Epilepsy is a group of neurological disorders characterized by epileptic seizures.[10][11] Epileptic seizures are episodes that can vary from brief and nearly undetectable to long periods of vigorous shaking.[1] These episodes can result in physical injuries including occasionally broken bones.[1] In epilepsy, seizures tend to recur and as a rule, have no immediate underlying cause.[10] Isolated seizures that are provoked by a specific cause such as poisoning are not deemed to represent epilepsy.[12] People with epilepsy in some areas of the world experience stigma due to the condition.[1]
The cause of most cases of epilepsy is unknown.[1] Some cases occur as the result of brain injury, stroke, brain tumors, infections of the brain, and birth defects, through a process known as epileptogenesis.[1][2][3] Known genetic mutations are directly linked to a small proportion of cases.[4][13] Epileptic seizures are the result of excessive and abnormal nerve cell activity in the cortex of the brain.[12] The diagnosis involves ruling out other conditions that might cause similar symptoms such as fainting and determining if another cause of seizures is present such as alcohol withdrawal or electrolyte problems. This may be partly done by imaging the brain and performing blood tests. Epilepsy can often be confirmed with an electroencephalogram (EEG), but a normal test does not rule out the condition.
Epilepsy that occurs as a result of other issues may be preventable. Seizures are controllable with medication in about 70% of cases. Inexpensive options are often available.[1] In those whose seizures do not respond to medication, then surgery, neurostimulation, or dietary changes may be considered Not all cases of epilepsy are lifelong, and many people improve to the point that treatment is no longer needed.
Normally brain electrical activity is non-synchronous.[2] Its activity is regulated by various factors both within the neuron and the cellular environment. Factors within the neuron include the type, number and distribution of ion channels, changes to receptors and changes of gene expression.[55] Factors around the neuron include ion concentrations, synaptic plasticity and regulation of transmitter breakdown by glial cells.[55][56]
    Epilepsy[edit]
The exact mechanism of epilepsy is unknown,[57] but a little is known about its cellular and network mechanisms. However, it is unknown under which circumstances the brain shifts into the activity of a seizure with its excessive synchronization.
In epilepsy, the resistance of excitatory neurons to fire during this period is decreased. This may occur due to changes in ion channels or inhibitory neurons not functioning properly. This then results in a specific area from which seizures may develop, known as a "seizure focus".Another mechanism of epilepsy may be the up-regulation of excitatory circuits or down-regulation of inhibitory circuits following an injury to the brain. These secondary epilepsies occur through processes known as epileptogenesis. Failure of the blood-brain barrier may also be a causal mechanism as it would allow substances in the blood to enter the brain.

Every video I've seen says Epilepsy is a disease. It's not a disease, it's a disorder. Finally one video agrees.

Life was grand as a toddler, going on weekend trips with my parents, playing with my friends and listening to grandma as she shared one inspiring story after another about the good old days. What more could a child ask for than the love and comfort of her family?
Surprising life quickly took a turn for the worst and that pathway I was destined to journey became rocky as traumatic obstacles crossed my life path and took me on a different journey. A journey, one no child should have to experience.
    The Beginning
At the age of five, I had contracted a sore throat and an ear infection. My mother had brought me to the doctor’s office that evening and the pediatrician had put me on penicillin and told my mother to have me rest in bed. No one thought much of it at the time.
I rested in bed and I was on the penicillin for about ten days. On the tenth night when she put me to bed, my lips were more red than usual. The next morning at about 8:00 A.M., my mother woke up because she heard unusual noises coming from my room that sounded like I was choking on my saliva. She walked into my bedroom to find me in my bed turning blue and having a grand mal seizure. This was the first time I ever experienced a seizure.

      How Epilepcare works
All the ingredients/extracts in the tablet, act on the body from day 1 and activate the cell memory by delivering appropriate oxygen to them. This in turn strengthens the brain cells making them strong and stronger after each dose. After the due course is complete, the patients’ brain becomes so strong that it never ceases and the patient leads a normal life again. It has been observed, that episodes of seizures have stopped from as early as day 7. Other effects such as memory loss, fatigue, sleeplessness or disturbed sleep, stress and depression are also cured with time taking the tablets as guided. Body becomes alert and vital strength is regained and visible effects are seen after 1-2 months of regular intake of Epilepcare. It is very important for Epileptic patients to stay out of /avoid stressful situations, many ingredients help the body to handle stress in a very efficient way so that the brain doesn’t sieze.

We agree that we think differently than others. ... This is what I'm interested in learning about. ... I am 57 years old, after a high fever for many days, I started having seizures. I was 13 then.

I was born with epilepsy and cerebral palsy. I have a twin brother, i was born first. My brother was born with no problems. I take phenytoin for my epilepsy, as a child I was on phenabarbatone, then at 14 i was put on Epilim 500mg. Which caused me to gain lots of weight. I went to live in Canada for a few years where I was taken off eperlim & switched to phenytoin. Which I still take today. As a child I had grand mal seizures, which doctors said I would grow out of. Which I did, but I now have petit mal. It' feels weird when I have it, i can hear all thats going on around me, but ppl and any noise, sound much louder, plus it feels like I'm floating on water. Before the seizure I get the smell like burnt toast. I can have a seizure at any time, night or day. Unpredictable. I feel a little confused when I come round, which lasts for a couple of minutes, then I'm back with you again. Usually a cup of tea helps me recover. I read a lot of blogs where people who shared their testimonies kept mentioning Anti-seizure Herbal medication. I searched for a website I just followed the email address of Doctor Patrick that was shared on these testimonies; I got lucky when I got a reply from Dr. Patrick. I followed his instruction, used Herbal Medicine in less than 2 months, I was already cure because of the changes I was seeing. Within a period of 5 months, I was cured totally forever. I went back to my neurologist, I was checked up and marked epilepsy free. If you need his help you can Contact this herbal doctor via his email herbalmedicalhome@gmail.com and WhatsApp connection is +2348102558553 for help.

I’ve been diagnosed with epilepsy just under 2 years now. I’ve never had a seizure, what happens to me is, I have a intense Déjà vu moment that lasts about 10 seconds, I do get a feeling/warning I’m going to have it(sometimes doesn’t transpire) although they are weird and off putting, I’m alway completely with it and can continue a conversion or whatever I happen to be doing. I just can not find any info on line or people with similar cases to me, I am currently taking 2x 50mg tablets of Vimpat a day (half of what was originally prescribed, by accident) and they have reduced these moment down to once or twice a month (down from 4 or 5 times a week) I’d love if somebody could point me to more info on my current condition, or tell me exactly what I have. Thank you

Epilepsy is manifesting in the very young (eg, cerebral palsy and mental retardation) and diseases of the elderly (eg, clinically detected stroke and Alzheimer dementia) increase an individual’s risk of epilepsy by more than 10-fold .
Some regions of the brain, for example, the hippocampus, entorhinal cortex, and amygdala (which constitute the mesial or middle temporal lobe), appear to be more vulnerable to the epileptogenic process.
Abnormalities in synaptic transmission and neuronal excitability,voltage-gated ion channels, neurotransmitters, neuronal proteins and trophic factors, and alterations in gene expression within neurons.

Seizures are episodes of temporary brain dysfunction secondary to abnormal electrical activity.
approximately 10% of individuals at some point in their lives. Approximately 25% of seizures have a clearly identifiable, temporally associated cause. These seizures, labeled acute symptomatic seizures or provoked seizures, do not have a tendency to recur, unless the underlying condition returns.

I had epilepsy since I was 14 months. In 2011 an EEG proved I was in remission. I have had no medication since 19 /7/2012. Having said that, I have an abnormality on the temple on the left side of my brain. I get an hallucination of various past events, some upsetting. Such as someone banging like hell on my door, my late husband cold and wet at the door calling me, my dad bringing a parcel to my daughter on her first day at school saying, give her that, I may never see her again (I had my daughter at 30, but my dad died when I was 20). Is this normal.?

Thanks, I've been to so many parties where people try to force me to drink booze. When I try to explain to them that I'm medically not allowed to do it because of my epilepsy, they have no idea what epilepsy is and don't understand thing when I explain it to them. P.s., the reason why I have it is because I was born with a hole in my broka area; which VITAMINS D category would that be in? 🤔

If there is hyponatremia how will neutrons discharge? Na needs to get into cells to depolarise them and get them to discharge further signals right? If there isn't enough Na in the first place how will they depolarise and discharge excessively?
