  • Dan Harris talks beginner meditation with anxiety, his panic attack on tv, writing a book about mindfulness and how his life changed 10 years ago. Now the tables have turned: Dan is interviewed by two of his producers.
This is the kickoff episode of our upcoming series celebrating the 10th anniversary of Dan’s book, where two of Dan’s producers, DJ Cashmere and Lauren Smith, interview him.
We talk about the story behind the book, what it was like to have a panic attack on national television, why Dan decided to admit it publicly, how the success of the book utterly transformed his life, and what he learned… Both while writing the book and subsequently.
We talk about concepts such as “Respond, not react,” why our faults aren’t our fault (but they are our responsibility), and whether we all have the capacity to change. DJ and Lauren will even weigh in on how they think Dan’s doing on the score.

I like Dan Harris. He drops the F bomb like an average person. Keeps it real! Miss you on GMA / TV but glad to see you still around!

That’s James Joyce, the guy living at a short distance from his body. Such a perfectly relatable line. I love you guys and your work. Thank you so much. (From a fellow PA-on-camera human bean.)

Dan, i saw you recently on Mayim's podcast, and i looked at your face and i thought, wait, i know that face! I remembered you from reporting from many dangerous places. I hadn't seen you for a while. I didn't know you wrote a book 10 years ago. I am now going to listen to the audio book. I also just subscribed to your podcast. I might be 61 years old, but as a young Jewish girl, i was called a worry wart. Later on in life, i suffered a series of panic attacks. I have been interested in meditation, but when i tried it thought that i was doing it wrong until i heard you explain to Mayim that she was doing it correctly. So, now that i have found you again, i am going to listen to 10% Happier. i look forward to learning from your book. Thank you!

Dan, I discovered your books, app and podcast at a very pivotal and trying time in my life. I wanted to express my appreciation to you, your staff, meditation instructors and podcast guests. At the risk of sounding dramatic, you all were a light at the end of a very dark tunnel. With much gratitude 🙏

You’re so funny when sharing some of your experiences. Your story resonates with me. I had my first full blown panic attack 50 years ago, at age 22, and like you, went from dr to dr to figure out what’s going on with me. My story covers decades too. I finally got help about nine years of dealing with depression, panic and claustrophobia after I reading an article in the Chicago Tribune about a new field of psychiatry at Rush called biopsychiatry and knew the dr featured, Dr Sushil Bagri was going to save me. He treated me for years with much success but I have had recurrences of depression over the years and still deal with anxiety. I do love the app and the guided meditations - it helps me so much. I meditate now as often as I can. You are one of my heroes.

Hearty congratulations on a decade of your first book 10% happier which set you on a forward looking interesting life journey.
Found this episode very interesting, insightful and candid. Good to see host being interviewed. Though I am not an authority on this 'Meditation' ihowever feel it's loaded with varied forms of practice. Whatever the form of practice, finding the distraction free state (outer as well as inner) is the begining of unfolding which are self rewarding. As we go deeper n deeper, there is more n more unfoldment. Meditate = Evolve.

You were in Ramallah - my hometown! WOW 🙏💕☮ (now I am in the US since 1974) ----- continuing my comment at the end of the video: I loved it on many levels: getting to know you and also the being real and sharing genuinely is so helpful for me and I am sure for many. Sometimes, when one is into the dharma seriously, the down-to-earth aspects of being human maybe a bit forgotten and also I wish more teachers share about their personal stuff and how they overcame some of it as example... - so sharing real is helpful in feeling that one is not crazy and that imperfection and even struggle is part of the journey. I shared the video on my Facebook. I loved and also deeply appreciated your quote from Burmese Master Sayada U-Pandita "The mind is not yours but it is your responsibility". Can you believe the way teachers talk about the mind. is not yours, has been really confusing to me... but this quote that you relayed shifted my understanding! Thank you! Namaste to you and your new work and your learning.... looking forward to your programs!

Great interview! Thx Dan for open/frank/interesting comments. Both producers were seem to enjoy being in “driver’s seat”. Suggestion for DJ …. Remove “like” from speech pattern, distracting. Listened to on App & will listen again.

Dan makes interviewing look easy so this was interesting to see. A big takeaway for me was the comment that Dan needs to rewrite his internal narrative on the mindfulness movement. So true for so many of us holding on to narratives that may have been relevant once upon a time but which have gradually lost their wisdom without us knowing it. I also wondered at the swearing that suddenly appeared in the podcasts without explanation. Was there a lightening up of regulations in the US?

Can do w/o the crude language but following Dan’s path of skepticism and rigor for this 75 yr old has been mind opening & Buddha admitting. Wish I could find the often referenced “show notes.” Someone please post how (as a subscriber) to find them. Continue managing those dynamics!🙏

If someone were to mock me and laugh about my panic attacks i still would not wish one upon them.
I don't like the idea that it can happen to someone. I find it impossible to describe how it felt.
    It changed who i am.
Thankfully I've been able to solve the problem. A strange series of ideas and learning allowed me to do so.
I just don't want anyone to assume that they can imagine what it's like.
It's not like that. You can't.
I've been recently surprised by some of the things that I've heard Eckhart Tolle say. Not in a good way.
I won't emulate his style by slandering him.

Overall, great interview. One thought on language. Swearing in conversation gets old. I use swear words for emotion, (I just hit my thumb with the hammer), or emphasis. When I hear people using fuck as every other word, it just sounds like they are ignorant or trying too hard to impress ( yeah I know and use cuss words) and it has the opposite effect on me.

The Buddha himself may not have been a dogmatist. However since, all Buddhists very much seem to be dogmatists. Dramatically so. Anyone else notice that?

That's a cliche' answer though, isn't it? And it's how many years now? One would think that's enough time to at least not be a mental patient?
And I'm not at all meaning to pick on the ill here. Rather I'm questioning the cure (both meditation and clin-psy). Neither of which, nor the combination seems very effective.
