    One of the best SNL intros of all time. Saw it when it came out. 1:44 - 1:56 - Norm McDonald's scene was one of the best parts! What happened to the part where the human cast was in a cage?

    Big props to "Chuck" although he was super right wing at this point and president of the NRA, he could still come on a "liberal" show and joke around. Hard to imagine that nowadays.

    That was fun! I never knew he hosted SNL! Heston has done Shakespeare, was Ben-Hur, of course, been in Westerns, has done Biblical archaeology, and what is he mostly remembered for? Planet of the Apes. Oh, and Moses! A great man.

    I seem to recall that Heston approached a cage of the SNL cast and Chris Farley was acting dumb. When Heston stated that they had cut out his brain, another cast member said that that's just the way Chris was.

    How the hell did they get so many first-rate copies of the original ape makeup from 1968? I didn't think the original molds existed anymore!

      Those aren't even close to the original applicances, these are far more stylized to amplify the comedy. These were obviously all made for the this performance.

      @@generalyellor2187 When I said copies I was thinking of the upper-end commercially sold prosthetic masks they were selling in the 1970s.
      Don't know if they were made from original molds, but they were sweet. Wish they were still available.
      If SNL can make something even close from scratch, they have a very good makeup department.

      @@psilva2462 Just listening to Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast with Guest David Mandel who at the time was a young SNL writer and pitched/wrote this bit. According to him you are 100% correct, they flew the collector to NYC with all of his purchased original costumes for the show. Cool stuff.

      Yes, I have the whole skit at home. Recorded it back when NBC would air old episodes along with the music acts, that was awesome. Remembering seeing George Harrison and Paul Simon singing "Here Comes the Sun" along with many others.

    I remember watching this live when it first came out, I had to Google it and find it on line to watch the whole episode. There is a skit about white people dancing to gangsta rap, David Spade making fun of models that look like Men and Heston doing a NRA ad for gun store renting guns.. could you imagine that skit in 2023?

      Heston was fine. He played the straight man here reacting off of the crowd. The "madhouse" line did fall a little flat, but I'm not sure that' was his fault.

    Those lefties at SNL wouldn’t allow Charlton Heston on the show if he was still alive. Not these days. They’d be doing mocking sketches about him like they do about anybody who doesn’t vote Democrat.
