Mary is the true hero of the group..She stuck it out with the Supremes from beginning to end.. End meaning after Diana left.. But, in all fairness, it was Diana's voice that made the Supremes stars..
Diana was the star because she and Barry Gordy was together and didn’t give the other ladies a chance to sing.. she was as soo intimated, when they were on a show with Gladys Knight Barry Gordy asked them to leave... SO SAD!!! TRUE STORY!!! And Florence was the first leader when they first started, when they got with Barry Gordy that’s when Diana took over she was a bitch, she wasn’t too nice, that Diana...
We don’t know what she would have done had she had an opportunity to shine. I love Diana Ross, but let’s face it, she was marketed as the leader of the group basically because she started sleeping with the boss. At that time, there weren’t many options.
It was all threes voices that gave that Supreme sound!!!!
@@dianneprice6776 Diana Ross basically slept her way to the top at Motown. Berry Gordy was highly intimate with Diana and that was what propelled her to the top at Motown. Their involvement was a "quid pro quo" situation.

I never heard Mary Wilson sing alone before and I've been around since the Supremes first started. I am surprised at how well she sings.

Mary sang solo on the Supremes Farewell performance in Las Vegas 1970...the song was "Can't Take My Eyes Off You," and she sang it beautifully.

She is still one of the best out there. Mary Wilson hasn't lost a thing. She's even stronger vocally than in the 60s.
You did a phenomonal job putting this together - and, believe it or not, there was more where that came from! (Such as "A Heart Like Mine", "Where is It I Belong", "Red Hot" and her parts on "He's My Man" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water." It is about time she gets the recognition she deserved!

@@timothyypearson not exactly true. Diana was there very early on. She was with them when they went in talent contests. Noone doubts mary's ability. She was not unique and admitted in interviews in the 70's that she initially did not have the courage to be 'lead'. She changed her story as she got older and bitter towards Diana.

@@wonderboyjoy Diana was not with them when they won early talent contests. Mary and Flo were friends first. They won these contests independently. They recruited Diana when the Primes manager wanted to form The Primettes, which was after the initial talent show days; Mary and Flo already knew each other.
She will be so missed. Her voice, beauty, graceful personality. She and the actress Diane Carroll made a deep impression on me as a young girl.

The problem is that people always want her to sing Supremes songs.
She sings them as she doesn't want to dissapoint anyone, but they were not written in her key and they are way to soft (sometimes pop-music-like) to be sung by her.
She's really great on standards, blues, ballads or jazz, as some of those videos proof it.
She can even do rock.
If that song is in her key, she can sound wonderful and can relax you very, very easily with her vocals and music.
I would love to hear her singing some Billie Holiday songs, to proof her qualities.

With world I became enthralled with Diana Ross and just admired Mary Wilson for keeping the Supremes real. I see she was indeed a phenomenal entertainer. Kudos Ms Wilson. As a young teen back in 62' I was stunned by the Supremes voices but no hits as the Shirelles and the Marvellets were kicking and ass and taking names by 64' they came into the hit's list and where up at bat with the Vandellas and Ronnie and the Ronettes. But they hung in there and the hit's just kept on coming. What a time for girl groups.

Mary Wilson. If you ever get close enough you'll see that Mary is truly more than a beauty. She's like one of the most Beauitful women in the world.
Mary detailed in her book that when she first moved out to LA from Detroit (and she was the first supreme to do so), she took singing lessons and trained her voice for many years.

Should have taken those lessons years earlier. Look, I sing. Lessons can teach you technique and improve on what you've got, but thats it. Listen to her. And think, that is AFTER her decades of lessons. Please... Mr. Gordy knew what he was doing when he put Diana in lead. Time has proven him correct. Compare them.

I use to think she couldn't sing too. Then I started seeing clips of her current shows and singing other non-Supreme songs. Then I watch clips of her singing Supremes songs. As of today, I still think she can't sing SUPREMES SONGS. When she sings songs more suited for her voice, she is the bomb, and I mean that in a good way. The Supreme Songs were written for Diana Ross's voice, not Mary's. Therefore, when she does sing a Supremes' song, it doesn't showcase her voice or range....and Mama has plenty of both!
The songs where written in the key for Diana ,what does that supposed to mean , because every song that is a song has keys ,so then if a sing is not in your key the singer is supposed to change the key to fit their particular voice and then the singer will then give the song their, particular take or style . That done on daily basis and is even expected.. So then saying the songs are or were not written in the key for Mary becomes a mute issue, and Mary already does that,(sing the song in her key). Now back at the top of your statement, you just like me and a whole more thought Mary could not sing and we were right because once not two times not three times but many times we saw Mary and thought ok ,this is Mary from the super duper Supremes was gonna get down and sing one of the Supremes songs my mom and sister and brother sat down to hear she version of baby love , and what came out of her mouth we all looked at each other and just watched Mary and when she finished my sister said why didn't she just shut her mouth ,and leave us in mystery no, she opened her mouth and releaved all doubts we,just couldn't believe what we where hearing coming out of her mouth, we all said everybody has a bad day but she did it again and again which give nowhere to go but say she cannot sing lead . But Berry Gordy said dead in Mary's face he finally your voice lessons have finally begun to pay off , that's a good thing because you've been taking voice lessons for as long as I've known you and you were able to pay for your lessons. I for one agree with anyone doing whatever it takes to improve any of your weakness , that in itself is always a plus because each of us should be doing the same to improve upon our own weaknesses because there is no ,not one who of us who"s perfect. And Mary now does sound a whole lot better today ,I also can now say Mary can sing I also agree with you. Here's a note there are background singers who are made for background singing ,able to embellish upon inhansing accenting the lead , that's a gift and Mary has most definitely proven that to be true . There are backup singers that are just that backup and just as there being backup singers that can backup like no bodies business.and that what they were meant to be ,and again that no slap in anyone's face , that's a gifting like wise there are lead singers who can backup for nothing they can lead ,but they are horrible singing backup . Then there are those who can do both. And the then there are some who shouldn't even do neither background not lead singing .

B A Yeah Mary is very versatile in her singing. You need to find more of her own songs and performances between 1985-1999. She had one of the biggest voices in The Supremes. Gladys’ voice is only unique because her singing style has been the same for decades.
@@JLPerryTV I like Mary however, Gladys knight has a better voice as far strength, technique, voice control etc. No comparison in my book.
I really feel that Motown could have done more to promote Mary and Florence singing career, so sad . I can only hope that they will have their chance in Heaven!!!

Mary has a deep voice, and does great on ballads. She doesn’t always do too well singing the Supreme songs, especially the ones Diana sang lead on. Diana voice bit higher and smoother. I honestly wish Mary would sing songs from the 70’s supremes. Stoned love and all those others.

In the beginning, all of the Supremes took turns singing lead. They all had talent. But, ironically, even in this industry, talent doesn't hold sway over politics or ambition. Even though they were all friends when they were very young and before they became famous it is obvious that Diana had planned a future for herself that the others had no clue about. Still, it is disappointing that Mary didn't become a bigger solo star after the group broke up. It was a difficult trajectory because Diana had sung lead on all of their biggest hits and, being a Supreme, people would be expecting her to sing mostly songs from the original Supremes repertoire. But that wouldn't really have worked because after their first really big hit most of the big follow-up pop hits were written to be sung in Diana's softer, kitten-voiced register. Diana was always more pop than R&B. Mary was always all soul, and this is expressed exquisitely in her recordings and live performances from the early 1970s onward.
Mary is beautiful and she has a rock solid voice. I love her, and I wish that she had left the Supremes sooner and forged her own career, with her own songs, and in her own style.
Why the supremes should have made a jazz album
A jazz album would have been great!
They have one, it was shelved. They finally released it a few years back, it's called "There's a place for us". It's showtunes and standards but it's about as close as we will probably ever get to the group having a jazz album.
They did. It's called, "Diana Ross and the Supremes sing Rodgers and Hart"

I grew up with The Supremes, Diana was clearly the standout . Her voice was different then any other group leaders voice. She had that look of a model wore the gowns the best. Florence was a bit heavy, Mary was short waisted but Diana even though skinny her proportions were spot on. I met them a few times in person and went to many concerts. All pretty but Diana was Exoticly striking. She really took your breath away. Even now at 80 she is stunning. ❤

Seriously guys!!! She was a member of THE most popular and successful girl groups of ALL TIME!! Don't compare the standards of today with those of yesterday. The singers back then had to be able to actually sing. At any point, you could be the lead on a song., so of course she can sing!!

I enjoyed this a couple years ago and just ran across this link reviewing an old email. Now I enjoy it with a sad heart. Still hard to believe Mary is gone. This was a great selection of performances that highlighted her beautiful raspy soulful voice. Don't know why her unreleased music was pushed back but can't wait to get it once it's released. I had the pleasure of seeing Mary perform twice. The 2nd time I got to touch her and get an autograph after the show. Now that moment is even more special.
Of course Mary can sing if could not sing she would not be A superstar.

Ross hasn’t lost her voice, it’s just changed a lot. She’s lost power and her upper range, but she’s developed a smokier, fuller voice. It’s no longer well suited for a lot of her catalog, but 2020 performances of Billie Holiday songs and others that require emotional depth are quite good. After 60 years and an impressive body of work behind her, I suspect she will long be remembered. To your point about Mary, her voice seemed to only get better with time. The timing of her passing was really unfortunate as she seemed to be on the verge of releasing new music.

There’s no “Supremes” without Mary, Florence and Diana. Their combined voices made their song infectious and memorable, all talented, however to gain international and cross over appeal, Diana’s voice was considered by Barry Gordy to be more acceptable for the success of the group and Motown. Mary was the real “SUPREME” she stayed the course, through good and bad times and left us still doing what she loved most, bringing love and joy to our hearts. RIP beautiful soul

Mary could have sang disco. She had that Donna deepness and grit. Ballads are really nice too. I think she spent too much time suing Motown and didn’t have guidance. She is really pretty too.
Mary did put out a disco album in the late 70s. Her big disco hits was Red Hot and Midnight Dancer.
