It's reassuring to know I wasn't the only one surprised by all the dark entries in this game. TBH, I hadn't picked up a pokemon game in a while, so I was like "When did the pokedex get so dark?" By the 6th or 7th oddly dark pokedex entry, I actually set the game down and told my hubby, "Who the heck is writing these things?"
I almost wonder if the reason the entries in Alola are so... quirky (?) is because Pokemon has been for the first time really competing with another mon game (ie: Yo-kai Watch) and since said franchise is kinda infamous for being kinda quirky they felt the need to make more odd choices for the designs of the monsters, pokedex entries and even gameplay elements (like the whole laying on beds thing). The alt. explanation I've heard people say that's kinda in in universe explanation is the rotom in your dex is actually writing the entries and much as you'd expect from a ghost Pokemon they ended up somewhat more morbid than usual.
Yo-kai Watch is a video game franchise in the same kinda niche as Pokemon (ie: you battle and befriend monsters). Its not well known internationally but its actually a super popular series of games in Japan. YW in part took off because it was funny when compared to Pokemon so it leads me to think Game Freak decided to make Pokemon a funnier game to make sure it would have that market too.
You choose your character, your age, try to say the truth. It all depends on your character. Female, 1-12 Oh hi drifloon... Wait what are you doing my cute lil drifloon? And then you find yourself in a group of small children age 1-12, and then you witness one be pulled, you hear them scream, and die. You're next. This happens to male 1-12 too. Females 13- whatever age eventually die and possess an icicle thus turning into a froslass. Now its your turn to kidnap and make decorations from men. Male age 1-12 same as the females. See you in the afterlife! Male age 13- whatever age you find yourself lost on a snowy mountain. You think you see a woman, so you start running up to her. And the the horrible truth sinks in. You realize its Froslass. But you realize (depending on age) that its your sister/girlfriend/wife. You hope she will spare you, but when a woman becomes Froslass, you lose your ability to feel emotions. Next moment, you find yourself in a cave frozen solid. You realize there are other men. You find yourself a decoration. You lose the ability to fight, so Froslass puts you to sleep. For good.
I always found it odd that gamefreak spends a whole generation focused on and praising mega evolution...only to turn around the next generation and make it out to be the worst thing ever.

That's pretty plausable sounding. Since the pokedex is now also a Pokemon, it probably has more insight as to what is really going on with other pokemon. So it can interpret and observe more accurately.

Froslass seems to be based off of a Japanese fairytale of a woman who was lost in a blizzard. A traveler came to help her and the woman asked the traveler to hold her baby while she went off, promising to come back. The longer the traveler held the baby, as the woman never came back, the heavier it became. They soon realize the baby is actually a rock, and that they are now frozen in place.
though i like the pun, i think if pokemon had any logic ( hah) to it about how some of these more reasonable creatures exist and procreate it would be more likely that it wilts because it simply doesn't need it anymore. You see with certain birds, parrots mostly that i know of, that mate for like - the males in this case are usually the showy ones but once they have a mate they often stop grooming themselves as much as they did and their colorful feathers fade a little. they become less appealing over all in aesthetics but it's not a direct correlation to health it's simply that it served its purpose.

The "Alolan" region is certainly strange, but I belive it is probably so weird because of certain places on Earth are so superstitious. Hawaii's culture has a lot of superstitions and ect. So the Alolan pokedex reflects how indulgent they are when it's comes to believing in spirits and the afterlife as well as true nature.
Well, that is the purpose of flowers on real plants, to attract pollinating insects/birds. Once it's fertilized, the flowers fall off, to save energy for growing fruit. Then, the next year, the flowers bloom again. The Lilligant isn't losing her happiness, she just doesn't need to attract a mate anymore, because she has one. And the male knows she's got a stable & healthy enough life to support a family. I can see a young trainer being so upset that her carefully-raised Lilligant lost her pretty petals after she catches a handsome Nuzleaf... only to be reassured by a Pokémon breeder mentor, and get all excited to prepare the nest for the new couple and their brood of baby Petilil!

There are animals in the real world that behave the exact same way. How do you think we tamed wolves so long ago? What is now a vicious monster in our eyes was a means to fight of the other monsters. But you can never let one of these predators be hungry, or else you will be the meal.
Yeah... Certain Pokémon must be a HUUUUGE responsibility. You would have to make sure your Gengar never got too bored. You would have to give your dark Pokémon an outlet and let them be evil for a while to keep them controllable. All your fire Pokémon would require expensive insulated rooms, same for electric Pokémon. Don't get me started on dragons. And imagine Pokémon death... Imagine having that super bond with a Pokémon only to see it get cut in half by a cyther or some shit. Lilligant isn't really all that sad. After all, the flower is used to find it a mate. It got a mate, so it no longer needs the flower. Why keep wasting resources on keeping the flower alive at that point?

I almost wonder if the reason the entries in Alola are so... quirky (?) is because Pokemon has been for the first time really competing with another mon game (ie: Yo-kai Watch) and since said franchise is kinda infamous for being kinda quirky they felt the need to make more odd choices for the designs of the monsters, pokedex entries and even gameplay elements (like the whole laying on beds thing).
The alt. explanation I've heard people say that's kinda in in universe explanation is the rotom in your dex is actually writing the entries and much as you'd expect from a ghost Pokemon they ended up somewhat more morbid than usual.

Yo-kai Watch is a video game franchise in the same kinda niche as Pokemon (ie: you battle and befriend monsters). Its not well known internationally but its actually a super popular series of games in Japan. YW in part took off because it was funny when compared to Pokemon so it leads me to think Game Freak decided to make Pokemon a funnier game to make sure it would have that market too.

And then you find yourself in a group of small children age 1-12, and then you witness one be pulled, you hear them scream, and die. You're next. This happens to male 1-12 too. Females 13- whatever age eventually die and possess an icicle thus turning into a froslass. Now its your turn to kidnap and make decorations from men. Male age 1-12 same as the females. See you in the afterlife! Male age 13- whatever age you find yourself lost on a snowy mountain. You think you see a woman, so you start running up to her. And the the horrible truth sinks in. You realize its Froslass. But you realize (depending on age) that its your sister/girlfriend/wife. You hope she will spare you, but when a woman becomes Froslass, you lose your ability to feel emotions. Next moment, you find yourself in a cave frozen solid. You realize there are other men. You find yourself a decoration. You lose the ability to fight, so Froslass puts you to sleep. For good.

Actually - it makes a lot of sense with Japanese and other east-Asian folklore/idioms about sex come to think of it. You know how we say we "come/came"? In Japan, say they "go/went", instead. Historically, Confucius and other old-school east-Asian scholars believed things like "if you have sex and climax, some of your life energy is temporarily leaving you". In fact, there used to be lore in China that if a man could have sex with a woman without ejaculating/climaxing that he would gain spiritual power/vitality rather than lose it, potentially becoming immortal if he did it enough times. Which seems to imply he'd also be gaining it from the woman, meaning she was losing vitality with the climax as well?

Froslass seems to be based off of a Japanese fairytale of a woman who was lost in a blizzard. A traveler came to help her and the woman asked the traveler to hold her baby while she went off, promising to come back. The longer the traveler held the baby, as the woman never came back, the heavier it became. They soon realize the baby is actually a rock, and that they are now frozen in place.

though i like the pun, i think if pokemon had any logic ( hah) to it about how some of these more reasonable creatures exist and procreate it would be more likely that it wilts because it simply doesn't need it anymore. You see with certain birds, parrots mostly that i know of, that mate for like - the males in this case are usually the showy ones but once they have a mate they often stop grooming themselves as much as they did and their colorful feathers fade a little. they become less appealing over all in aesthetics but it's not a direct correlation to health it's simply that it served its purpose.

The "Alolan" region is certainly strange, but I belive it is probably so weird because of certain places on Earth are so superstitious. Hawaii's culture has a lot of superstitions and ect. So the Alolan pokedex reflects how indulgent they are when it's comes to believing in spirits and the afterlife as well as true nature.

Well, that is the purpose of flowers on real plants, to attract pollinating insects/birds. Once it's fertilized, the flowers fall off, to save energy for growing fruit.
Then, the next year, the flowers bloom again.
The Lilligant isn't losing her happiness, she just doesn't need to attract a mate anymore, because she has one. And the male knows she's got a stable & healthy enough life to support a family.
I can see a young trainer being so upset that her carefully-raised Lilligant lost her pretty petals after she catches a handsome Nuzleaf... only to be reassured by a Pokémon breeder mentor, and get all excited to prepare the nest for the new couple and their brood of baby Petilil!

Pretty sure if you thought gengars tricks were neat and its actions playfull not scary, it would just be with you. In other word you have to have no fear whatsoever to be its friend. There are animals in the real world that behave the exact same way. How do you think we tamed wolves so long ago? What is now a vicious monster in our eyes was a means to fight of the other monsters. But you can never let one of these predators be hungry, or else you will be the meal.
