- Hackers have returned to targeting FasTrak drivers, trying to steal personal information. Southern California saw a rise in these sorts of scams during the summer, but it seems to be increasing again. Officials warn people to be cautious when receiving messages asking for information.
The question is...why are we paying all these extra bogus tolls to use the freeways that our tax dollars already paid for building them. Some people might say that it's for maintenance. Ummm, ok, but what are taxes for then???

It takes years and years to pay for this construction. It’s not a one and done thing. If you knew how infrastructure is funded then you would understand better.

I only fell for it because I had used it twice back to back by mistake. So when I did pay the first 2 I thought I had used it again for the 3rd time and accidentally put my info but didn’t but bank info

Most of these hackers are from China or Russia.

ISNT FASTRAK A SCAM IN AND OF ITSELF ?
I got one of the scam texts. The "63" country code in the number the text was from was a dead giveaway that it was a scam. It said it was from the OC FastTrack and I hadn't driven on any of their toll roads or FastTrack lanes.
Got the same as well this week. The rough amateur grammar ("please pay for FastTrak lane", "wish you a happy holiday") and odd web address also make it obvious. 63 (Philippines) has been the source lately for other recent scam texts too.

Usually the number is obviously bogus, but can't trust Caller ID. Number shown can be easily spoofed. This goes for bank, police, etc supposedly calling. Can't trust any of it. Always log in directly (not clicking links) into one's FasTrak account. Likewise for other important accounts. Also, secure email accounts. Many overlook those. Never reuse passwords.

Omg I got that text this morning!!! And I reported it as junk! I didn’t click the link and went straight to my account and saw that I had funds in my account still.

I got one yesterday and I deleted it. Real citation comes in form of official letter mailed to you with photo of your car and driver face.

Yeah, sounds more like a phishing scam, but allegedly the scammers also 'hacked' the phone of that dude's Dad (by using his keys)... So, I guess hacking may occur, _after_ any successful phishing.
I don't even pay my real toll fees, so I'm safe from this scam.

Yeah, using information one would prefer to keep private, as identifying information, has always been a bad idea.
Most of these companies should have no business knowing anything about us at all.
I got one of those texts and immediately deleted.. If I don't know you I delete. Mu question is, if this was announced in the summer why is it that KCAL is just now doing a story on it. It's not like it was an earthquake and you didn't know it was coming. Oh you had to spend 3 hours on a car chase. I understand. Car chases have priority over everything. Perhaps you should have a conversation with the guys that hang out at that DESK.

Yeah, how would they even know who to text at what numbers, otherwise? They clearly got some level of customer info
They are probably only doing a 'broadcast' of California area codes. So, sure, if you don't have such an account, you know it's a scam, just like the Zelle scams that ask you if you just sent money from your Bank of America account. If you don't have a B of A account, you delete it. But if you do have an account, you might press the 1, 2, or 9 button to respond according to their question. Next thing you know you're getting a phone call with someone claiming to be a worker at B of A's Fraud dept and so on.
Here in NYC we have EZPASS and there have been times when folks get a text claiming to be from the NY EZPASS Customer Service dept. Even if I got one, I'd log on via my computer not via the phone.
Bottom line, they are sending thousands of texts. They only have to be successful a few times to make it profitable for them.
They don't go after the scammers just like they don't get up after people who commit credit card fraud because it's too expensive or at least that's what I was told by my credit card company and my bank. So as long as there's no penalty for pulling off these scams they're going to keep doing it

Only convincing for someone that is not very bright. I received the message a couple of days ago. The messages do not even identify the car's license plate. And the phone number!!!!! An international text from a California, USA entity?

Yeah it sucks at hackers are doing this... But at the same time in this day and age there is absolutely no excuse for a person to not see through the scam... All these agencies blatantly tell you they never contact you for information...
So if you're giving up personal information because you got spooked by a text message like this then you kind of deserve what's coming your way at that point... Because you should have been smarter.
