That “How can Mary tell me what to do when she lost her love so true? And Flo? She don’t know … cause the boy she loves is a Romeo” lyric was invariably creative! Nobody but H-D-H could pull that off something like that! This is what makes “Back” one of my all time favorite Supremes records … it was so nice to have that little shoutout to Mary and Florence because their presence and contributions were so foundational to the success of those early records during 1964 and 1965.
Mary Wilson's smokey alto filler voice against Ms. Flo's soulful soprano voice are the bomb.. Nobody can sing the backgrounds of the Original Supremes like they could... Ms. Wilson gives,, gave the BEST concerts & spread so much love where she performed.. Rest in heaven SUPREME Supreme Lady Mary Wilson-1944-2021 & Original Supreme Ms. Florence Ballard-1943-1976..
