I was one of those milk lovers. I used to gulp down several glasses a day...loved cheese....here I am now Vegan for 3 years...and genuinely don't miss it. I have the added 'complication' that I have to eat Gluten Free also cos I'm a Coeliac..so sometimes eating out can be harder as it usually cuts out pasta and burger style dishes...but I've adjusted...found the spots I can go to...and more choices are coming out everyday...I can genuinely say I love this lifestyle...love the foods I eat...I never run out of ideas...still as passionate about it even 3 years on. It's a bit tricky initially as you're transitioning and finding new 'default' meals but once you get it...its easy. Like she said...a great way to start is go with meals you love and find a way to veganise it.

Not only the animal factory farming is run by immigrants (legal or not). The majority of the big fruit and veggies farming is maintained by the same. Some is mechanically maintained but most is still picked by hand in our area. And the last few generations think they are too good to help, so they employ those less fortunate or the ones that will do it for the least amount possible.
On our farm, we plant, water and harvest all by our self. No it isn't a huge farm, but it feeds quite a few in our community. We donate a lot to the local food pantry and several families get boxes left on their porches (we know they will not ask for help). I tend to shop a lot of sales and coupon to add dry goods and household items that may be needed also.

I think individuals who claim to be Vegan due to diet or health issues and not for the animals and environment should indicate that they are plant based, not Vegan. If they do that I don't think people would be so upset when they come out claiming that they're back to consuming animals. I support those who are Vegan and will instantly unsubscribe when they go back to consuming animals, without harassing them, because I agree with you, maintain a positive community. I am still Vegan because of content you and others put out that makes it easier and healthier to maintain the lifestyle. Thank you for all you do and for this positive message.

I I would let them call themselves vegan and not worry about it. Technically, a vegan is somebody who doesn't eat animal products or something that doesn't contain animal ingredients which is generally the mainstream culture definition. For example, recently a famous TV host said they were going vegan in a health related way. You could tell he meant it in the sense of just not eating animal products and that was how it is generally understood. But I could also tell the host was a cool guy and he just might have some inkling of the ethical side.
The more the word "vegan" gets out in the public the better.

@@vegantina6565 That is one type of ethical vegan. There are also other people of different backgrounds with differing ethical approaches.
When a buy a product with the word vegan on the side of the container, that definition that you are giving does not apply. So there is at least one more meaning of the word.
Also, I don't think it does any good to set up gates in front of the word "vegan" like some kind of police force and say you cannot call yourself vegan unless you think such and such. Why not try to enlighten them about animal rights rather than say they have to call themselves plant based?I had just had a discussion with someone who thought Christian vegans weren't really vegan enough because they didn't follow the science and and that religious people should be attacked every chance we get for believing in things such as the bible. Someone from a religious background may have a differing approach to veganism. Many people see it as about compassion. The animal rights movement can still stay in the vanguard and its message is well known and easy to find on the internet.

When I was first introduced to the idea of "veganism" it was in a defensive preachy way. That turned me off, it was that arrogant "I'm better than you" vibe because you choose not to do something you use to do. I get it, when some people turn vegan they get a lot of slack because family and friend's are not use to change. But it was all in their approach.
If I would go 100% vegan, I think I would approach it by cooking and offering food like Candice said...but not advertise its VEGAN VEGAN VEGAN...it plays with people's mind. I know that I have gotten better, but if the word VEGAN is put in front of the tittle of my food my mind automatically has formed an opinion even before I try it. (Does that make sense). Anytime I am invited to a meal or gathering, I would bring my take on something and let the food/recipe spark conversation and speak for itself.

Yes, thank you, veganism is normal. NORMAL. Maybe it matters that I'm in my mid-40s and became a vegan after many years of vegetarianism that I literally can't relate to these people abandoning plant-based or--more rarely--veganism due to health problems that many vegans have experienced and corrected without giving up. I'm one of them. For me to quit this lifestyle someone would have to be threatening my family with death. It would require that level of emotional blackmail. And even then my repudiation of veganism wouldn't be sincere because it would not weaken my certainty that animals think and feel and deserve to exist without harm from me. TFP!

They give being vegan a bad name and alot of people focus on that part aswell. I feel more people would be more interested if it wasnt throwen in their face and criticized for their own choices.

I was introduced to veganism by my dad when I was 12.
Our entire family was Lacto vegetarian for religious reasons and I always detested meat and eggs since I was a kid but I never really understood vegans either.
I only heard the word once or twice in my childhood because veganism wasn't really a thing until 2015.
Then, my dad found the Mercy For Animals Facebook page and for the first time I actually saw what goes into the production of milk.
I was then pulled into the vegan universe and I started accumulating knowledge of the movement from then.
My main reason for going vegan was the environment aspect. I was always an environmentalist. I was amazed after watching Cowspiracy because no one so far in my education had really highlighted this issue!
Earth Day, Recycling Rockstars, plenty of environmental stuff but always getting side glances for being vegetarian!
3 years later and I am a hard core vegan and proud.
In my experience, the outreach of the Vegan movement is the most crucial to it's success!

One of the big reasons I'm vegan is my kids (apart from the animals obviously) I cant say "don't be mean to your brother" while simultaneously showing them it's ok to be mean in the extreme to helpless, beautiful, baby animals and causing them ultimate harm ! I want to teach my children love and compassion for everyone but ESPECIALLY the most helpless and disadvantaged who are relying on us to help. There are many many people who fit that bill but imo all the animals fit that description too and I refuse to let my children grow up with the imposed cognitive dissonance I did "that animal is one we love but this one is one we murder and eat" nah, not normal !

      @jkimmyloser 5 років тому +1

Agreed! I used to be vegetarian because I grew up being vegetarian due to my mum raising me that way and that I was allergic to so many things. When I was 19 or so, I felt like it was forced on me and not an active choice, so I went back to eating meat. I only stick to eating chicken, and or fish once in awhile. However, much of the time I really eat vegetarian, I'm still uncomfortable eating meat sometimes and attempting to make a meat based meal.
Part of the reason I started to eat meat was because my partner's family really got to me about not eating meat. And coming to me with so many reasons I shouldn't eat a plant based diet. Moreover, I felt left out sometimes when I didn't eat meat. I felt shamed so often, it was another reason I started to eat meat. On top of that, I met a vegan person that kept shoving in my face that I should be vegan for however many reasons that made me feel more shame. It made me dislike her.
I want to go back to being vegetarian. I hate the practiced 'joy' I have eating chicken. Hopefully it works out, and the whole thing with my partner's family doesn't effect me. LOL

I'm not a 100% vegan, but I follow a lot of vegan influencers and try to introduce veganism into my life as much as possible. I got an injury that affected my mental health and I wanted to become healthier so I started to dip into healthy living and, yes, vegetarianism and veganism. I would drink milk with breakfast almost every day and when I cut out I actually found out I'm lactose intolerant. But the big one for me was red meat. I've cut it almost entirely out of my diet except for VERY rare occasions because I learned of how terrible it is for the environment and people/animals involved. I'm still in high school and I don't think I'll cut out meat from my diet entirely for a while (I have problems with protein and tbh I just like the taste of meat), but I do my best to lower my intake for the sake of the earth. Don't get me wrong, I respect the living HECK out of full time vegans, but most people won't want to completely drop meat from their diet. If we want people to change their diets, I think we should open up the vegan community to everyone, including meat eaters. What you said about there being no vegan entertainment is completely true, and it sucks because people think of vegan food of this thing that you can eat ONLY if you're vegan, including me at a time. I don't think vegans should shame omnivores, but rather educate them. That's just my two cents.

If you’re in it just for the health than you’re on a plant based diet. You’re not vegan. Veganism isn’t just about food. It’s a lifestyle that encompasses every aspect of someone’s life. It’s about not eating animals or animal bi-product, not wearing leather or fur, buying cruelty free products, not supporting certain businesses like sea world. That’s what they influencers don’t understand. They think it’s just a trendy diet and then when they don’t eat properly & get sick they blame being vegan and make the whole movement look bad. It’s not hard being vegan if you do it right.

I try my best to eat vegan whenever I can but I'm severely allergic to nuts & most pulses (lentils, chickpeas etc.) so it can be really difficult. I've noticed a lot of vegan recipes use cashews in vegan cheese sauces so if anyone has any suggestions for a substitute I could use it would be much appreciated. Same goes for almond milk - I can only rly have oat milk:(

There is a recent trend to disrupt conventional wisdom. You can find articles like this daily on opinion posting sites and influencing videos all over the internet. (For instance, getting up early doesn't really increase productivity and why its better to put all your eggs in one basket.) I'm not trashing this trend, just noting that while it's healthy refrain from mindless acceptance of "truths, " this may have become a trend that rejects anything at all in the pursuit of appearing rebellious. When it has been proven factually, scientifically how much healthier for humans and the planet veganism is, rejecting it and then promoting that rejection just to be "fashionable" is repulsive.

This is very disrespectful and unempathetic to people who cant be vegan for health reasons. The ex-vegans went to multiple doctors, and it took them a long time to come to terms with not being vegan anymore. And they are eating ethically farmed local meat/eggs... not factory products. They are still staying as true to a better world concept as they can while being in their best health. I dont get why we cant just be happy that people love animals and find their best health in different ways. I find this community so discouraging

I'm pretty sure that the people who don't thrive on a Vegan diet are not yet ready morally to be Vegan. My Husband has been Vegan for most of his 79 years and he's in better shape than many people half his age. So, it's not like it can't work over the long haul.
Many fail at Socialism, or think that Socialism is untenable, for the exact same reason. They are not yet morally ready to be Socialist and instead of admitting that they're not ready to live that noble a lifestyle, they blame the system.
Many who fail at Veganism were likely more concerned about animals than about people.
Those who succeed at Veganism are likely concerned about the welfare of the entire Creation - including Humans. Veganism is not a vehicle or excuse for being a misanthrope.

Veganism is based purely on trying to live as compassionately as you can, it's not just about what you eat. It's not possible to be perfect. If you've made the connection between the abuse of animals and your lifestyle and made that choice to change it makes no sense to go back the other way. Your outlook is spot on.
