    I just love how Columbo is so dynamically all over the place with the killer here. He knows the guy is from NYC so the usual charm won't necessarily work. This is their second meeting but the Lt makes it abundantly to the killer that this is a shakedown. He's getting info but he's really badgering the guy. Pushing his buttons. It's not friendly and he wants the guy to know it.

      Any defense attorney will tell you to never answer one single question. Not one. Say no comment and lawyer up, no matter how uninvolved you are. You have the right to remain innocent. Anything you say can AND WILL be used AGAINST you in a court of law. In other words, they will twist your words. Say nothing. Ever. It’s not your job to “just help them do their job”. The calculation Columbo was doing (his "real estate rule of thumb") consisted of just multiplying the yearly taxes ($18000) times the avg mortgage (in those days) of 40 years: 18000 x 40 = 720,000. So, if the actual house price was $750,000, then 750000/40 = $18,750 in actual yearly taxes. I always wondered how Columbo did that....now I know!

    Everyone notes that the bad guys on Columbo are foolish to talk to a homicide detective. It would be interesting to know if rich bad guys don’t immediately direct detectives to their lawyers.
    There are several reasons the bad guys make this mistake. First, the show would be boring if they didn’t. Second, the idea is that the bad guys on Columbo usually have HUGE egos, so, they think they can outsmart Columbo. Third, Columbo is VERY clever about making sure the suspect feels like Columbo is just an eccentric guy who doesn’t consider them a suspect, but slowly but surely, it becomes obvious over the course of the episode - when it’s too late. Fourth, it takes guts to tell a detective that you are taking the fifth because it makes you look guilty, and most of the bad guys are convinced they committed the perfect crime.

    I never really understood this scene, and for the most part it was added later after the episode ran short, so it was written in after the whole show was already shot. You can tell because Alex's hair is cut in this scene but not in any other scene. In the end it does seem rather random and really doesn't amount to anything.... unless. Might it possible that Columbo was not overwhelmed at the home as he has been to them before in the last season. My guess is, this scene is Columbo trying to ascertain how Alex is doing right now based entirely on the fact that last night two people randomly came to the murder house, the ex-lover who was distraught, and Alex who was collected. My guess this scene isn't random, but Columbo making sure his gut instinct is right. Alex is very calm over someone committing suicide, never asks Columbo about it, nor seems distraught over why it happened. This very scene is Columbo knowing Alex is the murderer all because Alex never said one thing about the suicide during the whole scene.

    seems like such a waste of time this scene but it is great because Columbo is showing the murderer that he knows something is not right and that he is going to pursue him. Very nice.

      @javierruiz3018 7 років тому +20

      That has no sense. The suicide note was writen in a writing machine.
      I think the point of this scene is to let us know that Columbo knows he has so much to lose, because as a Orchestra director, he can´t afford a house like that. So Columbo figures out that his wife is the one who has money. Benedict CANT lose his wife. So Columbo knows that Benedict has a motive to kill that girl. The girl was his lover, and she was going to tell that to his wife.

    • @johnmanier7968

      Agree. This scene was added later, but the point is to show Columbo knows the motive behind the murder, and now the murderer knows that Columbo knows.

      @@javierruiz3018 Nope. Nope. Nope. This scene was shot much later and added on after filming was finished because the studio wanted a longer episode to make more money through advertising. This is why JC haircut is shorter. it is a nice scene but just padding and unnecessary. You are reading waaaay to much into it.

    Columbo said he makes "$11,000 a year"...that's something like $5.10 an hour.
    This episode was made in 1972 and the minimum wage back then was $1.60. So he was making a little over 3 times the minimum wage.
    That sounds a little low. In 1972 an LAPD Lieutenant probably made $18,000, plus that much more in overtime and weekends. No doubt he received some righteous bonuses for solving murders right and left.

He likes some of these people. Sometimes it’s a setup but not always. And sometimes it’s both. Kind of like in basic instinct. He said he loved her but was still gonna nail her! Ironic choice of words by the way.
