I just watched the video and am now looking for the 35-100 armoured tube, before I was looking for the 40-150/2.8 for weddings.😅 I like your fine and clear English speaking. Thank you for your work.
Hi Jimmy, love your work. The photo's taken with both of these lenses are amazing. Have you ever considered doing a video showing how you edit your photos. I think a lot of people could benefit from it.
I bet I’ve watched this video 10 times 🤣 Just received my new (to me) 35-100mm f/2 and I’m blown away. It’s heavy but pairs perfectly to my E-M1X. Focusing is fast, quiet enough (my copy seems quieter than others I’ve heard) and the image quality has something truly *special* to it. I loved my 40-150 f/2.8 PRO but the SHG lens is remarkable. Thanks for doing this comparison. Love your excellent reviews.
Cool comparison. Two lenses that I always wanted to play with, but could never justify forking money for. I prefer the pictures from the older 35-100 lens. I look forward to the 12-40 f2.8 vs 14-35 f2 lens comparison.
Great review as always. I have the 40-150 + 1.4 converter. I can't see me wanting or needing the 35-100 f2 anytime soon but at least I now know one exists.
Yes, in fact, I owned both because I got the 35-100 before the 40-150. As said, 40-150 is my workhorse on a daily basis but if I need some cool portraits, I use the 35-100.
One comment on the Freeze Proof thing. I've been shooting Olympus Digital cameras for years. My first Olympus Digital SLR was the E-330. I chose Olympus over the competition, in part, because their cameras were pretty much kill proof in my experience. Their old Four-Thirds models like the E-330 and the E-30 were so reliable. I carried them everywhere. Here's the thing, I live in a part of the world where minus forty degree celcius is not uncommon in the winter months. That old E-330, which was not to my recollection advertised as "freeze proof", would go everywhere with me, including winter camps at minus thirty for days on end. It always performed, as did its lenses. When I purchased the new OM-D series with its "freeze proof" lenses, I expected the same excellent performance. Interestingly, the first time I took the E-M1 out at minus twenty, that "freeze Proof" 12-40mm F/2.8 lens became so stiff I couldn't rotate the zoom ring without fear of damaging the lens or its mount. From personal experience, I would say, on the whole, that the older four-thirds lenses are better able to cope with truly cold weather than the newer "freeze proof" designs. Just my two-cents on that one.
Christopher Wheeler thanks for sharing your experience and I will take your words for it. I never used 4/3 equipment until I switched to M4/3 with EM1 II. But Olympus did say only -10 hahaha so I guess your -20 is over their limit:)
ZD 35-100mm f2 is better in color tone.. it is superb lens.. but the AF is sometimes not as catchy as MZD 40-150mm f2.8... personally preference, i still love allthe Super High Grade lens collection... i still have them all.. i totally agree that the new 40-150mm f2.8 is sharp “clinicly”.. as sugestion, if you have chance, i should try ZD 150mm f2, you will drip your tears as the result is do beautiful.... trust me
Good morning Jimmy! Hope you’re doing well! I just purchased the em1 mark 2. I got it yesterday. I’ve been using the original em5 for about six years. While waiting for it to arrive, I’ve been researching the em1. My experience so far with the em1 is not good. Although I’m used to the menu system for the em5, that doesn’t seem to help much with the em1 mark 2. It’s a new camera. It seems more complicated. This is what led me to your channel. The one thing I noticed today was your description of the 35-100 f2 compared to the 40-150 f2.8. There’s two things I want to mention. The 4/3rds lens has a completely different mount and it lets in one stop more of light. So, that lens lets in more light and is better in low light than the 2.8 lens. Although, I would love to have the 35-100 f2, it’s just too big for me to handle. Too heavy. I do have two 4/3rds lenses: the 75-300 and the 50 f2 macro. This is a huge reason why I decided to get the em1 mark 2, because of the phase detect focusing ability. I couldn’t afford the mark 3 and there’s no way I’d get the m1x. It looks too big. And too expensive I was happy with the mark 3 specs. Especially the slo mo features and the use of phase detect auto focus. I m enjoying your content and your positive attitude. Thank you!!
Cheers Michael for getting in touch. What I can say is that EM1 II, while powerful, it does have way more features when compare to original EM5. Olympus kept adding things on and never really 'revamps' the menu system. However, though may not relevant to you, both EM1 III and EM1X have a 'menu shortcut' option where you can create your own menus for those you need to access quickly and frequently. However, over time, you will adjust to it. Yes, I know what you are saying a bout the 35-100 f2 being heavy and it's the reason why I don't use it often these days, it's still special and I am keeping it but it's almost double the weight of the 40-150 2.8 and 50% bigger, so I use the newer lens more these days. Happy shooting and you will love the EM1 II when you adapted to it. I certainly am.
First off, great choice for a co host. More of her would be awesome. I own both lenses and am selling the 35-100. But not because it is inferior to the 40-150. The 35-100 f2 is superior in image quality, sharpness and color. The 40-150 is smaller and easier to use hand held and quicker to focus. That’s about it in my experience. I have owned the 35-100 for about 7 years and have taken thousands of portraits with it and have made most of my income from it. From families, seniors, sports, action, the only issue has been a bit slower focus than the 40-150. However, I have found it to focus faster on my E-M1 and E-M1ii better than my E-5. If I didn’t need to sell it to fund the purchase of the newer lens I would definitely keep it. Great review and thanks.
Jimmy, is it just my eyes, or does the 35-100 seem very slightly softer than the 40-150? Is the side by side shot of your model at 10:49 a comparison of the two lenses and is the 35-100 on the right? Thanks.
So Ms Okuno and Ms 40-150 came all the way from Japan to London so you can take beautiful pictures ?! Nice video. Was interesting to see one of the zuiko lenses again and actually being compared to a newer lens. I have the zuiko 12-60 f2.8-4.0 which I rarely use because it's just so big, heavy ( + adapter) and slower compared to most of my mft lenses. Since I prefer to always have a camera with me, I feel a tendency towards the small primes and lenses like the Panasonic 35-100 f3.5-5.6 . Has some drawbacks, but is just so incredibly small. Btw, I'm also interested in the new Sigma 56mm 1.4 , though I love my Lumix 42.5 f1.7.
Hey this video gave me an insight into the Olympus 40-150mm lens as I am expecting the delivery of the lens next week. I mainly use my Olympus M1 MKii and my Olympus 12-40mm f 2.8 with other lens for videography. I would like know that how you manage the white balance as I use Kelvin all the time. Thanks
Well, you wouldn't believe it if we let you know our secret ahaha, we actually use 'Underwater' white balance on our cameras during recording. Strange enough, it's pretty accurate. But of course, it depends on situation but this mode is good for 90% of the time. Of course, the best is to use a grey card to set the WB before pressing the record button.
I'd love to see a primes vs zooms, or anything featuring Sigma's 16/30/56mm F/1.4 (especially the new one!) + Do you think Olympus will answer Panasonic's 10-25mm F/1.7 zoom with something? The 10-25 and the 40-150 PRO are a dream kit.
I found this review very interesting. I feel however you missed a great opportunity to include another reason that one may consider this lens. Shooting indoor sports. The 40-150 is great at this. I for one am very curious of the performance of the 35-100 f/2 on the E-M1 MII with latest firmware while shooting indoor sports.
Not a dumb question at all :). Olympus makes the Zuiko brand, these include the Four Thirds range of lenses. When they started making lenses for the Micro Four Thirds system, they called those lenses M.Zuiko to differentiate. In this case, the 40-150mm is an MFT M.Zuiko lens, the 35-100mm is a Four Thirds Zuiko lens :)
Good comparison between the two lenses. I'm actually hoping Olympus release some more telephoto prime lenses, like a 100mm f2. I am currently looking for a shutter remote for my em1mk2 for long exposure photography, any suggestions?
You can use the official RM-CB2 or some third party ones on Amazon. Most third party ones use the USB connection while the Olympus uses the traditional 2.5mm jack. They all work fine. If you are in UK/EU, you can use my code to get one from Olympus website "Jimmy15" for 15% discount :)
@@jwickerszh yes it's free but there's always a slight delay with the app. I am still a little old school so I use a remote too ahaha.. I do use the app for remote viewing though :)
@@Red35Photography Yes, I'm not sure what kind of photo he is trying to do though, usually I'm thinking long exposure is for low light/night landscape or with ND filters. Usually the timing is a bit irrelevant and it's more about not touching the camera or anything connected to it (they have wireless systems using the USB IIRC).
I'll look into these options. Yeah kinda got some filters and found myself suddenly using the bulb/live mode settings and I still need to either hold the shutter or press it again to stop the exposure. Holding is a pain and I am not sure if the later creates some some shake in the image from time to time, but heard it's better to use a remote. Currently in southern Africa, I bet someone will appreciate the discount ;).
35-100 f2'steals the show. Videos are like movie style. Overall performance like quick AF , handheld shooting , lighter , smaller, sharpness, handling 40-150 may be a winner but movie like video I will prefer older version
Interesting you said it, I absolutely adore the rendering of the older lens too. Hence I use it for my portrait projects. But on my daily work and jobs, I use the 40-150 :) Lighter on my shoulder too!
Another great video, but I never understood why 35-100 is sooooo big. It's like full frame 70-200 f/2.8, but the DoF equivalent is like f/4 lens. 40-150 f/2.8 PRO is just amazing lens!
Agreed. Full frame f4 equivalent so not sure why it's so big. the image circle it covers is only small. The new tamron 70-210 f4 is fairly airly small compared.
Not only DoF matters. You get TWO stops of exposition compared to 70-200 4.0 on full frame or one stop compared to 70-200 2.8. Which means i.e. where you shoot with 35-100 at f/2.0 on ISO 400, you should bump ISO to 800 on 2.8 and 1600 on 4.0 respectively.
Lens aperture is an optical property. This lens is actually a 35-100mm f/2.0 not an f/4 lens. Equivalence is there only for a reminder to people used to 35mm film cameras, but definitely not a basis for lens comparison. And then, this is a constant f/2.0 zoom with quite a long range...
I love when you have models explain the tech. LOL! Good video. Man I don't remember that lens being that big. I wonder how big the lens would be if they built it for Micro and at what price point. I still have the 14-54 f2.8-3.5 and it is a heavy weight in comparison to the 12-40 but it is 12mm longer. They did make a mark II version of the 14-54 and I think it was a bit smaller. Then when you consider the Panasonic 35-100 f2.8, it is tiny in comparison. I wonder what the lens would be like if it was an f2. Panasonic sells it for $1000, so would a f2 be about $1300-1500? The f2.8 pro zoom lenses are generally the same price as Sony f4 and Olympus and Panasonic usually are smaller. It would have been nice if they did start the pro lenses at f2 at the same price of Sony f4 and DoF would be less of an argument but then the weight savings would be more of an argument. f2 would be two full stops faster instead of one so that would be an additional bonus. However I think Olympus is trying to strike a balance. Your photos show a nice shallow DoF at f2 and f2.8 regardless that they are f4 and f5.6 full frame equivalent. With Panasonic's up coming 10-25 f1.7, the MFT mount proves they are ready for faster zoom lenses. Just need to see the price. When Canon and Nikon comes out with more and more faster zoom lenses, Panasonic and Olympus will be ready with theirs. With Canon's 28-70 f2 at $3000, I could see Olympus selling their equivalent f2 version at $1500. Just some thoughts, did you think I was going that direction?
Thanks for your insight mate! I do think MTF zooms are getting faster for sure but the diehards who bought into the system will always argue that faster zooms are large and bulky. But since many haven't used pro zooms in FF bodies. If they only ever using entry level APS-C and MTF cameras and kit lenses, then they would think these faster zooms are huge. But for me, coming from FF background, they are really nothing. The benefit is light gathering. DoF is only subjective and by moving forward or backward, you can get equivalent look, people always just compare it directly which what is wrong about the internet these days. If you are a photographer, you learn and adapt to a system that works for you. Just like in the 60's when many pros switch from medium formats to 35mm :) have a good day!
@@Red35Photography exactly! People complain that Olympus f1.2 prime lenses are heavy and so expensive. Glad Canon came out with their f1.2 50mm that is 950g and reviews say how big and heavy it is. The Olympus 25mm is 410g and half the price. Want "shallower" DoF using FF, you will pay for it in weight and price.
Great video. It makes me want to use my Nikon D5500 more with my Tamron 18-200. I shall try and meet you this month I shall message you via facebook or instagram.
You could have mentioned the weight during the review (and size), or how the hood works (I know the 40-150 has a clever slide hood). Instead I'll just guess that the f2 one weight twice as much and be such a pain to carry ... no everyone can afford a gorgeous model to carry their lenses.
hahah... well, we don't like to give out informations for two reasons: 1. they are widely available online. 2. I don't remember hahaha... I shoot and ignore the rest, the only thing I know is whether they are good or bad and the end results. We did two separate reviews on these two lenses so they are more in depth but again, we are more practical than theoretical :)
I relay don't know, the only zoom is for me the 12-40 pro, the rest is not that good. I only use that zoom and have a lot of primes (1.2 all and the 75 1.8) . If I shoot birds / distance m43 is very very bad. I use ff for that task. Best
@@Red35Photography yes, m43 is very bad concerning range... all of my photo colleges agree for product photography and street shooting (day) it is very good (m43), for the rest we use either Medium or FF. (Landscape, range (safari))
Great report and so please t is the lovely young lady you had as you gun bearer ha ha Gee they are big for only 150 and 100 wouldn't be able to use them ha ha well getting cold over there now so keep rugged up and stay healthy thanks again for your posts stay safe see ya
Thank you Bene! It's always fun to have some friends in the show, as you can imagine, talking to the camera a lone can be a little weird sometimes hahah. They are big but the huge hood didn't help. the 40-150 is pretty neat and compact for what it does. Yes, the 100 is definitely on the large side but it's an f2! Cold indeed and you too stay warm.
the 35-100 appears to be more "analogish" than the 40-150, i don't know if it's from the retouching or if it's natural but the photos taken with it seems to be more grainy and warm... For videos, the 40-150 is clearly a winner as the 35-100 hunts a lot searching to focus somwhere
I own and enjoy using both of these excellent lenses. Thank you for the great review and comparison of them!
Always enjoy your videos Jimmy and this lady is very endearing. Stay safe, Rich.

I love my Zuiko 35 - 100mm F2
Please invite another model help with next episode,I can't keep my eyes off her.
@@steventhomas231 exactly, all the FF 70-200 f/4 lenses are smaller.
Guillaume M of course is 2.0 lens but it’s still huuuuge.
35-100mm,my dream lens ever...
I prefer 35-100mm. Somehow the result is more beautiful
Want to do my personal review of this lens... and the baby
All lenses should be rated purely by how handy they are.
You could have mentioned the weight during the review (and size), or how the hood works (I know the 40-150 has a clever slide hood). Instead I'll just guess that the f2 one weight twice as much and be such a pain to carry ... no everyone can afford a gorgeous model to carry their lenses.
Size and weight of the model is irrelevant. :p
hahah... well, we don't like to give out informations for two reasons: 1. they are widely available online. 2. I don't remember hahaha... I shoot and ignore the rest, the only thing I know is whether they are good or bad and the end results. We did two separate reviews on these two lenses so they are more in depth but again, we are more practical than theoretical :)
@@Red35Photography Yes, but ... I'm lazy. I barely remember to switch the youtube video to HD.
Saori Chan!~
R.I.P. Olympus
I relay don't know, the only zoom is for me the 12-40 pro, the rest is not that good. I only use that zoom and have a lot of primes (1.2 all and the 75 1.8) . If I shoot birds / distance m43 is very very bad. I use ff for that task.
Best
Really? Have you tried 40-150 or 300 pro lenses? They are pretty good with distance subjects and with EM1 II, tracking is quite good too.
@@Red35Photography yes, m43 is very bad concerning range... all of my photo colleges agree for product photography and street shooting (day) it is very good (m43), for the rest we use either Medium or FF. (Landscape, range (safari))
OMG … She’s so darn cute 🥰
She's lovely.
I think if I have to take the portrait photo, I would rather use the 75mm f1.8, not these massive beasts 😂
the 35-100 appears to be more "analogish" than the 40-150, i don't know if it's from the retouching or if it's natural but the photos taken with it seems to be more grainy and warm... For videos, the 40-150 is clearly a winner as the 35-100 hunts a lot searching to focus somwhere
The 35-100 has better 'looking' images. I don't do retouching, but I do use my own presets for colours and tones during import into LR.
OMG this girl is beautiful and cute and I want to have her phone number lol sorry for totally ignoring the lense review lol
LOL
I have the 35-100 F2. Brilliant lens! I shoot sport. Check out my Instagram @jcz__photos if you want to see the results :)
Yep, she knows how to hold the lens.
Zuiko 35-100 f2 is actually the fastest zoom on Earth.
its f4 in ff equivilant
James Choi I’m talking about light, not DOF.
