#WhatIsMusic
i saw someone refer to the lick as "the wilhelm scream of music"
Holy shit😂 this is incredible
"... while its origin is still a little unclear, its home is undoubtedly in jazz", that line is classy.
It's the Willhelm Scream for musicians.
Yess
I was just about to make this comment.
*ADAM NEELY WANTS TO KNOW YOUR LOCATION*
THEORY: The lick never existed, it was only by coincidence did someone link various unrelated musical examples together and give it a name. Given enough time, literally any 7-note phrase can become “The Lick”.
Rant over.
Also, did that guy actually say Socially Awkward Penguin in 2019?
The Licc is a social construct
I provoke the power of all music player in the world to make the next lick roll
Its also because its such a simple pattern. It's basically just the beginning of an natural minor scale, which is used pretty everywhere.
All types of minor scales (obv excluding modes)
When learning piano I was given an exercise to practice this lick in all 12 keys. I'm still learning it.
THE L I C C
"While it's origin is a little unclear, it's home is undoubtedly in jazz" .... finds it in Stravinsky
haha yes, got here from Stravinsky's the Firebird, which had it
🤣
band kid here. I know a tenor sax and a bass clarinet who _do not_ stop playing this thing.
i asked them what it was one time, and in unison they replied, "The lick," because apparently this is a universal fact known to all
my confusion has waned after watching this video
I was also in a band and 2 friends of my kept adding the lick and I was so confused but it fit so well in the songs we were playing with our instrument each practice and concert we did.
Lmao stuff like this reminds me that the youth are doing great.
I was in orchestra and to piss off our conductor we would just break into Habanera at random intervals
As a non native English speaker, after so many years, I can finally understand what the hell is "The Lick". This was really educative, thanks!
Didn't know about the meme, but definitely have heard the lick. Now I shall bring the lick wherever I go.
I’m so proud that this is what our government is spending our money on
Adam Neely's Aussie uncle.
The Australian government spent money on this.
Smiles in Jazz.
Question: How this lick took over the music world
Answer: I don't know, memes
Did I just hear the *LICC* there?
nah
Something tells me Dan watches Adam Neely.
Thanks. Now I'm gonna hear it everywhere.
When he said yeet and its lit fam inside😫😫😫😫😫
fortnite GOATS
Aussie Neely
Why did you put the pick up note before the actual lick?
Bugged the shit outta me
I swear it's in GTA somewhere too
Its on the jazz radio station on GTA 4 (Chet Baker - let's get lost)
So was the song moanin - art Blakey featured in this video. Lol
Yeet.
That is lit fam
*Dab*
Was that Tyler The Creator’s real dad? @1:16
WHAT THE
What that actually hell
LOL
thank you Australia now i finally know what my jazz musician friends are talking about
love it! thanks a lot
the production of this is t h i c c
Isn’t it ironic that among teenagers “lick” is now slang for “theft”?
It's cftcjgxbjdxvjy
It is what it is but jazzists at least were not freebooters
Devious
it’s been used since the nineties
Devious lick
When I listened to the original lick from the Firebird Suite, I immediately thought of Leaving Hogwarts from the Harry Potter soundtrack.
So many artists, so many sounds, yet a singular medium of communication!
Thank you for this explanation! I think heard it in Oye Como Va for the first time...
That is lit fam * dabs *
Sheesh yaas
So, this is the dude who worked on the soundtrack of Untitled Goose Game, very impressive...
Short and to the point!! Love it! Thank you!!
Thank you, The Australian Government

does someone know what concert the clip in 2:02 is from? somehow i like the vibe of it and would like to see more
Player - baby come back!
this mans head movement makes me want to kiss him. im a straight male
I knew I heard it before haha from Oye Como Va
This dude sounds like vaati
I guess it's sort of, you look for something, you hear it.
the lick is basically "please" but in music
no one knows the origin, but its understood by everyone
what?
Please has a well documented etymology
if it were "please", it would end unresolved, since "please?" is a question.
I don’t see any connection, what are you talking about?
Cool
The lick is superior
do you mean the mario kart lick
no
That one is different
Traditions people, traditions
it's called "meme"
this video was uploaded before it was even a meme
@@2fifty533 The Lick video was uploaded in 2011
1:55 cute
Lfmao
BASS
What "Player" is playing, is NOT the LICC.
its a variation of it
that last line was VERY dated
The moment he said it my eyes immediately jumped to the date. I guess in 2018 it didn't feel that long ago.
Little late. Will admit that. But you should talk about Fi’ theme. More specifically, the lick
This particular lick became a meme because I made a video compilation in 2011 that went viral with a lot of help from Adam Neely and others.
👍
It was always a meme
I think this became a meme before we were born - i played in the high school big band back in '06 and putting this in solos was already a running gag there. That video is awesome though.
@@Kov89 that’s true! It was a running joke in Boston at NEC and Berklee circa 2009 which is where I learned about it. I don’t remember it in the 90s when I was in high school though.
So you put in a infocard just over you saying “yeet” “lit fam” and “dabbing” for the express purpose of making any screen capture of you saying it worthless.
Well played. 😡
how do ya do fellow kids
Bobble head
i wouldn't say it's a terribly memorable sequence. it's more a passing phrase than something substantial. can't quite see why it's become so noteworthy.
The Australian accent is hard for me to understand. Things like 1910 sound ninety-ten to me. Even closed captioning says: “It even snuck its way into naughty spot.” What naughty spot are we talking about?
“it even snuck its way into noughties pop”, referring to pop from 2000-2009
Bruh, I'm not even english speaker and can understand it perfectly
Mate, not every place is America, move on with your bloody life.
You need more exposure to foreign accents friend, that was a very clear video for me and I live no where near Australia.
Lies, lies lies. Christina didn't sing that line in that particular clip. Shame on you ABC
?
This is kind of dumb. There's a bunch of licks and stuff like chord progressions that's found all over. Not just this one lick.
Yes
There are other licks.
But this one...
This is THE lick
no this is different
HERESY
Never heard it before.
Your mother hates you
Jazz sucks.
Swallows
yeah
You suck
