    Despite me visiting South Shields around 9 months ago, I still have no clue what the creature is at 1:36 and I'm still very curious. I'd love to know your guesses!

      Nice video Caroline! I love cliff coastline and South Shields looks stunning.
      About the creature:It looks a bit like an eel (the tail definitely looks like one of an eel). I just googled and figured out that eels can live on land (didn't know that), so it might be one.

      @WhenAdventureKnox  2 роки тому

      Ooooh I didn't know eels could live on land either! Someone else had mentioned about maybe a bird having pecked it out of the sea and it was dropped up on top of the cliff. Would make sense as to how the eel could get up so high!

      I'd imagine the eel was picked out of the sea by one of the gulls, but dropped where you found it...

      That looks like a slow worm, it's actually a type of snake, one of the few species native to Britain. Completely harmless.

    Hi Coraline, great video. As a resident of South Shields, it's nice to see people highlighting what this town has to offer, areas like South Shields don't get enough coverage. That mysterious creature is a Lamprey.

    *Greetings from SOCHI! I am very glad to meet you. Thank you. You showed a tour of the LIGHTHOUSE and a cafe where you drank coffee and warmed yourself, I live by the sea. I hope you like me. I love to travel*

      Hey hey, I think you're the first person who has commented on my videos who is from Russia - I sometimes have to look up where places are, but thanks to Sochi hosting the winter Olympics a few years ago I knew instantly! 🙌 Anyone who loves to travel will instantly win me over. Really pleased you enjoyed seeing the lighthouse and Marsden Grotto!

      I hope this video was a nice trip down memory lane. How awesome that you live on Vancouver Island. I visited as part of a backpacking trip in 2010, I think I was in Victoria for 3 nights and Tofino for 2. A stunning part of the world!

      Hi Greg, really pleased to hear you enjoyed the video and got a little trip down memory lane. Very cool that you live in Asia now - do you get much of an opportunity to come back to the UK, and specifically the North East any more?

    Great information on the Lighthouse. Enjoyed hearing the history of the grotto. Always like to see Roman ruins. We saw toilets like that in Turkey and they explained the system to be the same way.

      Was it Ephesus that you saw the toilets in? It was such a long time ago when I visited, but I do remember the toilets there an they were equally fascinating! Really pleased you enjoyed the lighthouse tour too.

    What a varied and interesting day. Lighthouses, Roman forts, beaches - it’s always good to rediscover (or discover, as you did here 😂) the places you grew up around. The wi-fi signs in the cave made me chuckle. Great video, I had heard of South Shields but knew nothing about it, so thanks for introducing me to the area. 👍

    • @WhenAdventureKnox
      @WhenAdventureKnox  2 роки тому +1

      Haha, yes, the wi-fi ones were my favourite too. One was behind the bar so I ended up asking the staff if it was okay for me to film it as when I was in Cornwall at Rick Stein's, I was filming the menu up high behind the counter, but a manager got upset thinking I was filming her staff, so I learnt from that to communicate my intentions and ask if it's okay. The staff behind the bar here chuckled and said everyone wants to take a photo of the sign 🤣

      I've never thought about comparing the two, but you're right, there's a lot of similarities with the rugged coastlines and how green they are too. I guess what we have in history, you guys make up for with bigger wildlife - things like whales in your waters and bears on land! 😍 Whilst we do have whales, it's a lot more unusual for them to be on the North Eastern side as the sea is small.

I found out about the Victoria tunnel a few years ago and would love to take a tour of it so good spot in your research about that!

      Such a small world that you've seen this video and your mum's school was there!! I've just done a quick Google search for hagfish and I think you're spot on, it looks exactly the same, and someone had previously commented that it's likely a seabird plucked whatever it was out of the water and then dropped it on the land - really fascinating to see it!

      @@WhenAdventureKnox No problem, I watch some vaguely educational stuff on TV sometimes! My Mum's family used to live on the Lawe Top, which is the hill on which the fort is on, so it's somewhere I'm quite familiar with. My Mum used to walk me and my sister over to my Gran's from Westoe, when the pit was still there. Our house was built on top of another one, that was bombed by the Luftwaffe in 1941. There's loads of history in South Shields. I could tell you quite a bit and there will be others that could tell you loads more

    South Shields is a benighted shothole. Some parts might look nice to visit, but to live there? You'd change your tune very quickly. There's a very nasty, violent, criminal undercurrent to the place. A better reflection is to take a look at the state of King Street. Or a walk through the (central) Woodbine estate. Although I understand it's no longer the no go area it was, but it's still RAF (rough as fuck). I was born and brought up there, you couldn't pay me to go back. Escape is the best thing you can do as far as South Shields goes. BTW, that accent would, to them, identify you as an enemy.

    Last part of my research Souter light house is located in village of marsden in south England Souter was first lighthouse in world to be actually designed and built specifically to use alternating electric current most advanced lighthouse technology of it day first lit in 1870s . Souter was described at time as one of most powerful light in world named Souter because located on lizard takes point name from Souter point visitors can climb 76 steps to top of tower learn about life of lighthouse keeper his family discover village ghosts it’s built in 1871 toward ships from dangerous rocks at white burn steel and finally marsden rock it’s was demolished by national trust in 1997 in interest of public safety the rock is 90 feet sea stack of magnesia and limestone which lies 300feet of main cliff face formerly it’s known for naturally formed arch the arch collapsed in 1946 following winter of storms creating two depart stacks smaller to two was demolished in 1997 is reachable on foot during low tide completely surrounded by water high tide cliffs surrounding marsden rock are important breeding ground of sea birds colonies can often be seen on top of rock including kittiwakes , herring gill, razorbills. I learnt about the 'Lizard Point' reference when we visited the lighthouse, which was ironic as just a few weeks earlier, I'd done a hike from the lizard Lighthouse in Cornwall to Kynance Cove and so knew exactly where they were talking about when they explained you can't have 2 lighthouses with the same name as it causes confusion. The sea birds were very cool around Marsden rock, it was a shame that my camera zoom couldn't get any great footage of them. I'd have loved to see the arch before it collapsed.

    • @Officialtechfixed4u
      @Officialtechfixed4u Рік тому

      The arch did NOT collapse in 1946.... It fell in 1996, leaving two stacks. The less stable of the two was then blown up in 1997. Neither event had anything to do with winter storms.

    Souter lighthouse is not in South Shields. Go to Sunderland for that..... and why it would be 'obvious' that being in the coast would be cold is anybody's guess. Ghost stories from The Grotto are factually incorrect, and it does not possess a 'cafe'.... It is/was however a hotel at the time of the making of this. "Haven't researched today very well" is the most accurate quote from the video. Go to South Shields.... Its spectacular.... but take this video as ....well, ... 'misguided'?

      Ooooh I had no idea Vaux had taken over the grotto previously. I remember them having a huge brewing factory on the edge of the river in Sunderland and then it being demolished to upgrade the city centre. I still find the story about the radio DJ to be funny. I'm pleased the story of the Grotto seems to have captured your interest as much as it did mine!
