In ww2 and ww1 you couldnt be ferried around from combat zone to combat zone with choppers and airplanes. Even being in a FOB or military base guarding it is nerve wrecking. Vietnam was the first taste of it and since then the military has only gotten better at keeping their assets clear of downtime. And thats all you are as a soldier: an expendable asset. And they're not shy about using you.

Regarding stepping over a barbell: it's something lifters avoid doing because you don't want people doing it to you...standard do unto thy neighbor stuff. Serious lifters love their routines, preparation, details, consistencies, and understand others do too. Don't touch/step over the deadlift bar or mess with the floor underneath, etc, and it's the same with squatting or benching. Don't walk across someone squatting heavy or take weights off the rack/bench during the set. It's not really superstition or voodoo: you're pushing your body to the absolute limit with a fair amount of risk, so you need complete focus and control.
