What baffled me then, and even today, is that FSU's offense went in the tank in the last three games of the season - 3 TDs in the final three games vs. Miami, Florida, and Texas A&M. They looked unstoppable vs Michigan earlier in the season.
Well, we won it in 93. Miami has and always will be a rivalry like no other with FSU. Noles fan here, I've been through all the missed field goals, etc. Both teams had extraordinary talent and coaching.

This is when this was hands down the #1 rivalry because the winner won/played for the championship in 83, 85,86, 87, 91,92,93,94,96,98,99,00,01, and 02! 14 times in 20 seasons one of these two either won, or atleast played for the national championship! 70% ! Never again will a rivalry be that important to the big picture over 2 decades. And FSU Florida in the 90s was nearly equally as important. Bowden is the only coach spurrier had a losing record to at Florida

Had Huerta missed that it would have been an avalanche of momentum against the Hurricanes. A 45-yarder back then was probably the equivalent of a 53-yarder today - most college kickers couldn't make that, especially off a grass field. One of the biggest kicks in Miami football history.

Then it was two very difficult kicks that ended up beating Oklahoma in the 1988 Orange Bowl. And Huerta did his job in this game, essentially clinching another title for Miami. Without those kickers the Hurricanes might have lost a bunch of crucial games. Instead they won four national championships in nine seasons.
This game is by far, was one of the best games of that decade. I'm a canes fan and, I was so glad when my team won the game. That said, we were still the better team with a slight edge in overall talent. Played way too tight and had too many mistakes, both in terms of execution and coaching. It should've never come down to a FG.

If Dennis Erickson would've compromised and started using the shotgun on first down he would've won at least one more NC.....before the wheels came off. lol. Love these games. Probably the most intense era of CFB.
What I can't understand is why did Florida State try for the winning field goal on 3rd down? They could have ran another play to get closer field goal range.
Prior to the playoff system, it seemed as if the #1 ranked team was always pressured with the burden to win these games - and from some of these matchups on TV once I became a fan of college football, the #1 team seemed to lose more than 50% of the time. It was often a guaranteed loss when a #1 ranked team faced UM when they came into the game ranked #2. But UM experienced the same consequences at least 3 times when they were ranked #1 and their opponents were ranked #2. The #2 team is often more relaxed in these high-stake games.
I saw a guy fighting hard for every yard and doing an incredible job holding onto the ball while being sacked 6x. Sometimes it's the throws you don't try that wins you games. Gino a gamer against a ferocious D. Who won sour puss?
