    I can't believe that of 44 thousand watchers only 419 of us appreciated this by giving a thumbs up, folk today want everything for nothing and still don't want to give any thanks or appreciation.

    Cool! Published on my birthday!!
    It's interesting to see how it works. Usually you can't see what goes on underneath because the CD is blocking the view.

    Loved this. Just recently started to fix my array of old faulty CD players. Thanks for the detail - like when the grease was used, you said what grease was used. SUbbed Cheers.

      All these types of transport, use generic Molykote grease, either pink or white in colour.
      It's not Lithium but Molybdenum. lithium grease should be avoided as it can attack some plastics making them yellow and brittle over time.

    Do you have any experience with the Harmon Kardon CDR 2 recorders? A common failure is the left CD player will fail to read the TOC. Mine will move to the home position and try and focus but can't read the TOC. I've cleaned the lens, relubed the rails, oiled the spindle motor and even tried bumping the current up on the laser a bit. I can see the Sanyo sfp151 laser light up, maybe it's just weak. Anyway, I enjoy watching your vids, keep 'em coming.

    Good video. I would do one thing. Normally servicing is not done with the unit powered so I would post a notice to NOT to look into the top of the laser lens when the unit is powered.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  3 роки тому

      Why? The laser is NOT going to hurt your eyes unless you do something stupid like try to view it with optical instruments and manage to focus it on your retnia. The beam is focused on the disk surface which is only a few mm from the lens. After that it diffuses. All the service manuals say to observe the laser from 12" or more. If someone is dumb enough to stick their eyeball on the lens then they deserve to have a permanent black spot in their vision. (Yes that is what happens as I know a guy that was in the hologram business and he one time lasered his eye when a reflection got him. He was left with a permanent floater in one eye. Mind you he was working with a large carbon dioxide laser at the time. Lasers need to be taken seriously. I once looked into one, but it was being operated by a skilled surgeon. I walked into the clinic blind as a bat and walked out with 20:20 vision and a much lighter wallet!

      Check your ground at the head shell. On most duals they have a removable head shell. You just push back on the little metal lifter on the side of the head shell. That will release the lower part of the head shell where the cartridge is mounted. Those spring loaded pins that connect the head shell to the tone arm oxidize and cause many problems, and need to be cleaned with a good cleaner like nutrol or deoxit.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому +1

      It is just lithium grease, and you can get it at most electronic component distributers.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому +2

      Silicone grease will work too. This is lithium grease and I use it because that is what I have on hand. Mitsubishi supplied this grease with their pinch roller assy to repair their VCRs that originally had that black graphite grease that gummed up, and broke parts.Yes it is safe on plastics.

    A simple one for a change :-), ive seen too many drive belts go floppy in cd units.
    Also quite a few pc cd/dvd drives have belt problems, but most seem reliable, its laser death in p.c ones.
    Optical storage seems a good idea, but the lasers give up the ghost too early, a waste of the electronics on the main board, the pcb's often work fine.
    The upsetting ones are the early quality units with a laser assembly that swings out in an ark, a non stepped linear magnetic field servo, its a real shame when the laser goes in those :-(.
    Dam ebay sellers, cant trust people, thats a shame :-(.

    Did the thing you bought using PP have "Pay after Delivery"? If you use that option they'll always take it out of your bank. Happened to me once didn't even notice it. I've had paypal fuck me over plenty of times other wise using their debit card. It has a "backup" feature that'll take money from your bank to use the card if you don't have a balance. I've turned it off before but it'll take out money anyway and totally screw me. Also damn, $40+ for a NSF fee is ridiculous , my bank only charges 25.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому

      No it was pay when ordered. I have contacted PP and instructed them that it must be charged to my CC, and they said no they can only charge bank. I questioned why they didn't use the balance that was in my PP account as there was 50.00 in the account. The excuse they used was because my balance was in CDN funds and the charge un USD, they always charge the bank, because the bank has better exchange then they do. I call BS on that one. I hate PP. I had a dispute about 12 years ago with them and swore I would never use that firm ever again. I am regretting I didn't stick with that plan, but now if you want to buy something on Ebay you have to because they don't accept anything else. Elon Musk owned the company at the time, and I am still so pissed about that one that I would never drive one of his tesla cars even if he gave me one.

    • @narunetto
      @narunetto 7 років тому

      That's absolute horse-shit. I've bought things before from Canada using USD to CAD from my balance and it was just fine. It just charged the appropriate exchange rate. Also, some stores now don't require PayPal which is nice. Every since eBay and PP split it allowed a seperate processor.

      Just wait for part 2 of the Yamaha mixer. The first part they sent was a pull and fubar, so the seller is sending me another and I will continue the video when it arrives.I have the letter from paypal showing that they tried to deduct from my bank account and there was no funds in that account so they debited from my paypal account instead. So someone fu--ed up at PP on that one. Just gives me another reason to hate them.Love the comments on the paypalsucks dot com website.

      When I visited Canada years ago a dollar from Canada was equal to a US dollar, at least it was if you bought something near the border. On the US side near the border stores accepted our Canadian money and if a hamburger was a $1 US then they accepted a $1 Canadian as payment.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 років тому

      10 years ago the Canadian dollar was worth more than the USD.It has only been in the last 3 or 4 years that it has slid to .75 or so, but it was over par for several years.

    Not exactly the Teac Reference 500 here... There's a way of making well-built and great sounding compact component but this isn't it. To be fair to Yamaha, it was probably built to a much lower price point.

    I am trying to fix a cd player that refuses to play a cd 5 times out of 10.. I hate it when something works and then it doesn't and then it works again and then it doesn't. How to repair these weird problems? I don't understand how it is possible that something sometimes works and other times doesn't. Make up your mind already! Either you work or you don't! Man! I feel a bit desperate. Also, the volume up button sometimes works and other times doesn't.

    Its NOT "lithium grease". People see white grease and they immediately think its lithium. Never use Lithium grease on any electronics you care about. Ill give you some good advice. Buy TAMIYA ceramic grease. The same one that is used for plastic gears in their RC cars. Its insanely slippery, lasts forever, and a little goes a long long way. Made specifically for all electronic/plastic gears etc. I wouldnt be without a tube or two on my bench.

      The old carbonated ones weren't the most reliable, but the fuel injected engines are super reliable. Mine is an 07, bought it brand new.
      Only thing I have replaced is the battery. Needs tires now, but I would expect that as I have 60K on the originals.
      Prior to this I had a Virago, and had to have the front forks done, the stator failed, was repaired by the dealer. Then the starter, died had that replaced and then t he stator went again.
      Prior to that I had a Honda CX500. It was a 76. Had been my dad's bike, and I had a Honda Hawk 400 at the same time. The Honda's never gave me any trouble either. So far, in 10 years the HD hasn't let me down, but this will likely be my last bike. Getting too old to ride, and with all the idiots out there on the road, I am riding less and less these days. Have had a few close calls with a few drivers that if I could I would throw them in jail. Had one texting run right through a light and jsut about hit me, and another one on my side of the road that I had to put the bike on the ground to avoid becoming a statistic.
      You tend to re-evaluate your choice to ride a bike when you get run off the road by someone who is either stoned, and drunk behind the wheel.
