I legit thought Gangle's expressions were 2D with how smooth and expressive they were, glad to see the team following more closely to storyboarding and other 2D references with emotions and such. It gives it such a nostalgic and clean feeling, but also incredibly technologically impressive!
it’s easy to assume honestly, even as a 2D animator if her tweens from expression to expression weren’t so smooth i would have thought the same, team did a great job squeezing the strengths 2D allows for expression :p
As a 3D animation student this is sooo cool to see!! I’d love more in depth tutorials someday on how some of these advanced effects are pulled off! :) thanks so much for this!!
Same here ! I've always wondered how you guys made it in maya (since I use Maya in my school) It'd be cool to get a tutorial indeed ! It's just awesome! :D
Definitely!! It feels like there’s such a lack of resources when it comes to 3D animation, so I always love to see the behind-the-scenes for shows and movies!
What a smart way to do a character like this !!! I’d love to see more about the development of Gangles Rig as shes such a unique character with such specific problems
I don't understand one bit about animation but it's still amazing to see the process and creation of such a complicated looking rig. It looked amazing in the new episode, you guys are so skilled and talented.
This looks very innovative. I bet trying to rig a fluid face on a texture like surface would be tough, but the short cuts and techniques was very impressive. Keep up the great work!! 😊
As someone who has never dipped a foot into animation, rigging, and hardly at all into 3d stuff in general, even I noticed how improved Gangle's mask felt in this episode, it felt so much, smoother? Nicer to watch? More animated and cool. You did an amazing job and greatly improved the project's final product
I have nothing but the utmost respect for those who do rigging; however this is above and beyond! Taking 3D layers onto a 2D front view, and then plastering that onto the mask is something else! You are certainly the Episode 4 MVP.
man as an amateur 3d artist i love getting to see how all this behind the scenes stuff works bc theres a lot to be learned from it like at first i had the idea that the elements of gangle's face were just shrinkwrapped to her mask and was trying to work out in my head how stuff like z-fighting was handled, but rendering it to a texture and mapping that on instead is a very clever solution
I've been searching for a video like this from one of the Glitch artists for like 3 days now, thank you xD Please do a full tutorial on this if possible! I personally use Blender, but I've tried looking through every Maya and Blender 2D face rig tutorials that I could find and NONE of them explain anything even slightly as complex as Gangle's face rig, things such as being able to precisely control the shape of the mouth and being able to export the animation to other 3D software. They usually only show how to switch between different pre-drawn faces. The Maya Export Geometry section specifically hurts my brain the most, I'm not even sure how you've achieved geometry displacement that clean, I'm guessing it's something Maya-specific, but if i were to use shape keys in Blender it would be hell.
I’ve tried dabbling with similar rigs in blender. Our rigging systems are a little different than maya, but I think you could use either bendy bones or the spline IK modifier to rig the geometry for the lips, and a shrink wrap modifier to deform that geometry onto the head.
For spline IK, you could actually weight each point of a NURBS curve to follow main control bones (like the lip corners) using a ton of hook modifiers. You can then have finer control bones parented to the spline IK bone chain. These finer controls will actually be the ones to deform the geometry.
I LOVE RIGGING CHARLIE I LOVE RIGGING!!! no joke. You did awesome with the expressions in the newest episode! I've been trying to get a bit more into 3-D rigging because I think it's honestly so cool!!! :D
That is super freaking amazing! Admittedly, I would be intimidated to use it by how complex the face rig looks, but I can definitely see how some animators can get a lot of mileage out of it.
Wow! I am a rigger as well and I thought you just projection mapped the face through a material. This is fantastic! Congrats getting it through the Unreal pipeline!
I love seeing how 2D facial rigs work in 3D productions! Playmobil: The Movie is another production that makes great use of 2D facial rigs, and their method is pretty similar! I wonder if the same sort of thing could be done in Blender. That would be immensely useful to me...
As someone trying to get started working professionally as a rigger, I always love seeing things like this that give insight into how to set up such an expressive character. Thanks for sharing this!
i was actually really impressed with her face in the episode, the motions were so smooth and i wondered how it was done - i only knew textures but it was too clean for that
Woah, This is a great Rigging, Program, me as an animator and Rigger, Artist, finds this really interesting and amazing, great work! It looked great in the show it so high quality it’s unreal!! Love the break down too! Note: do you have any tips for rigging and animation? :))
Omg trainguyy the one who made the animation overhaul minecraft mod, also I love how this was done, I'e always wondered how animators would animate 2d faces on 3d characters
When I saw the episode I was immediately super curious as to how that rig worked, I've never seen anything like it. The end result is impeccable, thanks for making a video on it!
Me and my other friends were so curouse on how this worked (we all use blender, only ibe used maya at uni before) Super cool to get to see what it looks like!!! I love looking into cool complex things and seeing how to take it into my ownwork ^-^
This is fascinating! I'd love more behind the scene rigging for other characters, they've all got such unique designs that look really fun to animate. I'd also really love to see how Gangle's ribbons are rigged, the'yre such a great part of her design!
Wow its so insane!!! I can imagine the work of animating all of this, Its so fluid!!!!!!!!!, but just one question where can I find the background music of the video? i really like the music :D
Said this in another comment but as someone who does traditional 2D animation if her expressions weren’t so smoothly tweened i would have thought this was traditional 2D, you guys did a fantastic job squeezing the expression and life out of her
also making the eyebrow controls and the mouth controls squares that can be squashed or stretched as apart of the rig, and then the lines played with for further expressive capability is really smart
I’m going into an animation class next year so I’m quite excited to start experimenting with rigs and models! Once I finish making them of course. Very exciting stuff!
I saw a comment from the main video that I resonate with; I am going to miss Gangle having pupils on her mask. I just feel like she had a lot more expressivity that was fun to watch. Does that make sense? Maybe Zooble will find her a more chill mask with pupils.
You know what this music is? It's a theme that plays in background of Gangle's "training video". I haven't realized it myself at first. Not sure if it's made for the episode or it's royalty-free Also, the rig method is genius and mind-blowing
that was made largely possible because the eyes/mouth are all topologically (is that a real word) separate from eachother, so they can move anywhere on the face without causing weird clipping issues that you'd normally run into with a traditional 3D rig
This might be a silly question, but how do you get the mesh for the face to follow the curve of the mask? And how do you prevent Z-fighting between the mask and the face?
there is some z-fighting in the maya preview sometimes, it's the only part that relies on deforming the geometry to match the curvature in order to give the animators an active preview of what the shader will look like in unreal (there's no simple way to replicate the shader in maya AFAIK) once it's in unreal however, all the layers are flat and the orthographic scene capture camera is used to get a render target texture from the geometry, which is can be put back onto the face like any other texture without any kind of clipping whatsoever, regardless of the face curvature
that was done by marc humphreys! for future episodes though we're repurposing this rig to double as a normal gangle face rig, to keep using the benefits of the render target stuff.
I legit thought Gangle's expressions were 2D with how smooth and expressive they were, glad to see the team following more closely to storyboarding and other 2D references with emotions and such. It gives it such a nostalgic and clean feeling, but also incredibly technologically impressive!

it doesnt even have a 2d style?
@@loocoonami please see an optometrist
@@loocoonamiWhat do you mean by “2D style” exactly?
@caldercockatoo2234 i think they mean that the show is 3d animation, not 2d
@@caldercockatoo2234 i think they meant it doesn't look like it was animated like usual 2D stuff is animated
I make avatars for vrchat, and oml when i saw how expressive this model was my jaw was to the floor. Great work!! 💛

i'm not sure if it's possible in just blender, but in both blender and unreal absolutely! nothing about the usage of maya here is maya-specific
Some tried to recreate what in this video already
Amazing.
