My name is Allen and this channel is dedicated to my HO scale model railroad layout. The channel primarily focuses on the construction of the layout with twice-monthly updates (usually every other Friday), but also includes randomly posted operations videos as the layout progresses. I enjoy receiving feedback and suggestions regarding the layout, and have made a few changes along the way based on great viewer-recommended ideas. The layout is based on a basic linear path from El Dorado, Kansas to near Salida, Colorado, a path that I traveled many times growing up with my family on our summer trips to Colorado. There isn't much to see along that route, especially in western Kansas/eastern Colorado, but the railroad tracks, primarily belonging to the BNSF, parallel almost the entire route. Other roadnames represented on the layout are the Union Pacific, Missouri Pacific, Denver & Rio Grande Western, Southern Pacific and Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. Thank you for watching!
How I do stuff on the K&W Model Railroad - Improved method for weathering track!
This is a demonstration video on how I have improved my method for weathering track, specifically regarding the ties. The credit for this improvement goes to @SPSteve . After watching one of his videos and seeing his technique, I improved on my own and I believe it has resulted in a much improved look for my weathered track. I also made a small modification to the brush that I use which I believe also helps with the dry brushing technique used here. You be the judge...

Hi there. I really like the execution of your idea here, and I like the fact that you can just turn on the camera and start talking and documenting your thought process. I'm going through my own layout build right now, and I haven't felt up to making videos like this of the process just yet. I've documented most of my progress in writing so far. "great minds think alike". I have a very similar area of my layout that I haven't 100% decided what to do with yet, but I currently have it drawn up in a very similar fashion to what you did here. My layout doesn't have a full on helix like yours does here, but I have a double main line that loops out and around the peninsula that creates a similar looking dead corner. I too had the idea of placing a power plant in that corner and using the same split and shove back method. I haven't decided if I'm going to stick with the power plant, or swap it for a feed mill that's in the same area. I'm not familiar with your railroad yet, but I'm gonna take a look around your channel and see if I can find some more ideas for my layout before I set anymore track.
@@iantha_branch Welcome to the channel! For most of my videos, I do speak "off-the-cuff", but for these design videos, I have notes that I refer to mid-recording to make sure I don't leave out any important points. Good luck with your continuing decision-making progress and build!
Ah yes, having fun weathering ties. Keep up the good work.

drybrushing tip: use a round soft brush, and take a lot more paint off, its way easier and you only have to hold the brush just enough not to drop it. for the technique look up "Artis Opus D series" and their drybrush videos, can do some amazing effects and do it seriously fast end result looks very good though, which is the bit that matters

Would highly suggest using a woodland scenics incline starter for your incline transition....you will thank me later!!! Looking great so far!
@@JohnAPrescott Normally I would agree with you, and I did try that, but the grade change needed to be more subtle and nuanced than I would could achieve using that method.
I have had some low spots under the ties. Real pain. What I did to make sure the Trac was completely supported was to fill in the whole area. I cut strips of poster board. The strips were then cut to length one at a time. Each layer was glued down and each layer was shorter then the lower layer. This does form a long and shallow step effect but there is plenty of contact with the tieswhen it gets glued to the poster board fill. Also, less ballasting is needed because it is not filling in a lot of hallow space.
@@AirwolfCrazy I have seen that method and you raise a good point. I should add more consistent support.

My advice on the River George scene is like some others ….. is what you did and remove almost all of the rocks at the river bottom . You should also paint the bottom a dark color to show depth and go lighter towards the shore. Let your Bob Ross side take over 😊 !!! Happy rocks and happy river 😊 . And have fun 😊 .
I will have to give that a try once I get all the rock in place. I may re-paint the center portion of the river as it is now because it may be too dark, but I'm not sure yet. I am definitely having more fun working on this scene now that I am deep into it than I thought I would when it was just a sheet of foamboard. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Have you seen any of southern Alberta rail? He has very good tutorials on how to build pine trees for your mountain range. Although he’s N scale, I don’t think it would be too hard to up size it to HO.
I think I have. At this point though, I don't think I'm ready to dedicate the time and energy to build my own trees. I think the largest amount of trees on the layout will be this hillside cut and the one closer to Canon City. Beyond that, I don't think I will need a huge number of trees anywhere else and I already have a pretty decent collection of a variety of commercial trees. I think manufacturing my own is just one of those aspects of model railroading that I'm just not interested in at this point. It could be one of those things that I decide to re-do once the layout is mostly complete. Thank you for the tip though. I know there are lots of great tutorials out there for building your own trees, and inexpensively too.
your doing great man!!! yes remove the rocks from the river bed. you can always get dirt from the yard and put it in a tray and dry it out by the sun instead of buying it.
Thank you! Unfortunately, my yard is all clay and I don't think would look right...but then again, I haven't tried so who knows? Kudos to you for encouraging me to consider it again!
Hi from the 🇬🇧, love your videos keep up the great work. Have you tried tea bags for dirt? It's cheap and easy to get hold of. You just cut the tea bags and empty the leaves. Anyway just a thought. Susannah

@@livingston878 Welcome aboard! I remember when there were still rails down Gordy and when there was a lot more train traffic in El Dorado in general. I think my earliest memories are when Pester refinery was still producing.

@@cjbeyer8340 You're right! I ordered the Walthers kits months ago but I know I don't have enough...now I know where to get the rest! Thanks!
I think that's probably the right idea to remove the bulk of the stones from the river bed. Will you be leaving the river bed all one colour ar painting it a lighter colour towards the edges which would possibly give it a shallower look towards the edges. I've never done it myself, but I have seen others do it. Have a quick look at our community page, I've added some photos of a church I've just finished building. At 7:45 you show the catchment area with the rails, Try tap filter material (screen) , make a wire catchment fence... Just a thought... Amazing progression...
I had considered that, I might do that up against the rock face in places as containment fences exist on the prototype in places. What I'm more curious about is how should embed the rails themselves so that they stand vertical, and can actually hold back some of the larger rock material without tipping over. At this point, I think I'm going to try joint compound, reinforced with the sticky drywall tape in narrow strips so they are easy to hide with the drywall mud, but still strong enough to reinforce the mud once it dries. I suppose I could also just drill holes for the rails in the plywood subroadbed, and glue them in place too. I could still use joint compound so the rails look like they are embedded in the ground, but the joint compound won't be responsible on its own for providing strength for the rails. Thanks for letting me game that out in black and white for the first time, instead of just in my head...LOL.
@@KandWRailroader Use wire cable crossmembers attached to the stantions, to hold the fencing.

For the electrical panel, you can use magnets to hold backdrop in place! Love the layout! Coming along nicely!
That's a good idea...I can also just tape the backdrop directly to the panel since it sits flush with the wall (almost), then cut the seams so it can be opened/removed. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Very nice layout! I used the Peco numbers and they are nice. But, I switched them out for the Tomar numbers. 👍
Bumbers
@tas7997 Thank you! The Tomar bumpers are nice, but I don't like that you have to use insulated joiners, although I suppose you could just leave a gap in the track. I used a couple in the Wichita yard and hid the plastic joiners with ballast which works fine, but I didn't want to do that everywhere.
Yes, i didn't use plastic joiners. I super glued a thin piece of strene between the tracks and trimmed it. I see your point.
@@tas7997 Well, when you offer that kind of suggestion, that makes my complaint kinda whiny...LOL. I may have to consider that option again. I know I don't really like the Walthers bumpers because they seem to fall apart at the drop of a single grain of ballast...FINE GRAIN ballast...LOL.
