Gotti is a 2018 American biographical crime drama film directed by Kevin Connolly, and written by Lem Dobbs and Leo Rossi. The film is about the life of New York City mobster John Gotti and his son, John A. Gotti, and stars John Travolta, Kelly Preston, and Pruitt Taylor Vince.
The decision of putting Pitbull music in a gangster movie about Gotti is almost as nonsensical as the rapping dog from that abysmal animated Titanic film.
Oh god.
Hey fuck you Party Time is uh mastuhpiece
paRTY TIME
That's the moment most people realize they should evacuate ship
Ironic how he is called pitbull
The great thing about The Sopranos was that it showed how pathetic the lives of most gangsters are. Fighting and killing each other over scraps and being obsessed with being shown respect, but never even giving a thought to showing it to their fellows.
How many gangster flicks would show them strangling their "ma's" friend just to make the weekly earning? Only the Sopranos did.
And always ending up dying, rotting in jail or withering away in a retirement home. Great legacies, fellas.
Or the fact that their own family wouldn’t respect them, and getting respect from them should matter the most. Kind of sobering to see Tony’s family life inside the house, and the erosion of their relationships. Yeah by the end he still has his family. And they do come to love him. But to your point, it was interesting how violent and obsessed they were for respect on the streets, but back at home they don’t even have a loving respect based relationship with their own spouse and children. Pathetic.
Woah, never looked at it that way. So, apparently some things are intentionally made to look bad and petty? I guess I was a little bit too young to get into it back then. I have to give it another go. Thank you. The other Tony is my favourite character, by the way.
Donnie Brasco is another one that does a great job of deglamorizing the Mafia - showing made guys busting up parking meters to make a score.
Good idea to have the mobster character dress like the most feared of all Italian figures: Beetlejuice

Coming from someone who dated an Italian girl and had dinner with her family several times... this movie does NOT do Italian families justice. At all. Like even close.

In 2018 me and my mom visited an old Italian women and she used to ask us if we where hungry! I hope she’s doing well!
Like seriously! My stepdad is a 2nd generation Italian immigrant with 5 siblings and this movie is so inaccurate
My fiancée's Italian aunts came up to visit us and literally the first thing we talked about was cooking and food 😂
As an Italian myself, Ralph is dead on with the food section. You really have no idea how important a meal is until you've spent some time with Italians. I was on a diet once and failed because my family thought I wasn't getting enough to eat.

I really hate this trend of using current music in period pieces. In the Forest Whitaker series, Godfather of Harlem, it takes place in the 60s, but they use current hiphop and RnB all throughout. Its so distracting.
It worked in Django: Unchained
I love Hip-Hop and i agree with you.
@@m35cobol I really don't rememeber hearing hip hop all throughout Django unchained. Maybe that's an example of it being done right, when it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb.
It works in a Tarantino movie where everything’s exaggerated.
@@Yeast85 Yeah... He is brilliant with his soundtracks. I'm pretty sure the Rza had a lot to do with thr soundtrack, so I'm sure there is lots of hip-hop there but he's not about to just play like a friggin Pitbull song to try to make the movie cool... Tarantino movies are cool. Cooler than Pitbull, that's for damn sure.
This really shows these days how scared people are to have a villain protagonist. Even when it's based on a mob boss that murdered people in cold blood, they gotta make him look like the good guy.
@Justin Gary Idk how you see Thanos as a protagonist though to be fair I feel like IW doesn't even have a protagonist. And Joker had a ton of controversy so...
Justin Gary They went to great lengths to at least partially justify Joker’s kills
I'm sure it also has to do with that chode of a director thinking all these mob guys he watches in movies/tv are actual HEROES.
@Justin Gary The joker is subjective
Aren’t a lot of shows about villain protagonists? That program on adult swim... the one about the back to the future guys but now they’re related?

So glad u mentioned the food, that was seriously the most angering part of the movie for me. I'm Mexican but I had a best friend who was Italian and not ONCE did I ever leave their house hungry. If anything I had to get bigger pants every time I went over cuz we ate so damn much.
Well the fat rolls make it easier to hide the assault Rifles.
This is relatable as hell. My Italian friend made some of the best food even better than my Madré
when i was in high school i dated an italian guy and i practically lived at his house because his mom just had delicious food constantly available and LOVED feeding me. the most authentic thing about being italian is the food--red sauce, bread, sausage, meatballs, cannolis........ i miss it!!!!!
I have a friend who went to Italian lessons, taught by an Italian migrant. I can't recall very well, but it was either the teacher bringing food every Friday, or giving the assignment to bring a certain Italian dish every Friday. Either way, my friend got chubby.

"Audiences loved Gotti" Yeah, that's why they gave it a 49%
The food bit is also important because it helps to humanize the characters. Italians have strong family values and the way they tend to show it is through food. So having them sitting down to a meal, preparing a meal, talking over food helps build depth and heart in the characters or inversely causes unease and tension when something fucked up is happening while they're eating or something.
Like you follow a dude as he and his family make some pasta. It's all warm and sunny and they spend all day palling around, smooching their babies, corralling kids to keep them out the kitchen and then they sit down and some gangsters walk in and it's like a record skip. Suddenly things are tense. The gangsters sit down, they grab a plate, they eat, they say it's good but they're obviously not there for some spaghetti so you're just sitting there waiting for it and it goes on and on and the tension rises until....they get up to leave......and then they shoot the guy.
The food is just as much a character in gangster films as the people who eat it, so not having it just sucks he soul out of scenes where it belongs.
It helps show how a family works and acts around each other too. Is the table quiet? Family isn't close at all. Too loud? Probably a pretty hectic life style they live every day. A dinner scene is something everyone can relate to because everyones had a family dinner before. it helps you connect with the characters in a short time.
especially with the value that food and meals have culturally for Italians

HoldenNY22 Yes, if you watch the HBO production ‘Gotti’ with Armand Assante which was released back in 1996, you’ll see that his son was riding a gas powered ‘mini bike’ when he was hit by the car, and not a regular bicycle. Him riding the mini bike is really a true story. If you haven’t watched the production with Armand Assante, then you really should because it blows this garbage production with Travolta out of the water, and many times over! The Gotti movie from ‘96 was done so extremely well, and it’s too bad that it was just an HBO release, because had it been in theaters, then it would have definitely been a box office hit during that time!

Using food in these movies is perfectly explained in goodfellas when tommy, jimmy, and henry show up at tommy's mother's house after clipping billy batts. Its like 3 am and she still makes an entire meal and they sit down, eat, talk, laugh and all the while there is a body in the trunk. And it is arguably the most memorable scene in the whole movie
That's one of my favorite parts of the movie.
Don't forget Tommy's moms painting. One dog looks this way, the other looks that way. It's a good painting
2nd or 3rd most memorable. #1 is Tommy getting made...into a corpse.
Taking the back way into the Copa
Shows off the painting of the dogs.
Did Gotti kill h--
Most likely.
I love how this movie has become a meme solely because the studio accused the critics of giving it bad reviews.

@JasonPoophess Just honest ones
@JasonPoophess Oh okay. There's a huge "critics bad" movement going on in film circles so you can never be too sure.
