    I've used a $40 lunchbox oven in trucks for years and would never go away without it. Made up a wire trivet/rack to fit in the bottom and does everything from pies, sausage rolls etc up to frozen meals. Foil chinese takeaway sized containers fit easily.

    Good vid but......wrap both in foil for a fair comparison , Ive had the $50 shitter for a few years now and it cooks pies crispy , you just need to know how to do it . With the $50 job , put pie in the oven and close it cook for 30 mins , open it up and put a stick in it to keep it ajar for another 30 mins ......crispy , crunchy pie ...simply.

      I’ll have to give that ago. I was just following the instruction of the oven on how to do it. Doesn’t mean it’s correct.
      Clearly if you can get crispy stuff out of it. Thanks for the info.

      I was about to say the same thing, I use my $50 cheapie for pies and sausage rolls all the time. But I also have a travel buddy and it's true that they definitely have different uses from time to time.

      For my cheap one I just buy foil trays & put the food on them inside the oven to cook - turns out BEAUTIFUL every single time. Punch holes in the bottom of the foil tray with a stick or skewer & it creates better hot air flow for a crispier pie base.

    This video seems like your decision was made from the start, and your comparisons seemed to highlight that. Did you try cooking ribs in the cheaper cooker? Did you try pouring a bottle of water into the travel budy to see how waterproof it was?

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  4 роки тому +6

      The travel buddy doesn’t advertise to be water tight like the other one so why would I pour water into something that doesn’t even claim to be able to do it would just be stupid.
      If you don’t like my review of it then find one that suits your opinion 🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️.

    I’ve never used the travel buddy but the thing I like about the cheap lunchbox cooker is that you can cook things like stew, mince and other things that have liquid ingredients but you can also put pies and other frozen foods in them.

    Another great vid Steve. I am a huge Travel buddy fan and sadly on my second as I drowned the first.
    The two sizes both have pro's and con's. I like the small unit, its certainly big enough for us howerver the 6amp power consumption is what attracts me to the smaller unit as I can run it in camp. The larger unit has adjustable heat setting and potentially great for larger families. 10amp power consumption certainly up there, replacing the 12v cigarette plug with a Anderson style plug is advised.
    As you know its all about the pre-heating.
    Great vid mate :)

    Have yet to try and cook something from raw. Good in the truck during a long shift.

    I won a travel buddy many years ago when I lived in NZ used it to warm pies and one occasion cooked a rolled pork joint that was cooked on the way to our campsite. I turned up and by the time we set up for the night the joint was cooked to perfection. The guys we were camping with were very jealous when the kids and I sat down to eat. Those trays look good but susspect they will be too expensive to ship to the UK.

    Cheap one is great I have had one for quite a few years, put stuff in an oven proof container like Pyrex and it cooks very well, you just need something to stop the food sticking to the bottom so you should have left them unwrapped and just placed them on top of foil. Also you can cook up in the cans with canned food that's why the cheapy is so deep with lid on.

    • @Australian4x4Adventures

    Local store had the cheapy for $25 so I couldn't pass it up. Chucked a couple of pies In there when heading out of town. They crisped up fine. I don't recommend wrapping the food in foil, 'cause it will go soggy.
    Defintely some pros for the Travel Buddy though.

    Hot lunch on the go with the $50 jobbie. The wife grabs it and a cold pie and lasagne from the fridge behind the seats. Sits it on the floor and In half an hour we have a hot lunch to eat that we dont have to stop for. Just crack the lid for the last 10 or so for a crispy finish. I wouldn't give up that luxury. Everything else the weber can do when your stopped.

    the cheap food reheater has served us well and can also be used as a slow cooker. Frozen pastries cook up crisp if you let the unit vent for the last ten minutes of cooking. we cook two by frozen pies for twenty mins then flip them over for the next twenty mins, come out just like a bakery pie, ( halve the time for sausage rolls ) We use take-away foil frays, which are cheap as chips, for reheating casseroles or stews, foil-lined lid on or off - depending on what you are reheating, never had a flop. Travel buddies might be the ants pants, but the $50 unit is no slouch and can do a great meal.

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  5 років тому +2

      Indeed. It did impress me for value for money that’s for sure.
      I’m sure I needed to learn how to use it to be completely fair to the cheaper unit.
      The only fair way I could think of is to cook in both units as described in the instructions by both units but I’m sure there’s a trick to both to make them both perform better.

    The lunch box one i use in my work 4bee and it cooks pies and pastries awesome. All you need to do is open it and fold the locking latch in to hold the lid cracked open for the last 5 or 10 mins and they crisp up easy.

    The 50 dollar job (Same as the BCF one) pulls a constant 8amps from my watt meter test.
    Most cig sockets in cars are only rated to 120 watts or 10amp, so they generally don't go over that.

  • @ruralrebel
    @ruralrebel 4 роки тому

    The no name one looks like a road pro. If so the seal is not to make it waterproof. If you look there are vent cut outs for steam. I like the concept of the travel ovens. I like the higher heat to crisp up food. If you are looking for another good travel option check out the hot logic. I have 3 2 minis and a larger one. Cook at a much lower temp (165°f) so it cooks slower. Won’t cool all the same, but great if you leave food in and it’s on. Doesn’t dry it out. Use Pyrex dishes with lids. I would like to have both and use the together for family road trips. Could make killer food on the go

    food goes soggy when wrapped in foil - just put the food on a foil tray from Coles or Woolies in the cheaper oven & it will come up real nice & crispy...you can cook delicious honey soy chicken wings in the cheap oven that way too. Travel Buddy is Australian made and built to last. The cheaper 12v oven i have had one b4 and all i can say it that sucker was drawing around the 10amp mark, I gave it a go put a few pies in there from half frozen pulled up 2 hours later they was soggy as anything and still half cold, plus a big one to keep a eye on is the cords, now i had a friends one where the power cord melted, being that i do electronics checked the plug and cord, all i can say is piss poor quality and he almost lost his vehicle in the process because the cord got so hot it started to burn. I will support Australian made travel buddy any day.

    i don't think this is a true comparison. TB is a oven and the Lunch Box is slow cooker. I have made great meals in the lunch box stove. If you want to make things that aren't soggy. Raise the food above the heating element and leave the lid slightly open after 30min of cooking pending time and do not wrap the food. Your leak test was not needed if you look at back corners of the seal there are channels to let some of the steam out. I think for safety reasons. Have a look at a YT member i think the name is 12v cooking. He does some great things with the 12v lunch box.
    BTW the amp rating on mine is 12A. So you are looking at aprox 144W

      Because it has a seal and says on the instructions it’s water tight.
      It wasn’t.
      It’s not a bad little over but I still much prefer my travel buddy over it.

    • @Australian4x4Adventures
      @Australian4x4Adventures  5 років тому

      Hahaha. Agreed. I was just trying to follow the instructions of the oven which told me I had to wrap them in foil so it didn’t touch the bottom of the tray 🤷🏿‍♂️🤷🏿‍♂️. I did un wrap them after the 30 min mark to let the breath a little better so they were just sitting on the foil.

      I actual l thought it was fair. The instructions say " wrap it in foil" you wrap it in foil. Follow the instructions (or omit if there is no instruction to make you do so) and youve got a fair test. Thats only my opinion.

    Video is nice. It does demonstrate that one needs to know how to use your cooking devices. I can cook and it is clear to me the travel buddy is the better 12 volt oven. Inside volume and rack tray abilities, it is the clear winner. It's worth the x5 the price of the lunch box oven. Have you ever tried the ovens that sit on top of a burner or grill? They are worth a look if you want to be sure you can start your vehicle in the morning. ;-)

    We have 2 of the cheap ones. Cost $17 from dick smith when they were closing down. Put a trivet in the bottom then it will do pies no problem. To make yourself super popular do hot jam donuts on your next snow 4x4 trip.

  • @Renaldo135

    You paid too much for the Road Pro 12v one anyway. My wife got mine for $33. Can't wait to try it out. I work out of my car and run calls for service twelve to fourteen hour days...I wonder if it does better if you "don't" add water since it's so soggy anyway. My main dish would be casseroles anyway so soggy is fine i guess. Chilli and stew and Rice and Chicken together maybe noddles too would be great.
