Poll results and work plan for 8/19/24--Gotta have more Gorge! Oh...and I got organized!
Usually on the Monday following my construction updates, I release the results of the poll conducted at the end of each update regarding which area of the layout my viewers would like to see me focus my efforts on next.
For this past weekend's poll, the viewers determined by majority vote that they would like to see more work done on the Royal Gorge Route! I will primarily continue work on the rockface carving and bridge installation. I will also try to more or less "complete" the tunnel portal area so there is one section of the layout that could pass for "done". It won't be done because I know I will end up fiddling with it in the future, but it will be totally painted, have some details added, and have ballasted track.
Thank you all for your participation, I'll see you in two weeks with the results of my efforts!

    The colors look really nice. My suggestion is that once you are happy with the colors, try a light brown or tan wash over the entire area to tie all of the colors together. Don't go too heavy with the wash, the goal is to try and give it a color that ties everything together without obscuring the other colors. You'll notice if you glance at your photo, there is one color that stands out. that is the color you want to use as your wash. You might also try to do it with pastels. Make a section of carved foam you use just for testing those kind of techniques. Also, after that is done, brush some gloss Mod Podge over the water seapage out of the rocks. Once again though, it is really looking great.

    Incredible job! Your classification yard blows my little 4x8 layout away. I like your idea of the power plant. I used to take CSX crews to Plant Bowen in Cartersville to dump trains. There was a big loop the trains would go around leading to a elevated truss over a pit with the conveyor system mounding coal for the boilers. They had trouble one day in the rain getting traction and I had to help them get a running start to get speed to make it up a very slight incline. I shadowed the train until it finally got leveled off enough to to continue. For about five minutes the second locomotive was jumping up in the rear every time the wheels slipped. Good luck with your project. You have your work cut out for you!

      @KandWRailroader our layout is either going to end up in shipping containers or the attic. A few houses here have basements. Mostly tho they are on piles. New builds are on concrete slabs. Looks like that layout is coming along really well! The Royal Gorge scenery looks like it's going to turn out great! I'm a sucker for HO scale Southern Pacific/Rio Grande so it's great to see a couple SP Dash 9s on the layout. I model Southern Pacific in the 1990s and, one day, I hope to model Tennessee Pass in 1996 just prior to the UP merger. I'm learning a lot about building a layout and what goes into it. I really appreciate your videos! One question I had is, do you plan on having the layout fully signaled in the distant future? That's one aspect of modeling I'm not familiar with and eager to learn more. I'm probably a little late, but I'm happy to vote for the Royal Gorge. I'm excited to see what the finished product looks like!

    • @KandWRailroader

      I will be excited to see your take on Tennessee Pass! I just love that area! (probably why I am modeling it). I just posted the poll results for this weekend, so you did just miss it, but you voted for the winner so you still got your way! I will be including signals but at this time, I don't plan to use them for anything more than details. Wiring up a signal system is not something that interests me. I might change my mind someday, but for now, that task seems too daunting. If I can get my signals to light up, I will consider that a win. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos and hope you find them helpful for your own layout. Good luck!

    The layout looks like it’s going to be great! The Atlas signals actually do change colors and are super easy to work with if you get Atlas signal decoders. They are very much plug and play and the block detection is pretty easy and straight forward with the Atlas system.

I think your gorge is looking really good. I love your water and scenery, looks very realistic! Thanks for the update. Just curious how wide is your narrowest benchwork? • @KandWRailroader
      @KandWRailroader 3 дні тому

      Thank you Linda! Your vote has been recorded! I really appreciate the comment about the water because I haven't even poured any yet, that's all just a base coat of paint! My benchwork varies in width from about 12" in the Lamar and Charleston Elevator areas to 24" everywhere else except for the Wichita yard which is 48" (a full sheet of plywood wide) across. I think 2'x4' modules for HO are pretty common because they are easy to handle bulk and weight-wise once fully built out, although you can probably go longer for yard areas because there won't be much scenery there. Good luck with your build!

      Wish I could claim it. I discovered it myself from another model railroad UA-camr. I think it is more cost effective than fabric but also a bit stiffer... you couldn't pleat it like curtains like I see on a lot of nice layouts. I'm not sure if I care about how nice it looks at this point though, I just like how it hides things from view. Eventually, the part that is stapled to the benchwork will be hidden by fascia for a cleaner look.

    I followed the Woodland Scenics Leppard print to get the basic paint on my rock castings. Take a look at that channel. We also used 1" pink foam cut as a vertical gusset at about 6-8 " apart for the base of a rock face then after that glue was dried we added windows screening hot glued to the gusset then added sculpted a mold over the screen with rock castings and carvings. Lighter weight quicker I think than stacking caulking stacking carving. And thus was for the Columbia River Gorge on the BN side of the river on the SP&S N scale layout of Rick Ernest it was only 2 to 6 inches deep for the whole bottom deck. You rough carve the uprights then glue the screen for base and go from there. Love the progress you made in one year. Keep up the great work and fantastic video's.

    • @KandWRailroader
      @KandWRailroader 5 днів тому

      Thanks for the tips! I had tried the method you mentioned in the past using the screen wire, and thought it worked great for building a general hill-type shape. I certainly won't argue about which method is quicker, but I don't feel like cutting and stacking the foam killed too much time. The carving will take a lot of time, but as much as I'm not a fan of art, I really love the carving part...very relaxing! The 2" was harder than the 1" just because of the difficulty of cutting through that thickness. The 1" went pretty quickly and I would have used it throughout if I had any left. At this point, I've only been using scraps leftover from covering the benchwork so it's basically been free...well as "free" as "sunk cost" can be anyway. Thank you for the compliment!

    It is coming along nicely.. as a suggestion to help clean up your workbench how about some draws beside your chair and possibly a mobile trolley with draws, or one of the plastic 3 draw units on wheels with a top to work from to put the scenery tools and paints etc onto so you can move it about from section to section and have everything handy as you work on different areas.. one draw for track related stuff, one draw for scenery and the other for building scenery items etc... and you could have a different one for track/buildings/building of scenery items like some of the items that you are building or soldering track etc.... I still think you are doing too much of the cutting and slicing of the foam.. in the pictures you show us the hills are more mountains with dirt and some smallish rocks with vegetation, not cliff faces...

      You are the second person to recommend a cart. I had fully intended to build some type of organizational set of shelves/drawers in the space next to my chair because it would be the perfect use of that space, but if I can find a commercially available example that fits there, AND can roll around, so much the better. As for your comment on the scenery, you are right. What I am actually modelling is different from the photographs, but that is simply because I haven't printed photographs of the locations on the Royal Gorge Route that I have decided to model. There are many places, especially nearer to the gorge bridge, where the tracks are laid right up against vertical, or near vertical, rock faces. Given my space constraints, I decided to model those areas to some degree, rather than what you see in the photos. I'll see if I can print up some photos that better represent what I am trying to accomplish. Not all of the foam I have laid will be cut into vertical cliffs...some areas will have more slope. I just wanted to make sure I could do the carving satisfactorily enough before proceeding further.

    I admire how interactive you are making your layout with all of us. I also applaud the progress you continue to make! On question as I watch the tour? Is there any way to bypass Wichita yard or does everything bypass through the yard?

    • @KandWRailroader
      @KandWRailroader 5 днів тому

      I'm glad you enjoy the polls because I enjoy them as much as you all. In the beginning they were used to help me focus because I was working all over the place, but never really accomplishing that much. Now they exist both as a focus for me, but also because I have a lot of subscribers that seem to comment on almost every update, they always have something nice to say or some great input to share, so why not include them in some small way on the build process? You folks are taking time out of your day to stop by and see what I've been up to for the last couple of weeks. It's the least I can do to provide some measure of inclusion in to how the layout gets built. It all has to get built at some point, and since 95% of the track is laid and works, I can still run trains over the whole layout, so it really makes no difference to me what I work on every two weeks. As a bonus, there have been several polls that have "forced" me to work on something that I otherwise would have put off for one reason or another and the Royal Gorge Route is a shining example. I was nervous about doing it before, and now I'm not! As for your question, I decided in the planning stage that I would not bypass trains through Wichita. Although there was room to install a wye, the wye itself would have made the rest of the yard throat trackage on both sides difficult to lay out in an efficient manner. Plus, given the prototypical operation that I was planning, trains to El Dorado from Wichita both originate and terminate in Wichita, so there was really no point from an operations perspective to have a "through" track. I wasn't interested in having continuous running on the upper level for the same reason. I do have the possibility for continuous running between the staging and middle levels, but I've yet to use it.

    • @adammcintosh8402
      @adammcintosh8402 5 днів тому

      That makes sense! Especially with both railroads interchanging traffic. And I agree, rather utilize the space for yard tracks etc opposed to a wye that would take up space and not fit your operating scheme. Appreciate the follow up! Look forward to the next update!

    Man your moving along great! I do have a suggestion for you. try to find a book by Dave Frary called "how to build realistic model railroad scenery" published by Model Railroader. It has invaluable information for creating all types of scenery and is well worth your money. Im sure it has helped countless model railroaders over the years. I believe he has a UA-cam channel also with great demos. I believe it would be well worth your time to check it out. Hope that helps and keep up the good work.
