Bad value? It's TERRIBLE value... Nearly doubling the price of the XX80 series card in just one generation is absolutely outrageous.
Pretty clear Nvidia priced their new 40 series as if the crypto boom was in full bloom. It isn't... Essentially, Nvidia wanted to cut the scalper middle-men out, and become the scalpers themselves.

Wall street analysis I recently read said Apple has conditioned the market to relate $1000+ to quality, and now others are jumping on the bandwagon. If you make 50,000 items cause that's all you can make, price them at $700, and they sell out, they will probably sell out at a $1000 as well. And companies like customers with deep pockets. Again, if they sell out at $1000+ the guy willing to spend $700 and complains, well they just don't want him to be a customer. This is also how free enterprise, capitalism and free market works, and unfortunately people and companies take advantage of it. If you make a steak knife set in the US, sell it for $69 (make it $39) and make a decent profit, move that to china where it costs $3, they don't lower the price to keep the same profit margins, they keep the price the same to maximize their margins. As long as people are willing to pay these prices, and the supply is somewhat limited (they have to buy capacity from Samsung, TSMC, etc) and they sell out, well I think not only are these prices here to stay, they will be tested at higher levels. Remember, scalpers were selling these things for $3000+ and struggling to get more, there is room for prices to go higher. The real wild card is crypto mining, demand dropped a lot from the PoS, but how much? 10%? 50%? 70%? I know miners and gamers spending $3500 for a GPU cause "they have to be in the game" and they got the money. If they don't sell out and sit on shelves, the prices will drop and drop. Instead of competition dropping prices to be competitive, they are matching prices, that is a sign of supply being too low for demand.

Remember, not just overall value matter, overall efficiency also matters. Even 7900 XTX can still sip lower power consumption in typical gaming than TBP listed, under normal setup. Remember too much price increase for teeny tiny performance increase, or increase too big power consumption for last bit of clock speed and performance, is NOT peak efficiency and value. The best combination is to be if you can get 95% of last gen performance while consuming over 50% less TDP, this is peak efficiency. RDNA 3 is built like Max Q on desktop. Focusing on peak overall efficiency. Maybe future GPU I would like to see AD104 performance but sipping WAY less power TDP. Like 90% of performance on both ray traced and rasterization but consuming ONLY 75-105W, and 99.999% performance using only 175W. Remember Zen 4 performance gain at 65W is 75%?

Spot on in all your conclusions. AMD should also lower prices of RDNA3 at least a 10% - but I expect them to do it sooner or later. Nvidia may have a large amount of Ampere chips but they also have a race against time because when mid-high SKUs of RDNA3 (7800, 7700) come into play it is game over for them and its Ampere stock. And also let's not forget cards from mining rigs will still be coming in putting even more pressure. It will take a very 'generous' approach from Nvidia to manage their inventory surplus.

Absolutely not gonna happen. Nvidia and amd have monopolies on the GPU market. The fact that amd didn't join Nvidia in abusing said monopoly is a miracle in itself. Amd won't drop their prices. Nvidia will likely, but not until.they have squeezed as much money out of consumers as possible. Unfortunately people are still dumb enough to buy at these prices, 4090 sold 150k units in the first couple weeks, and 3000 series are still selling at ABOVE MSRP 2 years later. Nvidia is smart because if they lower the price, people will start buying thinking it's a deal and not realizing it's still way overpriced. I'm sure there's a business term for that, but nonetheless people are still iffy about buying used, as we see used markets (at least in the us) are not worth it. Comparing previous MSRPs is not an effective metric because it ignores market demand. Sure the 3080 had an msrp of $700, but at that price scalpers swooped in and actually sold them for hundreds of dollars more. The msrp of the 3080 was a market failure in economic terms because the demand was far higher than the supply at msrp. Because of that, scalpers could comfortably take advantage of that and extract the additional profit from the cards. The reality is the higher msrp is a market correction.

I can't believe people are buying the 3060; it's a few hundred dollars cheaper than the 3070. And so on. You can always price creep to a better card. The fact is, some people want a 3080, not a 3090, even though some 3080s cost more than the cheapest 3090s. The vast majority of people aren't going to be able to actually take advantage of the 4090, unless they're doing 3d modelling or similar workloads, or maybe VR. Paying 400 extra dollars for performance you can't concievably use doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I think people just hear this price creep argument and repeat it without thinking for a second about what performance they want and/or need and what it costs in cards currently available.

    1. Sharing same fate as 3070ti - never released
    2. 4080 12G would offer over 50perc upgrade over 3070, which would fit Nvidia Pascal moment narrative or real generational upgrade, at 499USD it would offer both great performance improvement and also more memory, as 3070 8G has kind basic mem capacity for modern gpu
(if 4080 16G was 1000USD and 4080 12G is 1/3 worse on specs, than it had be 700USD max)
    3. Die size of 4080 12G is lot smaller than one found on 3070, far closer to that one on 3060
4.Bad early sales of 4080 16G show probably both bad reviews effect, better say effect of bad value, but also ceiling at which people wish to spend for just high end gaming gpu

The reason why Nvidia could charge $1500 for the 3090, was because it was the only card with enough vRAM. Customers still bought the 3090 and Nvidia knew they would becuase the 2080 Ti sold like hot-cakes. The fact customers payed inflated prices during mining, gave Nvidia incentive to charge more.
The 4090 is considered a bargain by many. The 4080 is comparably the same less cost vs the same less performance vs the 4090. (Leaning in favour of the 4090.)

Big improvements in every area almost every generation; and they've gone from phone +web browser in the first iphone, to now also camera, GPS navigator, facetime/Skype/zoom terminal, ipod, legit web browser, payments wallet, basically an all in one solution. Seen from that perspective, the increase in price seems fair.
Graphics cards have gone from gaming/3d devices to that plus crypto mining. But nothing else. Improvements in performance are to be expected year over year, for the same price. What Nvidia is trying to push is not really justified imo. They can get away with it, but come half a year they'll have to maybe let the prices go down somewhat.

They also made the 4090 as the only choice to buy for performance that makes sense as compared to 4080. Definitely on nVidia’s plan but better still (for them) they used a 70 class die to make the 4080 rather than a cut down 90 die!!!!
This explains why the coolers seem complete overkill on the 4080 as probably they were originally specified a wattage level to the AIB’s and FE builders that assumed it would be a cut down 90 but later decided they could get away with what would have been a 70 die which doesn’t use as much power hence the discrepancies on stated max power vs actual on the 4080!!!!
nVidia now getting $1200 for a $500 chip. The recent increase in 30xx series card prices shows that nVidia’s tactics are working so instead of being 20% over priced they are now 30% overpriced (eg $380-$450 for a two year old card with MRSP of $329???). Yes their turnover might be down but I suspect their percentage margins are not.

When people complain that die size got smaller (even though performance and thermals increased), it reminds me of a saying in the audiophile world: use your equipment to listen to music; don't use music to listen to your equipment. If you're playing a game at 4k with high frame rate and ray tracing, but you're salty about having a smaller die size, what are you doing? AMD is using chiplets, and you're salty about a smaller unified die.
It'd be nice if you were transparent about what the performance percentages are based on. Are these just raster numbers? Do they include DLSS? What about frame generation? When you say the "performance increase is quite average," it sounds like you're ignoring a pretty important feature of the card. Where all of these percentages calculated from the same benchmarks? The same games? The same resolution? WIthout knowing that, these numbers are absolutely meaningless.
The odd thing is that other reviewers have looked at this objectively and come to a somewhat different conclusion. According to Techspot, the cost per frame at MSRP at 4k is better than the 4090, 6950xt, 3080ti, and 3090, but worse than 3070ti, 3080, and 6800xt. Its price/performance dips once looking at current prices, being about on par with the 3080ti, but those prices are likely to change, so it may get better or worse. However, you used MSRP, and by MSRP, 4080's cost to performance, once you consider the entire card and not just rasterization, is pretty much in the middle of the pack. It's not as amazing as some of the lower cards, but not as egregious as the higher end cards from last gen. Calling it "ridiculously bad value" isn't an objective conclusion. It's clickbait. There are cases where the 4080 is a terrible value (such as for 1080p gaming), but you didn't even bother making that argument. In your bar graph, you clearly have other tabs for different settings (I can't read German, but "ray tracing" is there). Yet you don't compare value in those other settings. Very odd.

Talk about computers, that is what you know. You are clueless on economics, your MSRP was correct on what the 3080 released at, but just around a year ago you could not get one for much less than 2000 USD, by that standard, it was a huge price cut. The 3090 Ti averages around 1300 USD but has been on sale for around 1100 USD, the 4080 has higher performance and offers new features. Another thing people keep saying is "XX80 cards SHOULD be", says who? What is an XX80 card? It is whatever Nvidia says it is. Thanks to the virus, inflation, miners, supply chain, scalpers GPUs over 1000 USD seems reasonable to the consumer. And before you can say "But the mining craze is over..." the effects of it are not. Nvidia and AMD are sitting on a lot of cards that have higher specs for mining, they are sitting on silicone they had to order for a demand that is no longer there, but to cut to the most basic of basics in economics "Something is worth, what someone else will buy it for" and 4080 is sold out on the major online retailers so people ARE buying it, and as long as that is the case Nvidia has no incentive to lower the price, in fact, they would be stupid to do so and gamers, in the end, would be worse off because profits lead to better and faster designs, profits lead to new plants, profits enable discounts. And I would not count on AMD to ride in on its white horse to save the poor gamers from Nvidias greed -they are in the same boat and are going to charge as much as they can as well, their current pricing is just as absurd, only less than Nvidia and hints that the cards are not as good as AMD fans are thinking they are.

MSRP is not set by whiners on UA-cam, it is set by the company -Nvidia, and it can (and did) change because Nvidia and its partners decided why let the scalpers make all the profit and still be sold out. Many Nvidia products are still OVER their MSRP still, though most are close and high-end cards are under. That is what happens when they set a price below the market demand, they sell out and you still do not get one -except at market value from scalpers. IF they priced 4080 at 800 USD you still would not get one at that price.
If scalpers and resellers bought all the online merchants' stock you have proved my point it is worth the 1200 USD or more because they are certainly not going to pay 1200 and sell it for 800.
