  • 'Shiels' is a documentary about the shared history, tradition and connection between North and South Shields. People have been crossing the River Tyne by boat as long as there have been communities either side of the water.
The film also looks at the possibilities of closer co-operation between North and South Shields, similar to Newcastle - Gateshead.

The memories this awoke, born in N. Shields but spent many happy days on the South side as a cadet at S. Shields Marine Tech. Now living in Ontario, Canada but always a geordie with the river and its people in my blood. Many thanks for this, there's a ton of stories out there, our music, comedy, the people and the place all to be told, there are a number of sights on you tube extolling the virtues of the NE and none have a bad thing to say.

Thank you. I really enjoyed the video. I used to travel to Whitley Bay every morning using the ferry from South to North Shields and travelling back late afternoon. it was an important part of my life and I loved to observe the weather changes.

Born in Wallsend raised in North Shields. Left school during Thatcher years when she was at war with the unions and all of the traditional trades, ship building, fishing, engineering etc were shutting down creating mass unemployment in the region which is why many like myself were forced to leave the area for good.

Born in South Shields in 56, joined the army in 75 and was posted to Germany in 76. I have lived in Germany ever since. But I still consider Shields to be home.

Really interesting video. I’m from eyemouth, it’s a shame the fishing in Britain has all but gone compared to what it was.

September 2020, only a few months left till Brexit, so c'mon Boris, we want our waters back from the EU. A lot of us on North Shields fish quay & the trawlers lost our jobs in the late 70's, so bring our fisheries jobs back. Make Fishing in North Shields Great Again :)

@@zivkovicable Err yes it did, we got Brexit so that's a start, & it's early days of course but heading in the right direction. The Shields folk are really passionate about this subject, so keep your negative scepticism to yourself ok. This is about peoples livelihoods.

@@raedgaj3878 Well Brexit has cost me my livelihood. & I feel passionately about that.
& i'd feel happy for you if Brexit had saved the British fishing industry, or Boris had negotiated our waters back. None of that has happened. You've been conned.
