    Tip: Cheap/free indoor green onion planters can be had from buying lettuce in plastic tubs from the grocery store. They're about 6" x 12", 5-"-6" deep. They're a little flexible, but surprisingly tough. I have a single LED bulb (verified full spectrum) and my onions grow superbly all year round.

      @@TheRipeTomatoFarms This is good to know. Also, another question concerning the green onion’s little cousin, chives. I’m growing a pot of those indoors mostly right now. My green onions pot is still currently outside for the time being. I want both to harden off so it’s feeling like a race against mother nature’s timing on that end. Problem is that the only two people in my house who are doing gardening is me and my mom. But we both work as well and therefore don’t always have the time every day to move pots out or around the house to the areas that have sunlight. The other person in the household wants absolutely nothing to do with gardening so mom and I can’t even trust them to move pots around or outside. So I only have 2 days off and I use a grow light for my chives. The grow light I only use for evening and nighttime hours so the seedlings continue to grow.
      So I guess my question to you is how you get around the issue of hardening your green onions off (or any other vegetables that you grow indoors) for the winter?

      Hey! If you're interested, I can suggest 2 potting mixes. Farfard, and ProMix. I don't have the space to make my own, and have used (and reused) these 2 brands for about 6 years now. I've never had a problem with bugs or gnats. I also suggest you stay FAR away from Miracle-Gro, which is infested.

    Hi, thanks for this video. I have been growing Spring onions indoors in the UK since over winter time. They are all about the same size as in your video around 4:57mins. However, they seem to be stuck at this stage for some time, they grow longer but are very thin and the stalks are drooping. The leaves are still green. Is there any way to fix this? I used regular herb compost and vermiculite mixture as the soil and water it infrequently, it seems to get decent sunlight as on windowsill. There are about 17 sprouts from seedlings now all within the a 5 inch pot. Any tips would be helpful on how to make sure they grow more/straighter? Should I just trim all the tips about 1 to 2 inches and wait more? Thanks in advance!

      Thin them to the desired spacing by either pulling them up or cutting them at the root collar. You thin them so they grow properly as adult plants. Cheers!

    My mom always cuts off leaves on onions that are supposed to grow bulbs and what happens the onions die because all the time the leaves get cut off like I mean always like when a new leave grows it gets cut off for harvest I asked her why she does that she says I heard that if you do that the bulbs will be bigger because there will be more energy going to the bulbs what always happens the whole plant dies because it doesn't get photosynthesis and no bulb harvest. THOSE FAKE NEWS ON WEBSITES OMG PLEASE STOP 😡 😔

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms

      Yeah, what you do with the bulb onions is to bend the stalks over about 2 weeks before harvest. Just like Garlic. That will send nutrients back the bulb and maximize the harvest. Do NOT actually cut the shoots.

      Hey Sherina, that happens sometimes to mine too. I think a change of soil to a bigger pot will help. Try not to over-water. Also, disturb the roots as little as possible, even though they are quite hardy. :-)

    So, green opinions, bunching onions and scallions are all the same?? Are they all just immature or young onions? From any onions even could do red? A guy on another video said they, bunching onions, could be perennials. So,as you said, cut from the tops and leave the roots intact and they will just continue to grow? Thank you!

    • @TheRipeTomatoFarms
      @TheRipeTomatoFarms  3 роки тому +2

      Hey Mary, great question. Green Onions are Scallions...they are the same thing. Bunching Onions are a type of Scallion originating from China. True Scallions and Green Onions are NOT immature bulb onions..they should never form a bulb, no matter how old they get. Scallions are indeed perennial....cut the green shoots off and they keep coming back....I have a patch that's 7 years old and I never do anything with it other than water a couple of times in the summer and mulch it heavily. :-)
