It's amazing how much simpler your life becomes when you stop giving a shit about things that don't really matter. I used to be constantly worried about what others thought of me and then Carlin came along and changed all that.
Unfortunately most people spend their whole life trying to stay on that safe middle class path and try to please everyone, themselves, family, parents, neighbors, coworkers. have to get married, have kids, have a big house, have the nice car, maintain a particular image that satisfies the people around you. thankfully carlin realized, not too late, that is a crap way of life. Be real.
I didn't use to like Carlin, I thought he was brash, offensive, and mean. But the older I get the more value and wisdom I find in what he says. Great clip.
More than just a comedian -- a courageous thinker and writer, and an actor -- and the best comedian I've ever seen or heard -- the smartest, the funniest and the best master of the English language among them all.
People get worked up over the pettiest, most insignificant details. I did it and I still do it, but far less than I used to. George Carlin was one of the biggest influences in helping me understand that most things in life aren't worth clinging to. Find the few things that are truly worthwhile and screw everything else. Thank you, George, for teaching me that lesson.
Richard Pryor had a similar epiphany of his stage persona & career approach. They stopped trying to be "Bill Cosby" & "Danny Kaye" and started being themselves.
Time is being kind to him and I’m glad to see it. People look at his whole body of work now and go “wow, he’s brilliant” while the rest of us have been saying that for decades . His voice will continue to be some Professor Emeritus from the stars telling us all what we should be doing instead of the bullshit we waste our precious lives on. It’s been ten years but I still feel his loss. Thank you George .
@jcarp179 I think what he means by "don't give a shit" is you should only care about the things that you want to care about, not what other people want you to care about. And that is good advice.
One of the most intelligent minds to hit comedy since the beginning of broadcast television. You will always be cherished and dearly missed. RIP George
hearing true wisdom is like experiencing the first rain after a long drought, it's food for the soul truth is a rare commodity in this world, but it's unmistakable when you hear it
This touched me. He is right on the mark though. Essentially he's saying "To thine own self be true". I try to tell anyone who will listen how truly important that is.The TRULY difficult part, is to remember it myself, LOL.
When it cuts at 2:59 it cuts a part of the interview where he recall taking mescaline and acid, and talks about how they opened up windows and made him see thing differently and that's the main reason which caused him to "see his place."
He didn't say it's important not to give a shit. He obviously did give a shit, and struggled to find his right direction. He just said it's important to know, or remember, when you're doing things you don't give a shit about, that make you forget your identity and what you're really about.
The older I get, the more I identify with him. Still, even when I was young and watched his HBO specials, I thought he was the funniest guys out there.
No matter how your life turns out, you will always have your ups and downs. You'll be alright most of the time, no matter rich or poor. Don't worry too much about what's to come. This is how I'm trying to live my life. But it's not that easy when you have a girlfriend who wants to plan every fucking detail in her (our) life.
rip George you have Shedd a lot of light on dark situation you always spoke your mind we have all learned from your wisdom and I wish America shared your individual thoughts bc that's what they want to do away with is individualism and free minded people they want " obedient workers "as said by the great George carlin
It's unfortunate.. I feel like I am very similar to who he was when he was discovering himself.. No free speech movement, no compassion movement.. all technology and lifestyles are growing slowly so there is no way to be a "logic comedian" like he was. It's just a shitty place with no room for people who don't give a shit anymore.
I saw him in the 70`s. High and laughing my ass off. It wasn`t until much later his ideas on life made sense. Well.....most of them. His delivery and muggin` for the camera are the best.
It's so difficult to adopt this attitude. Especially with my writing. being influenced and molded by society for 22 years has just made me soft. I need George Carlin to slap some sense into me. xD
MANY OF US COULD SAY THE SAME AS CARLIN DOES HERE. The Woodstock generation and the Sixties were full of people like Carlin. He just had a comedic talent and got LUCKY. Most of commercial success is just luck, being in the right place at the right time.
This video captures some of the greatest moments in the history of humanity where a person thought of some great ideas over time and he shared them with the future generations.
Can listen to Carlin all day. His early story and self-discovery amid success sounds a lot like John Lennon's---playing up to stupid shit till you can't do it anymore, and then you begin to live.
"Christian Folk"?, Where did you get that from? God has nothing to do with my decision not to steal. I am an Atheist. Experience poverty? I was born and raised in Brooklyn. I am about 10 years younger than George Carlin. According to what I have read about George Carlin and his childhood, he was more fortunate than I. Boredom; In Brooklyn??...I never spent a bored day in my life. Judging; I have so many friends who have been incarcerated. I still hang out with them. George Carlin is so much funnier than any other comedian I have ever heard. He is great. I love his observations. My observation; not as poor as you think; his family paid for Catholic School. My family could not afford that. He was not feeding his family by stealing. According to his dialogue he claims he never went along with society. Perhaps he DID; "go along" to get along with the crowd he chose to hang around with. Stealing is bad. Mischief has a broad range. Stealing was not a requirement to obtain the street experience that led to his success as a comedian. In the meantime, let's all try to make fun of guys named Todd.
I believe it is that most people that do, connect to him because they too were on the streets and kind of, well not the going along to get along types.
I hope that you are making the Haven smile George ! we are approaching 2017 and we are missing you. I wish that you were here with us to see what's going on, you would've probably make a lot of crazy and hilarious jokes. And every one of those jokes would have reflected our reality today. ...hmmm maybe, who knows, maybe you are looking at all of this right now. Love and Respect.
George was one of the few people who wasn't brainwashed
by society's bullshit and had the guts to tell the truth.
"Use your talents to project your ideas, not to try to please people". Amazing advice from a legend.
It's amazing how much simpler your life becomes when you stop giving a shit about things that don't really matter. I used to be constantly worried about what others thought of me and then Carlin came along and changed all that.
he was actually more of a humorous philosopher than a mere comedian.
I needed to hear George speak, he's one of my life coaches.
George Carlin made more sense than any preacher or politician in world history.
Just love this guy. Wish he was still around..
Absolutely. Carlin's best advice has always been critical thinking.
I didn't use to like Carlin, I thought he was brash, offensive, and mean. But the older I get the more value and wisdom I find in what he says. Great clip.
some people deserve to be immortal...
George Carlin is one of the most unique souls to ever exist on this planet. I miss him.
More than just a comedian -- a courageous thinker and writer, and an actor -- and the best comedian I've ever seen or heard -- the smartest, the funniest and the best master of the English language among them all.

What a brilliant man he was, still hits the feels
Someone has to make a movie on his life. But who would play him?
Richard Pryor had a similar epiphany of his stage persona & career approach. They stopped trying to be "Bill Cosby" & "Danny Kaye" and started being themselves.
A genius comedian who transcended comedy into philosophy, BIG TIME.
George told the truth about everything we know.

6 months before his death. So sad.
One of the most intelligent minds to hit comedy since the beginning of broadcast television. You will always be cherished and dearly missed. RIP George
I’m still doing my best to not give a shit. I’m close, but not quite there yet.
Sounds like truth to me!

One of a kind.
this is the most inspirational and motivational shit i've heard all day.
Mr. Carlin, we miss you and your courageous voice. I wonder who will take the mantle and continue the fight against mediocrity and ignorance.
Carlin, a real thinker - and he makes others start to think!
I'd thank America and the freedom of speech for sending George Carlin. What a mind.
I would give anything to have this guy's courage!

I miss George he was a genius and a prophet.
All George is saying pretty much is don't be another brick in the wall like the pink floyd song.
Goddamn I miss him so much

He mentions "Berkley" and "Free Speech" which these two things now no longer exist on that campus.
SOOOOOOOOO much more than "just a comedian". {sigh} I miss George.
Still the greatest ever.
I wish George had been my dad. Love You and Miss You!
George Carlin- a man who makes me proud to be American.
" I don't wanna put on a uniform." George Carlin
"You are all wearing uniforms" Frank Zappa
I saw him in the 70`s. High and laughing my ass off. It wasn`t until much later his ideas on life made sense. Well.....most of them. His delivery and muggin` for the camera are the best.
fucking brilliant. Its always a blessing to get insight into the minds of great artists.
It's so difficult to adopt this attitude. Especially with my writing. being influenced and molded by society for 22 years has just made me soft. I need George Carlin to slap some sense into me. xD

The realist guy ever
This video captures some of the greatest moments in the history of humanity where a person thought of some great ideas over time and he shared them with the future generations.
Holyshit! That's why he's now called St George in my town!

Carlin has always been something of a hero to me, and this further reason for... well, just that.
Loved this man
Such a phenomenal human being!
Comedic genius
"The free speech movement started in Berkley."
How ironic.
its important to care about what is important, but what the masses care too much about or care about wrongly you should not do that
That's deep
Damn I miss you George Carlin

George Carlin was a genius!

I always show his view on politicians to people.
They change almost instantly

my fucking hero, if he was still alive hed probably still be teaching and preforming
He started to wear black a lot when he got older. Anyone knows why?
Need to learn that. Not to care at all, for what anybody thinks.

I wish I knew more people George Carlin in my life.
What an icon he was. Today, who speaks up as he had ? Amazing.

Fantastic piece... Like always....
George would have been a great president!!!
I just love his horns, as well as, the man he is...
He wasn't a genius. He just had more common sense than most people.

People think this is an abnormal way of thinking when it's common sense, I love stupid people.
We miss you George. I know you're up there smiling down on us.
Wow that was beautiful.
