I have read that Larry Shinoda (who came up with the Boss 302) had a hand in its design. That Detroit 'Iron Symphony' providing the soundtrack is icing on the cake!
Had one years ago. 335 Cummins and 13 over. Big Holset turbo and pump worked over button and spring. Had to watch the pyrometer close no charge air cooler but it would run with the 350 big cams and 360 cats. Once she was wound up I could outrun many. Left a few butt hurt large cars behind. Looking back it was sure fun in those days.
My first truck driving job I drove a 1978 Jimmy , 318 with a 10speed. No a/c , no radio, no power steering, spring ride. Drive it like you're mad at it, that's the secret to driving the 8v71 or you could just slam the door shut on your hand; that works too. I'm still driving truck after all these years, I'm 61 y.o. not in the best of health but I'm planning on driving another 4-5 years.

I had a duplicate GMC Astro but with a 6V-92TA and 7 speed Spicer. You could just pull it into 1st without the clutch and off you go. Try driving the 8V-92TA upshift at 1800 down shift at 1400.
It sets the truck brakes. So the yellow knob supplies air to the blue and red knob, and pulling the yellow knob would park both the truck and the trailer. Pulling the blue and red knob separately would park the tractor and the trailer separately.
That’s a great looking and sounding Jimmy. The only thing that would make it sound better would be a 53 foot Wilson trailer full of corn behind it. Neat truck. Is it a 71 or 92 series?

This one is an 8-71T. "2 gallons of oil every 600 miles" ?!!?..... sounds like someone should have had enough sense to rebuild/reseal the blower.... a Lonnng, time ago... instead of letting it go, and necessitating a full rebuild or a reman.
Old 2 stroke Detroit hands talk like an old artillery Sgt. They get used to having to talk at 3/4 yell and can't hear worth a damn. What? Being a career partsman at a Volvo and GMC heavy duty dealership, we had to endure those old Detroit 2 strokes having the rack adjusted on them right outside the shop window. They take the exhaust manifolds off and tune it by adjusting the length of the flame coming out the exhaust port. IT TAKES A WHILE, SO YOU FIND YOURSELF YELLING. It's kind of humorous looking back on it.
David Keeton.... Quote... " They take the exhaust manifolds off and tune it by adjusting the length of the flame coming out the exhaust port." The Astro had the best outward vision of any cab period. All that glass, the seating position, how could you miss anything? The only other cab that would allow you really good vision ( my opinion ) is the Ford Louisville style.
He says it's a shaky go pro mount. No, not really. If you are in the driver's seat, that is air ride, it smooths things out, a lot. Ride in the solidly mounted passenger seat or sit in the bunk and your whole body vibrates and your eyes rattle in your head just like it shows. When pulling a trailer the back of the passenger seat slaps you in the back every time the trailer goes over a bump. The Reyco suspension rides pretty rough. Whether it's a 318 or 350 or 430, that screaming Detroit sound will stay with you. You know what I mean. What?
David Keeton.... So true, and for those of us who remember Solid mounted driver seats.... Yeah!! PS: An 8-71T in this one... factory rating of 350 at 2100.

Pre-selecting the splitter, as you're doing in this video, is a sure way to a "back-half" rebuild on that 10 speed.... especially if that's the way you drive it, when loaded... not to mention your usage of the throttle.
Pre-selecting the range splitter won't hurt it, but pre select the splitter, and you will eventually wear the fork and sliding clutch in "the back half of a Road ranger.
@@Skipperj... Hello, Clifton... thanks for your reply. Yes, you're absolutely correct in regards to the splitter. It's been "a while" since I've retired... and I had "2nd thoughts" after I wrote in my comment to you... and sincerely meant to go back and correct what I wrote with regards to "pre-selecting". Myself, in my 52+ years of OTR trucking... the vast majority of those years was as an independent O/O, and I ordered each truck that I owned with "sticks" - dbl O, 6x4's for the heavy haul that I was doing. Prior to going on my own, all the rigs that I drove for others, all had various types of "sticks". I have tried sgl sticks, from time to time... just never liked them, and I could out-pull just about every other heavy hauler in steep gradients - versus their single stick set-ups.... but, to be honest.. my nearly 800hp under the hood (800+ in my last KW [1981, ext'd hood W923]) probably "helped" a bit as well. I loved my V12 Detroits... great memories, and they Never let me down, Ever! I had a 6-110T that I was going to "build" and install in another ext'd hood KW, but fuel prices were climbing and rates at the time were stagnant & down... so I sold the engine, and been regretting it ever since. One of the few sgl sticks I ever drove, was for a friend of mine.. for two weeks, while he had to be "off" of his feet. It was a nearly new Astro (1975) with a NA V12 and a dbl over 12513 box.... he had it set up, after he took delivery of it.. with Green tag N90 injectors, 2 degrees adv. and opened to 2,350 loaded rpms.... not sure of the rears, but with 24.5 rubber, in 2nd over... it would bury the speedometer at about 1,875 on the tach. I liked the "wraparound" dash, but definitely Not all that windshield glass.. went too low for my liking, and too much sunlight/heat in the summer. One thing I've Never liked about GM's class 8 trucks... was their incessant use of "pickup truck" sized steering wheels, in terms of wheel "thickness"... wayyy too "thin" and fingers would cramp if you had Large hands... Ridiculous!!... that, and their lack of desire to make available any wheelbase options past about 220". How long have you had yours? What are your long term plans for it... if any?
I am delivering a sermon to you 🙏😊 please read Consistently Pray for forgiveness, guidance in a good (positive) direction, and for help against evil. Pray to be saved from hell (whatever that may be). Pray for your friends and your family too, it only takes a minute or so/less at a time to pray. Do it and your life will slowly get better, or maybe quickly. It probably just depends on you and the kind of person you are/have been. Don't wait until its too late and you have to suffer the consequences of built up bad karma from immoral acts/unrepented sins. Maybe together we can help make the world a better place by changing ourselves for the better, and changing things around us for the better. And addressing/thanking the CREATOR, LORD GOD at the beginning and end of your prayers would be a good idea 😊 Or just be my friend if you don't want to say the prayer 😄 I'm trying to help you get right with the LORD 🙏 Amen. I have worded a short prayer for you to say if you are not sure what words to use, it may not be the best but here it is 😊 '' CREATOR, LORD GOD, Please forgive me and my friends and my family for our immoral acts, please help guide us in a positive direction and please help us against evil. Please save us from Hell and have mercy on our souls. Thank you CREATOR, LORD GOD. Amen. '' Please say this at least once a day for at least a month, do it longer if you want to and can 🙏 You should prostrate yourself if you don't want to do spoken prayer, or do both 🙏😊 Please worship the LORD GOD and not any idol. Please put your hands together 🙏 bow your head and say this prayer: "CREATOR, LORD GOD, please know that I worship you and not any idols. Thank you for everything CREATOR, LORD GOD. Amen" Say ' Om Namah Shivaya ' out loud or in your head 108 times, or try to do it 1008 times 😊 try to do it everyday if you want repeat this aloud for as long as you want to, try to do it for like an hour a day or say it in a prayer "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner" You can also say this prayer once a day or repeat it aloud as many times as you would like to: "Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen." Thessalonians 5:16-18 "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 🙏🙏🙏🙏 Philippians 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." "O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You!" Repeat this aloud at least 3 times or as many as you want, do it everyday if you can I apologize for all the words 😊 I know how it may look
Definitely need some lessons on shifting .. Getting way to big a hurry. Stop floating gears. Slow down and learn what a clutch is. A true veteran driver is smooth changing not fast . Speed is not a option in a truck. Its smooth and precise transition in the gearbox and driving. That will make maneuvering the truck and load very well.
As a 40yr retired driver I can honestly say that is not how to drive a truck. Absolutely Rediculous changing gears so rapidly its not a damn race car. Alot of abusive driving.
The late 70's early 80's Jimmys had a very distinctive sound. You'd hear one coming and you KNEW what it was!
Back then, a friend of mine's father drove one of those. He said to just keep rowing the shifter and you'd find a gear eventually...
When in doubt, keep with the old adage: If you can't find'em, grind'em.

It's a good noise I love it but if you go from jimmy to cat you just feel like it's only half as fast.
Engage "Power Service Mode".
Pre-selecting the splitter, as you're doing in this video, is a sure way to a "back-half" rebuild on that 10 speed.... especially if that's the way you drive it, when loaded... not to mention your usage of the throttle.
I've since learned how to use the splitter. And no, I don't drive like this all the time. I was just having fun.
Pre-selecting the range splitter won't hurt it, but pre select the splitter, and you will eventually wear the fork and sliding clutch in "the back half of a Road ranger.
I drove a 1974 Titan with the 8V-71T (350hp). I loved it for running produce back and forth from NY to Montreal.
What are your long term plans for it... if any?
ASTRO MONSTER , NOTHING LIKE DETROIT POWER
I drove one wasn’t impressed at all !
Sounds like a broken engine = Detroit Diesel. Horrible.
I am delivering a sermon to you 🙏😊 please read
Consistently Pray for forgiveness, guidance in a good (positive) direction, and for help against evil.
And addressing/thanking the CREATOR, LORD GOD at the beginning and end of your prayers would be a good idea 😊
Or just be my friend if you don't want to say the prayer 😄
I'm trying to help you get right with the LORD 🙏
Amen.
I have worded a short prayer for you to say if you are not sure what words to use, it may not be the best but here it is 😊
'' CREATOR, LORD GOD,
Please forgive me and my friends and my family for our immoral acts, please help guide us in a positive direction and please help us against evil. Please save us from Hell and have mercy on our souls. Thank you CREATOR, LORD GOD. Amen. ''
Please say this at least once a day for at least a month, do it longer if you want to and can 🙏
You should prostrate yourself if you don't want to do spoken prayer, or do both 🙏😊 Please worship the LORD GOD and not any idol.
Please put your hands together 🙏 bow your head and say this prayer:
"CREATOR, LORD GOD, please know that I worship you and not any idols. Thank you for everything CREATOR, LORD GOD. Amen"
Say ' Om Namah Shivaya ' out loud or in your head 108 times, or try to do it 1008 times 😊 try to do it everyday if you want
repeat this aloud for as long as you want to, try to do it for like an hour a day or say it in a prayer "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner"
You can also say this prayer once a day or repeat it aloud as many times as you would like to:
"Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death, Amen."
Thessalonians 5:16-18
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." 🙏🙏🙏🙏
Philippians 4:6-7
"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
"O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You!" Repeat this aloud at least 3 times or as many as you want, do it everyday if you can
I apologize for all the words 😊 I know how it may look
That wasn't that terrorizing
Fucking awesome, i love cabovers 👍👍👍👍👍👍🍻
Definitely need some lessons on shifting .. Getting way to big a hurry. Stop floating gears. Slow down and learn what a clutch is. A true veteran driver is smooth changing not fast . Speed is not a option in a truck. Its smooth and precise transition in the gearbox and driving. That will make maneuvering the truck and load very well.
As a 40yr retired driver I can honestly say that is not how to drive a truck. Absolutely Rediculous changing gears so rapidly its not a damn race car. Alot of abusive driving.
