Everyone notes that the bad guys on Columbo are foolish to talk to a homicide detective. It would be interesting to know if rich bad guys don’t immediately direct detectives to their lawyers. There are several reasons the bad guys make this mistake. First, the show would be boring if they didn’t. Second, the idea is that the bad guys on Columbo usually have HUGE egos, so, they think they can outsmart Columbo. Third, Columbo is VERY clever about making sure the suspect feels like Columbo is just an eccentric guy who doesn’t consider them a suspect, but slowly but surely, it becomes obvious over the course of the episode - when it’s too late. Fourth, it takes guts to tell a detective that you are taking the fifth because it makes you look guilty, and most of the bad guys are convinced they committed the perfect crime.

Might it possible that Columbo was not overwhelmed at the home as he has been to them before in the last season. My guess this scene isn't random, but Columbo making sure his gut instinct is right. The minute Cassavetes...signed that Envelope.....it was All Over. lol!
How in the hell so ?! The suicide note was typed. Columbo probably legitimately wanted his autograph even knowing he was a killer. He does it in numerous episodes. He likes some of these people. Sometimes it’s a setup but not always. And sometimes it’s both. Kind of like in basic instinct. He said he loved her but was still gonna nail her! Ironic choice of words by the way.
My grandparents bought a one story ranch house, no basement, on a back street in Coronado CA with a front yard and no back yard in the 70s for under $100k in the 70s. By the time they passed away in the mid 2000s, it was worth over a million dollars.
At 5:20 mark, when he writes his name, he writes John Cassavetes. Look carefully you can tell, and he crosses the T at the end. And Falk is about to laugh and they cut.... All hail the greatest. Columbo!
Indiana KJD Sorry to break it to you Sherlock, but the character's name is Alex Bendict which actually has a letter 'T' all the way at the end.
@@FIREBRAND38 - Spoil sport. It's all elementary Watson, but Agreed, he does write Benedict..
If you didn't notice also. When Columbo and the murderer was talking. Watch Colombos hand with the cigar. Sometimes it's in his right hand and the next view the cigar disappears. And than reappears again. Over and over
The opening lines of this clip could easily be from a nervous school boy chatting up a school girl.
"Columbo" always allowed his suspects to relax, ease back to a normal state and rise above suspicion. Then, "Got ya'! (just one more thing)
I always wondered why in this episode, with all that money, why did Benedict not just pay a hit man to do the killing for him.
Wow! That house at 0:07 looks EXACTLY like the governor's mansion on that 1980's sitcom "Benson."
Hey FYI a U.S auction company called ‘Profiles in History ‘ are auctioning Columbo’s complete costume. Lot 748 includes suit, pants, tie and raincoat the lot for auction estimate $15000 - 20000 AND also include a Columbo LAPD business card with his name Frank!!
Ahhhh The good old days, when you could walk into a neighbors house or a strangers home and just strike a match and light up a big stogie and nobody would think anything about it.
Hmm, why'd I get this feeling he didn't really want an autograph...
There was another episode where he gets someone to sign his name to his wife, "Mrs. Columbo."
If you're trying to quit smoking, it's best not to watch Columbo! LOL
He considers quitting in the episode he directed--the one with the architect.
Ah, so this is why Mr. Myagi was managing that apartment complex when Daniel meet him…his previous employer was arrested for murder.
“Wax on, wax off..”
Wish I could find this whole episode..a classic!!!
@@tomsullivan6032 you can now. Full episode on UA-cam
Love this show, but did anyone else notice that Columbo's cigar switches hands between shots? First saw it around the 4:30 mark
$11,000 in 1971 works out at salary of $83,000 today
The house, furniture and staff works out at nearly $6.8 million.
Do watch the movie "husbands" starting these two greats+other great actor Ben Gazzara.
John Cassavetes......Legend.
This scene had to be added later because obviously John Cassavetes has had a hair cut here, it’s longer in the beginning of the episode and longer towards the end
❤ amo esse seriado pena que não é legendado...As segundas feiras assisto na Rede Brasil...top...
😂dang you are missing the best of the content. 😢
AMAZON 99 hours of Colombo for 127 bucks. 35 years all. I’ll have them tommorow remastered new no commercials. Greatest!!!!!!
With all the episode's they made they show the same ones ( about 8) over and over again here in the UK, in the 5 USA Channel. Drives me nuts!!
Purchasing the rights to air the show costs money. Each episode varies in cost on how to purchase, to British stations including 5USA have to budget which is the cheapest episode to air. I think in Britain, Columbo broadcasting rights are split between 5USA and ITV
Hey! I'ts Mr. Miyagi from "Karate Kid" ......."Cuffs on - Cuffs off!"
Those stairs❤️❤️
Colombo couldn't afford to live in that house if it was given to him. 😂
Columbo didn't notice that the suspect on the steps magically made his cigarette disappear. also as they switch back and forth looking at Columbo and then Alex, Alex's arms are in front of him the suddenly they are behind him.
MikeHunt ...the montage stupidity...

I don’t remember this episode. Would it be possible to see the whole episode? Thank you.
yea it's called torrent
I miss the days when you could walk into someone’s house and light up a cigar without asking
Columbo could never find anything in his pockets except matches to light his cigar
Ah, Colombo, if u could have that in a sleeping pill. When they show it on tv i record it because i fall asleep immediately after it starts, and then the whole week i have a perfect sleeping pill - i put recording on and after 10-15 minutes i m asleep.. go columbo!
