Totally agree with your assessment - I've had one (with the MC14 teleconverter) for about 7 years now and still as sharp and fast as day 1. No looseness in lens mount or any controls. I use it for a lot of outdoors for fly fishing and its has been been subjected to saltwater splashes, fish slime, sand, dust, mud as well as out in 3 hours of continuous rain without any ingress. Can't recommend it enough. With the teleconverter you retain the 0.7m close focus and get the zoom range out to 210mm at f4 - and the bokeh there is pure cream! It is great for event shooting with the f2.8 available over the whole zoom range. Great video quality and presentation. Subscribed!

    1) The Fn button works on the GH5.
    2) This is not a soft lens, but a sharp lens. So the bokeh is busy, as seen in the sign in the background when you zoomed in.
    3) It suffers from haloing on point light sources, and also from windows etc. It looks cool, but it's far worse than the 35-100.
    4) It is parfocal as makes no difference on the GH5 - zoom in, focus, zoom out and it keeps focus.
    5) It is a huge lens, so scares some people.
    6) The autofocus is spot on on the GH series.
    7) I have it, and love it. I also have the 35-100, which is a more "neutral" lens and doesn't get much use.

Honestly its amazing and extremely versatile...Ive seen people complain the bokeh isn't 'perfect' but honestly, you find perfect bokeh, you get chromatic aberration...after nearly 13 years of photographing professionally, you start to realise that a shot is more than just the characteristics of each lens, how the model poses, what the subject is, lighting and so much more. Ultimately for me, the range on this lens and the crisp images it delivers is what sold me. I have shot numerous professional shoots with this lens, including high end corporate head shots and hair companies that use the images for branding buses, billboards, marketing etc.

A 50mm lens is a 50mm lens. It does not matter what sensor/ film format you are using. You explain it well, the differences. If you want to get real crazy how about equating a 25mm m4/3 lens to a 150mm 4x5 large format camera. They both have roughly the same field of view. With the logic of “ focal length equivalencies” a 20 mega pixel m4/3 sensor has the equivalent pixel density as a 80 mega pixel 35 mm format “full frame”sensor.

you're killing me Rich xD hahaha this lens has been on my radar for a while, but I was wondering how would it perform on the GH6 in terms of autofocus vs the native 35-100 2.8 but still don't know which one to go with because they both have their advantages, one has OIS and more lightweight and compact and the other has longer reach and compression, a fantastic lens hood mechanism (which I didn't knew about) and that fantastic manual focus clutch which I love in my Oly 12mm F2, so I'm still thinking...

LOL you're welcome Andy, Im glad its even more on your radar now ;) Honestly I would take the native 35-100 if I was using it more for video DEFINITELY. However because I have the Sigma 56mm f1.4 that I use for video (more gimbal and handheld) my Olympus 40-150 is only used for videos on a tripod, and its fantastic. And that manual focus clutch...MANNN!

FINALLY.... this lens gets the focus it deserves imho. This the single reason I went from Canon FF to M43. This lens replaced my EF 70-200/2.8 and the beloved tank of a lens, the Sigma 120-300/2.8, in one lens. At about a fifth of price, size and weight. AF speed and sharpness are out of reach of any lens I owned, including beasts like the 135/2.0, 85/1.2 or the 24/1.4. Yes, comparing the primes to a zoom, and that is sharper hands down. Including at the full long end @150mm.
The only downside I found to be bokeh in wildlife scenarios, especially wood/forest backgrounds with high frequency sticks'n'branches. They tend to make the bokeh turn very distraction and noisey regarding repeating patterns. I have no idea why this shows up only in that scenario.
Still, love this and only competitor I see is the PL50-200/2.8-4.0. Haven't had or borrowed one but reviews seem to favor the lens even over the Oly 40-150 regarding sharpness and bokeh. Though the price is much steeper as well.
Wonderful you picked up that little Oly-gem, well deserved. Thanks for sharing 💎❤️🍀👍

Focus by Wire -focusing gets too much hate by people who don't spend enought time at all to learn it.
Today's aircrafts are with Fly by Wire (hence the name). It started with the CF-105 Arrow in the late 50's, and is today the thing. It means that pilot doesn't have physical connection or feedback about the airflow forces to aircraft.
And yet the pilots love it because you get so much better control of everything. You can fly more accurately, more smoothly and you can do huge maneuvers quickly.
And same thing is with the FBW focusing, learning it for a month and you never return.
It is more precise, a lot more.
It is a lot faster, you can quickly jump on the target.
And it is easier to handle for tracking, so you can carefully follow the subject alternating distance changes.
But where it is annoying, is that you can't quickly just disable AF. Why that focus clutch is great, as you don't need to use AF/MF button.

And then you go on to talk about how great the bokeh is at 150 (300) mm on this lens because of how much you can throw background out of focus.. well its the excact same reason to be shooting a 200 mm full frame at f2.8 except i dont have to be as far away from the model. .. I really wish they would make a 100mm mft 1.4 lens, as then i could get rid of my full frame 180mm f2.8 lens. Hi Rich
What a great video. I am really glad you did this as there are so many videos on UA-cam comparing FF vs MFT where they place two cameras side by side and shoot at the equivalent focal length and then say, MFT can't do shallow depth of field.
But shallow depth of field can be achieved with longer lenses and not just aperture as you have so brilliantly demonstrated.
Have you had a look at dofsimulator.net/en/ to compare MFT to FF.
Thanks for taking the time and trouble to share online.
