebody. - The girl represents the life that is pulling him around aimlessly. More specifically, she represents the lavish life. She is like Kim Kardashian. A product of what media and entertainment have decided is beauty, and the kind of girl you need to have to be successful. She wakes Bino up, and he gets up without question. She tells him to go see his brother, and he does without asking. She walks by in a bikini, tempting him to follow. It finally ends with him confronting her. This is him 'waking up' and standing up to the lifestyle that he has created, but the lifestyle he ultimately hates is pulling him around. - The fridge scene is another example of showing off this fame. When he opens the right fridge, the interior doesn't make you think 'he's rich'. If you saw the interior of the right side with no context, you wouldn't think 'rich'. Then when he opens the left, it is stocked with Pellegrino. If you were to see this interior with no context, you would think 'this person is rich.' It's just another statement to say, "I'm rich and famous. I made it", but really it is just water. - Buddha is often correlated with self-enlightenment, awareness and being in the present, and following your path. When he stares at the Buddha, this is him looking into himself. Bino is not happy living the life that he is in, and feels like he has lost his true self. This is him thinking about his enlightenment and becoming aware of where his life has pulled him. He is becoming aware of all of his materialistic things that he has filled his life with, which have replaced any genuine human connection. He isn't who he used to be, and he isn't who he wants to be. - The girl comes and knocks on the window to bring Bino down to see his brother. When he walks in, they are talking about who has seen more vaginas. The friends all think it is funny, but you can see that Bino just isn't amused. He feels like he is above all of this shallow talk. This scene was the girl (who represents the lifestyle that Bino has been pulled into) attempting to bring him back into the life that he is pulling away from. He is pulled away from producing his music to listen to friends talk about something that doesn't matter. He was crafting his work, and was pulled away to listen to people ramble on about sex (another theme that idiotic rap is centered around). Instead of staying and feeding into them, or laughing for the wrong reasons, he walks away. - Martial arts is often correlated with Buddhism and Zen. Zen actually played a part on the becoming of martial arts. Because Bino walked away from the talk that he was not interested in anymore, instead of staying and trying to fit himself in, he stayed on his path to enlightenment. That is why the martial arts scene was shown afterwards. It is almost like a cutback to the Buddha scene in the beginning. This martial arts scene ends with her bowing, a sign of respect. Respect for him in walking away. - His conversation with the girl in the pool is the genuine human connection that he has been looking for. Instead of trying to force himself into a conversation, he just flows. You can tell he is relaxed, which is something to note because there are times in this film when he seems detached and uninterested around social groups (like the brother scene). He could have stayed in that room with his brother and forced himself to fit in where he wasn't truly happy, but instead he went and had this conversation. - The shoes symbolizes all of the people he has let into his life that he has no connection with. He is surrounded by all of these people, but he still feels lonely and disconnected. - Connect 4 is the simplicity of life. When Chance plays, it takes him a good 30 seconds to make his move. Instead of taking it a move at a time and living in the present, he treats it like chess and is living in the future. This goes back to the beginning of the video when Bino is getting something out of the fridge and the two girls are talking. She says, "yo this is connect 4 not chess." Connect 4 is a turn at a time, and chess is having to think 10 steps ahead. If you live like you're playing chess, you aren't ever going to be in the moment, and you are constantly going to be living in the future. - Topanga giving Bino lemons goes to the old saying, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade". The girl is life, and she is handing Bino lemons. She continuously hands him lemons, and even though they have enough, Bino just keeps taking them. He doesn't butt in and say, 'that is enough lemons'. He waits until life is ready to stop handing them to him. Even when they get up to go away, she throws in a couple more. This represents that eventually you have to take the time to walk away from life when you are put on with too many challenges and responsibilities. You have to take the time to make lemonade from your lemons. If you don't, they are going to pile up and you are going to become too overwhelmed. - Correct me if I'm wrong, but when Bino is freestyling with another guy, is that not his brother. If so, than this whole scene would be a symbol of who he has turned into and how even his brother can see how Bino has been influenced by the rich lifestyle. His brother raps while Bino is surrounded by these people dancing. Everybody looks happy, but when it shows Bino, you can see that he doesn't look that happy, at all really. And his brother's rap matches up with a lot of past things I've talked about: higher self (Bino's journey to enlightenment), I'm a slave to the darkness in my innermost cave (Bino's depression/not being happy. He's a slave to the rap game), picking up expensive habits (his habits that have come from wealth), losing all these memories (losing who he used to be). If this his brother, than this would be his past calling to him on what he is now. When Bino raps, it is about cars, girls, and wealth. It doesn't compare to what his brother just rapped. When Bino finishes, he gets a nose bleed and gets up to leave. When you watch his brother, he seems in disbelief and disappointed. He raises his eyebrow like he is thinking, and then it ends with a discouraged, 'wow'. I think this is his past seeing that Bino has changed and that he has let the wealth change him. - The nosebleed may mean two things. 1: Nosebleeds can be caused by anxiety and stress which are also two symptoms of depression. This could be showing that Bino is unhappy. Or 2: Nosebleeds can be caused by high altitudes. After Bino's rap, it's like he had an inflated sense of his ego. Look at me and all of my wealth; his rap had hardly any substance. This nosebleed was a symbol of him feeling higher up than others, and a reminder to bring himself down to earth. To stay grounded. - The gold tooth is a sign of wealth. Gold teeth have become a sign of wealth in our society, and a way to show people that you are rich. I think this was just supposed to look as painful as possible because this shows that, he can have the wealth he wants, but is it really what he wants? Does he really want to go through the trials of things that he doesn't enjoy, so he can show off his wealth. - The scene with his friend at the campfire starts with his friends talking about owning a gun. Then Bino goes on to talk about when he was 5 and kissed a boy. The point of this whole conversation is that, even though they went through completely different situations, we're all just trying to figure it out. We are all trying to figure out why things happened, figure out what they mean, how they shaped us today. Sometimes it means nothing, sometimes it means everything. This symbolizes that even in our differences, we are all just trying to figure out what life means. - The title 'Clapping for the Wrong Reasons'. Clapping is an action that somebody does when they are pleased, impressed, happy, etc. with something. It is also something that, if everybody around you starts doing, you are going to start clapping as well. This is Bino's life. He has been doing everything to fit in, or has been influenced to live a life that he didn't plan on living.
just an opinion but: I think this is the absurdity of man. while u would think someone that seems to have all u could ask for would be happy, he's not. he's stuck in a groundhog day thing where everyday seems to be more of the same. he keeps askin who the girl is bc he prolly wakes up to that all the time. girls just wanna be around him so im guessin he finds chicks he doesn't know at his spot all the time. think the gold tooth = his wealth. so while everyone seems to be happy around him, he looks super lonely. like everyone is playin a game, or dancin, or tellin a boring ass story and he feels disinterested. meanwhile nobody truly cares about his stories. in short, even though u would think he has it all, his team is much happier than him. he's lonely and sees everything as trivial and just killin time and kinda like what's the point (of life)... clapping for the wrong reason= theres no point in applauding this, in other words what's the purpose of life, why do we exist? sry for length
that's what I got when I saw the 50 sec version but now that I see the full version I think Chynna Pegram is right. The convo by the bond fire gave it away
Chynna Pegram all films have a meaning. I actually get what he is saying. I think this goes deeper than what sox said but no film has no meaning. Its all up for interpretation but I think Donald Glover is smarter than to make a 25 min film about nothing.
AnnoyingBritishKid yep... couldn't agree more, but I didn't want be a know it all. All art is inspired. Whether it be by an emotion, event, or idea, nobody would go to the trouble and expense to make this for nothing. What convinced me is when he asks God about something when he's on the couch rapping (IDK exactly bc it's been a while and I didn't re-watch) but then there's a Buddha in the background when he's vaping, which are conflicting ideals, which gives me a sense of him wondering. In any case, glad you said that bc it's almost verbatim what I thought after her response :)
I want to explain the meaning behind clapping for the wrong reasons and because the internet. If any of you have read Catcher in the Rye this will all make sense. Roscoes Wetsuit are basically the ducks in Catcher in the Rye. Holden isn't actually talking about ducks, but he's talking about finding himself. That's what Roscoes Wetsuit is. Its Donald giving physical representation to the questions he's asking about himself. Clapping for the Wrong Reasons is a play on words from the quote in the book. Holden says something along the lines of "Everyone claps for the wrong reasons." Thus Clapping for the Wrong Reasons. The entire album and movie are essentially what Donald Glover has been repeatedly saying over and over again in his interviews and his instagram. He's lost. He's lost like Holden Caulfield. Donald hasn't been acting in the role of The Boy he's been acting as Holden because he needs some purpose. Holden also smoked and drank frequently which is a habit Donald has been picking up. I don't know if any of this makes sense or if this adds more questions, but read Catcher in the Rye then watch Donalds interviews, this movie, and read the script for Because of The Internet.
I watched this when it first came out. Didn’t know who Kyle was then. Now watching this in 2017 and instantly recognized the Kyle song. Damn! Haha. So tight.
I remember exactly where I was the first time I watched this music video. I was dating a girl in the Marines she was stationed in San Diego. I would spend some time in the area while she worked in Miramar. There was a lot of uncertainty in my life, but also a lot of happiness. I was young, a free spirit. Things have gotten better since then, she ended up teaching me some lessons. Music really is a time machine.
I’m 18 now so I would have been 12 when this came out. Wasn’t familiar with the girl since I started that part of life around 14-15. So I decide to look her up thinking she’s just an actress. Sorry grandma I didn’t mean for you to see those foul images.
I think that no one can see or feel the presence of the mysterious girl in the screenplay. But she wanders around all over the place keeping him motivated. I think it is a personification of his ambition and drive waking him up and pushing him towards a goal. There is a beauty in that passion, he just has to find out how to utilize it. That goes along with the theme of existentialism through out both the screenplay and the album.
This was test footage for Atlanta. This film was to show how diverse Donald Glover can be in a professionally filmed environment. He probably uses this for reference every time he auditions for a movie or show.
Yo I've been working as a director and what not and think ya should feel free to watch a little something I put together. It's a little comedy web show thing that are like our Adventures before Adventures. Basically this revolves around a tattoo that we never see and a some walking in-between. ua-cam.com/video/vuiZK-N86bw/v-deo.html
I was just thinking that just now. Having watched Atlanta and seeing this prior to that and returning to this piece of art i can clearly see the reference. Genius.

+good ass youtube This is something I've never heard before. Makes sense. Maybe it's because he doesn't know why he gets up every morning (follows the boy's depressed motif)?
+Carter Elliott That's what I was trying to get at. The Boy seems to be in an existential depression. "Why am I here, why am I alive?" He doesn't know why he wakes up in the morning, but it might as well be a sexy girl, because the that's arguably our only purpose in this world, to procreate. He's not engaging in any relations with this girl, and that's what's getting him up everyday: the unattainable that always looks like it can be attained by playing your cards right. Chasing the dragon. Always wanting more. They didn't need that many lemons to make guacamole. He has everything most people dream of; he should be happy, right? Maybe its that fact alone that depresses him.
I watched this a few weeks ago, and I just can't get it out of my head, I'm not sure why. I know I forget most things I watch, but I can't seem to forget about this, and I have no idea why. Fascinating

Then I went to college, met new people, stopped talking to people, fell in and out of love, felt the realities of life, questioned existence as a whole and now I can come back to this and understand the main character on a different level I couldn't before, it just took life hitting me.

It truly is genius.
good point. the comments really show how others interpreted the film.
Danny Hengel 😂😂True, but whatever it takes to get people thinking, I guess.
that doesn't make it genius just because it's confusing, a lot of stupid things are confusing.. like your stupid comment xD

That rape shower question made me laugh way to hard....
This comment deserves more likes
What ur saying makes a lot of sense but for me I could answer almost all the questions except the gold tooth one because most of this stuff is like my regular day especially the girl sometimes my brother just invites random girls that I'm just like who are u till its just whatever and I just say sup
I think there's something in it about every day being the same as well, the ending is the same as the beginning. Something about how his life has no real meaning kinda like the other comment said and that people are clapping at him for the wrong reasons because he doesn't know who he is... idk. this video is weird.
The fuck is a "rape shower"?

Thats what i think the meaning is but its crazy how everyone sees it in a different way
I also think that it ends how it starts which could show that everyday is the same in this lifestyle.

That helped me to get my view of it
i come back here every year, and i can’t quite comprehend why but this video is just so comforting.
love reading everyone’s theories, more creative then i would originally have thought
Finee
only 3 years old and now probably one of the most pinnacle pieces of art portraying the lie and dissatisfaction with time and being present in our day and age. donald knows hes ahead of his time he doesnt even need to say it but i can see right through what hes doing. from his first album to the movies hes been in. i see you donald. dont stop

I saw him do stand up 10 years ago. I turned to my bf (now my husband) and said watch this guy is going to be something big. Ive been a huge fan ever since than.
MadamMumbles . He has that something ...even his short scenes in The Martian, he commands those short scenes and fascinates the viewer.
this is the video version of "got a house full of homies, why i feel so the opposite?"
priya true
9:21 the two guys on the couch are nodding their heads in perfect unison
Good eye.
so... to the beat of the song?
Song?
Man I come back to this every 4 months or so and it inspires me more than anything I've seen. I don't know what it is about it
Here are some of my theories on what things symbolize in the video.
+Chance The Wrapper couldn't agree more with these theories.
+Chance The Wrapper tight
Wrong
ur mind is in 3005 my friend

FlyLo's verse was poetic...love it. "Pickin up expensive habits, chasin after little rabbits, hope they'll lead me to a place of magic."
I’ve watched this at least 2 times a year since it came out and I’m back here in 2020❤️ Saw gambino this summer and was so happy at lollapolooza
the fact that this can video can literally be looped forever because the first and last scene are identical
just an opinion but:
I think this is the absurdity of man. while u would think someone that seems to have all u could ask for would be happy, he's not. he's stuck in a groundhog day thing where everyday seems to be more of the same. he keeps askin who the girl is bc he prolly wakes up to that all the time. girls just wanna be around him so im guessin he finds chicks he doesn't know at his spot all the time. think the gold tooth = his wealth. so while everyone seems to be happy around him, he looks super lonely. like everyone is playin a game, or dancin, or tellin a boring ass story and he feels disinterested. meanwhile nobody truly cares about his stories. in short, even though u would think he has it all, his team is much happier than him. he's lonely and sees everything as trivial and just killin time and kinda like what's the point (of life)... clapping for the wrong reason= theres no point in applauding this, in other words what's the purpose of life, why do we exist? sry for length
Lol theres no meaning to this....ur clapping for the wrong reasons.
that's what I got when I saw the 50 sec version but now that I see the full version I think Chynna Pegram is right.
He acts like everything is alright and he could never be better but he is lonely and needs a purpose. In 3005 it also explains his loneliness

I come back to this video every couple of months. Every time I watch it, it’s like I’m seeing myself.
MUST HAVE BEEN THE BEST FEELING EVER TO FIGURE THIS OUT
ric pave It felt like clarity, and it did feel great to figure it out.
Thanks Obama wow okay i was suppose to read that book last week, I will read it later today before reading the rest of this comment then

Okay, I started reading catcher in the rye and your analogy makes sense. Couldn't agree more.
I watched this when it first came out. Didn’t know who Kyle was then. Now watching this in 2017 and instantly recognized the Kyle song. Damn! Haha. So tight.
Same man, and now Fruit Snacks is probably my favorite Kyle song. Gambino always ahead of the times
Kyle- Fruit Snacks
Thats exactly why I came to look at the comments now, 2019
4:37 them working on “The Party” looks so tough, i’d spaz myself hearing a beat as hypnotizing as that
I remember exactly where I was the first time I watched this music video.
"Pray to god everynight to make me believe he exists." Realist shit I've ever heard.
And then he gets a nosebleed. Lol
When you realize he’s wearing the same outfit as he did in the bonfire music video.
yoni he just got back from summer camp.
XzRaiderzX play along... he got back from Camp, right?
And the glasses? That’s like old nerdy gambino
I’m 18 now so I would have been 12 when this came out. Wasn’t familiar with the girl since I started that part of life around 14-15. So I decide to look her up thinking she’s just an actress. Sorry grandma I didn’t mean for you to see those foul images.
What girl?
@@flamingstallion exactly.
what girl?
Prolly Abella Anderson 😅
This has been in my watch later for years, finally got around to watching it
Makes me miss the Chance and Donald days
I think that no one can see or feel the presence of the mysterious girl in the screenplay. But she wanders around all over the place keeping him motivated. I think it is a personification of his ambition and drive waking him up and pushing him towards a goal. There is a beauty in that passion, he just has to find out how to utilize it. That goes along with the theme of existentialism through out both the screenplay and the album.
i could not agree more! thanks for sharing. :)
Abela Anderson was like damn that was the easiest film I ever did
perfection in every aspect. this short film makes me feel a different emotion each time I watch it.

I was just thinking that just now. Having watched Atlanta and seeing this prior to that and returning to this piece of art i can clearly see the reference. Genius.

i really hope that’s what happens in season three
I like to think of this as a Community episode.

The girl is what gets him out of bed every morning. No one knows who she is, or if she is really there at all, but she keeps waking him up.
***** I think the girl is just a symbol for something he doesn't know, which is why he gets up every morning.
+good ass youtube That was very insightful, and I'm pretty sure that's the message of this film.
I think it's the girl he meets in his dreams on the moon in -life the biggest troll- good point :D
