Great video, thanks for sharing. I have a ABA set of Marx Rock Island E7 plastic diesels with the same paint scheme. Marx didn't make any passenger cars for their E7's so making some is a great idea.
When spray painting: always start spraying off the model and don't interrupt the flow until you complete the stroke. Starting and stopping mid-stroke can cause droplets to form on your model. If the pressure in the can drops, put it in a pan of warm water for awhile. The heat will increase spray pressure for more uniform results.
That set of Lionel 2400 series cars was in good shape. I would have sold them and ordered a much worse set of cars to repaint. The painting and lettering looks good.
Those letters definitely made it pop! In all honesty though those were a little on the rough side and they were painted originally anyway. If one were to want to put them back correctly it’s just a paint job away from being restored to original configuration. They look great!
To do the Lionel Lines and name plate lettering, you could use a plexiglass plate and hard rubber ink roller (available at Michael's used for rubber stamping) with the appropriate color acrylic paint and roll over the raised lettering with a thin layer of paint (the plexiglass plate used to get the paint spread out thin and evenly).

I use oven cleaner to strip the old paint that contains nicks. And follow up pretty much the same as you show. I have not done any passenger car but quite a number of diesel engine shells. Heat stamped areas need sanding and filling if you want different graphics. Stick on individual transfers (white, red, black, gold, & silver) covers well if you want the same lettering/numbers. Yes Amazon has everything. I find these stick on’s nicer looking compared to water decals, not having clear edges that show against the paint. Very nice presentation.😊 I like the striping you did on the passenger cars better than Lionel did on the engines. I would be tempted to make engines match passenger cars. Nice.
Nice video. The shells on those cars looked to be in good shape. I have a set that I bought for 55 bucks, that is in real good shape and my two originals from my brother's set are in good shape, also, so I don't want to mess with them. I have a few that are roached-out and I would like to paint them in Tuscan Red, to run behind my 681 or 2025 Pennsy engines. Those lettering inserts are pretty cool, too. Are they a soft or hard material? Also, are they pliable enough as to make sure that you can manipulate them into the heat-stamp? Either way, those cars turned out real nice. As always, an excellent tutorial and video.
It require the heat stamped area be sanded to remove a bit of the rough lip to allow better adhesion. The size match up is near perfect using the letters from Amazon. I have yet to find the numbers (like 2023 Alco engine) in the same font as the Amazon letters. Handing requires awareness as not as durable as paint/heat stamp.
Awesome custom job, they look amazing. That white pinstriping really set it off, and the gold lettering was definitely the way to go. 💯

The cars seem to match the engines as something that Lionel would have offered if the thought of it. I do like the results.
