This is fantastic. Finally a local promoting our beautiful Western Cape. Also, something to share with friends and family overseas. We are very privileged. I'm glad that I "stumbled" across your UA-cam channel. Thank you.

Thanks to share those beautiful views of South Africa. In January 2012 passing by Oudtdhoorn to visit the Cango caves ( so beautiful) the day after we went up to Swartberg Pass, down below the valley was an amazing green.....South Africa is my best holidays spot, it's so diversified; the sea, the desert, the mountains and the people so friendly ....

I was at Oudtshoorn in the army in 1974. We explored the area weekend after weekend. This video recalled so many good memories that will stay with me until my death
And now I am living in Australia but SA will stay my country.

      Hey Johan...
      You lucky fish you...
I was also in the army in '74, short while at Oudshoorn, but the only "exploring" we've been doing weekend after weekend was full kit afkakke in the Swartberg.
But yes, I'm fortunate to still stay in RSA, and do travel those areas when I can.
Our country is so vast, and so much to see, that it will take a lifetime to do everything in a person's travel bucket list...
Must be tough staying in Aus, and still say SA is your country...
I moved down from Pretoria to the Western Cape, still calling myself a Blue Bull after 45 years, and getting lip frequently...
Hope you still support the Bokke... 🤔🤔🤔🤔

That's the Swartberg Pass ... from both sides. There is no Prince Albert Pass ... but there is a Prince Alfred Pass ... from the R62 Langkloof to either Plett or Knysna (depending if you turn left or right) ... another one of the most beautiful passes in South Africa - nice video by the way.

Me and 2 other friends camped at the exact same spot with our adventure bikes last year Dec. We left the morning at 5:00 and it was already 33c. Its a absolute gem of a place. Its called the Hel for a reason, it gets moer hot in summer.

Matt where ever you are from, you did not grew up in the Karoo. Imagine: 4X4, combat vehicle tyres, letting down the tyre pressure. Sorry that I laughed at you but we've been over the Swartbergpas in a 1961 Zephyr-6: 3 gears forward and reverse. Easy goings. What would you have done if a car came from the opposite side? No, I won't tell you. Educate yourself. The nicest fruit you can but only dream of came from The Hell, grapes. Pears and the best ever peaches: Rlberta's. There were still people living there when we were there.
Well thank you for having taken me back to my childhood years. It was good to tears to see it again.

Arriving from Northern Rhodesia in the sixties, Mom,Dad and 4 children in our VW Microbus. Travelling up the pass mom heard a 'clanging' noise at the rear of the Combi. Closer inspection revealed that left wheel were 3 nuts loose ( you could turn them out with 2 fingers and another nut laying loose in the hubcap.

My wife and did the Swartberg pass on our Yamaha 750 triple road bike
A very frightening and exhilirating trip. On the downhill bits she actually dozed off! How do I know? Her visor on her helmet kept banging me in the back of my neck. The most painful parts of my body where my fore arms and wrists. This was as a result of holding upper body up and steering the bike around large stones and washaways on the gravel road. It was a fantastic trip! We are both well into our 80's now. Many times we pull out the photos and relive that journey. Marvelling at the steep and sharp bends we slipped and slided through
Not once did we 'come off'!!

If one looks closely at switchbacks on the old passes, where the turn has to be tight, one can notice when travelling up hill, just before the turn the track goes downhill.
Whenever making a turn the oxcarts- usually having eight oxen - needed to have a downhill stretch whether going down, the track naturally has this, or going up the mountain; the down hill gradient caused the oxen and cart to bunch up and allow a much tighter turn.

I had the honor to sray in " Die Hel" in a dry river gorge. In a small tent for 2. The Swartberg mountain i know like my hand. Yes on top of Wawielberg next ti a beuatifull waterfall, one of many on the Prince Albert side we stayed in our small tent, exploring the mountain. Our bath was the pools. At night we enjoyed the company of the wildlife in the mountain. The sky was so near us that we could nearly touch the stars.. In "Die Hel" we came face to face wuth a leopard. Luckily for us the wind blew in the right direction. I will love to do this one more time..

Did a 10 day Army leadership course out of the Academy in Saldanha back in the early 70's. Snow on the mountains, heat stroke in the Hel for the unfit with poor water management skills. We did it on foot from Zoar, Seweweeks, down into the valley (plenty rapelling) across the snow cold Gamka, up and along the mountains. Final day was a welcome event! Loved it.
The inhabitants at the rough end of the valley still roped their donkeys and carts up the mountains to go shopping! Amazing.

Totally unplanned and on the sour of the moment as we were heading home to Durban from Mossel Bay as I decided to show my wife Oudshoorn, the Swartberg Pass and Prince Albert. I had done this trip some decades arealier and wanted her to experience the raw beauty of the area. Needless to say our trip home to Durban, instead of taking from Monday midday to Wednesday morning (earliest eta) resulted in a home arrival of 10pm the next Sunday night. Epic trip

All of this preceded by a scenic but gruelling ride on Gamkaskloof. We plan on riding Sani Pass early December - also on the bike. Which of the two passes was the most tricky/steep/tight switchbacks etc? Just wrt technical & topographic aspects?

2011 We went down into Die Hel with a 4x2 (no low range) Fortuner, and a heavily laden 4x4 trailer. Went down that last bit in 1st gear, and brakes. Phew! We just made the bottom, when my vehicle brakes started bottoming out. Worried my backside off on getting that combination back up the steep gravelly road without getting stuck on/by the gravel (wheelspin), but my trusty 4x2 Fortuner pulled us through. 1st gear, steady revs, just on max torque, all the way up. Oh yea, we did stop on the concrete bit to give the vehicle and myself a rest. If I recall correctly, it was 4 hours in, and a bit longer out.
PS. How do you crash an expensive drone into a mountain?

I remember so well the opening of the road into 'Did hel' as I grew up in Prince Albert and my dad served on the Prince Albert Divisional Council, responsible for building the road. A mr du Plessis was administrator of the Cape Province and visited Prince Albert to open the road. Mrs Marie Luttig was in charge of the official dinner held in honour of mr du Plessis in the church hall. I was in grade 11 or 12 and we served as waiters at this dinner. Mrs Luttig, or as I knew her, 'tannie Marie' trained us how to properly serve the VIP guests from one side and remove llates from the other side. Desert was very fancy, a baked brandy pudding whuch was 'set alight' as we girl 'waitresses' walked in a row from the kitchen into the dining area to serve desert. This was a very fancy affair for a small country town in those days!!

Just wanted to mention this as well: many years after the opening of this road or pass down to the hell, I visited it again. A guy was luving there making a living on his own. He 'sold' information, like the value of land un the Hell for example for R5.00!!

You are lucky to drive it. I was still in school when we walked it from Calitzdorp over the wide neck and connect with the road. You then start to decent down the road. We slept just below the pass and the following day we took the old trusty "binneband tjoep down the river back to Oudtshoorn. It was called the "To Hell and Gone Sleepfoot Special" Trek. It really was hell if you were not an experienced walker water was a big problem for you. But hell it was a beautiful walk.

Another great video of a beautiful area. I did this on my motorcycle not too long ago. I, as a relative newcomer to off-road riding, found it very tough. But very beautiful. I see Matt also likes his tomato sauce. Good man, Matt!

Baine only completed the pass, he didn't start it ! It was in fact started and planned by Jan Tassies who went bankrupt after 13 months and only completimg 6 kilometers of the road. I am glad your drone didn't get hurt badly and you could still show us the beautiful view from above !
