I’m a first-time viewer. That was an excellent and very insightful review. I found it helpful and is going to help guide me in the hunt for a trolling motor for the Pro Angler 14. Thank you for producing this video.
Lots of good information. It is a lot of money to spend but I can see why you like it. The weight advantage alone is worth it. So much easier than hauling a deep cycle battery. Very good list of pros and cons.
Great info. Thanks for filming it. I've been trying to scheme up a cheaper way to rig my 2005 Hobie Tandem and my 2008 Outback with the lesser expensive options. The Water snake is too inexpensive for me and likely has a top speed of about 3 mph. I don't trust it to be reliable for that price. Larger motors need bigger transom mounts, bigger batteries. You addressed that with your talk about how you didn't like the transom mount on your last motor. You helped me decide not to start rigging up some crazy, homemade side mount that would likely be riddled with unplanned issues. Perhaps the $2200 cost of the Evolve is worth it. It's a total package. Turnkey. The battery is there and it's light and it floats. The motor fits the Hobie brand in both the well and/or the rudder... For my tandem, I'm usually alone in it, so I have the front well just sitting there doing nothing. I could mount the Evolve in the front well, and keep the mirage drive active in the pilot's well. Thanks for helping me get my head on straight. Sometimes you need to just spend the doe. You get what you pay for.
Thanks James! Glad you found it helpful. The cost was a big deterrent for me initially but I have been using it for 10 months now and I absolutely love it. I did have one issue where it gave me an e45 code and wouldn’t run. Torqeedo replaced the motor within a few days though. All in all I am very happy with it.
Good review.......good that you take the time and effort doing this......for sure going to give info to help someone decide to get the motor or not. That’s quite a setup. I spent almost 40 years in the missile/radar field yet my fascination with technology grows each day. That’s a lot of power in a small package.
Very informative Justin. I went for the watersnake because of the price. But I have to register and title my yak as a boat. Can't wait for the next video.
I love my Hobie Evolve in place of the rudder. I hated it in the Mirage Drive area. Knocked around and was loud. I like to motor (5.25 mph) to where I'm going to fish and then use the Mirage Drive once I get there.
I kinda liked it in the mirage drive slot but the vibration and noise is noticeable on the camera so I can’t use it there and film. I am definitely enjoying it though. Thanks for watching!
Wow, a very good vdo of adding a motor to the kayak. U gave a quick comparison of other motor mounts & decided the on the choice U made. Ultimately, U have 2 b happy with the choice bcuz U'll b spending many hrs on the kayak. Thx 4 sharing on Utube. Happy kayaking, & fishing.
Thank you. Excellent succinct summary. This is the exact question I am currently facing. Interesting to note that you sold the NuCanoe Frontier with bow mounted Minn Kota because of the excess weight. Cheers.
Thanks Jamie! Good luck with whichever motor you decide to go with. I loved the bow mount but it was just too much weight and unsafe on the Nucanoe when the wind kicked up where I fish.
Always enjoy your vids thank you for being honest. So many UA-cam fisherman are only trying to sell the product even if it's total garbage. Have a good day and stay safe Jimmy from Massachusetts
Very informative Justin. You could be a spokesman. You may get a offer with that presentation. It amazes me to see you pull those monster cats out of the water Into that kayak. Yeah I'll be honest I'm jealous. We are always hunting monsters like that.
Thanks Tom! I appreciate the compliment. I have no desire to be a spokesperson. I just knew I was going to get asked a lot of questions and it is a more efficient use of my time to spend an hour making a video where I answer them all at once versus having to spend 20 minutes answering them each time an individual reached out. Thank you for watching!
I like the idea of a trolling motor for drifting, but my concern about getting one is that I'm just adding to the list of more stuff for a fish to get my line hung up on. I seem to find enough snags as it is.
They should use this video for a commercial. At the end of it, we could have me sewing up Sasquatch’s arm. That would be a cool video. Think we could get Steve to help us?
First off, thank you for the "how to" video and explanation of the evolve motor. I know this video is about 4 years old, so I don't even know if Hobie sells them. Should I be able to get one, how is the battery recharged? I haven't seen that information anywhere, other than buying the optional solar panel.
Rutter mount seems the best, if you run out of power you can slap your peddles in and have another way to get back to launch, granted you’ll still have paddle too
Great video & excellent demonstration, thanks. I have a Oasis tandem and looking at motor options i like the Evolve but in Australia the price comes in at $3,600 supply only with the watersnake option only $ 1,000 with similar type battery.
$2150. Even that is pretty ridiculous if you ask me. It is the same motor as the torqeedo 403 which is $1799. The extra cost is basically just for the Hobie mounts.
@@KayakCatfish Wow you guys have good purchasing prices compared to Australians we seem to pay a premium for everything even when it's made here. Do you have to register the boat when you add a motor? I live in Texas and was told by Parks & Wildlife that adding any motor of any kind required a titled boat with registration.
Kayak Catfish Thank You very much. It’s still in the beginner stages but you can still check it out. I posted a couple of videos which I took from my phone if you’re interested. I appreciate the support. Cheers!
Great video. Concise and to the point. Question: I have both the 2018 OB and an SS127 Bonafide, the former for saltwater, latter for freshwater bass, crappie, small lake and reservoir fishing - leaning toward Bixpy due to price, remote over throttle box both would probably be stern mounted. Use for maneuvering, holding, position, possible trolling. Maybe at lowest speed would be jog remote between lowest speed to off depending on wind current - what is your opinion regarding the fit and functionality over Torqeedo?
Thanks! I don’t really know much about the performance or quality of Bixpy motors. Once I realized I wouldn’t be able to troll at the lower speeds that I typically use, I immediately moved on as that was a deal breaker for me. I hope you enjoy whichever motor you end up going with though.
If they only had some kind of break away system so you could use it in the mirage drive position without potentially damaging your kayak or motor. Our lakes are filled with stumps.
I never leave comments, But I had to today - you did a great job describing in detail the pros & cons. Loved the pace of the video, and loaded with info.
I actually prefer the mirage drive option. The motor performs much better there. Unfortunately, the vibration from motor affects the audio on my front camera when in the mirage drive slot so I moved the motor back to the rudder. If I wasn’t doing UA-cam, I would definitely use it in the mirage drive slot.
Had a question. You mentioned the Bixpy and its pros and cons. One thing that I haven't been able to find out is the relative power of the Bixpy vs the Torqeedo (Hobie Evolve) motors. [BTW: Very helpful video about the Hobie Evolve.]
Justin hope your doing well. Is there anyway you can find me the link to this exact motor kit. I’ve tried looking on the website but could not find it. Thanks!
The nice thing about going with an electric motor is that you can mount them on pretty much any paddle kayak. There are lots of high end paddle kayaks on the market today. I would suggest hitting up a demo day at a local dealer so you can try several different brands and models to see which will best suit your needs.

Can you rig a line to pull to latch in tilted up position to reduce drag while pedaling?...Nice informative video..Hobie should hire you to consult on design!
Quality hasn’t been great. I have had two motor pylons tear up and a battery that wouldn’t charge. Customer service was excellent each time and everything was replaced under warranty. Nevertheless, it is still frustrating to spend this much and have so many things go wrong within the first two years. I love it when it works though.
Kayak Catfish I’ve heard similar things...i know their customer service is great but it does make me nervous. No better option out there unfortunately.
The motor pylon has been replaced twice and the battery had an issue where it wouldn’t charge. Customer service was excellent each time and all items were replaced under warranty. It is still frustrating to have so much go wrong in roughly 18 months. I do love it when it works properly though.
Kayak Catfish Can you replace the pylon in the Evolve yourself or you have to send the mount in? And do you get a renewed 2yr warranty on the new pylon?
The pylon is pretty easy to replace in the Evolve Mount. Only takes a few minutes. As for the warranty, it is 2 years from original purchase date. You don’t get a new two year warranty each time they replace a pylon.
did see the distance of the battery and or length of cable of battery to propeller makes a difference of usage of energy because movement of the battery juice at farther distance impacts battery life during the day.. shorter distance more life of battery....good info..

Justin I’m considering making the investment in the torqueedo. But reading some reviews mentions problems with error code 30 and 45 which are both bad news.. any feeling or feedback with your tooqueedo?
I have had the same issues. In the two years that I have owned it, I have had two motor pylons replaced under warranty and a battery that wouldn’t charge. Customer service was excellent each time but it is still very frustrating to have that many issues with a motor at that price range. I love it when it works but I have hated myself for buying it every time it has left me stranded.
Kayak Catfish thank Justin for the feedback. Looking forward to your next video. I enjoyed today’s especially the comments about rec boaters.. I’m the same fish during the week if possibly. Normally have the river to myself..
I love it when it works. The quality leaves a lot to be desired though. I have had two motor pylons tear up and a battery that wouldn’t charge. Customer service has been great each time and they have replaced the damaged items with brand new parts but it is still frustrating to spend that much and have so many things go wrong in less than 2 years.
Yes, if you run it wide open the battery will run out in 30-45 minutes. The key is to run it slightly under full throttle. Instead of going 5mph, I cut it back to 4.5 to 4.7mph. This increases the run time significantly.
Kayak Catfish Makes sense. But you know how guys are..need for speed. Even if it is only 5 mph. Lol Thanks for the answer and an awesome review brother.
So I’m a Kayak lover. Don’t hate me, but at the point you are putting motors on a Kayak, shouldn’t you consider a John Boat? It’s probably lighter than a Kayak. At this point, it’s likely cheaper. It has more space. It’s more stable...
Don’t confuse cost of purchase with cost of ownership. Yes a Jon boat is cheaper up front but you are going to have to put fuel in the gas motor to power it. As much as I fish, that would cost me several hundred dollars per year just in gas.You will also need a truck or suv to tow it and launch it at some of the places I fish at. With a kayak, I can tow it with a small car which gets me 32mpg while hauling the kayak and never costs me a dime in gas or oil. Plus it is just a hell of a lot more fun catching fish in a kayak than a Jon boat.
Does anyone know of a place to buy a twist n stow option I have the drive unit but not that one and I can’t seem to find it! Or if anyone has one they want to sell!
Are you just needing the rudder mount? If so, I have an extra that Hobie sent me as a warranty replacement due to the paint wearing off my original one.
I always knew that one day eventually you would produce a useful video instead of making us look at your face for 25 minutes each video. We had to wait a really, really long time but that day has arrived. The first thing I learned is that you have access to a little pond where you have dumped a few giant catfish and that's where you do a lot of your fishing. Hard to get skunked there when the fish are starving. I hate to admit this review was almost as good as some of the reviews I make. You probably had to do a lot of takes. I hope that Torqeedo doesn't produce a lot of wake and disturb the real purist non sellout kayakers who may be fishing in your area. At least now when they threaten to kick your ass they can never catch you as you speed back to the launch.
I’m glad this review lived up to the Adventure Outdoors channel standards. I thought about making it 25 minutes long just for you because I know how much you like to hear me talk.
Don’t worry Justin. Adventure outdoors is jelled. Your worst video was viewed +75k times and his best only 700. I made video of my orange tree and have more people viewed compared to adventure outdoors best video. Very funny guy and need help from good doctor.
Hola amigo me gustaría tener uno pero no cuento con el recurso no se si usted me podría donar uno de segunda mano para vivir al máximo la pesca en un kayak
A Honda is a reliable car that will get you from point A to point B but yet many people still prefer to pay up for the luxury of a Mercedes. No different in the kayak world.
Justin, this is the most competent, comprehensive, truthful product review I have ever seen, bar none. Well done.

Thanks! Wow. $3600 is pretty steep. I love the evolve but it would be hard to justify paying that much for it.
@@KayakCatfish Q : how much are they in USA
$2150. Even that is pretty ridiculous if you ask me. It is the same motor as the torqeedo 403 which is $1799. The extra cost is basically just for the Hobie mounts.

Thanks, you previously had purchased a bow mounted trolling motor. Based on your video comments I figure that you might’ve sold it.
Yes. I sold the bow mount. The motor was great but it was too heavy for the front of the kayak.

Thanks Mike! I appreciate the positive feedback.
When you have it in the mirage drive, how deep does the propeller set in the water? How shallow can you still get without hitting the blade on bottom?
I’m not sure. I didn’t think to measure it when I made the video and I currently have it mounted on my rudder.
Very good video answers a lot of questions I had.
Thanks Daniel! Glad you found the video helpful.
How accurate are the power draw numbers on the readout? thanks for the video.
From my experience, they have been very accurate. I rarely ever run the battery all the way down on a trip though.
Justin, do you prefer the rudder option better? Which did you decide on after a couple of outings?
I actually prefer the mirage drive option. The motor performs much better there. Unfortunately, the vibration from motor affects the audio on my front camera when in the mirage drive slot so I moved the motor back to the rudder. If I wasn’t doing UA-cam, I would definitely use it in the mirage drive slot.
Do you take your mirage drive with you on the water "just in case?"
No but I should probably do that. My torqeedo actually broke down the other day so I had to paddle.
Kayak Catfish wait... it broke down? Why what happened? Just bought one and want to prepare for it.
is this a good setup for bay/saltwater fishing? I am looking for a setup for fishing the chesapeake bay (crabbing, and fishing)

I’m not sure they are making them anymore. You might want to reach out to Hobie or Torqeedo directly.
Found it. Thx man. I told the wife last night that this has to happen. She ask if I'll get lonely. I said nope!
Haha!
Very informative and detail review! ill end up getting one of these for my PA14 later down the road.
Thanks! It’s a great tool to have.
what do you think of the old town auto 136 and the drive system,or would you still use the Hobie Torqeedo.
The Torqeedo has a faster top speed but the Old Town with i-Pilot is much quieter and has all those gps functions that make fishing a lot easier.

When you put a motor on your kayak... you're required to Register the kayak in Tennessee as ya do for a boat...
Right?
Woody Woodman Maybe, but only in some areas. I know you dont need to in Texas
Travis Horton I could be wrong... but I Think you have to in Tennessee... i asked him, cause i think he is too!

In my opinion... a battery powered motor shouldnt require it... but ya know how fish n game can be!

It varies per state but here in Tennessee, you are required to register it like a boat and pay the $13 per year for tags.
That's all!? Figured itd be High! Thanks... keep on keeping on!
Ya got me modifying my kayaks... its addictive! Lol

I’m not sure if you can buy the Evolve with the 915 battery but it would be great if you could. I would definitely like to have the bigger battery.
If I was to motorized my kayak roughly how much do you need to pay to register it? I’m in Georgia btw got anyone in that area that might have one!
Tennessee charges $13 per year for registration. Not sure about Georgia.
Kayak Catfish ok Just wanted a ball park idea that’s not bad at all! Thanks
Fantastic! Been wondering about a powered add on.
Thank you for watching!
The only thing that you forgot is, What the price of the unit was?
Nobody is perfect. I figured if a person is interested enough in this motor to be researching it via UA-cam, they already knew the price.
Excellent Review Thanks
Good presentation. Good info
Thank you!
Very informative review, I enjoyed 👍 👍
Thank you for watching!
Anything change since youve own it? Am considering buying the V2 but $2800 is a little steep.
Do we have to register a boat if we have this
Depends on the state. Check your local laws.
Thanks!
Wow just found your video and it’s awesome thanks
This motor might be good, but is very expensive,i think i stick with the water snake motor.
The torqeedo do does price a lot of people out of the market. Hopefully as more competition comes along, prices will go down. Thanks for watching!
hornet The water snake?
Very good video thank you
Thank you for watching!
Very informative
Ok. So rumor has it that it only gets 30 minutes max at full throttle on a full charge. Is this accurate?
Yes, if you run it wide open the battery will run out in 30-45 minutes. The key is to run it slightly under full throttle. Instead of going 5mph, I cut it back to 4.5 to 4.7mph. This increases the run time significantly.
Kayak Catfish
Makes sense. But you know how guys are..need for speed. Even if it is only 5 mph. Lol
Thanks for the answer and an awesome review brother.
I understand. Even when I am going full speed, I always want to go a little faster. Especially if I am cold or bad weather is coming lol.
Very helpful.
The video isn't finished yet so I might be jumping the gun but please tell me about saltwater environment as far as corrosion
It is supposedly rated for use in saltwater. I have never used it in that environment so I can’t speak as to how well it holds up though.
Fish are our friends :)
Thanks for watching!
Amazing vid keep it up
Thanks Emily!
hello, has anyone used the hobie ruder but upgraded "if its possible" to the torpedo 3hp?
Thanks
Can the motor controlled remotely?
Unfortunately, it can only be controlled by the throttle box.
Nice option
Thanks! I am enjoying it.
Thanks good info
How well does it operate in the ocean??
It is saltwater capable but I haven’t had it in the ocean
How much for this motor ?
Awesome. Thanks
Kayak Catfish yes!! How much would you sell it for!
I will take $150 for it.
I love to catfish for channel on the bear river I’d Idaho but the Tennessee river looks much better
We do have a great fishery here.
Good video where can I get one of those shirts at
Thanks! I appreciate you watching and being interested in a shirt. They are available on Amazon at the link below. amzn.to/2E41zFW
Have you ever fallen off your kayak?
Not yet
thumbs up
Thanks Ray!
2:38 Endurance, not range. Range is always a distance, a time interval is endurance.
Hola amigo me gustaría tener uno pero no cuento con el recurso no se si usted me podría donar uno de segunda mano para vivir al máximo la pesca en un kayak
But none of you saw the price
A Honda is a reliable car that will get you from point A to point B but yet many people still prefer to pay up for the luxury of a Mercedes. No different in the kayak world.
I should get a new mic
I hope that Pelican will come out this one like Hobie....!! NOT 😟 😡😡😡😡
U
that boat looks like a kids toy to me too small
The price is ridiculous, may as well buy a Jon boat and a 9.9 have a good day fishing 🤔👍
It is ridiculously priced for sure.
