    THEORY: The lick never existed, it was only by coincidence did someone link various unrelated musical examples together and give it a name. Given enough time, literally any 7-note phrase can become “The Lick”.
    Rant over.
    Also, did that guy actually say Socially Awkward Penguin in 2019?

    Its also because its such a simple pattern. It's basically just the beginning of an natural minor scale, which is used pretty everywhere.

    band kid here. I know a tenor sax and a bass clarinet who _do not_ stop playing this thing.
    i asked them what it was one time, and in unison they replied, "The lick," because apparently this is a universal fact known to all
    my confusion has waned after watching this video

      I was also in a band and 2 friends of my kept adding the lick and I was so confused but it fit so well in the songs we were playing with our instrument each practice and concert we did.

      I think this became a meme before we were born - i played in the high school big band back in '06 and putting this in solos was already a running gag there. That video is awesome though.

      @@Kov89 that’s true! It was a running joke in Boston at NEC and Berklee circa 2009 which is where I learned about it. I don’t remember it in the 90s when I was in high school though.
