The crew of a luxury pleasure boat had to be rescued after it became stuck while trying to pass under Chertsey Bridge on the River Thames in Surrey.
The 40ft vessel, thought to be worth ab
Richard Bates in the speedboat, nice people the Bates, had there business there many decades.
It looked to me that what the speed boat needed to do, and was trying to do , was to pull the motor yachts bow to port, then the motor yacht would free itself from the pinning effect that the current had on her, then simply power upriver.
While I am always happy to see a successful rescue of a nice boat, it hurts my head to see a boneheaded play like that. They are lucky the guy with the speed boat had just a little knowledge about towing. There could have been tragedy if the big boat had collapsed under the pressure. There should have been no more than one person left on the big boat and that person should have been ready to swim. They are so lucky. They owe that guy in the speedboat big time.
its not caught in the bridge it's pinned on to it by the flow a deeper draft would make matters worse, frankly I cant see why they are out at all with flow like that. more money than sense?
Need to think a bit more about recoil if the rope brakes. The person at the front of the large boat could have got a nasty whack....
The stuck boat turned to early for the lock .. Good old Richard Bates in the speedboat
amazing that that little speed boat could pull much larger boat. Well done!
actually the stricken vessel was not powerless, it applied considerable power as soon as the bow was lined up with the water flow to get the hell out of there quick, this rescue was in fact well executed on the second attempt, minimal damage, no injuries..yep well done.
" Now I don't believe you wanted to do that, No what you want a do is push the ship from the side at the bow thus causing the vessel to straighten and with a little throttle it will react against the current of the river which is forcing the craft onto the bridge wall, I'm not stopping, hav'nt you got that kettle on yet.
valiant courageous rescue music
i wouldnt be sat on front of boat like that that line breaks and he could lose his head lol
Even had credits! I stayed for the credits...
pump water into the bilge to lower the boat, i use to swim across there when i was a kid must of been mad as they come
I was there when the boat got stuck and i bet it's because of the river. Its been raining so much that the river got flooded.
Mate all that money and they didn't realise it was stupid to try and go through the bridge in flood waters
Donuts
Good thing he had his fenders out
Sorta like...."we're gonna need a bigger boat", lol
Did no one think of getting loads of people and stuff aboard the boat to make it draft more in the water and less in the air? (therefore making it less 'tall'). Obviously not...
???
the problem was the force of the flow holding it at an angle against the bridge. What was needed was to pull the bow round into line with the flow, thus reducing the angular force on the bow.
!???? Couch Potato Captain?
adding people and stuff to a stricken vessel....i think not, pulling the bow in line with the water flow is what was needed and correctly executed on the second attempt.
If they got all those people on the bridge on the boat she would sit lower and would have gone through.
It wasn't stuck because of its height but by the force of the water.
or just let the tires down a bit.
If he had powered up, on the approach he would of made it, Its what the big boats do at windsor. It was just bad judgement.
i think i know the owner of this boat..
