  • Usually on the Monday following my construction updates, I release the results of the poll conducted at the end of each update regarding which area of the layout my viewers would like to see me focus my efforts on next.
    For this past weekend's poll, the viewers determined by majority vote that they would like to see more work done on the Royal Gorge Route! I will primarily continue work on the scenery forms, and have formed a plan on the overall look of the scenery in the background of the track. I'm hoping to have a good portion of this complete in time for the next update video.
    Thank you all for your participation, I'll see you in two weeks with the results of my efforts!

    Nice update. In addition to the hot wire, get yourself a cheap set of various wire wheels to use in your cordless drill. Great way to shape and rough up the foam.. give you a rough rock look pretty easily.
    Can't wait for the next one.

      Thanks for the suggestion! I'll have to see if I can find examples of wire wheels being used for that purpose as I have not heard of that.

    Looking good. The pink foam is great with a hot wire cutter. You can make your general slopes easily then either carve or sculptamold, and use rock molds. Sculptamold is easy to carve also and you don’t have all the pink bits to pick out. I didn’t like using expanding foam to glue the pink foam together. I just used styrogoo or liquid nails for projects. The latter being a lot easier.

      Ah...thanks for that comment about carving Sculptamold. I've never used that product, and was curious about its properties post-drying. I'm not quite done experimenting with expanding foam just yet (I still have most of a can bought and paid for), but I think I'm going to relegate it to its advertised use, that of filling cracks...in my case, cracks or seams between foam blocks. I noticed that carving the expanding foam leaves a pretty porous surface that won't serve very well as a rock face, but I suppose a layer of sheetrock mud or Sculptamold could fix that. I agree with you on using either liquid nails or tacky foam glue for gluing the foam down.

      @@KandWRailroaderI saw white water in your photographs and I am clueless about that. But this guy did it really well. Thought you might like it.

    I’m really looking forward to this part. I have faith that you will nail this and if it’s not exactly what you want the first time, you can always change it. Go for it!

      @@derekalexander4030 Thanks Derek. I think that's why I like the foam. As long as I don't glue too much into place right off the bat, if I don't like how it looks, it'll be super easy to tear out and start over. I have lots of foam leftover from subroadbed construction so I'm not afraid to make mistakes.

    While I am not a fan of the hot wire foam shaper just make sure you ventilate the room while u use it. The fumes are not good to breathe. I feel I got better results with a serrated knife but You’ll be fine with any method you choose. I am looking forward to what you do with the scene

      Thank you for the reminder! I've not used one of those before and will likely make my first attempt in the next few days. Today I finished adding all the foam along the backdrop from the tunnel portal to just past the beginning of the siding (so just a few feet). I want to have most of that section carved in time for next Friday's update, and maybe a base coat of paint to see how my first attempt at rock carving (and foam slicing) goes, and just to see how a 14" high (100 scale feet) rock wall looks. I'll definitely be looking for feedback on this one, good or bad!

    Great update, you'll figure out the scenery. For some reason I am focused on the Airstream Trailer and Pickup truck :) At least I think that is what it is. Been in a few videos :) Great work, and good luck.

      Well I don't think you'd be able to read the label if it was printed on there in 1/87th scale, but I'm calling it an Airstream. 😁 As for the pickup, I've owned an F-150 almost my entire adult life, so I had to get one of those on the layout. My wife and I like to play "Where's Waldo" with some of the cars and other items on the layout for each update video. The first car I bought for the layout was a '65 or '66 convertible Mustang that she used to drive when we dated in high school. She told me today that she secretly bought some more little details that's she's going to be re-locating around the layout every so often, so that should be fun. I'll have to remember to include them in my update videos. Thanks for watching!

    Are you planning a prison for Canon City. That is a big thing for the city back in the day? Liking the layout.

    • @KandWRailroader
      @KandWRailroader  Місяць тому

      That's a great question. The prison is fairly close to the Royal Gorge train station and I have considered including it because of its unique appeal. The one thing that I haven't yet decided on is what type of backdrop to use for Canon City. It would be great if I could get a panoramic photo of downtown, which could conceivably include the prison. That might be one that I would like to take myself, then have someone print up for me. Thanks for watching!
